"Increasing population and industrialization in Franklin County, Missouri, has led to increased demand for water. Much of this demand will be satisfied from ground water resources. Although the general geology of Franklin County has been mentioned in several publications, no detailed study of structure and ground water geology had been done. This thesis consists of study of stratigraphy, lithology, and geologic structure, and analysis of well log data to determine occurrence and availability of ground water, in the southern half of Franklin County.

"This thesis deals with stylolites, slump structures, sulfides in the oolitic limestone, and geometry of the bedded fluorite deposits in the Cave-In-Rock fluorspar district, southern Illinois. Stratigraphic zones studied were: 1) the upper part of the lower Fredonia limestone member, 2) the upper part of the upper Fredonia limestone member,,and 3) the upper part of the Renault formation.

Geometry of the ore rocks and related structures was investigated. Most of the ore is layered and constitutes part of the sedimentary strata.

A brief summary of the geography and geology of Thailand as a whole has been given as a general introduction to the source of the materials studied in this thesis.

The results of sieve analyses have shown that the sluice boxes do not effectively concentrate the cassiterite grain below 0.147 mm. from the rough concentrate treated in the tin-dressing shed.

"The once prosperous gold, silver, copper and lead mines of the Searchlight mining district, Nevada, are situated along the south and western margins of a large quartz monzonite body. This intrudes the Precambrian gneisses and younger lava flows. Associated mineral veins show an eccentric type of zoning around the intrusive.

Seven rock samples of the quartz monzonite representing different parts of the intrusive were analyzed petrographically and spectrographically. "Lenticular bodies of massive limestone, flanked by thin crinoidal beds, crop out in southwestern Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. They are within the St. Joe limestone of the Lower Mississippian.

Strata underlying these bodies typically are down-warped, those on the flanks lapping against, finally passing completely over the limestone core. Dips away from the “reef” are commonly around 5 degrees, but reach as much as 30 degrees. Conglomeratic detritus, originating from the core, occurs in flanking beds at their contact with it.

Thin sections of these masses show no more than 15 per cent of the limestone to consist of fossil …

"Petrographic, petrochemical and spectrographic studies were completed on selected Precambrian granitic rock samples from Southeastern Missouri. This investigation contributes to a more detailed knowledge of the Precambrian granitic rocks of this part of the state.

Petrographic analysis of forty-four thin sections of granitic rocks from the St. Francois Mountains area revealed six different granite types. These have been named the Fredericktown, Knoblick, Doerun, Graniteville, Klondike and Silvermine granites. These rocks form a large part of a composite batholith. More than one period of granitic intrusion is represented, but differentiation also contributed to the formation of this diversity of the rocks. …

Water well records in the offices of the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources provided data for a study of structure, lithology and occurrence of ground water. Water well drillers and property owners were interviewed to obtain additional information concerning drilling problems and quality of water.

The rocks outcropping in the quadrangle embrace Pre-Cambrian and Lower Paleozoic formations, the Potosi and Eminence being the most important formations with regard to the studied deposits.

The few structures present in the area of the vertical type and are more abundant in the southern part of the quadrangle.

"A geological investigation of the northeast portion of Des Arc Quadrangle in southeast Missouri was completed during the summer of 1958. Exposed Precambrian rocks include, from oldest to youngest, undifferentiated purple rhyolites with an interlayered tile-red rhyolite, andesine basalts with interlayered tuff, and an andesite. A diabase dike intrudes the lower purple rhyolites. The purple rhyolites account for about ninety-seven percent of the Precambrian exposures. The study consists of an investigation of the variation in the temperature of formation of sphalerite on the 500 and 1500 ft levels of the Balmat zinc deposit at Balmat, New York. A subsidiary investigation was performed on the use of x-ray fluorescence as a means of chemical quantitative analysis. Twelve samples of sphalerite from the 500 ft level and 13 samples from the 1500 ft level were analyzed for atomic percent iron content by measuring Zn/Fe x-ray fluorescent ratios. "The type locality of the Archusa marl member of the Wautubbee formation is situated south of Quitman, Clarke County, Mississippi. Stratigraphically, the unit falls within the middle Eocene Claiborne group, being roughly equivalent to the upper part of the Lisbon formation of Alabama and the lower part of the Cook Mountain. The marl falls within the Ostrea sellaefonnis zone and the zone of "Ceratobulimina eximia.” The type section consists of 48 feet of sandy marls, with a thin oyster bed near the middle.

The formations were sampled systematically at surface exposures on the northeast limb of the Lincoln Arch in the vicinity of Hannibal and Louisiana, Missouri. "This problem is an attempt to correlate grade of metamorphism (normally assumed to be temperature dependent) with the shape and dimensions of a solid miscibility gap. Such a correlation might permit mapping of a continuously variable function of metamorphism. The system, calcite and dolomite-ankerite, was chosen for study because of its relative simplicity. Samples of quartz-carbonate granulite were collected from the Waits River formation in southeastern Vermont through a range of metamorphic grades.
