Ultralow Velocities Of Caco3 And The Origin Of Seismic Anomalies In The Earth's Upper Mantle, Mingqiang Hou, Ming Hao, Jin Liu, Xiaowan Su, Wen-Yi Zhou, Jin S. Zhang, Rostislav Hrubiak

Earth and Planetary Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a major mineral host for CO2 in deep Earth. The physical and chemical properties of CaCO3 at extreme pressure-temperature (P-T) conditions are important for understanding the CO2 circulation between the Earth's surface and interior primarily via volcanism and subduction. Using the pulse-echo-overlap method combined with Paris-Edinburgh (PE) press, we measured velocities of CaCO3 under upper mantle conditions and observed an anomalous velocity drop associated with the amorphization of aragonite. The compressional (VP) and shear (VS) wave velocities of the partially amorphized CaCO …

Evaluating Canola Genotypes For Growth And Yield Under Different Environmental Conditions In South Dakota, Unius Arinaitwe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Canola (Brassica napus L) and carinata (Brassica carinata A. Braun) are potential oilseed crops for diversifying cropping systems and expanding into marginal lands impacted by saline and sodic soils in South Dakota (SD). However, genotypes that are high yielding, with high agronomic adaptability and stability over diverse environments, and salt tolerant have not been selected. One field experiment was conducted at two environments (Brookings - eastern SD and Pierre - western SD) from 2019 to 2020 to evaluate genotypes for growth and yield stability. Three greenhouse experiments were conducted to evaluate genotypes for salt tolerance in …

The Role Of Infrequently Mobile Boulders In Modulating Landscape Evolution And Geomorphic Hazards, Charles M. Shobe, Jens M. Turowski, Ron Nativ, Rachel C. Glade, Georgina L. Bennett, Benedetta Dini Jan 2021

The Role Of Infrequently Mobile Boulders In Modulating Landscape Evolution And Geomorphic Hazards, Charles M. Shobe, Jens M. Turowski, Ron Nativ, Rachel C. Glade, Georgina L. Bennett, Benedetta Dini

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A landscape’s sediment grain size distribution is the product of, and an important influence on, earth surface processes and landscape evolution. Grains can be large enough that the motion of a single grain, infrequently mobile in size-selective transport systems, constitutes or triggers significant geomorphic change. We define these grains as boulders. Boulders affect landscape evolution; their dynamics and effects on landscape form have been the focus of substantial recent community effort. We review progress on five key questions related to how boulders influence the evolution of unglaciated, eroding landscapes: 1) What factors control boulder production on eroding hillslopes and the …

Influence Of Mechanical Layering And Natural Fractures On Undercutting And Rapid Headward Erosion (Recession) At Canyon Lake Spillway, Texas, U.S.A, Nathaniel S. Ledbetter Ferrill, David A. Ferrill

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Faculty Research

This study investigates the role of mechanical layering and fractures on flood-related erosional undercutting and resulting rapid spillway recession. In the summer of 2002, 86 cm of rain fell in an 8-day period across the Guadalupe River drainage basin in central Texas, causing Canyon Lake reservoir to completely fill and overtop the emergency spillway for the first time. The resulting flood incised a gorge into the mechanically layered Glen Rose Formation and caused headward erosion (recession) at the downstream edge of the emergency spillway. Comparison of pre- and post-flood imagery and assessment of flood records indicates that maximum recession localized …

Landslide Site Assessment And Characterization Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Batmyagmar Dashbold Jan 2021

Landslide Site Assessment And Characterization Using Remote Sensing Techniques, Batmyagmar Dashbold

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Landslides are common and dangerous natural hazards that occur worldwide, often causing severe direct impacts on human lives, public and private properties. It is imperative to identify the landslide susceptible areas to avoid or mitigate the possible damage. Landslide prediction can be presented in a slope failure in spatial and/ or temporal terms. If it is presented in spatial term, it is considered a landslide susceptibility map (LSM) defined as the probability of spatial occurrence of slope failures. If it is presented in a combination of spatial and temporal distribution of the landslide susceptibility, it is commonly referred to as …

Analyzing Slab Holes In Subduction Zones And Their Impacts Through Numerical Simulations, Taylor M. Arrowood Jan 2021

