Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Landfilling is the dominant municipal solid waste (MSW) management option in the United States and many other countries. Leachate management and treatment represent an essential component in sustainable management of landfills. However, leachate organic matter (LOM) present in landfill leachate challenges existing treatment practices. The long-term goal of this study is to develop innovative treatment technologies for mitigation of LOM impacts for supporting sustainability in waste management and wastewater treatment. The overall objective of this thesis research aimed to investigate technical performance of the joint use of advanced oxidation process (AOP) and advanced reduction process (ARP) for treatment of mature …
Paleoenvironment Reconstruction Of The Eocene Southeastern Tethys Using Geochemistry Of Sedimentary Rocks, Liliana CalderóN Convers
Paleoenvironment Reconstruction Of The Eocene Southeastern Tethys Using Geochemistry Of Sedimentary Rocks, Liliana CalderóN Convers
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The Early Eocene hyperthermals are a series of transient global warming events that occurred between 54.09 and 52.63 Ma, and are considered as ancient analogues for future climate change. These hyperthermal events are well studied in the deep sea sites, but have not been investigated in the eastern Tethys Ocean. Here, we report new major and trace element geochemistry and stable carbon isotope data of the Early Eocene strata deposited in a shallow marine foreland basin prior to the main stage of India-Asian continent collision at Qumiba section in the Tingri County, southern Tibet. These geochemical data are used to …
Modeling The Evolution Of A Coupled Barrier-Marsh-Lagoon System : Insights From The New Jersey Coastline, Christopher Tenebruso
Modeling The Evolution Of A Coupled Barrier-Marsh-Lagoon System : Insights From The New Jersey Coastline, Christopher Tenebruso
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Barriers and their associated backbarrier environments protect populated centers and infrastructure from storm impacts, support biodiversity, and provide a number of ecosystem services. Despite their socio-economic and ecological importance, the response of coupled barrier-backbarrier environments to sea-level rise is yet poorly understood. Undeveloped barrier-backbarrier systems typically respond to sea level rise through the process of landward migration, driven by storm overwash, tidal fluxes, and inland marsh upland expansion. Such response, however, can be largely affected by development and engineering activities such as dredging and shoreline stabilization techniques (e.g., seawalls, groins, beach replenishment). To better understand the difference in the response …

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
IODP 347 Site M0065 was drilled to assess the last deglaciation of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS) within the southern Baltic Sea Basin (BSB) from ~20 ka BP. Site M0065 was drilled in the Baltic Sea within the Bornholm Basin in a water depth of 87m. It provided the opportunity to study the development of the Baltic Ice Lake (BIL), which occupied the southern BSB between ~17 and 11 ka. Previous studies in this area looking at glacial till and surface exposure dates have dated the deglaciation of Bornholm Island, and consequently Site M0065, at ~16.3 ka BP. A visual …
Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction Of Quaternary Saltville, Virginia, Using Ostracode Autecology, Austin Gause
Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction Of Quaternary Saltville, Virginia, Using Ostracode Autecology, Austin Gause
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Saltville valley in southwestern Virginia is home to Quaternary localities containing paleontological and archaeological remains. Historically the valley has been mined for salt and the small lakes, ponds and springs along the valley floor have a brackish signature. A preliminary report on the site’s ostracode fauna suggested that the site’s water was not always saline. This study analyzed modern and Quaternary ostracodes to understand the valley’s hydrologic and chemical evolution. Sediments contained primarily freshwater species, including the environmentally sensitive Candona crogmaniana. The presence of Pelocypris tuberculatum and a new Fabaeformiscandona species throughout a vertical section spanning the latest Pleistocene …

Utilizing The Public On Public Lands: The Application Of Community Science To Monitor And Model Erosion In National Forests, Jacob L. Hansen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unpaved forest roads are adversely affecting coldwater streams through excessive erosion and the subsequent sedimentation of adjacent waterways. To help identify areas of concern, Trout Unlimited (TU) in the Southern Appalachian region developed a Community Science initiative to gather data on sediment sources and stream-road crossings. Volunteers were recruited and trained to monitor road and trail conditions and collect and submit data using a Survey123 application on their cell phones. Analysis of the contributed data reveals statistical connections between drainage type and both erosion level and stream sedimentation. The contributed data were also included as a calibration for the lite …

