Ash Hollow Creek is an intermittent stream forming a southern tributary to the North Platte River. The creek flows only in response to precipitation from locally heavy thunderstorms or to heavy runoff from melting snow in the spring. Western Nebraska has a semi-arid climate and receives less than 20 inches of rainfall per year. Vegetation in the park and surrounding area is typical of the short grass prairie of the Great Plains. Native short grasses grow abundantly on undisturbed tablelands, valley sides, and along principal flood plains of streams and rivers. Prickly pear, barrel cactus, yucca and sagebrush are common …

Relation Of Magnetic And Gravity Field Data To Selected Structural Elements Of The Central Portion Of The Arkoma Basin, John H. Mcbride

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In order to acquire a greater understanding of some of the major basement structural features characteristic of the Arkoma basin, magnetic and gravity data have been collected and analyzed for a selected area. Several anomalies exist and are found to be associated with faulting or major fracturing in the Precambrian basement. Modelling of source bodies based on magnetic and gravity values provides quantitative estimates of the depth as well as the geometry of basement structural geology.

A Statistical Analysis Of The Quality Of Surface Water In Nebraska, R. A. Engberg

This report provides descriptive statistics for 29 chemical or biological constituents for 109 stream sites in Nebraska sampled by the U.S. Geological Survey beginning in 1946. Also provided for each site are regression equations relating specific conductance to each of 12 chemical constituents and a regression equation relating specific conductance to stream discharge. The descriptive statistics are presented by river basins. Water leaving these basins that has the lowest mean specific conductance (266 umho/cm) is from the Niobrara River at Verdel, and water that has the highest (1,890 umho/cm) is from the South Platte River at Roscoe. Geology Of North Craters Of The Moon National Monument, Idaho, William C. Sidle

The purpose of the investigation was to map the geology of the north end of Craters of the Moon National Monument and surrounding area. A stratigraphic sequence of Late Paleozoic sedimentary and Tertiary volcanic rocks was compiles and the structures of these rocks and contact relationships with intrusions were delineated. Grade and facies of contact metamorphism were defined. The Snake River Plain basalts were also mapped. The sources of these flows were determined where possible. Preexisting structures and relationships of vents to earlier faulting were explored in ascertaining extensions of the Great Rift Zone into the Pioneer Mountains. Petrographic descriptions …

The Mitchell Pass Member of the Gering Formation was defined by Vondra, Schultz, and Stout in 1969 on the basis of exposures in the Wildcat Ridge area of western Nebraska. The basal part of the member in many areas of Wildcat Ridge is a pumice-pebble conglomerate bed. A newly discovered pumice-pebble conglomerate locality occurs north of Broadwater, Nebraska, some twenty miles east of the easternmost previously reported exposure of the pumice conglomerate at Redington Gap on Wildcat Ridge. Pumice samples from Redington Gap and Broadwater have the same index of refraction and similar inclusions. Beds above the conglomerate and below …
