Detection Of Arbitrarily Large Dynamic Ground Motions With A Dense High-Rate Gps Network, Yehuda Bock, Linette Prawirodirdjo, Timothy I. Melbourne

We describe the detection of teleseismic surface waves from the 3 November 2002 Mw 7.9 Denali fault earthquake in Alaska with a dense network of 1 Hz GPS stations in southern California, about 3900 km from the event. Relative horizontal displacements with amplitudes in excess of 15 mm and duration of 700 seconds agree with integrated velocities recorded by nearby broadband seismometers with an rms difference of 2–3 mm. The displacements are derived from independent 1 Hz instantaneous positions demonstrating that a GPS network can provide direct measurements of arbitrarily large dynamic and static ground horizontal displacements at periods longer …

QAP-3.0 (Scientific Investigation Control) of the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN) Quality Assurance (QA) program requires that, prior to initiating work, a Scientific Investigation Plan (SIP) must be prepared and approved. This SIP is intended to cover the seismic monitoring task performed by the Nevada Seismological Laboratory (NSL). The purpose of this SIP is to describe the high-level planning for the overall task such that it can be referred to by individual scientific notebooks. Due to the continuation nature of this task, this SIP contains language that may be considered generic so that new subtasks …

Under subcontract (DOE/UCCSN DE-FC28-98NV12081, Task 7) from the Seismological Laboratory of the University of Nevada-Reno, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), has designed, installed, and operated a laser strainmeter (LSM) in the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. This instrument provides precise deformation monitoring of the (proposed) repository block. This document describes the history of the installation, outlines the principles of operation of the system, documents the integral recording and control system and file formats used, and provides information on how QA has been implemented, with the aim of being a self-contained description which could be used …

Publications (YM)
Starting on October 1, 1995, the monitoring of seismicity within the southern Great Basin near Yucca Mountain was performed with a new digital network. This network features three-component recording with 24-bit A/D conversion in the field. Continuous data are collected at 20 sps, and event triggered windows are collected at 100 sps. A seismic bulletin of events is made by automatically associating triggers among stations, classifying the local earthquake events, and locating the earthquakes and computing their magnitudes with conventional methods. This report covers the operational and seismic results of the sixth full year (FY01) of the improved, digitally based, …

Aftershocks And Pore Fluid Diffusion Following The 1992 Landers Earthquake, William Bosl, A Nur
Aftershocks And Pore Fluid Diffusion Following The 1992 Landers Earthquake, William Bosl, A Nur
Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications
We model the evolution of regional stress following the 1992 Landers earthquake in order to test the importance of pore fluid flow in producing aftershocks. Rising fluid pressure due to pore fluid flow and the resulting Coulomb stress changes were found to be strongly correlated with the time and location of aftershock events. Regional aftershock frequencies computed by integrating pore pressure decay rates also agreed quite well with aftershock data. Calculations show that regions of rising postseismic poroelastic Coulomb stress overlap considerably with regions of positive coseismic Coulomb stress. Thus pore fluid flow, which affects pore pressure within faults and …

Except for the recent rumblings of a few moderate earthquakes and the eruption of Mt. St. Helen's, all has been relatively quiet on the Pacific Northwestern front. The Cascades region in the Pacific Northwest, a sporadically active earthquake and volcanic zone, still has great seismic potential [Atwater, 1987], as comparisons with other subduction zones around the world have shown [Heaton and Kanamori, 1984]. Recent tsunami propagation models [Satake, 1996] and tree ring studies suggest that the last great Cascadia earthquake occurred in the winter of 1700 A.D. and had a magnitude of −8.9. The …
On The Linear Relation Between Mb And Ms For Discrimination Between Explosions And Earthquakes, Ali A. Nowroozi
On The Linear Relation Between Mb And Ms For Discrimination Between Explosions And Earthquakes, Ali A. Nowroozi
OES Faculty Publications
Summary. The statistical capability of the mb :Ms, discriminant for the discrimination of earthquake and explosion populations is examined by application of discriminant functions to a group of 83 explosions and 72 earthquakes in Eurasia. Equations are derived for the probability that an event is an earthquake or an explosion. The positive sign of DIS in the decision index equation,
DIS, = 34.3383 - 11.9569 mbi, + 7.1 161 Msi,
indicates that the event i is an earthquake. Its negative sign indicates that event i is an explosion. The probability of …