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Understanding the factors that influence evacuation decision-making among local residents is of critical importance to those involved in monitoring and managing weather-related hazards. This study examined both geophysical and social variables that we believe influenced individual decision-making on whether to stay home, seek out a public shelter, or leave the area entirely during Hurricane Irma. A 23-item survey was administered to a convenience sample of adults (n = 234) who resided within a coastal Florida county that received an evacuation warning during Hurricane Irma in 2017. Results suggested sources of information relied on through media, government, family, and social networks …

Nitrate Dynamics And Source Within Nested Watersheds Of An Agricultural Stream, Nebraska, Usa, Galen Richards
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Nitrate concentrations have been increasing throughout the globe, primarily due to heightened agricultural activity. Nitrate concentrations in Bazile Creek, located in Northeastern Nebraska, have been steadily rising since the early 2000s. Groundwater nitrate concentrations within the Bazile Creek watershed are high (> 10 mg/L nitrate-N), and there is strong connectivity between groundwater and surface water systems. This study aimed to better understand temporal nitrate concentration variability within the watershed through sampling tributaries and the main channel during baseflow conditions. Nitrate source was also investigated though the use of dual δ15N and δ18O nitrate isotopes, with samples …
Use Of Citizen Science In Monitoring Groundwater Quality: A Case Study From Nebraska, Christopher Olson
Use Of Citizen Science In Monitoring Groundwater Quality: A Case Study From Nebraska, Christopher Olson
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Citizen science has a key role in modernizing effective communication between professional scientists and the general public. However, citizen science differs to that of professional science due to equipment and experience and is a topic argued against citizen science. However, technology in water quality testing has developed in simplicity and affordability to a point where high school students, with hands-on training, can collect groundwater samples and test for quality themselves. Nebraska groundwater quality is a critical part of the state and can utilize high school students as citizen scientists for their communities. High school students from rural communities across Nebraska …
Statistical Downscaling Techniques To Enhance The Spatial Resolution Of The Grace Satellite Data And To Fill Temporal Gaps, Hossein Sahour
Statistical Downscaling Techniques To Enhance The Spatial Resolution Of The Grace Satellite Data And To Fill Temporal Gaps, Hossein Sahour
Dissertations
The Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) has been successfully used to monitor variations in terrestrial water storage (GRACETWS ) and groundwater storage (GRACEGWS) across the globe, yet such applications are hindered on local scales by the limited spatial resolution of GRACE data. Using the Lower Peninsula of Michigan as a test site, I developed optimum procedures to downscale GRACE Release-06 monthly mascon solutions. A four-fold exercise is conducted. Cluster analysis is performed to identify the optimum number and distribution of clusters (areas) of contiguous pixels of similar geophysical signals (GRACETWS time series); three clusters are …
Geochemical Variability & Implications For Magma Transport At 14°N On The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Emma Elizabeth Mccully
Geochemical Variability & Implications For Magma Transport At 14°N On The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Emma Elizabeth Mccully
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Observations of seafloor bathymetry and gravity surveys indicate that magma focuses in the center of slow spreading Mid-Ocean Ridge (MOR) segments, however; it is not well constrained how magma is generated, stored, and transported to the segment ends. There are two end-member models for magma transport: 1) a focused magma model wherein the magma upwells beneath the entire ridge axis, is focused and pools beneath the center of the segment, and is then transported towards the segment ends via lateral diking in the shallow crust and 2) a distributed magma model wherein magma vertically upwells and is erupted on the …
Assessment Of Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) Surveys In Dryland Ecosystems: Estimates Of Fractional Photosynthetic Cover And Plant Functional Types, Anna V. Roser
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Drylands cover 41% of the global land surface and provide ecosystem services to 38% of the world’s population. Dryland ecosystems have already been degraded or threatened by the increased rates of wildfire and invasive annual grasses, as well as changes in precipitation patterns. We cannot protect, mitigate, or restore drylands without comprehensive vegetation surveys. To understand ecosystem processes, we need to know the composition of vegetation at the patch and plant scales. Field observations are limited in coverage, and are expensive and time intensive. Data from Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) will fill the niche between field data and medium scale …
A Sense Of Scale: Mapping Exotic Annual Grasses With Satellite Imagery Across A Landscape And Quantifying Their Biomass At A Plot Level With Structure-From-Motion In A Semi-Arid Ecosystem, Monica Vermillion
