Utilization Of Paenibacillus Polymyxa In The Recovery Of Lithium Bearing Minerals, Diana Bullen
Utilization Of Paenibacillus Polymyxa In The Recovery Of Lithium Bearing Minerals, Diana Bullen
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
In the global transition to green energy in the transportation and power production sectors, lithium has emerged as a viable solution, and crucial component, for the effective storage of renewable resources. To avoid further degradation of the land due to mining for virgin material, methods focused on recovering lithium must be developed. This research project seeks to explore a new way to recover lithium by using the bacterium Paenibacillus polymyxa. The bacteria were grown and then applied to the lithium bearing mineral spodumene. Settling velocity profiles were constructed for different treatments of spodumene. It was found that the spodumene …
Advancement Of Full-Vector Variable-Temperature Magnetometry For Rock-Magnetic And Paleointensity Applications, Leonid Surovitskii
Advancement Of Full-Vector Variable-Temperature Magnetometry For Rock-Magnetic And Paleointensity Applications, Leonid Surovitskii
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Data on the variation of the direction and strength of Earth’s ancient magnetic field (absolute paleointensity) provide crucial information into the mechanisms of the geodynamo and the Earth’s thermal history. However, the use of conventional methods and instrumentation for absolute paleointensity determination has been hampered by physicochemical alteration of the samples caused by multiple high-temperature cycles and long experiment durations. The reliability and efficiency of the measurement process can be improved by the measurement of the full remanent magnetization vector simultaneously with the temperature cycling of a sample. Such as approach can also substantially expand the scope of materials available …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Investigations of how past human societies managed during times of major climate change can inform our understanding of potential human responses to ongoing environmental change. In this study, we evaluate the impact of environmental variation on human communities over the last four millennia in the southern Lake Titicaca basin of the Andes, known as Lake Wiñaymarka. Refined paleoenvironmental reconstructions from new diatom-based reconstructions of lake level together with archaeological evidence of animal and plant resource use from sites on the Taraco Peninsula, Bolivia, reveal frequent climate and lake-level changes within major cultural phases. We posit that climate fluctuations alone do …
Application Of The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation To Develop A Management Plan In The Chittagong Hill Tracts Region Of Bangladesh, Nira Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
Land degradation from soil erosion is a major issue in hilly areas of tropical regions such as the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh. The combination of an elevated topography, high-intensity storms that are further exacerbated by the impacts of climate change, and farming practices increase the susceptibility of the region to soil erosion. The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was developed in the mid-latitude dry climate zone of the United States during the 1990s to assist soil conservationists in implementing farming strategies that would address soil loss. Since then, researchers employed remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) …
The Effects Of Heterogeneities And Syn-Deformational Partial Melting On Rock Strength Evolution And Melt Migration, Nicole Wagner
The Effects Of Heterogeneities And Syn-Deformational Partial Melting On Rock Strength Evolution And Melt Migration, Nicole Wagner
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In nature, the segregation of granitic melts at the source may be controlled by fabric and compositional heterogeneities in the source rock, such as foliation and lineation. To investigate the influence of foliation/lineation orientation and composition on rock strength and melt interconnectivity, I performed a series of experiments on cores of a fine-grained gneiss (Gneiss Minuti) and a fine-grained muscovite-bearing quartzite (Moine Thrust quartzite). These rocks were cored at six primary orientations parallel, 45 degrees, and perpendicular to the foliation and lineation and were deformed at a constant temperature of 900°C, pressure of ~2 GPa, and strain rate of ~10-6/s …
Selenium Removal And Pollution Swapping Potentials Of Passive Anaerobic Bioreactors Receiving Coal Slurry Impoundment Wastes, Md Anik Mahmud
Selenium Removal And Pollution Swapping Potentials Of Passive Anaerobic Bioreactors Receiving Coal Slurry Impoundment Wastes, Md Anik Mahmud
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Worldwide, selenium is a major contaminant of concern for coal and metal ore mining industries. In coal mining regions of the eastern USA, for example, billions of liters of wastewaters with elevated Se oxyanion concentrations (primarily SeO42- and SeO32-) are generated during coal washing which is often stored in > 700 man-made impoundments built into remote mountain valleys. Because impoundments are unlined systems, they tend to leak contents into nearby streams, which has detrimental effects on sensitive biota, particularly fish. The primary goal of this project was to evaluate the capacity of passive anaerobic bioreactors (PAB) …
What's In The Pan: An Evaluation Of Fragipan Evolution In Western Kentucky, Hannah Leigh Somerville
What's In The Pan: An Evaluation Of Fragipan Evolution In Western Kentucky, Hannah Leigh Somerville
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
The fragipan is a common diagnostic soil feature that does not follow a clear development path. Fragipans are found commonly throughout the southeastern US and cover 2.7 million acres in Kentucky alone. However prevalent, there is no currently accepted genesis theory for fragipans. In this study, we sought to better understand the formation of fragic features in Kentucky’s soils by evaluating fragipan characteristics across a sequence of pedons featuring varying degrees of fragipan development. We found that [Si/Al]Dithionite, [Si/(Si + Al)]Dithionite and SiDithionite concentration were all higher in well-developed fragipans, suggesting the involvement of an aluminosilicate …

