Liquefaction-Induced Dragload And/Or Downdrag On Deep Foundations Within The New Madrid Seismic Zone, Ishimwe Elvis May 2018

Liquefaction-Induced Dragload And/Or Downdrag On Deep Foundations Within The New Madrid Seismic Zone, Ishimwe Elvis

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Deep foundation elements are typically used to transfer structural loads for multi-story buildings and large-span bridges to a competent soil layer when 1) the soil close to the ground surface has no sufficient bearing capacity, and when 2) liquefiable soils are encountered. The majority of the bridges constructed within seismic zones rely upon the stability of earthen embankments and deep foundation that are installed above or within liquefiable soil deposits. Despite large factor of safety values or different load and resistance factors being used to adequately design deep foundations within seismic areas, soil liquefaction may cause extensive damage to the …

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

The Ellis Ranch Wildcat field in Knox County, Texas produces from an isolated carbonate platform located on the northern flank of the Knox-Baylor Trough. The platform is composed of the Desmoinesian aged Caddo Limestone and Rasberry Reef. The Rasberry Reef contains aragonitic, phylloid algal bafflestone mounds that form excellent hydrocarbon reservoirs. Aragonitic grains are prone to dissolution during burial and generate vuggy, intragranular porosity that enhances reservoir quality and connectivity. Similarly aged Caddo mounds have been drilled in Stephens County just southeast and on the opposite flank of the Knox-Baylor Trough. A forty-five foot core section was cut from the …

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

Perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) are highly persistent organic contaminants that have become a global health concern. Few studies so far have demonstrated successful decomposition of PFASs under ambient condition. As a result, this feasibility study aimed to quickly examine whether or not zerovalent iron (ZVI)-based materials, in particular palladium-doped nanoscale ZVI (so-called nZVI/Pd) known to dehalogenate many halogenated chemicals, can remove perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in water, one of the most widely used PFASs. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of various operating parameters including reaction pH, nZVI/Pd dose, and PFOA concentration, and thus to find best treatment options …

Quaternary Incision, Salt Tectonism, And Landscape Evolution Of Moab-Spanish Valley, Utah, James P. Mauch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

To study the history of processes that shape the Earth’s surface, geologists look for markers in the landscape that they can date and use to measure change. Rivers leave such markers in their deposits and terrace landforms and in the overall shape of their elevation profile from head to toe. This thesis uses luminescence and cosmogenic methods to date the sediment in terraces to determine when the river deposited it. Field mapping and global positioning system (GPS) surveying are also used to measure the distance between terrace levels to quantify how much change has occurred. This study seeks to answer …

The two major explosive phases of the 22–23 April 2015 eruption of Calbuco volcano, Chile, produced powerful seismicity and infrasound. The eruption was recorded on seismo-acoustic stations out to 1,540 km and on five stations (IS02, IS08, IS09, IS27, and IS49) of the International Monitoring System (IMS) infrasound network at distances from 1,525 to 5,122 km. The remote IMS infrasound stations provide an accurate explosion chronology consistent with the regional and local seismo-acoustic data and with previous studies of lightning and plume observations. We use the IMS network to detect and locate the eruption signals using a brute-force, grid-search, cross-bearings …

Estimation Of Porosity And Water Saturation In Dual-Porosity Pyroclastic Deposits From Joint Analysis Of Compression, Shear, And Electromagnetic Velocities, Andrew C. Gase, John H. Bradford, Brittany D. Brand May 2018

Estimation Of Porosity And Water Saturation In Dual-Porosity Pyroclastic Deposits From Joint Analysis Of Compression, Shear, And Electromagnetic Velocities, Andrew C. Gase, John H. Bradford, Brittany D. Brand

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In situ measurements of porosity and water saturation of pyroclastic deposits have the potential to improve interpretations of geology and hydrology in volcanic regions, and to provide more accurate estimates of dense rock equivalent for volcanic eruptions. However, rock-property models must consider the dual-porosity structure of pyroclastic deposits (i.e., vesicles within pumices and intergranular pores). Vesicularity, intergranular porosity, and water saturation all affect the density, elasticity, and dielectric properties of pyroclastic materials, which control seismic and electromagnetic velocities. The data from active seismic and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) techniques may improve porosity and water saturation estimation if the responses of seismic …

Application Of Ps Scattering Kernels To Imaging The Mantle Transition Zone With Receiver Functions, Han Zhang, Brandon Schmandt

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Both the thermal structures and the hydrated level of the mantle transition zone are attractive to researchers in solid Earth science fields. Although some aspects of the questions have been answered based on current geophysical observations, a high resolution seismic map of such layer on a continental scale is still valuable for improving our understanding of the lateral variations inside the mantle transition zone. Here we extend a 3D pre-stacking migration method to make it more applicable for imaging the mantle transition zone depths. After the validation of the method with 1D synthetic data, two types of 2D structures are …

A New Hybrid Method For Estimating Hydrologically Induced Vertical Deformation From Grace And A Hydrological Model: An Example From Central North America, Makan A. Karegar, Timothy H. Dixon, Jurgen Kusche, Don P. Chambers

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Hydrologically induced deformation of Earth's surface can be measured with high precision geodetic techniques, which in turn can be used to study the underlying hydrologic process. For geodetic study of other Earth processes such as tectonic and volcanic deformation, or coastal subsidence and its relation to relative sea level rise and flood risk, hydrological loading may be a source of systematic error, requiring accurate correction. Accurate estimation of the hydrologic loading deformation may require consideration of local as well as regional loading effects. We present a new hybrid approach to this problem, providing a mathematical basis for combining local (near …

Using Landlab, A Fine Scale Biogeography Model, To Measure The Sustainability Of Semi-Arid Vegetation In A Changing Climate, Lucy Gelb

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The distribution of vegetation in water-limited ecosystems is a product of complex and nonlinear interactions between climatic forcings (e.g., precipitation, temperature, solar radiation) and the underlying geomorphic template, which includes topography, geology, and soils. Changes in climate, particularly in precipitation and temperature, can dramatically alter the organization of vegetation. This is especially true in ecotones such as our area of study: the semi-arid transition between Great Basin shrub-steppe ecosystems and the coniferous forests of the Northern Rockies. Understanding and predicting how the spatial composition of terrestrial vegetation communities will change in these ecosystems is critical to predicting important future landscape …