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The native vegetation communities in the sagebrush steppe, a semi-arid ecosystem type, are under threat from exotic annual grasses. Exotic annual grasses increase fire severity and frequency, decrease biodiversity, and reduce soil carbon storage amongst other ecosystem services. The invasion of exotic annual grasses is causing detrimental impacts to land use by eliminating forage for livestock and creating a huge economic cost from fire control and post-fire restoration. To combat invasion, land managers need to know what exotic annual grasses are present, where they are invading, and estimates of their biomass. Mapping exotic annual grasses is challenging because many areas …
Applications Of Continuous Snowpack Temperature Monitoring, Peter J. Youngblood
Applications Of Continuous Snowpack Temperature Monitoring, Peter J. Youngblood
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Predicting metamorphism within seasonal snowpacks is critical for avalanche forecasting and runoff timing as it relates to water supply management. Snowpack temperature gradients play a key role in snow metamorphism, and their magnitude controls how snow strength changes; therefore, they are of interest to avalanche forecasters. Before major melt, the snowpack must warm to isothermal conditions at 0°C. Measuring this transition from warming to the ripening phase could help improve our current models for runoff timing. Measuring snowpack temperature gradients is currently a non-automated process that requires disturbance of the snow profile, and only gives a snapshot in time of …
Automated Terminus Detection For Greenland's Peripheral Marine-Terminating Glaciers, Julia Liu
Automated Terminus Detection For Greenland's Peripheral Marine-Terminating Glaciers, Julia Liu
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Changes in the length of marine-terminating glaciers strongly influence the mass balance of glaciers, ice caps, and ice sheets. Currently, quantification of glacier length change through measurement of terminus position relies on time-consuming and subjective manual mapping techniques, limiting our ability to understand the dynamics controlling glacier terminus changes. I developed an automated method of mapping glacier terminus positions in satellite imagery using observations from a representative sample of Greenlands peripheral glaciers. The method is adapted from the 2D Wavelet Transform Modulus Maxima (WTMM) segmentation method, which has been used previously for image segmentation in biomedical and other applied science …
A 30-Year Agroclimatic Analysis Of The Snake River Valley American Viticultural Area - Descriptive And Predictive Methods, Charles L. Becker
A 30-Year Agroclimatic Analysis Of The Snake River Valley American Viticultural Area - Descriptive And Predictive Methods, Charles L. Becker
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Climate change poses serious threats to global agriculture, however some localities and crops may benefit from increasing temperatures. Grape production in southern Idaho may be a beneficial example as vineyard acreage has increased over 300% since the designation of the Snake River American Viticultural Area (SRVAVA) in 2007. We perform a statistical characterization of agroclimate within the SRVAVA that centers around four primary objectives: utilization of a novel, 30-year high resolution climate dataset to provide insight and agrometrics unavailable at coarser resolutions, climatic implications of the unique topography within the SRVAVA, identification of statistical trends, and correlation of SRVAVA climate …
Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning To Characterize Peatland Microtopography And Assess Tree Growth Responses To Elevated Temperature And Co2, Jake D. Graham
Using Terrestrial Laser Scanning To Characterize Peatland Microtopography And Assess Tree Growth Responses To Elevated Temperature And Co2, Jake D. Graham
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Northern peatlands are a major terrestrial carbon (C) store, with an annual sink of 0.1 Pg C yr-1 and a total storage estimate of 547 Pg C. Northern peatlands are also major contributors of atmospheric methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The microtopography of peatlands helps modulate peatland carbon fluxes; however, there is a lack of quantitative characterizations of microtopography in the literature. The lack of formalized schemes to characterize microtopography makes comparisons between studies difficult. Further, many land surface models do not accurately simulate peatland C emissions, in part because they do not adequately represent peatland microtopography and hydrology. …

Stream Bank And Bar Erosion Contributions And Land Use Influence On Suspended Sediment Loads In Two Ozark Watersheds, Southeast Missouri, Kayla Ann Coonen
Stream Bank And Bar Erosion Contributions And Land Use Influence On Suspended Sediment Loads In Two Ozark Watersheds, Southeast Missouri, Kayla Ann Coonen
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
In-channel sources and storages of fine-sediment such as in banks and bars can influence sediment loads and overall geomorphic activity in stream systems. However, in-channel processes and effects on sediment load are rarely quantified in geomorphic or water quality studies. This study uses a sediment budget approach to assess the influence of bank erosion and bar deposition on fine sediment loads in Mineral Fork (491 km2) and Mill Creek (133 km2) watersheds located in the Ozark Highlands in Washington County, Missouri. These watersheds were disturbed by historical lead and barite mining which included the construction of …
