Conservation and Survey Division: Faculty and Staff Publications

Nebraska is underlain by rocks of Mississippian and (or) Pennsylvanian age in all but the extreme northeastern part of the State. Only some of the Upper Pennsylvanian strata are exposed; outcrops of these rocks are limited to southeaster Nebraska. This work is published as Conservation and Survey Division GSI-5 and as U.S. Geological Survey PP-1110-P.

During 1978, there were active in Nebraska 33 limestone quarries; 593 sand, gravel and silt or siltstone pits; 7 clay or shale pits; 21 sandstone pits; and 1 peat pit. These 655 mining operations disturbed 892 acres and restored 363 acres during the year. Available as PDF.

Detailed field mapping of surface outcrops in southern Garden County, Nebraska, has revealed a drop of 200 feet in three miles in the elevation of the contact between the Ogallala and pre-Ogallala (probably Brule) Formations exposed on the east side of Rush Creek. Beds of silt, sand, siltstone, and volcanic ash in the are a locally dip to the northwest at angles of up to 8½°. The contact between the two formations cannot be seen on the west side of Rush Creek but beds in the Ogallala Formation there dip to the north and northeast. The unusually long valley of …

Structural Geology Of The Brentwood-St. Paul Area, Northwest Arkansas, Mikel R. Shinn

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Photogeologic and field mapping of a 530 mi² area in southeastern Washington and southern Madison Counties, Arkansas, indicates that post-Atoka structural deformation occurred primarily through differential uplift of basement fault blocks. Northeast and east trending basement faults and fracture systems are present. Northeast trending features are related to the major fracture systems of the stable continental interior. They were initiated by shearing during Pre-Cambrian time and have subsequently acted as crustal zones of weakness along which mostly vertical movement has occurred. Morphology And Anatomy Of The Norwood Esker, Ontario, John Arthur Dixon

Over its 25 km. length the Norwood esker traverses two morphologically different areas, a northern section of kame, and a southern section of elongated drumlins. In the north the esker consists of single and multiple ridges: where multiple, the ridges are superimposed on a lower, broader, plateau-like base. In the south a high, steep-sided single ridge is present. In both areas, where single, the ridge splits locally into two narrower ridges which region a short distance downstream.

Internally, the esker contains mostly cross-laminated sands, tough-shaped and tabular sets of cross-bedded sands and gravel, and matrix-supported sandy gravels. The cross-laminated sands …
