Control Of Four O'Clock (Oxalis Purpurea) In Cereals., J. R. Peirce, B. J. Rayner Jan 1987

Control Of Four O'Clock (Oxalis Purpurea) In Cereals., J. R. Peirce, B. J. Rayner

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 87KA85

Because of the late dry season, yields were below expected. Under these conditions there were high visual crop damages recorded early after the treatments applied.

Chemical Control Of Skeleton Weed., J. R. Peirce, B. J. Rayner Jan 1987

Chemical Control Of Skeleton Weed., J. R. Peirce, B. J. Rayner

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial PE17

Tordon 50 D & Lontrel L appear to be the only chemicals that will give effective reduction in the density of skeleton weed. However both these chemicals also removed all other broadleaved weeds present (capeweed, clover and flatweed), leaving the treated areas grass dominant.

Lincoln Weed Control In Cereals And Pasture., I. Hudson, R. Ramm Jan 1987

Lincoln Weed Control In Cereals And Pasture., I. Hudson, R. Ramm

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 87LG62 - Lincoln weed control in cereals.

Blanket treatment with Glyphosate controlled some ryegrass. Additional treatment with Glean killed nearly all the ryegrass and gave the best kill of Lincoln weed.

Trial 87LG63 - Control of weed in pasture.

Ally and Glean although giving control, would be considered too phytotoxic to use on legume pastures. Applications of 2,4-D amine at 1 L would give marginal safety on Subterranean clovers, but would cause significant damage to medics.

Investigation Of A Saline Valley On Allandale Research Farm, D J. Mcfarlane, R Engel, A T. Ryder Jan 1987

Investigation Of A Saline Valley On Allandale Research Farm, D J. Mcfarlane, R Engel, A T. Ryder

Resource management technical reports

Geophysical surveys and drilling were used to investigate a saline valley on Allandale Research Farm. These techniques showed that the geology is controlling the location of two main areas of saline seeps and they identified another area at risk of increased salinity. They were also used to obtain information on the groundwater system and to assist in making management recommendations.

Electromagnetic terrain conductivity surveys showed that the most saline soils occurred upstream of a cross-cutting magnetic anomaly caused by a dolerite dyke. A seismic survey showed that the anomaly coincided with a bedrock rise. This bedrock rise restricts groundwater flow …

Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus Jan 1987

Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Department of Agriculture established 121 trials in its Narrogin advisory district starting in 1972 to measure the effect of bulldozer and grader built seepage interceptor banks and drains on the topsoil salinity of the land downslope of them.

After 14 years of moniterin, there was no evidence that seepage interceptor drains and banks reduced the top soil salinity on 10 of the 11 sites in the Pingelly, Brookton and Wickepin Shires.

Mogumber Drainage Works Succeed, L K. Lenane Jan 1987

Mogumber Drainage Works Succeed, L K. Lenane

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The loss of arable farmland from soil erosion, waterlogging and salinity is a severe problem on some Western Australian farms.

When the arable land comprises only 40 per cent of the total area within the Mogumber Soil Conservation District, this loss is a real cause for concern. So too is the resulting damage to roads, siltation of railway culverts, and deaths of roadside trees from rising saline watertables.

However, drainage, contour and other works undertaken by the Mogumber Soil Conservation District have halted this degredation. Badly eroded areas that were fenced off now have a satisfactory ground cover. A wheat …

Effect Of Agronomic Practices On Wheat Protein Levels, M G. Mason Jan 1987

Effect Of Agronomic Practices On Wheat Protein Levels, M G. Mason

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

High grain protein levels are preferred for many end-uses of wheat. However, there has been little or no incentive for farmers to use practices which would increase protein levels, because wheat payments are made without a price differential for proteinlevel, except where wheat could qualify for the Australian Hard grade.

Acid Rain: A Problem On Agronomic Crops And Soils In Kentucky??, John H. Grove

Soil Science News and Views

Although the general issue of atmospheric pollution is complex, the image of beautiful lakes without aquatic life has focussed public attention on the acidity, or pH, of rainfall. Kentucky does receive acid rain (see map). This discussion will seek to define atmospheric acidity and its deposition and describe reported effects on agronomic crops and soils.