Petrogenesis And Tectonic Implications Of Cordierite-Orthoamphibole Gneisses (Cog) In The Nw Wyoming Province, Brianna K. Crenshaw Ms
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Studying cordierite orthoamphibole gneisses (COG) from five different mountain ranges across the Montana Metasedimentary Terrane (MMT) of the Wyoming Province offers a unique opportunity to elucidate the enigmatic origins and petrogenesis of the lithology in addition to gaining a further understanding of Precambrian crustal assembly processes. Geochemical analyses suggest that COG originates from a basalt that underwent metasomatic alteration, likely via seawater, prior to metamorphism. Moreover, COG is considered to represent oceanic crust that was part of the epicontinental sea adjacent to the Wyoming Province before collision with the Medicine Hat Block. Field observations of associated lithologies such as marbles, …

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Carbonaceous matter, including organic carbon (OC) and black carbon (BC), is an important climate forcing agent and contributes to glacier retreat in the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau (HTP). The HTP – the so-called “Third Pole” – contains the most extensive glacial area outside of the polar regions. Considerable research on carbonaceous matter in the HTP has been conducted, although this research has been challenging due to the complex terrain and strong spatiotemporal heterogeneity of carbonaceous matter in the HTP. A comprehensive investigation of published atmospheric and snow data for HTP carbonaceous matter concentration, deposition and light absorption is presented, …

Answers In The East: An Examination Of China's Renewable Energy And Its Application To Central Appalachia, Lillian Hamm
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
While much of China’s electrification has depended on coal, recent decades illustrate the country is heavily investing in and implementing renewable energy as a power source. Even China’s coal-rich provinces, like the northeastern province of Shanxi, have been making the transition to renewable energy. The central Appalachian states comprised of eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, western Virginia, and northeastern Tennessee share many characteristics with China’s Shanxi province including economic resources, climate, and geography. Yet, central Appalachia has not been able to easily transition to renewable energy. However, there are various cultural, political, and technological differences between the two regions to explain …

