An Integrated Geological And Geophysical Study Of The Fresh And Brackish Water Boundary In The Hueco Bolson, West Texas, Sandy Stephanie Marrufo Jan 2011

An Integrated Geological And Geophysical Study Of The Fresh And Brackish Water Boundary In The Hueco Bolson, West Texas, Sandy Stephanie Marrufo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The Hueco Bolson in West Texas is located in the Rio Grande rift basin and provides water to El Paso County, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. El Paso Water Utilities (EPWU) drilled many wells up to 1000 ft (305) m into this aquifer, which provide 40% of El Paso's water supply. Stratigraphy and sedimentation in active extensional basins have received little study because they are usually buried and this research helped document these processes. The study area within the West Texas region of the Hueco Bolson Aquifer (HBA) lies within a transition zone between the fresh and brackish water sections of …

Joint Geophysical Data Analysis For Geothermal Energy Exploration, Antony Munika Wamalwa Jan 2011

Joint Geophysical Data Analysis For Geothermal Energy Exploration, Antony Munika Wamalwa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Geophysical data modelling often yields non-unique results and hence the interpretation of the resulting models in terms of underlying geological units and structures is not a straightforward problem. However, if multiple datasets are available for a region of study, an integrated interpretation of models for each of the geophysical data may results to a more realistic geological description. This study not only demonstrates the strength of resistivity analysis for geothermal fields but also the gains from interpreting resistivity data together with other geophysical data such as gravity and seismic data. Various geothermal fields have been examined in this study which …

Evaluating Suspended Dust Particulate Matter From Anthropogenically - Altered Lands, Roberto Velarde Jan 2011

Evaluating Suspended Dust Particulate Matter From Anthropogenically - Altered Lands, Roberto Velarde

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Substantial dust loads are transported from drylands including the Saharan, Asian, and Chihuahuan Desert deposits by localized to planetary-scale processes to nearby and distal sites. These dusts may carry harmful constituents. To evaluate dust movement patterns and characteristics relative to carried constituents, three studies are presented comprising (A) Localized displacement of uranium and progeny radionuclides from high-grade uranium ore storage piles at Peña Blanca, Chihuahua, Mexico; (B) Long-distance transport of plutonium via Saharan and Asian aeolian pathways; and (C) Dust movement patterns in military maneuvering and non-maneuvering areas at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), New Mexico. Study (A) evaluated surface …

An Investigation Of The Seismic Hazards Of The El Paso-Juarez Region: The Nature And Extent Of The Southern East Franklin Mountains Fault Zone, Victor Manuel Avila Jan 2011

An Investigation Of The Seismic Hazards Of The El Paso-Juarez Region: The Nature And Extent Of The Southern East Franklin Mountains Fault Zone, Victor Manuel Avila

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

The El Paso-Ciudad Juarez Region is situated at the southern end of the active Rio Grande Rift within the Mesilla and Hueco basins. The Hueco basin is separated from the eastern Franklin Mountains by a prominent fault, the Eastern Boundary Fault. Studies of this fault have revealed fault scarps that displace Quaternary deposits (Keaton et al., 1995; Raney and Collins, 1990; Lovejoy, 1976). This fault is cataloged as an active fault in the National Seismic Hazard Map with an estimated slip rate of 0.1 mm/yr. A fault with similar characteristics as the Eastern Boundary Fault extends further to the …

Seismological Studies In South-Central Alaska And Northern Mexico, Oscar Mario Romero De La Cruz Jan 2011

Seismological Studies In South-Central Alaska And Northern Mexico, Oscar Mario Romero De La Cruz

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The work in this study is focused on two different areas, south-central Alaska and northern Mexico. In the first study area, I calculated dynamic stress drops for moderate sized earthquakes and performed receiver function analyses. The goal of the stress drop studies was to determine if events occurring within the more strongly coupled portion of the subducting slab have higher stress drops. My results shows that higher stress drops correspond to the locked and strongly coupled region in Prince William Sound, and lower stress drops are associated with the Cook Inlet region, a zone of relaxation of the plate interface. …

On Constrained Optimization Schemes For Joint Inversion Of Geophysical Datasets, Uram Anibal Sosa Aguirre Jan 2011

On Constrained Optimization Schemes For Joint Inversion Of Geophysical Datasets, Uram Anibal Sosa Aguirre