Analyzing Slab Holes In Subduction Zones And Their Impacts Through Numerical Simulations, Taylor M. Arrowood

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

Subduction zones form as higher density oceanic lithosphere is forced beneath an over-riding, lower density, continental or oceanic plate; a process driven by contrasts in buoyancy throughout this system. We seek to explore subduction zones in which the subducting lithosphere is discontinuous after passing through the trench, forming a slab gap. The main research objective is to determine the effect of slab gaps on surface topography in a subduction-related orogen and asthenospheric flow into the mantle wedge using two and three-dimensional numerical mechanical models. We obtain results from 24+ models that suggest a connection between slab gaps/holes and the magnitude …

Admittance Modeling For Elastic Thickness Across The Mars Crustal Dichotomy Boundary, Aspen Davis Jan 2021

Admittance Modeling For Elastic Thickness Across The Mars Crustal Dichotomy Boundary, Aspen Davis

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

We use a Bouguer mass-sheet approximation for spectral admittance and correlation modeling to estimate elastic thickness, crustal thickness, crustal density, and load density across the Mars crustal dichotomy boundary near the landing site of NASA’s InSight Lander. We derive and constrain the parameter ranges using RMS misfit between the observed and theoretical admittance and their error bars. Spherical cap windows of 15° (900 km) radius are used to study 15 locations in the Northern Lowlands, the Southern Highlands and near and on the boundary which suggest distinct, but not sharp, difference in lithospheric properties. Elastic thickness estimates range generally between …

Timing Of Regional Metamorphism In The Inner Piedmont And Blue Ridge Of North Carolina: Evidence From Monazite U-Pb Geochronology, Nicholas Edwin Powell Jan 2021

Timing Of Regional Metamorphism In The Inner Piedmont And Blue Ridge Of North Carolina: Evidence From Monazite U-Pb Geochronology, Nicholas Edwin Powell

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

Channel and escape flow, or lower crustal ductile flow and redirection from orogen-normal to orogen-parallel flow, are among the most impactful concepts introduced to explain shortening accommodation in large, hot orogens. In the Inner Piedmont (IP), southern Appalachians, channel and escape flow were proposed to have occurred during the Neo-Acadian (376–340 Ma) orogeny. However, the polymetamorphic history of the southern Appalachians makes it difficult to isolate thermal and deformational events for process-focused studies necessary to test these ideas in the IP. To address this, we used in situ laser ablation split stream (LASS) monazite U-Pb geochronology alongside new garnet chemical …

Integrated Geophysical Investigation Of Near-Surface Faults - Sassafras Ridge, New Madrid Seismic Zone, Usa, Cooper Cearley Jan 2021

Integrated Geophysical Investigation Of Near-Surface Faults - Sassafras Ridge, New Madrid Seismic Zone, Usa, Cooper Cearley

Theses and Dissertations--Earth and Environmental Sciences

The New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) is a large source of seismic hazard within the central and eastern United States. Seismogenic source parameters such as active fault location, slip rate, total displacement, and strain accommodation is poorly constrained due to the masking effect of the Mississippi Embayment sediment and agricultural practices on structures and surface expressions. Consequently, noninvasive geologic and geophysical investigation of the subsurface is needed to characterize seismogenic sources. Recent investigation of the Reelfoot Fault found that there is a strain accommodation enigma between the dextral offset at seismogenic depth versus the surface expression, Reelfoot Scarp. This strain …

The Kiwanis Site: A Multi-Method Geophysical Approach To Investigating Mound Features, Luke Burds Jan 2021

The Kiwanis Site: A Multi-Method Geophysical Approach To Investigating Mound Features, Luke Burds

