Physical Modeling And Analysis Of P-Wave Attenuation Anisotropy, Kasper Van Wijk Jan 2007

Physical Modeling And Analysis Of P-Wave Attenuation Anisotropy, Kasper Van Wijk

CGISS Publications and Presentations

Anisotropic attenuation can provide sensitive attributes for fracture detection and lithology discrimination. This paper analyzes measurements of the P-wave attenuation coefficient in a transversely isotropic sample made of phenolic material. Using the spectral-ratio method, we estimate the group (effective) attenuation coefficient of P-waves transmitted through the sample for a wide range of propagation angles (from 0° to 90°) with the symmetry axis. Correction for the difference between the group and phase angles and for the angular velocity variation help us to obtain the normalized phase attenuation coefficient A governed by the Thomsen-style attenuation-anisotropy parameters εQ and δQ. …

Sedimentation Patterns In A Stabilized Migratory Inlet, Blind Pass, Florida, Ping Wang, David K. Tidwell, Tanya Beck, Nicholas C. Kraus Jan 2007

Sedimentation Patterns In A Stabilized Migratory Inlet, Blind Pass, Florida, Ping Wang, David K. Tidwell, Tanya Beck, Nicholas C. Kraus

Geology Faculty Publications

The shoaling rate in Blind Pass entrance channel approximately equals the net southward longshore sediment transport rate. Most of the shoaling occurs along the northern side of the channel. Flow measurements and numerical modeling reveal that the ebb current is approximately twice as strong in the thalweg along the south side as compared to the rest of the channel. In contrast, the flood current is mainly uniform across the inlet and is stronger than the ebb flow over the northern portion. This flow-velocity distribution induced by a nearly 90-deg bend of the channel contributes to the shoaling pattern. Two years …

Data Report: Laboratory Testing Of Longshore Sand Transport By Waves And Currents; Morphology Change Behind Headland Structures, Mark B. Gravens, Ping Wang

Geology Faculty Publications

Data from five series of movable bed laboratory experiments are presented herein. These experiments were conducted in the Largescale Sediment Transport Facility at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, Vicksburg, MS. The data collected from these experiments are being used to improve longshore sand transport relationships under the combined influence of waves and currents and the enhancement of predictive numerical models of beach morphology evolution, in particular, with respect to modeling of tombolo development at detached breakwates and T-groins. These data were instrumental in the development and validation of GENESIS-T (Hanson et al. 2006) an enhanced version of …

Kentucky Structural Contours From Digitally Vectorized Geologic Quadrangles, Kentucky Geological Survey

Research Data--KGS

This dataset includes geologic stuctural contours of varying datums across Kentucky in shapefile format. These structural contours are compiled from structural contour layers published as a part of the individual Digitally Vectorized Geologic Quadrangles (DVGQ) datasets (by the Kentucky Geologic Survey: https://kgs.uky.edu/kygeode/services/pubs/?pubtype=DVGQ&searchtype=pubcategory). The original structural contours were mapped on the 7.5-minute (1:24,000 scale) series geologic maps published during the Kentucky geologic mapping program (Kentucky Geological Survey - U.S. Geological Survey from 1960 to 1989: https://kgs.uky.edu/kygeode/services/pubs/?pubtype=GQ&searchtype=pubcategory). The digital contours were subsequently digitized as a part of the DVGQ datasets during the geologic digital mapping program at KGS (1996 – 2007). Contoured …

Evaluating P And K Fertilizer Prescriptions From Site-Specific Technologies, John H. Grove, E. M. Pena-Yewtukhiw Jan 2007

Evaluating P And K Fertilizer Prescriptions From Site-Specific Technologies, John H. Grove, E. M. Pena-Yewtukhiw

Soil Science News and Views

Developing a field's fertilizer prescription as a part of a site-specific nutrient management plan can be one of the more costly tasks undertaken. Those costs are traditionally associated with gathering of a number of plant and/or soil samples, their testing, as well as acquiring and applying amendments. Soil sample analysis is particularly important for traditional phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and soil acidity (pH) management. Soil sampling requires skill and time, time that may be in short supply when crop harvest is to be soon followed by establishment of a succeeding crop. Soil test results are not always timely, further delaying …

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Iron, R. Stephen Fisher, Bart Davidson Jan 2007

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Iron, R. Stephen Fisher, Bart Davidson

Information Circular--KGS

Iron is one of the most abundant elements in rocks and soils, and one of the most common problems in groundwater supplies. Rainwater seeping through soils and bedrock dissolves iron and carries it to wells and springs. In deep groundwater systems that lack oxygen, iron occurs as dissolved ferrous ion and the water is clear. Under oxidizing conditions such as in shallow groundwater systems or where the water is exposed to air at a tap or faucet, however, iron converts to a ferric form when it combines with oxygen to form reddish-brown rust particles. In addition to natural sources, elevated …

Species Richness And Soil Properties In Pinus Ponderosa Forests: A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis, Daniel C. Laughlin, Scott R. Abella, W. Wallace Covington, James B. Grace

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

Question: How are the effects of mineral soil properties on understory plant species richness propagated through a network of processes involving the forest overstory, soil organic matter, soil nitrogen, and understory plant abundance? Location: North-central Arizona, USA. Methods: We sampled 75 0.05-ha plots across a broad soil gradient in a Pinus ponderosa (ponderosa pine) forest ecosystem. We evaluated multivariate models of plant species richness using structural equation modeling. Results: Richness was highest at intermediate levels of understory plant cover, suggesting that both colonization success and competitive exclusion can limit richness in this system. We did not detect a reciprocal positive …

Geostatistical And Stochastic Study Of Radionuclide Transport In The Unsaturated Zone At Yucca Mountain, Feng Pan, Ming Ye, Jianting Zhu

Publications (YM)

Motivation: Why Study of Unsaturated Zone? The unsaturated zone (UZ), where the proposed repository would be located, acts as a critical natural barrier by delaying the arrival of radionuclides at the saturated zone and by reducing radionuclide concentrations in groundwater through dispersion and dilution Quantitative prediction of radionuclide transport in the unsaturated zone becomes critical for performance assessment and design of the proposed repository of the Yucca Mountain Project

Application Of The Empirical Mode Decomposition And Hilbert-Huang Transform To Seismic Reflection Data, Bradley M. Battista, Camelia C. Knapp, Tom Mcgee, Vaughn Goebel Jan 2007

Application Of The Empirical Mode Decomposition And Hilbert-Huang Transform To Seismic Reflection Data, Bradley M. Battista, Camelia C. Knapp, Tom Mcgee, Vaughn Goebel

Faculty Publications

Advancements in signal processing may allow for improved imaging and analysis of complex geologic targets found in seismic reflection data. A recent contribution to signal processing is the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) which combines with the Hilbert transform as the Hilbert- Huang transform (HHT). The EMD empirically reduces a time series to several subsignals, each of which is input to the same time-frequency environment via the Hilbert transform. The HHT allows for signals describing stochastic or astochastic processes to be analyzed using instantaneous attributes in the time-frequency domain. The HHT is applied herein to seismic reflection data to: (1) assess …
