The 28 September 2018 magnitude Mw7.8 Palu, Indonesia earthquake (0.178° S, 119.840° E, depth 13 km) occurred at 10:02 UTC. The major earthquake triggered catastrophic liquefaction, landslides, and a near-field tsunami. The ionospheric total electron content (TEC) derived from records of 5 ground-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers is employed to detect tsunami traveling ionospheric disturbances (TTIDs). In total, 15 TTIDs have been detected. The ray-tracing and beamforming techniques are then used to find the TTID source location. The bootstrap method is applied in order to further explore the possible location of the tsunami source based on results of …

Using Climate To Explain And Predict West Nile Virus Risk In Nebraska, Kelly Helm Smith, Andrew J. Tyre, Jeff Hamik, Michael J. Hayes, Yuzhen Zhou, Li Dai

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

We used monthly precipitation and temperature data to give early warning of years with higher West Nile Virus (WNV) risk in Nebraska. We used generalized additive models with a negative binomial distribution and smoothing curves to identify combinations of extremes and timing that had the most influence, experimenting with all combinations of temperature and drought data, lagged by 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months. We fit models on data from 2002 through 2011, used Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) to select the best‐fitting model, and used 2012 as out‐of‐sample data for prediction, and repeated this process for each successive year, …

Imidacloprid Movement Into Fungal Conidia Is Lethal To Mycophagous Beetles, Robin A. Choudhury, Andrew M. Sutherland, Matt J. Hengel, Michael P. Parrella, W. Douglass Gubler

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Applications of systemic pesticides can have unexpected direct and indirect effects on nontarget organisms, producing ecosystem-level impacts. We investigated whether a systemic insecticide (imidacloprid) could be absorbed by a plant pathogenic fungus infecting treated plants and whether the absorbed levels were high enough to have detrimental effects on the survival of a mycophagous beetle. Beetle larvae fed on these fungi were used to assess the survival effects of powdery mildew and imidacloprid in a factorial design. Fungal conidia were collected from treated and untreated plants and were tested for the presence and concentration of imidacloprid. The survival of beetles fed …

A Groundwater Model Of The San Luis Obispo Valley Basin Using Comsol Multiphysics, Brian Whetsler Aug 2020

A Groundwater Model Of The San Luis Obispo Valley Basin Using Comsol Multiphysics, Brian Whetsler

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

A groundwater model of a subsection of the San Luis Obispo Valley basin was pro- duced using COMSOL Multiphysics 5.5 software. The goal of this project was to create a general model using forward modeling techniques which would serve as the foundation for a more refined, complete, and calibrated groundwater hydrology model. The San Luis Obispo and Edna Valley basins are characterized as high-priority by the California Sustainable Groundwater Management Act because of historic overdrafting of groundwater reserves during periods of drought in the early 1990's. Natural resource managers must use tools such as computer models to help forecast trends …

Meteoroid Impacts As A Source Of Bennu's Particle Ejection Events, W. F. Bottke, A. V. Moorhead, Harold Connolly Jr., C. W. Hergenrother, J. L. Molaro, P. Michel Aug 2020

Meteoroid Impacts As A Source Of Bennu's Particle Ejection Events, W. F. Bottke, A. V. Moorhead, Harold Connolly Jr., C. W. Hergenrother, J. L. Molaro, P. Michel

School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research

Asteroid (101955) Bennu, a near‐Earth object with a primitive carbonaceous chondrite‐like composition, was observed by the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security‐Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS‐REx) spacecraft to undergo multiple particle ejection events near perihelion between December 2018 and February 2019. The three largest events observed during this period, which all occurred 3.5 to 6 hr after local noon, placed numerous particles <10 cm on temporary orbits around Bennu. Here we examine whether these events could have been produced by sporadic meteoroid impacts using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Meteoroid Engineering Model 3.0. Most projectiles that impact Bennu come from nearly isotropic or Jupiter‐family comets and have evolved toward the Sun by Poynting‐Robertson drag. We find that 7,000‐J impacts on Bennu occur with a biweekly cadence near perihelion, with a preference to strike in the late afternoon (~6 pm local time). This timing matches observations. Crater scaling laws also indicate that these impact energies can reproduce the sizes and masses of the largest observed particles, provided the surface has the cohesive properties of weak, porous materials. Bennu's ejection events could be caused by the same kinds of meteoroid impacts that created the Moon's asymmetric debris cloud observed by the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE). Our findings also suggest that fewer ejection events should take place as Bennu moves further away from the Sun, a result that can be tested with future observations.