Evaluation Of Groundwater Sodium And Sodium Uptake In Taxodium And Its Hybrids On Galveston Island, Texas, Daniel Morgan
Evaluation Of Groundwater Sodium And Sodium Uptake In Taxodium And Its Hybrids On Galveston Island, Texas, Daniel Morgan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In September 2008, Hurricane Ike swept through the Gulf of Mexico striking the Gulf Coast, claiming hundreds of lives and causing billions of dollars in damage. The hurricane left behind elevated sea salt concentrations in the soil and groundwater, preventing the unaided return of live oaks and other species to the island. To determine effective ways to ameliorate the elevated Na+ concentrations in the soil, eight treatments were applied to the soil and combinations of three species of plants, live oak (Quercus virginiana), hybrid bald cypress (Taxodium ‘T406’), and yellow hibiscus (Hibiscus hamabo …
Volcanic Record Of The Arc-To-Rift Transition Onshore Of The Guaymas Basin In The Santa Rosalía Area, Gulf Of California, Baja California, Graham Dm Andrews
Volcanic Record Of The Arc-To-Rift Transition Onshore Of The Guaymas Basin In The Santa Rosalía Area, Gulf Of California, Baja California, Graham Dm Andrews
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The Gulf of California is an archetype of continental rupture through transtensional rifting, and exploitation of a thermally weakened arc to produce a rift. Volcanic rocks of central Baja California record the transition from calcalkaline arc magmatism, due to subduction of the Farallon plate (ca. 24–12 Ma), to rift magmatism, related to the opening of the Gulf of California (<12 Ma). In addition, a suite of postsubduction rocks (<12 Ma), referred to as “bajaites,” are enriched in light rare-earth and other incompatible elements (e.g., Ba and Sr). These are further subdivided into high-magnesian andesite (with 50%–58% SiO2 and MgO >4%) and adakite (>56% SiO2 and MgO <3%). The bajaites correlate spatially with a fossil slab imaged under central Baja and are inferred to record postsubduction melting of the slab and subduction-modified mantle by asthenospheric upwelling associated with rifting or slab breakoff. We report on volcanic rocks of all three suites, which surround and underlie the Santa Rosalía sedimentary rift basin. This area represents the western margin of the Guaymas basin, the most magmatically robust segment of the Gulf of California rift, where seafloor spreading occurred in isolation for 3–4 m.y. (starting at 6 Ma) before transtensional pull-apart basins to the north and south ruptured the continental crust. Outcrops of the Santa Rosalía area thus offer the opportunity to understand the magmatic evolution of the Guaymas rift, which has been the focus of numerous oceanographic expeditions.
We describe 21 distinct volcanic and hypabyssal map units in the Santa Rosalía area, using field characteristics, petrographic data, and major- and trace-element geochemical data, as well as zircon isotopic data and …
3%).>12>Predicting Patterns Of Heavy Metal Contamination In Rio Grande Valley Agricultural Soils, Joy Z. Youwakim
Predicting Patterns Of Heavy Metal Contamination In Rio Grande Valley Agricultural Soils, Joy Z. Youwakim
Theses and Dissertations
The Rio Grande Valley of Texas is the statewide leader in the production of produce and grains and is irrigated by the Rio Grande River, in which heavy metal contaminants have been documented by both the International Boundary Water Commission and the United States Geological Survey. This work attempts to observe and document patterns of heavy metal pooling in order to mitigate the increased risk of contamination due to urbanization. We hypothesize that relationships exist between heavy metal content and proximity to roads, land use, and soil type. This research tests these relationships through soil sampling and atomic absorption spectrometry …

This project demonstrates two applications of remote sensing in agricultural and rangeland environments. In the first, an unmanned aerial system (UAS) equipped with a multi-spectral sensor was used to estimate canopy cover across four different cover crop trials at four time periods. In the second, a local database of stationary camera trap images of wildlife was used to train a convolutional neural network to automatically catalogue images by identifying the animal in those images. Both projects aimed to provide an example of how remote sensing platforms and machine learning techniques can facilitate the rapid collection and processing of large-scale field …
Structural Characterization Of Organic Matter In Oil Shales Using Multiple Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Techniques, Wenying Chu
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Oil shale is a promising source of hydrocarbon fuel that is distributed throughout the world. The petroleum generating potential of oil shale is related to the molecular structure of the organic matter in source rock. The major fraction of organic matter of oil shale is termed kerogen, and due to its insolubility in organic solvents, 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the best ways to directly measure the insoluble organic matter without changing its chemical structures. This dissertation investigated oil shale samples using advanced solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy techniques and high resolution magic angle …