Petrology Of An Oxidized Blueschist Cobble From The San Onofre Breccia, California, Usa, Alaina A. Helm
Honors Papers
The mid-Miocene San Onofre Breccia (SOB) found along the southern California borderlands contains clasts of several lithologies including high-pressure metamorphic rocks commonly thought to be shed from the Catalina Schist. Sorensen concluded the San Onofre Schist was part of the Franciscan Complex, although at that time the Catalina subduction was considered to be part of the Franciscan Complex. In this study, a ~10 cm cobble collected from the San Onofre type locality was studied to describe its mineralogy and estimate its conditions of metamorphism. The cobble is composed of glaucophane (35%) + epidote (15%) + garnet (13%) + phengite (12%) …
Influence Of Iceberg-Discharge Events On The Climate And Circulation Of The Central North Atlantic Ocean During The Last Glaciation, Ava Mcilvaine
Influence Of Iceberg-Discharge Events On The Climate And Circulation Of The Central North Atlantic Ocean During The Last Glaciation, Ava Mcilvaine
Scripps Senior Theses
The repeated occurrence of episodic iceberg-discharge events and abrupt climate change in the North Atlantic Ocean is well-documented for the late Quaternary period. However, much of the evidence for these periods known as Heinrich Events comes from the subpolar region, where deposition can be dominated by ice-rafted debris (IRD) and overwhelm other oceanographic and climatic indicators. Thus, the following analysis of coarse sediment from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Core Site U1313 (41°0.0'N, 32°57.42'W) evaluated ocean cooling related to ice-rafting, water mass migration, and climate change over the approximate last 100,000 years. Site U1313 is located near the North Atlantic …
Last Interglacial Climate From Dendostrea Frons Oysters, Verrill Island, Bermuda, Lillian Minnebo
Last Interglacial Climate From Dendostrea Frons Oysters, Verrill Island, Bermuda, Lillian Minnebo
Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts
The Bermuda Islands preserve carbonates recording many past changes in sea level, including multiple warm and cool geologic intervals. Several localities expose shell-rich deposits from the Last Interglacial (~125,000 years ago), a time broadly similar to climate today that can potentially serve as an analog for future conditions. Here, we use δ18O analyses of fossil mollusks to estimate past temperatures and seasonality and compare our data with those from other species.
Eight Dendostrea frons oysters were sampled along their growth axes to reconstruct seasonal temperature curves. We report a mean δ18O value of -0.51 ± 0.17‰, corresponding to a temperature …
A Regional Synthesis Of Post-Glacial Fire History In The Eastern Cascades, Washington, Using Macroscopic Charcoal Analysis, Brynn Harrison
A Regional Synthesis Of Post-Glacial Fire History In The Eastern Cascades, Washington, Using Macroscopic Charcoal Analysis, Brynn Harrison
All Master's Theses
The recent rise in severe wildfires in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) has created a heightened sense of urgency and reignited public interest in wildfire risk. In order to put this rise into a broader spatial and temporal context, a more in-depth look at fire histories from frequently burned areas in the eastern Cascades is needed. The first major objective of this study was to determine if CharAnalysis, a statistical program developed to reconstruct fire history from macroscopic charcoal-based records, is appropriate for use with charcoal records from the eastern Cascades of Washington. The second major objective was to develop a …

Geologic Mapping Along The Benton Spring Fault, Nevada: Dextrally-Offset Tuff-Filled Paleovalleys In The Central Walker Lane, Peter Dubyoski
All Master's Theses
Documenting the spatiotemporal evolution of fault systems along the western margin of North America is a prerequisite for characterizing the forces which drive faulting across the U.S. Cordillera. Within the Cordillera, the Walker Lane, characterized by active intracontinental faults, straddles the western edge of the Basin and Range Province and the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada. In the Gabbs Valley Range, central Nevada, eastern Central Walker Lane, I combine new mapping, geochronology, and structural studies to document the geometry and timing of dextral fault slip along the Benton Spring fault, an active intracontinental fault. The Benton Spring fault is …
Long-Term Geomorphic Effects Of The Glines Canyon Dam Removal On The Elwha River, Washington, Usa, Alyssa D. Demott
Long-Term Geomorphic Effects Of The Glines Canyon Dam Removal On The Elwha River, Washington, Usa, Alyssa D. Demott
All Master's Theses
The Elwha River once provided vital habitat for a variety of salmonid species, but after two dams were emplaced on the river in the early 1900s, habitat diminished, and salmon populations declined. From 2011-2014, the dams were finally removed to restore the Elwha ecosystem. To understand the long-term geomorphic impacts of the Glines Canyon Dam removal on the Elwha River, I quantified changes in four parameters: in-channel large wood, main channel sinuosity, channel braiding, and sedimentation. High-resolution imagery from 2012-2020 was used to map large wood and digitize main and secondary river channels, and field surveys were completed at study …
Organic-Input Impacts On Soil Carbon Flux, Storage, And Budget In Conservation Agricultural Soils, Central Washington, Usa, Jessica Hartman
Organic-Input Impacts On Soil Carbon Flux, Storage, And Budget In Conservation Agricultural Soils, Central Washington, Usa, Jessica Hartman
All Master's Theses
The increase in global atmospheric CO2 over the last 200 years has generated an urgent need for strategies for sequestering carbon (C). Soil C, which has been depleted by land use change and agricultural practices, is a prime target for C storage. Land management practices, including no-till, cover cropping and crop rotation, and the application of C amendments such as compost and biochar, are suggested to increase C in the soil. Spoon Full Farm, near Thorp, WA, was a conventional hay farm until 2016, when management practices changed to implement some of these C sequestration strategies. A prior CWU …