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Subtle mound-like landforms can be genetically ambiguous features within a landscape. A variety of geomorphological and anthropological processes can result in these equifinal forms being difficult to interpret. Being able to reliably and noninvasively differentiate them is important for legal as well as cultural and spiritual reasons. A suite of non-invasive geophysical methods were thus used on mounds at the Kiwanis site in western Wisconsin in order to determine if culturally diagnostic indicators could be recorded in geophysical data. Genesis of these mounds is ambiguous given the presence of aeolian landforms in immediate proximity. As a control, the same geophysical …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The southern part of the Western Anatolia Extensional Province is governed by E-W-trending horst-graben systems and NW-SE-oriented active faults. The NW-striking Yatağan Fault is characterised by an almost pure normal sense of motion with a minor dextral strike slip component. Although the settlements within the area have been affected by several earthquake events since ancient times (~2000 BCE), the earthquake potential and history of the Yatağan Fault has remained unknown until a few years ago. Considering the growing dense population within the area, paleoseismology studies were conducted in order to illuminate the historical earthquake activity on the Yatağan Fault. Two …

We have investigated the time-dependent seismicity model of the earthquake occurrence on a regional basis through the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ). To that end, the studied region has been subdivided into 7 seismogenic zones considering the seismotectonic criteria, and then regional time and magnitude predictable (RTIMAP) model has been performed. Intervened times and magnitudes of main shocks produced in each zone have predictive properties defined by the RTIMAP. The probabilities of the next main shocks in 5 decades and the magnitudes of the next events have been estimated using the formation time and magnitude of the past events in …

Alaşehir Type - Rolling Hinge Mechanism In The Northern Margin Of Büyük Menderes Graben: Evidence From Seismic Reflection And Recent Thermochronological Data, Fevzi̇ Mert Türesi̇n, Gürol Seyi̇toğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Isotopic and thermochronological data were recently obtained from the footwall of the Büyük Menderes detachment ranges from 29.0 ± 1.9 Ma (ZFT) to 1.6 ± 0.2 Ma (Ap U - Th / He), and they can be grouped in three different time intervals. These results are well explained by the Alaşehir type-rolling hinge mechanism, which suggests active rotated initial normal fault during successive normal fault development of the graben formation. This paper suggests that the Alaşehir type-rolling hinge mechanism is applicable to the Büyük Menderes graben by using field observations, published isotopic / thermochronological and subsurface data. It also contributes …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Understanding the tectonic mechanism generated by the earthquakes and faults is possible only if the preseismic, coseismic and postseismic crustal deformation related to the earthquakes is determined properly. By the analysis of continuous GPS (CGPS) coordinate time series, it is possible to estimate the crustal deformation. Besides, accelerometer records at strong motion stations (SMSs) may support the CGPS-based estimates. In this study, CGPS coordinate time series were analyzed in comparison with the accelerometer records for clarifying the coseismic deformation caused by the earthquake occurred in the surrounding of Lesvos fault located in the northern part of Karaburun within the active …

Structural Characteristics Of Transtensional Fault System And Its Implication Forhydrocarbon Accumulation In S Block, South Asia Area, Yuwen Dong, Iftikhar Satti, Maman Hermana, Xu Chen

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Transtensional faults are well developed in the S Block of the South Asia area, which have an important impact on the hydrocarbon accumulation. However, the transtensional fault structure is very complex. Based on drilling and seismic data interpretation results, faults are divided into three typical types in the Lower Cretaceous, which can help to understand the complex fault system. The main faults are distributed in the NNW-SSE direction and parallel arrangement with dextral strike-slip shear characteristics, which determines the development of the tectonic belt. The secondary faults are often associated with the main faults, often composed of multiple branch faults. …

Quantifying The Bathymetric Stripping Gravity Corrections Of Global Seawater And Majorlakes Over Turkey, Mehmet Si̇mav, Hasan Yildiz Jan 2021

Quantifying The Bathymetric Stripping Gravity Corrections Of Global Seawater And Majorlakes Over Turkey, Mehmet Si̇mav, Hasan Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Gravity data inversion or interpretation requires the removal of the gravitational effects of the a priori known geologic and/or morphologic features within the Earth?s system to model and reveal the remaining signals of the unknown anomalous subsurface density distributions. The Bouguer gravity anomalies reduced by the normal gravitational field of the Earth and the gravitational attraction of the topographic masses above the sea level are frequently used in geophysics for this purpose. However, density contrast effects of the other major known elements, such as offshore seawater, inland water bodies, glaciers, and/or sediments can be removed from the Bouguer gravity anomalies, …
