The greatly improved performance of livestock consuming low-endophyte tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) forage has stimulated production of endophyte-free seed and replanting Acremonium coenophialum infected pastures (Stuedemann and Hoveland, 1988). Since endophytic fungi co-evolved with their host and are non-pathogenic, the endophyte-plant relationship is likely a mutualistic symbiosis (Bacon and Siegel, 1988). An important question arises as to whether tall fescue free of the endophyte will have the same productivity and persistence as infected grass in stressful environments. Renewed emphasis has been placed on crop rotation systems that include a perennial legume. Reasons for this interest include protection of soil from erosion, protection of ground water from nitrate contamination, reduction of soil compac­tion, and potential for fewer inputs which could reduce costs of grain production. Barnes et al. (1985) reported that a nondormant alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) selected for increased Nin the root and crown had similar summer herbage yield as adapted dormant cultivars, but provided 62 % more symbiotically fixed N for a following crop than dormant cultivars. It appears more and more clearly that soil analysis is not sufficient to give a good approximation of the mineral status of grassland soils. In perennial crops leaf analysis and empirical critical levels are widely utilized. This grassland approach emphasizes the good results which can be obtained for nitro­gen, potassium, phosphorus not from leaf but from the whole herbage plant analysis. Eragrostis curvula is widely planted as a hay crop in the summer rainfall areas of South Africa. For many years the main yield determinants have been regarded as N and P. As a result of the depleting effect of crop removal low K status is becoming more common. The beneficial effect of K fertiliz­ation, in combination with N, has been illustrated by Miles et al. This report summarises current research investigating the enhanced shoot growth and higher nitrogen (N) yield observed in N-deficient tropical grass pastures when moderately shaded. The "shade response" was consistently observed in a number of "run-down" tropical grass pastures, over a range of soil types. White there was evidence of translocation of N from roots of shaded grass, this source did not fully account for the additional N harvested in shoots. A more favourable microclimate at the soil surface-litter layer interface, particularly soil moisture, appeared to be responsible for improved litter breakdown and possibly soil mineralisation activity. An experiment under controlled conditions, using the de Wit competition model, has provided an explanation of competitive relationships in mixtures of Panicum maximum var. trichoglume (green panic) cv. Petrie and Neontonia wightii cv. Tinaroo glycine. Experiments in a tropical upland environment with summer rainfall dominance (to which they ore adapted) have provided further understanding of their relationships. Over a period of 2 years for well-wafered plants in containers and 4 years in a rain-fed field experiment, competitive gains by one species alternated with-gains by the other, and neither species gained significantly overall. Amazonian anthrosols are renowned for their high fertility and dark color, properties primarily attributed to the abundance of condensed aromatic carbon (ConAC) in the soil organic matter. ConAC, commonly referred to as black carbon, play a key role in the stability and nutrient retention of these soils. However, the processes governing the formation of ConAC and its transformation into oxygenated derivatives remain poorly understood. In this study, we used multiple analytical platforms to investigate the chemistry of ConAC-rich humic acids (HA) extracted from Terra Mulata de Indio, a type of Amazonian anthrosol. Six harvests were made (at 3-weekly intervals) from spring regrowth of Russell lupin (Lupinus polyphyllus x Lupinus arboreus ) to evaluate changes in yield and nutritive value with plant maturity. Dry matter (DM) yield and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) concentration increased from 40 to 160 g/plant and 24 to 46%, respectively, while nitrogen concentration, in vitro cellulase DM and organic matter digestibility decreased from 4.5-2.4%, 77-56% and 81-55%, respectively, as the lupins matured from late vegetative to hard pod stage. Four rates or boron (B) and 2 rates of nitrogen (N) were applied to a mature stand of lotus 11ligi11os11s Schk. cv. Grasslands Maku before flowering, on 10 November 1988. The 2 rntes of N (40 and 80 kg N/ ha) were either applied once or applied at 5 and 10 kg N/ha respectively, at weekly intervals for 8 weeks. N did not increase seed yields. Weekly applications of N significantly (P<0.05) decreased seed yields by 28%. B at 0.91 kg/ha increased seed yields by 7% but this increase was not significant. While seed yields in some tropical legumes may benefit from N application, Grasslands Maku does not benefit. Rather, seed yields are depressed. The application of B did not significantly change seed yields, but more research on B may be needed in areas where B availability is thought to be low.

Decline of productivity of sown pastures is related to nitrogen (N) deficiency in the presence of high C:N ratio litter. We therefore examined litter dynamics in 2 20-year•old green panic pastures (high and low N) on a clay soil. Litter inputs, decomposition in litter bags, and in sit11 changes in undisturbed litter were measured. The standing crop of coarse litter peaked in early summer and troughed in mid­winter. The N concentration was 0.60% (C:N 70), At least 1.7 t/ha of dead tops containing 0.44% N entered the litter pool in one year. Annual turnover of coane litter was c. 1.0. …

In the northern part of the province of Cordoba (32°S), Argentina pasture production is limited by nitrogen availability. The work, using Rhodes ( Chloris gaya11a Ku nth) of 3 origins, evaluated the effect of various dates of surface tillage on the dry matter production and nitrogen content of 3 Rhodes grass cultivars: a local ecotype (Cordobes), cv. Samford and cv. Katambora. Dry matter and nitrogen production was increased in the 3 cultivars when the tillage was done before the rainy season.

