Groundwater Study Of The Nyabing Townsite, Louise Hopgood

Resource management technical reports

A groundwater study was carried out in the townsite of Nyabing, Western Australia. The study presents a model of the hydrogeology below the town and defines management options to help limit damage to infrastructure from surface water and groundwater rise. A drilling program and expansion of the network of monitoring bores were also part of the study.

The Cooperative Extension Service is challenged to assess the needs of customers who are unable or unwilling to try new production techniques with the potential to increase profitability. Precision Farming (PF) is a production technique that has the goal of maximizing economic potential by using technology that recognizes variability within fields. Ample research from the last decade shows that precision technologies hold promise for enhanced agricultural profitability. A study conducted in three Central Kentucky counties in 2001 shows that farmers obtain information for decision-making related to PF technologies from their local fertilizer dealer and the Cooperative Extension Service but are …

Industrial development influences the natural and human environment. At the local scale, the most intensive industrial pollution is in the area of factories and industrial centers. Industrial pollution is concentrated in soil and vegetation (then, using water systems and trophic chains it may enter all ecosystem components). The industrial pollution of the Sudbury region includes mostly sulfur dioxide and heavy metals. The main goal of this study was to examine spatial variability in metal distribution in soil for the Sudbury area. Knowing the proportion of particle sizes in soil is important to soil scientists and agronomists. The mixture of sand, silt, and clay influences water movement, solute transport, nutrient retention, and many other properties and processes in soil. The standard method for particle size determination is a somewhat time-consuming process. An equally accurate but shorter method would be appealing for many reasons. The objective of this study was to compare a standard method of particle-size analysis using a hydrometer to an abbreviated hydrometer method, which, instead of 12 h for the standard method, requires about 3 h to complete. Anisotropy And Its Relation To Liquefaction Resistance Of Granular Material, Isao Ishibashi, Omer F. Capar

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This research establishes quantitative relationships between soil's anisotropy and liquefaction resistance for granular materials. Uniform medium density (Dr = 50%) sand specimens were prepared using three different sample preparation techniques (air pluviated (AP), moist tamped (NIT), and moist vibrated (MV)) to create different initial soil fabrics. Undrained cyclic triaxial tests were then performed to determine the liquefaction resistance of each soil specimen. On the same specimens in the triaxial cell, vertical and horizontal compression wave velocities and vertical shear wave velocity (Vs) were measured using piezoelectric bender elements.
