Soil salinity problems have long been recognised in Western Australia. The earliest published explanation in 1924 suggested that removing native vegetation increased stream salinity, and this basic cause has been confirmed by many studies since.

Saltland can be conveniently divided into three main types on the basis of cause. Within each type their is great variation, and the types may merge or overlap.
The three aims of a saltland treatment programme are; reduce the groundwater levels or seepage flows as much as possible,reduce the capillary action which brings salt to the surface, and to revegetate the soils with the most useful plants that can survive.

Of the estimated 76 000 farm dams in the wheatbelt, about 8 per cent either leak or are salt affected. The remaining 70 000 dams are capable of holding water for livestock use and can be regarded as sercicable dams.
A great many of the serviceable dams are unreliable water supplies due to the combined effects of lack of runoff from catchments, shallow depth of storage and small size of storage in relation to expected demand from livestock and evaporation loss.

Research over the past 10 years has shown that it is technically possible to seal many leaking farm dams. In some situations a cheap chemical treatment is effective but in most cases it is cheaper to construct a replacement dam.
This article reviews the situation in western Australia and outlines some of the methods used for sealing dams.

The Soil Conservation Act of 1945 set up within the Department of Agriculture a Soil Conservation Service under the control of a Commissioner of Soil Conservation.
The Service aims to promote types of land use which will conserve the soil and prevent or overcome soil erosion. It also aims to educate landholders and the public generally in the aims and practice of soil conservation.
This article relates mainly to farm land activities, and in particular the co-operation of the Service with individual primary producer landholders for the prevention and control of erosion on their land.

A review of 14 years of Department of Agriculture research into the effects of wheatbelt fanning practices on soil structure reaches the general conclusion that cultivation and grazing practices influence soil structure, and that structure can be improved by soil amendments and pasture growth.
Little data has been obtained to relate plant growth to improved soil structure, as measured.

They also realise that dust storms mean soil loss from paddocks, but until now there has been little idea of the effect of these storms on crop yields in subsequent seasons.

Soil and plant analysis (testing) has its supporters and its critics. Some of the differences are resolved if the distinction is made between the concept and the practice. Most people would agree with the concept of soil and plant analysis but the practice, or service offered, in any agricultural situation can be subject to valid criticism.
This article defines some of the principles involved and illustrates some of the problems, to provide a better understanding of the usefulness and the limitations of soil and plant analysis as a diagnostic aid in plant and animal nutrition.

Mr. C. V. Malcolm, a research officer with the Soils Division, presented a paper entitled "Establishing Shrubs in Saline Environments" at a symposium on Useful Wildland Shrubs, Their Biology and Utilisation, at Utah State University, Logan, Utah.
The conclusion to Mr. Malcolm's review, set out below, summarises much of what is known about shrub establishment in saline areas.

LACK of good quality water in many parts of Western Australia often forces people to use salty water for irrigation and gardening.
This article gives some hints on how to reduce salt damage to plants when salty water must be used for irrigation or gardening.
It includes a table of plants which may be irrigated with water of varying degrees of salinity and lists precautions which should be taken for each group.

Mr. G. H. Burvill (63) retired on September 3 as Assistant Director of Agriculture after 44 years with the Department of Agriculture. He joined the Department as a cadet in 1927.
One of Western Australia's best-known agricultural scientists, Mr. Burvill has had an important influence on many aspects of the State's farming industries over more than 30 years.
He has an unequalled knowledge of the State's soils, climate and agriculture.

With the introduction of low sulphur compound and concentrated fertilisers, a new look is required at the sulphur status of West Australian soils, and the sulphur requirement of pasture.
In this article the functions of sulphur, deficiency symptoms and potential problem soils are described.

IN the 22 to 28 inch rainfall belt of the West Kimberley area of Western Australia are extensive areas of what is locally known as "pindan" country.
The term "pindan" refers to a light red or yellow sandy soil type supporting scattered Eucalypts, sparse-dense wattle scrub and grasses such as curly spinifex, ribbon grass and native sorghum.

PASPALUM VAGINATUM, aptly termed "sea shore paspalum" has an amazing ability to thrive in wet salty situations. It is also a good lawn grass.
Seed of the grass is not available but it may easily be established by planting pieces.

BECAUSE Western Australian soils are low in phosphorus, frequent applications of superphosphate are required for both crop and pasture production. The recommended rates are determined from the results of field experiments that test different quantities of super and measure the extra yield.