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In the area of geological sciences, there exist several experimental techniques used to advance in the understanding of the Earth. We implement a joint inversion least-squares (LSQ) algorithm to characterize one dimensional Earth's structure by using seismic shear wave velocities as a model parameter. We use two geophysical datasets sensitive to shear velocities, namely Receiver Function and Surface Wave dispersion velocity observations, with a choice of an optimization method: Truncated Singular Value Decomposition (TSVD) or Primal-Dual Interior-Point (PDIP). The TSVD and the PDIP methods solve a regularized unconstrained and a constrained minimization problem, respectively. Both techniques include bounds into the …

Kinematic And Dynamic Pair Collision Statistics Of Sedimenting Inertial Particles Relevant To Warm Rain Initiation, Bogdan Rosa, Hossein Parishani, Orlando Ayala, Lian-Ping Wang, Wojciech W. Grabowski Jan 2011

Kinematic And Dynamic Pair Collision Statistics Of Sedimenting Inertial Particles Relevant To Warm Rain Initiation, Bogdan Rosa, Hossein Parishani, Orlando Ayala, Lian-Ping Wang, Wojciech W. Grabowski

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

In recent years, direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach has become a reliable tool for studying turbulent collision-coalescence of cloud droplets relevant to warm rain development. It has been shown that small-scale turbulent motion can enhance the collision rate of droplets by either enhancing the relative velocity and collision efficiency or by inertia-induced droplet clustering. A hybrid DNS approach incorporating DNS of air turbulence, disturbance flows due to droplets, and droplet equation of motion has been developed to quantify these effects of air turbulence. Due to the computational complexity of the approach, a major challenge is to increase the range of …

The Spatial Distribution Of Solar Radiation Under A Melting Arctic Sea Ice Cover, Karen E. Frey, Donald K. Perovich, Bonnie Light Jan 2011

The Spatial Distribution Of Solar Radiation Under A Melting Arctic Sea Ice Cover, Karen E. Frey, Donald K. Perovich, Bonnie Light

Geography

The sea ice cover of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas is currently undergoing a fundamental shift from multiyear ice to first-year ice. Field observations of sea ice physical and optical properties were collected in this region during June-July 2010, revealing unexpectedly complex spatial distributions of solar radiation under the melt-season ice cover. Based on our optical measurements of first-year ice, we found the under-ice light field in the upper ocean to be spatially heterogeneous and dependent on wavelength, ice thickness, and the areal and geometric distribution of melt ponded and bare ice surfaces. Much of the observed complexity in radiation …

Surface Wave Inversion Of The Upper Mantle Velocity Structure In The Ross Sea Region, Western Antarctica, James D. Rinke Jan 2011

Surface Wave Inversion Of The Upper Mantle Velocity Structure In The Ross Sea Region, Western Antarctica, James D. Rinke

All Master's Theses

The Ross Sea in Western Antarctica is the locale of several extensional basins formed during Cretaceous to Paleogene rifting. Several seismic studies along the Transantarctic Mountains and Victoria Land Basin’s Terror Rift have shown a general pattern of fast seismic velocities in East Antarctica and slow seismic velocities in West Antarctica. This study focuses on the mantle seismic velocity structure of the West Antarctic Rift System in the Ross Embayment and adjacent craton and Transantarctic Mountains to further refine details of the velocity structure.

Teleseismic events were selected to satisfy the two-station great-circle-path method between 5 Polar Earth Observing Network …

Towards An Integrated Multiscale Simulation Of Turbulent Clouds On Petascale Computers, Lian-Ping Wang, Orlando Ayala, Hossein Parishani, Wojciech W. Grabowski, Andrzej A. Wyszogrodzki, Zbigniew Piotrowski, Guang R. Gao, Chandra Kambhamettu, Xiaoming Li, Louis Rossi

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

The development of precipitating warm clouds is affected by several effects of small-scale air turbulence including enhancement of droplet-droplet collision rate by turbulence, entrainment and mixing at the cloud edges, and coupling of mechanical and thermal energies at various scales. Large-scale computation is a viable research tool for quantifying these multiscale processes. Specifically, top-down large-eddy simulations (LES) of shallow convective clouds typically resolve scales of turbulent energy-containing eddies while the effects of turbulent cascade toward viscous dissipation are parameterized. Bottom-up hybrid direct numerical simulations (HDNS) of cloud microphysical processes resolve fully the dissipation-range flow scales but only partially the inertial …