Nano-Petrophysical Characterization Of The Oil Window Of Eagle Ford Shale From Southwestern To Central Texas, U.S.A., Chad Larsen Aug 2020

Nano-Petrophysical Characterization Of The Oil Window Of Eagle Ford Shale From Southwestern To Central Texas, U.S.A., Chad Larsen

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Eagle Ford Shale and the overlying Austin Chalk are the main producing plays throughout Central Texas. Due to the high clastic nature of Eagle Ford Shale and its ability to produce and maintain fractures from hydraulic fracturing, this formation quickly became the favored target over Austin Chalk for unconventional hydrocarbon production. The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of nano-petrophysical properties of Eagle Ford Shale, which is still lacking. Drilling cores from three wells within the oil window of Eagle Ford Shale were examined at the Bureau of Economic Geology in Austin, TX. Multiple plug samples were …

The Post-Wildfire Impact Of Burn Severity And Age On Black Carbon Snow Deposition And Implications For Snow Water Resources, Cascade Range, Washington, Ted M. Uecker, Susan D. Kaspari, Keith N. Musselman, S. Mckenzie Skiles Aug 2020

The Post-Wildfire Impact Of Burn Severity And Age On Black Carbon Snow Deposition And Implications For Snow Water Resources, Cascade Range, Washington, Ted M. Uecker, Susan D. Kaspari, Keith N. Musselman, S. Mckenzie Skiles

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Wildfires in the snow zone affect ablation by removing forest canopy, which enhances surface solar irradiance, and depositing light absorbing particles [LAPs, such as black carbon (BC)] on the snowpack, reducing snow albedo. How variations in BC deposition affects post-wildfire snowmelt timing is poorly known and highly relevant to water resources. We present a field-based analysis of BC variability across five sites of varying burn age and burn severity in the Cascade Range, Washington State, United States. Single particle soot photometer (SP2) analyses of BC snow concentrations were used to assess the impact of BC on snow albedo, and radiative …

Variability And Temporal Trends Of Semivolatile Organic Compounds In Biological And Environmental Media, Kyunghoon Kim Aug 2020

Variability And Temporal Trends Of Semivolatile Organic Compounds In Biological And Environmental Media, Kyunghoon Kim

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

Exposure to semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in indoor environments and its potential impact on human health have been receiving increased public attention, because people in developed countries spend over 80% of their time indoors, SVOC levels are several orders of magnitude higher indoors than outdoors, and many SVOCs have various toxicities and endocrine disrupting potential. Concentrations of SVOCs in biological (e.g., human serum) and environmental (e.g., household dust, indoor air) media can help us better understand human exposure to SVOCs. For example, SVOC concentrations in biological media collected over several years may shed light on temporal trends of exposure due …

Investigation Of Pore-Scale Caco3 Distributions And Their Effects On Stiffness And Permeability Of Sands Treated By Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (Micp), Hai Lin, Muhannad Suleiman, Derick G. Brown Aug 2020

Investigation Of Pore-Scale Caco3 Distributions And Their Effects On Stiffness And Permeability Of Sands Treated By Microbially Induced Carbonate Precipitation (Micp), Hai Lin, Muhannad Suleiman, Derick G. Brown

Faculty Publications

Physical properties of MICP-treated sands are controlled by CaCO3 distributions in pore space, which remain relatively unexplored. CaCO3 can deposit at the particles' contact area (contact-cementing), coat sand particles (grain-coating), or create a cementation bridge between soil grains (matrix-supporting). The objectives of this paper are to determine the dominant CaCO3 distributions in pore space and investigate the effects of CaCO3 distributions on the small-strain stiffness (measured by S-and P-wave velocities) and permeability of MICP-treated sands. To achieve these objectives, cemented-sand and uncemented-sand models combined with three ideal CaCO3 distributions (contact-cementing, grain-coating, and matrix-supporting) were used to estimate the S-and P-wave …
