Profitable Canola Production In The South Coastal Region 2000, David Eksteen

Why grow canola in the South Coast Region? Canola is a member of the Brassicaceae family, which also includes mustard, turnip, wild radish, cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli. It is a winter growing oilseed that can be produced in most arable areas of Australia where winter crops are currently grown. Originally known as rapeseed using the species B. campestris, the species of B. napus have almost completely replaced this earlier species in all the areas where the crop is grown.

Small rural holdings are often owned by people who want to pursue a semi-rural lifestyle but who are inexperienced in land management issues. This can result in landholders stocking their properties with animals at rates higher than the land resources can sustain, leading to degradation problems such as soil erosion, water pollution and damage to vegetation. This document provides information and guidelines to help planners, developers, local authorities and land owners determine the base stocking rates for rural small holdings on the Swan Coastal Plain and Darling Scarp and immediate surrounds. We have come a long way over the past three or four years in terms of both, the level of understanding and recognition of Soil Acidity as a major land degradation issue for the wheatbelt of Western Australia, and, in our actions to treat the problem.

During 1999 there were three very significant changes relating to acid soils in Western Australia.

• Lime use in WA increased by over 200,000 tonnes from 1998 to 1999 to a record 653,000 tonnes, which was double the amount applied in 1997.

Land resources series

This report presents results from soil and landform mapping at a scale of 1:150,000 in the Katanning area of Western Australia. It is accompanied by two soil-landscape maps covering 1.45 million hectares in the Kojonup and Darkan area (map 1) and the Katanning and Dumbleyung area (map 2). Most of the Katanning survey occurs within the Blackwood River catchment but also covers the upper catchments of the Pallinup, Frankland-Gordon and Tone-Warren Rivers. The Katanning survey falls within the Narrogin and Katanning advisory districts for Agriculture Western Australia. The efficiency of drip irrigation is highly dependent on evaporation losses occurring from the constantly saturated soil beneath emitters. Advent of subsurface drip irrigation is in part an approach to curb this inefficiency. An irrigation method, Sand Tube Irrigation (STI), is proposed to increase the efficiency of “Normal” surface applied drip Irrigation (NI method) on permanent tree crops without the need for burying the irrigation tubing. The sand tube consists of removing a soil core beneath the emitter and filling the void with coarse sand. A weighing lysimeter was constructed in the laboratory and instrumented to directly measure temporal evaporation …

Turf generally can be improved through proper mowing, fertilizing, watering, and pest control applications. With some turf problems, however, the only solution is re-establishment, using one of two methods:

• The conventional method, which involves destroying the sod, tilling the soil, and replanting.
• Renovation, which involves replanting without completely tilling the soil and often without destroying all existing vegetation.

Advantages of conventional tillage over renovation:

• Control of weeds and undesirable grass may be more complete.
• Surface depressions or humps can be removed, resulting in a smoother soil surface.

In response to concerns that high yields of alfalfa need to be fertilized with sulfur (S) because of soil depletion of S and less S entering the soil from atmospheric fallout, studies were conducted during 1998-1999, to test for S response by alfalfa. Additionally, alfalfa was tested for magnesium (Mg) response because previous hay analysis from the study site had shown very low levels of Mg.

Soil testing is a program that includes taking samples from a field or site, performing a laboratory analysis, and making recommendations for lime and crop nutrients. Good results from this program depend on several supporting factors: (I) obtaining samples representative of the soil in a field area or site; (2) using good techniques in the laboratory that give accurate indications of the nutrient status of the sampled area; and (3) having an extensive data base for making lime and nutrient recommendations from the analytical results.

Alfalfa hay production removes large amounts of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) from soils. Because of this, there is always interest in the reduction of soil test phosphorus (STP) and soil test potassium (STK) levels by high-yielding alfalfa. Periodic soil sampling for 2 years during an on-farm· fertilizer study on a high yielding alfalfa field provided an insight into this.
