Geology Of The Plutonic And Hypabyssal Rocks Of The Betts Cove Ophiolite Complex, Newfoundland, Bruce D. Idleman Jan 1981

Geology Of The Plutonic And Hypabyssal Rocks Of The Betts Cove Ophiolite Complex, Newfoundland, Bruce D. Idleman

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Betts Cove ophiolite complex lies within the Dunnage Zone island arc terrain of central Newfoundland. It forms the base of the lower Ordovician Snooks Arm Group, which consists of mafic igneous rocks of the ophiolite and a thick sequence of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks which conformably overlies it. The Snooks Arm Group is unconformably overlain by sub-aerial sediments and volcanics of the presumed Silurian Cape St. John Group.
The base o£ the ophiolite complex consists predominantly of ultramafic rocks. These are interlayered on a variety of scales, and show mesoscopic igneous structures which suggest that they were produced by …

Structural Studies Of The Ordovician Flysch And Melange In Albany County, New York, Frederick W. Vollmer Jan 1981

Structural Studies Of The Ordovician Flysch And Melange In Albany County, New York, Frederick W. Vollmer

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The middle Ordovician rocks of the Albany 15 minute quadrangle comprise interbedded graywacke and shale, and in the east, coarse cobble or olistostromic deposits. The detrital composition, westward fining and regional westward transgression of these deposits indicate that these were sediments shed off the westward thrusting Taconic Allochthon. Primary sedimentary structures show that these rocks were deposited by turbidity currents flowing into a longitudinal trough, probably formed in response to increased load during overthrusting. Although strongly dependent on lithology, deformation intensity generally increases from west to east; from essentially undeformed bedded flysch through asymmetrically folded and thrust beds to highly …

Geology And Groundwater Supplies Of Southern Dawes And Northern Sheridan Counties, Nebraska, Vernon L. Souders

Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

The upland plain in southern Dawes and northern Sheridan counties of northwest Nebraska is underlain by rocks of Tertiary age. These rocks overlie those of Cretaceous and Jurassic ages in this region of about 2250 square miles . Strata of Tertiary age are a source of groundwater for most of the irrigation, municipal, stock, and rural-domestic needs of the area.

Nine stratigraphic units of Tertiary.age were defined by examination of test hole samples and logs and by examining electric logs of oil and gas tests, driller's logs of irrigation wells, and outcrops. Stratigraphic correlations are difficult in the area because …

Ash Hollow Historical Park, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. May 1980

Ash Hollow Historical Park, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

Robert F. Diffendal, Jr., Publications

Ash Hollow Creek is an intermittent stream forming a southern tributary to the North Platte River. The creek flows only in response to precipitation from locally heavy thunderstorms or to heavy runoff from melting snow in the spring. Western Nebraska has a semi-arid climate and receives less than 20 inches of rainfall per year. Vegetation in the park and surrounding area is typical of the short grass prairie of the Great Plains. Native short grasses grow abundantly on undisturbed tablelands, valley sides, and along principal flood plains of streams and rivers. Prickly pear, barrel cactus, yucca and sagebrush are common …

The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Columbia River Basalt In The Chehalem Mountains, Oregon, Abdul-Rahman Mohammed Al-Eisa Jan 1980

The Structure And Stratigraphy Of The Columbia River Basalt In The Chehalem Mountains, Oregon, Abdul-Rahman Mohammed Al-Eisa

Dissertations and Theses

The Chehalem Mountains area, encompassing 70 square kilometers, is at the western extent of the Columbia River Basalt Group as mapped in western Oregon. The flows in the study area were identified as belonging to subdivisions of the Columbia River Basalt Group on the basis of physical characteristics and trace element geochemistry. The basalt flows are poorly exposed in the area and weathering is deep and extensive where the flows have been exposed. Where erosion has exposed the underlying marine sedimentary rocks, the basalt has failed in landslides.