Late Pleistocene-Holocene Characteristics Of The North Anatolian Fault At Adapazarı Basin: Evidence From The Age And Geometry Of The Fluvial Terrace Staircases, Mehmet Korhan Erturaç
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Late Pleistocene-Holocene evolution of the Adapazarı Basin was investigated using the stratigraphy, geometry, and absoluteluminescence dating of the 4-step fluvial terrace staircases of the Sakarya River. The results revealed that the fluvial cycle was primarily related to relative sea level changes of the Black Sea. The initiation of deposition and the abandonment ages of the terraces indicated relative high stands during marine isotope stage (MIS) 5a (~84-72 ka), 3 (40-30 ka), and 1 (9 ka-recent). The erosional periods in between the terrace steps reflected the response of the Sakarya River to the significantly low stands of the sea. The …

Formation Age, Geochemical Characteristics And Petrogenesis Of Syenogranite In Chaihe Area, Central Daxingan Mountains: Constraints On Late Carboniferous Evolution Of The Xing'an And Songnen Blocks, Dongxue Li, Changqing Zheng, Chenyue Liang, Xiao Zhou
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The tectonic evolutionary history between the Xing'an Block (XB) and Songnen Block (SB) in the eastern Central Asia Orogenic Belt (CAOB) has been hotly debated. In this study, we present a series of new data to provide a better constraint on the magmatic process during plate subduction and its implications for the regional tectonic evolution of XB and SB, even the CAOB. The whole-rock geochemistry and zircon U-Pb chronology of syenogranite in the Chaihe area of the Great Xing'an Range have been carried out. The dating results show that the syenogranite was formed in the Late Carboniferous during the 303.1-316.1 …

A Holocene Paleomagnetic Record From Küçükçekmece Lagoon, Nw Turkey, Özlem Makaroğlu
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Lake sediments are very useful for providing high-resolution records of geomagnetic field variations, especially for the Holocene period. We present high-resolution paleomagnetic records from three cores (KCL12P1, P2, and P3) recovered from Küçükçekmece Lagoon, located at the northern shoreline of the Sea of Marmara, Turkey. The cores were subjected to a comprehensive paleomagnetic and rock magnetic investigation using oriented samples. According to the age-depth model, based on radiocarbon dating and X-ray fluorescence-derived Ca/Ti element ratios, tuned to available oxygen isotope records based on an absolute calendar-year time-scale, we obtained a new paleomagnetic record for the last 3800 years. Low paleointensities …

On October 30, 2020, a strong earthquake (Mw6.6-7.0) occurred offshore, just north of Samos Island, causing life losses, injuries and damages, especially on the Turkish side. The broader area is characterized by a complex geodynamic setting with both rich seismic history and numerous active faults of different direction and kinematics. The first aim of this study is to define the seismic source of the mainshock, based on seismological and geodetic data (GPS measurements and originally processed GNSS records), as well as our field observations on Samos Island few days after the mainshock. The integration of this information leads to a …
Socioeconomic Challenges Of California Strawberry Production And Disease Resistant Cultivars, Julie Guthman, Estelí Jiménez-Soto
Socioeconomic Challenges Of California Strawberry Production And Disease Resistant Cultivars, Julie Guthman, Estelí Jiménez-Soto
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Strawberries are the 4th highest grossing crop in California and supply 90% of US strawberries. But the industry's long reliance on the use of chemical fumigants to control soil disease, nematodes and weeds is being threatened by increased regulation of these fumigants, leading to urgent efforts to develop and test non-chemical alternatives to fumigation, such as disease resistant cultivars. Many of these technologies are promising ecologically, but making them economically viable for growers is more challenging, especially in light of the socioeconomic context of strawberry production in California that has created a state of lock-in for a sustainability transition. This …
Soil Response Of Helicopter Liming In The Monongahela National Forest, Jarrett Douglas Fowler
Soil Response Of Helicopter Liming In The Monongahela National Forest, Jarrett Douglas Fowler
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Soils in the Monongahela National Forest (MNF) are acidic due to sandstone parent material, acid deposition, uptake of base cations by vegetation, and release of organic acids by organic matter (OM) decomposition. Increases in soil acidity have caused declines in forest health and changed species composition and nutrient status. Liming can neutralize soil acidity, but no large-scale liming projects have been done on acid forest soils in the USA. In anticipation of acquiring funding for a proposed liming project in the MNF, in 2007 and 2009 10 sites were selected to sample and analyze soils before lime was applied. In …