In the first of two pot experiments, growth of seedlings of Sesbania sesban in response to rates of P (0, 40, 120, 160 and 200 kg/ha) and of N (0 11nd 100 kg/ha) was examined. In a second trial the effect of inoculation with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza (Glomus macrocarpus) and 2 levels (0 and 40 kg/hn) each of triple superphosphnte (TSP) and Egyptian rock phosphate (ERP) were studied. Escaped plants of white clover which could not be identified by variety were collected and were grown in pots filled with a perlite contained nutrient solution in a growlh chamber. On 16 of the collecled plants, the change of the nitrogenase activity by treatments with or without nitrogen (20 ppm N, NaNO3) was measured by gas chromatogrnphy and the variation of peroxidase isozyme was analysed by means of slab acrylamide gel electrophoresis. Two experiments were carried out both in spring and fall with cultivars of rape (Brassica napus spp.) and C.O. (B. campestris x B. oleracea). Both cullivars showed lillle increase in plant length in spring sowing with nitrogen topdressing, but the increments were higher in earlier topdressing (T l) and later topdressing (T2) than in control in autumn sowing, although the difference was not significant. Time course of remobilisation of reserves was studied during the regrowth of Loli11m perem1e and Medicago sativa by 15N labelling, carbohydrate analyses and by measuring time course of several enzymes activities. When photosynthesis decreased during early regrowth, and consequently reduced availability of carbon skeletons within the plant, both nitrogen (N) uptake (lolium perene) and N2 fixatlon (Medicago saliva) decreased. Nilrogenase, as well as nitrate reductase activities, decreased. The materials used as plant growth media during surface mine· reclamation are frequently low in available N, P and K and are drought­prone. Legumes are included in reclamation seeding mixtures . because of their symbiotic N2-fixation ability but competition may prevent establishment or reduce persistence. A field study was conducted to test the hypothesis that intermittent clipping of these sites would reduce grass competition and thereby maintain legume stands. The experiment was conducted to determine effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilisers on forage yield and quality of dwarf napiergrass (Pennisteum purpuretum). Four levels of N (460, 690, 920 and 1150 kg/ha), and 4 levels of K2O (150, 300, 450 and 600 kg/ha), and 1 level of P2O5 (144 kg/ha), were applied. Forage yield, leaf area per tiller, leaf elongation rate and forage quality of dwarf napiergrass were increased when N level applied was increased. Digitaria eriantha was grown from seed collected from low and high nutrient habitats. The plants were grown with either a high or low nutrient supply for 12 weeks. Rates of nitrogen and phosphorus absorption were measured on excised roots using colorimetric assays. The grasses from the low nutrient areas achieved the same maximum uptake rates regardless of the level of N supplied, This was not so for the grasses from the high nutrient site which increased their uptake rates with increased N supply. Cutting and grazing experiments were conducted in a subtropical environment to determine whether a relationship existed between differences measured in ryegrass cultivars from cutting experiments and milk production differences under grazing. Differences in dry mauer (OM) production under cutting between the standard annual ryegrass for the subtropics (Grasslands Tama) and a cultivar selected for superior performance under subtropical conditions (Midmar) averaged 31 %, differences in feed on offer under grazing averaged 21 %, while milk production differences averaged 10% in a 2-year study. A 3-year study was conducted lo determine the influence of 2 herbicides (2,4-D and glyphosate) and 3 fertilisers (containing N, P or K), in conjunctiun with pasture renovation, on ragwort (Senecio jacobaea L.) populations and pasture productivity in a perennial ryegrass-white clover hill country pasture. Glyphosate-treated plots often contained higher ragwort numbers than 2,4-D treated plots, probably because the glyphosate treatment caused greater discontinuity of pasture. Captive brant Branta bernicla were fed a range of food plants to determine their ability to digest nitrogen and specifically soluble protein. Intensive utilization of autumn regrowth for forage production was compared to other autumn treatments in nine seed production fields of meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis) during 1993-96. Uncut plots without a N application in autumn always had the lowest number of reproductive tillers and the lowest subsequent year seed yields. Intensive utilization of regrowth, by application of 80 kg N ha-1 immediately after seed harvest and forage harvests in September or October, did not have any negative impact on the following yearsí seed yields. In seed production experiments with timothy (Phleum pratense L.) split application of 25 kg N ha-1 as early as possible in spring (mean date 17 April) plus 50 kg ha-1 at the start of tiller elongation (mean date 19 May) increased seed yields compared to only one application of 75 or 100 kg N ha-1 in mid-May. After 16 years of grazing ‘Coastal’ and common bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] pastures each at 3 levels of forage mass, N vs non-N fertilizer was superimposed to assess stand maintenance of bermudagrass and cow-calf performance. After 7 additional years of fertility treatments, N plus overseeded ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) provided for 202 days grazing; whereas, K plus overseeded clovers (Trifolium incarnatum L.) and (T. vesiculosum Savi.) provided adequate forage for 179 days grazing.
