These provide a large potential supply of ground water. Expansion of industries and population in the area since World War II has caused a demand for water. "A thick section of presumably Precambrian gneiss with thin intercalated bands of marble and schist has been mapped. There is structural continuity within these rock types as they are mutually intercalated, conformable, have gradational relations and show equal participation in the same individual fold. The layers of schist and marble in the gneiss can be followed over long distances. These rocks have undergone intense regional metamorphism, primarily dynamic, with a possible regional compressive force generated from NW-SE giving rise to sets of folds and faults in the area. Three pairs of these earstones normally are found: the sagitta, in the sacculus; the asteriscus, in the lagena; and the lapillus in the utriculus. In fishes other than the Order cypriniformes (carp, catfishes, and related forms), the sagitta is the largest otolith, and it may be used in taxonomic and other studies. "An exhaustive geological and geochemical study is presented of magnetite-chalcopyrite skarn deposits occurring within the thermal aureole of the Nicholas Denys quartz maonzonie-granodiorite stock. The deposits are crudely lenticular and occur in metamorphosed impure limestone and siliceous, in part limy, argillite-greywacke. These are now represented by andradite-epidote-diopside-calcite skarn and cal-silicate to horn-felsic rocks respectively. Both deposits are spatially related to the Main fault of the Rocky Brook-Millstream fault system; late, generally northwest trending transverse faults are conspicuous and are deemed of importance in ore localization"--Abstract, page [ii].

"Thirty samples of stream sediment from the North Fork River, Bryant Creek and related tributaries in south-central Missouri have been analyzed for cold-extractable copper, cold-extractable heavy metal, total copper and total zinc.

Cold-extractable copper varies from 0 to 10 ppm and averages less than 1 ppm; cold-extractable heavy metal varies from 3 to 30 ppm and averages 12 ppm; total copper varies from 50 to 200 ppm and averages 88 ppm; total zinc varies from 20 to 300 ppm and averages 86 ppm.

"The 'Old Workings Area,' so called for its early mining by the Incas, is located 4 1/2 miles northeast of the El Salvador Porphyry copper deposit, the third largest copper producer in Chile. The area mapped in this study is shown to consist of rhyolite pebble conglomerate, two volcanic flows, andesite and rhyolite porphyry, and two intrusions. Quartz porphyry and tourmaline-bearing breccia. Petrographic study of surface and drill core rock samples confirms the field nomenclature used for the five rock types. Genevieve Formation were studied megascopically in four quarries--Cave in Rock, Franklin, Three Rivers, and Fredonia Valley--within a small area of the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district and in a drill-core from the Cave in Rock Quarry. The rocks were studied microscopically in seventy-four thin sections prepared from samples from the quarries and the drill-core. The Ste. Genevieve Formation is typically an extremely oolitic, fragmentally fossiliferous limestone which is very light gray to white. "A vertical intensity magnetic survey of approximately 156 square miles in Cass County, central-west Missouri, revealed a broad circular anomaly whose magnetic relief exceeds 1000 gammas. Surface rocks are very gently inclined and are of Pennsylvanian age. Crystalline basement rocks are at a depth of approximately 2400 feet. Analysis of the data shows that the Belton anomaly consists of discontinuous smaller magnetic anomalies surrounding the central part of this broad anomaly. The central area of the Belton anomaly is occupied by a magnetic low. Analytical calculation showed that the source of the magnetic disturbance is at least 3650 feet below …

This bed is a massive crinoidal limestone in the Tri- State district of southwestern Missouri, northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas and is a part of the Mississippian Keokuk Formation.

Evaluation of the effects of reservoirs created by these dams on ground water conditions has not been published. Probably the dolomites of the Jefferson City Formation resulted from alteration at, or below the sea floor or the depositional interface and during diagenesis. This could then be used to locate points in a cave relative to the surface.

A 20 foot solenoid composed of four five-foot sections was built and magnetized by a lightweight rechargeable four-cell eight volt battery. The total weight of the equipment was 30 pounds.

"Petrographic and depositional environments studies were completed on selected Plattin Limestone rock-samples from the Drill-cores of Cliffdale Hollow area, Jefferson County, Missouri.

Petrographic analysis of forty-four thin sections and the detailed megascopic study of the samples revealed the different types of limestone rocks which were classified on the basis of Folk's (1959) Carbonate Classification. As to the environments of deposition of the Plattin Limestone determined by petrographic study, it has been concluded that this environment was one of low to medium agitation and low to medium organic activity.

In addition, volumetric estimates of known mineral components can be made providing they possess significantly different x-ray absorption characteristics.

Stereoscopic effect was most pronounced for specimens having well defined components of structure such as bedding, banding, lineation, inclusions, textural variations and moderate to large x-ray absorption differences. "Otoliths are calcareous bodies, of consistent form, secreted in the auditory labyrinths of some higher fishes. Of three pairs, only the taxonomically important earstones (sagittae) are considered here. Specifically, this study is restricted to the sagittae of beryciform fishes (Order Beryciformes). Removal of some taxa from the order, and the possible relating of others, is suggested.

The morphology of beryciform sagittae is described, and three basic supra-familial groups are recognized. Diagnostic characters for families are given, with diagnoses of genera added. Sagittae of characteristic species are illustrated.

The Precambrian rocks are granites and felsite. The Paleozoic rocks include the Potosi and Eminence Formations, of Upper Cambrian age, and the Gasconade Formation of Ordovician age. Distinction between the Potosi and Eminence Formations is difficult because of conformable and transitional relationships. "The Esterbrook area lies within the Laramie Range in Converse and Albany Counties, Wyoming. Exposures include Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks, the Tertiary White River formation, and Quaternary alluvium.

Hornblende schist and mica-quartz schist comprise the Precambrian metamorphic rocks. Foliation planes of these rocks trend northeast and dip steeply to the southeast. Metamorphic rocks of younger age probably lie to the southeast.

A distinctive, Precambrian silicic pluton of biotite-leucogranite with marginal zones of muscovite-leucogranite and alaskite passively intrudes the metamorphic rocks, generally parallel to the foliation trends. Numerous granite pegmatites show a zonal distribution around the pluton and appear to …

"Flame photometric analyses for K₂O and Na₂O were run on 31 samples of the Precambrian igneous rocks of Missouri. Samples were collected from the field, physically prepared and dissolved by a standard method and a modified standard method of rapid silicate analyses. The K₂O, Na₂O values obtained are averages between two methods of analyses. The modified method reduces by 80% the time required to chemically digest a rock sample. The results for both methods are not significantly different. Curtin and Company Advanced Flame Photometer was used.

"A simple method is developed for the calculation of the magnetic effect due to three-dimensional bodies. The method is based on the use of surface integration instead of volume integration. Thus, any three-dimensional body can be considered as having two surfaces, upper and lower, with magnetic pole distributions. Simple equations based on potential theory have been derived for the calculation of the vertical component and total intensity due to these surface distributions of poles. "Seismic refraction surveys were conducted in several localities within the east central Missouri clay districts in order to determine the applicability and economy of this method as a clay exploration tool. Results of these surveys revealed that the sink-type clay deposits possess lithologic and structural characteristics that lend themselves favorably to this method of exploration.

Seismic records obtained from profiles shot across known deposits indicate that several factors other than velocity contrast serve to produce apparent seismic anomalies.