Receiver Function Studies Of Crustal Structure, Composition, And Evolution Beneath The Afar Depression, Ethiopia, Sattam A. Almadani Jan 2011

Receiver Function Studies Of Crustal Structure, Composition, And Evolution Beneath The Afar Depression, Ethiopia, Sattam A. Almadani

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation utilizes a set of sophisticated computer programs developed at the Geophysics group at Missouri S&T to characterize crustal properties beneath the Afar Depression in Ethiopia where extensional tectonics dominates. In this study, measurements of crustal thickness (H), crustal mean Vp/Vs [which is related to Poisson's ratio (Σ)], and the sharpness of the Moho (R) were determined using teleseismic data from 18 broadband seismic sensors that we deployed along a profile of 250 km long with a station spacing of ~ 10 km. The stations had been recording continuously for an entire year from December 2009 until December 2010. …

A Geological And Geophysical Study Of The Tendaho Graben In The Afar Depression, Ethiopia: Insights Into Transitional Continental Rifting, David Lee Bridges Jan 2011

A Geological And Geophysical Study Of The Tendaho Graben In The Afar Depression, Ethiopia: Insights Into Transitional Continental Rifting, David Lee Bridges

Doctoral Dissertations

"A detailed magnetic and gravity study across the Tendaho Graben (the Red Sea propagator within the Afar Depression, Ethiopia) revealed features that can best be interpreted as a continental rift undergoing oceanization. This NW-trending extensional structure is ~50 km wide and it is confined within well-developed NW-trending boarder faults that deform the 2 km thick and ~ 2 Ma basaltic flows of the Afar Stratoids. The age of the basaltic flows becomes progressively younger inward from the boarder faults until it reaches ~30,000 years close to the rift axis. The central part of the Tendaho Graben is characterized by a …

Two New Spline-Based Methods And Real Data Applications: High-Resolution Receiver Function Calculations From Teleseismic Broadband Waveforms And High-Accuracy Practical Potential-Field Integral Transformations, Bingzhu Wang Jan 2011

Two New Spline-Based Methods And Real Data Applications: High-Resolution Receiver Function Calculations From Teleseismic Broadband Waveforms And High-Accuracy Practical Potential-Field Integral Transformations, Bingzhu Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

"While receiver function (RF) calculation is fundamentally important and widely used, it is not well solved due to unstable deconvolution. A spline-based RF calculation method was proposed and it is demonstrated that both individual RFs and the stacked RF calculated with the spline method have sharper peaks than those with the water-level spectral division method and the iterative deconvolution method. At the common peaks on the stacked RFs, there are close similarities for all three RF calculation methods. The better calculated RFs with the spline method lead to improved H - K analysis and improved determination of the optimal Moho …

Apparent Weekly And Daily Earthquake Periodicities In The Western United States, And Evolution Of Wadi Kubbania In Egypt, Ali Hadi Atef Jan 2011

Apparent Weekly And Daily Earthquake Periodicities In The Western United States, And Evolution Of Wadi Kubbania In Egypt, Ali Hadi Atef

Doctoral Dissertations

"The dissertation consists of two separate sections. The first section is on apparent daily and weekly periodicities in earthquake occurrence in the western United State [sic]. Analysis of Apparent Seismicity Rate (ASR) in the western United States confirmed the existence of prominent spectral peaks with a period of 1 and 7 days. The number of recorded earthquakes on Sundays for the duration of 1963-2008 is about 5% higher than that on weekdays, and, more significantly, there is a 9% increase of ASR in the early morning compared with that in the middle of the days. Significant similarities between the spatial …

Impacts Of Artificial Reefs On Surrounding Ecosystems, Sarine Manoukian Jan 2011

Impacts Of Artificial Reefs On Surrounding Ecosystems, Sarine Manoukian

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Artificial reefs are becoming a popular biological and management component in shallow water environments characterized by soft seabed, representing both important marine habitats and tools to manage coastal fisheries and resources. An artificial reef in the marine environment acts as an open system with exchange of material and energy, altering the physical and biological characteristics of the surrounding area. Reef stability will depend on the balance of scour, settlement, and burial resulting from ocean conditions over time. Because of the unstable nature of sediments, they require a detailed and systematic investigation.

Acoustic systems like high-frequency multibeam sonar are efficient tools …