Stratigraphic Relationships Of The Brentwood And Woolsey Members, Bloyd Formation (Type Morrowan), Northwest Arkansas, Thomas A. Mcgilvery, Charles E. Berlau Jan 1980

Stratigraphic Relationships Of The Brentwood And Woolsey Members, Bloyd Formation (Type Morrowan), Northwest Arkansas, Thomas A. Mcgilvery, Charles E. Berlau

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The Brentwood Member of the Bloyd Formation conformably overlies the Prairie Grove Member, Hale Formation in the type Morrowan succession of northwestern Arkansas. At its type locality, the Brentwood is separated from the underlying Prairie Grove Member by nearly 6 m of dark shale. Away from this area, the shale thins rapidly and the Hale-Bloyd boundary may be placed with difficulty. At some localities east of type section, the boundary is thought to be erosional rather than the more typical gradational contact. The Brentwood consists of discrete carbonate bodies separated by dark shales. The carbonates consist principally of open shelf …

Structural Geology Of The Fort Miller, Schuylerville And Portions Of The Schaghticoke 7½' Quadrangles, Eastern New York, And Its Implications In Taconic Geology; And Experimental And Theoretical Studies Of Solution Transfer In Deforming Heterogeneous Systems, William P. Bosworth Jan 1980

Bosworth

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Stratigraphies previously proposed for the Taconic sequence of southern Washington County, eastern New York, have incorrectly defined and positioned lower Cambrian black slate units. The proper sequence of Cambrian (?) through Cambrian lithologies is (terminology from Jacobi, 1977): Bomoseen green wacke, Truthville green slate, Browns Pond black slate, Mettawee purple and green slate, and West Castleton and Hatch Hill black slates. This and the entire Taconic sequence is conformable within the western Giddings Brook slice. The detailed lithostratigraphy reported by Jacobi (1977) and Rowley (1980) in northern Washington County can be followed at least some 45 kilometers to the south …

Complex Structure And Stratigraphy Of Lower Slices Of The Taconic Allochthon Near Middle Granville, New York, David B. Rowley Jan 1980

Complex Structure And Stratigraphy Of Lower Slices Of The Taconic Allochthon Near Middle Granville, New York, David B. Rowley

Geology Theses and Dissertations

The Precambrian (?) to medial Ordovician rocks of the Taconic Allochthon are characterized by argillaceous and arenaceous sediments with lesser associated carbonates, carbonate breccias, and cherts of predominantly deep-water aspect. These allochthonous rocks tectonically overlie an autochthonous to parautochthonous coeval sequence of dominantly shallow marine clastics and carbonates of the Champlain and Vermont Valley sequences. Facies, thickness, sedimentologic, and paleontologic considerations suggest that these coeval sequences represent a carbonate shelf continental rise pair of the east-facing early Paleozoic Atlantic-type margin of North America. This margin formed by the opening of an ocean in latest Precambrian time. The stratigraphy of the …

Analysis And Interpretation Of The 5,000 Ft. (1,538 M) Red-Bed Sequence Encountered In The Sparks E̲T̲ A̲L̲. #1-8 (Michigan Basin Deep Borehole), John H. Fowler Dec 1979

Analysis And Interpretation Of The 5,000 Ft. (1,538 M) Red-Bed Sequence Encountered In The Sparks E̲T̲ A̲L̲. #1-8 (Michigan Basin Deep Borehole), John H. Fowler

Masters Theses

A 5,000 ft (1,538 m) pre-Mt. Simon (Upper Cambrian) red-bed sequence, encountered in the Gratiot County deep borehole (Sparks et al. #1-8) and herein na~ed the North Star Formation, consists of undeformed recurring beds of immature arkosic sandstone 2 to 34 in. (5 to 85 cm) thick. These beds grade upward from erosional basal contacts into mudstone units 1 in to 12 ft (3 cm to 3.8.m) thick. Within the sandstones, grading, horizontal lamination, and crossstratification define Bouma intervals "a", "b", and "c", which combine to form incomplete Bouma sequences. Mudstones exhibit abundant horizontal laminations. Secondary sedimentary structures (load . …
