Geochemistry And Significance Of Mafic Dyke Swarms In The Pozantı-Karsantı Ophiolite (Southern Turkey), Osman Parlak Jan 2000

Geochemistry And Significance Of Mafic Dyke Swarms In The Pozantı-Karsantı Ophiolite (Southern Turkey), Osman Parlak

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Pozantı-Karsantı ophiolite, which is one of a number of the Late Cretaceous oceanic lithospheric remnants in southern Turkey, is situated in the eastern Tauride belt and consists of three distinct thrust sheets: an ophiolitic melange, a metamorphic sole, and an ophiolitic stratigraphic sequence. These units (except the ophiolitic melange) are intruded by isolated microgabbro-diabase dykes at all structural levels. The dykes from the lower crustal rocks (cumulates) are subalkaline in character and chemically similar to island arc tholeiitic basalts and basaltic andesites. They are enriched in some LIL elements (Rb, Ba, K and Sr) and depleted in HFS elements …

Late Devonian Conodont Fauna Of The Gümüşali Formation, The Eastern Taurides, Turke, Şenol Çapkinoğlu, İsmet Gedi̇k

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Late Devonian Gümüşali formation of the eastern Taurides is a terrigenous-carbonate rock sequence about 600 m thick, consisting mainly of quartz sandstone, quartz siltstone, shale, and carbonate rocks. Palaeontologic and sedimentologic data mainly indicate a shallow subtidal depositional environment. This sequence generally represents the shallow-water polygnathid-icriodid biofacies, and contains conodont faunas that range from the Upper falsiovalis Zone into the Upper praesulcata Zone. However, they do not correlate well to the Late Devonian standard conodont zonation because of the lack of zonally diagnostic species and the irregular vertical distributions of the present taxa. Herein, 54 taxa belonging to nine …

Late Devonian (Famennian) Conodonts From Denizliköyü, Gebze, Kocaeli, Northwestern Turkey, Şenol Çapkinoğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Late Devonian (Famennian) conodont faunas have been described from two incomplete stratigraphic sections (GD and GB) of the Ayineburnu member of the Tuzla formation, Denizliköyü, Gebze, Kocaeli, northwestern Turkey. The section GD comprises the Lower and Middle expansa Zones, and the section GB contains the Middle and Upper expansa Zones. Zonal indices for the Middle expansa Zone are identified in the section GB, whereas this zone is recognized on the basis of other key taxa in the section GD. Also, a new species of the Genus Branmehla, Branmehla gediki n.sp. is described from the section GD.

Variability, Petrography And Provenance Of Basement Clasts In Core From Crp-2/2a, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, F Talarico, S Sandroni, Christopher R. Fielding, C Atkins

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Distribution patterns, petrography, whole-rock and mineral chemistry, and shape and fabric data are described for the most representative basement lithologies occurring as clasts (granule to boulder grain-size class) from the 625 m deep CRP-2/2A drillcore. A major change in the distribution pattern of the clast types occurs at c. 310 mbsf, with granitoid-dominated clasts above and mainly dolerite clasts below; moreover, compositional and modal data suggest a further division into seven main detrital assemblages or petrofacies. In spite of this variability, most granitoid pebbles consist of either pink or grey biotite±hornblende monzogranites. Other less common and ubiquitous lithologies include …

The 624.15 m glaciomarine sedimentary succession recovered in the CRP-2/2A drillcore comprises lower Oligocene (< c. 31 Ma) to lower Miocene (18.5 Ma) strata that are overlain by a thin succession of Pliocene and Pleistocene strata. The age model for the CRP-2/2A drillhole, as presented in this paper, is based on combined microfossil biostratigraphy, 40Ar/39Ar ages on volcanic material, 87Sr/86Sr analyses on mollusc shells, and correlation of a magnetic polarity zonation to the magnetic polarity time scale (MPTS). Between 25.92 and 109.05 metres below sea floor (mbsf), several alternative correlations to the MPTS are possible, all of which suggest that sediment accumulation rates averaged ~180 m/m.y. between unconformities, although actual sedimentation rates may have been higher. Between 109.05 and 306.65 mbsf, the age model is straightforward and average sedimentation rates were much higher …

Disarticulation And Dissolution Of Crab Remains Across A Depth Gradient In The Bahamas: A Taphonomic Study, Rebecca A. Lincoln Jan 2000

Disarticulation And Dissolution Of Crab Remains Across A Depth Gradient In The Bahamas: A Taphonomic Study, Rebecca A. Lincoln

Honors Papers

The fields of Paleontology and Paleoecology would not be complete without taphonomy, the study of the processes affecting organisms between death and fossilization. Taphonomy is important because it allows us to make more complete conjectures about prehistoric organisms and environments, and makes us aware of possible holes and biases in the fossil record due to highly destructive processes or the loss of delicate, non-resistant organisms. Studies on the processes affecting modern organisms have contributed greatly to the understanding of ancient processes; however, most of these studies are nearshore and short-term. What is lacking is information on the effects of these …

Bad-Boy Bryozoan Biomarkers: Cheilostome Distribution Patterns Along A Bahamian Depth Gradient, Christopher J. Nytch

Honors Papers

In 1993 and 1994, the Shelf and Slope Experimental Taphonomy Initiative (SSETI) deployed thirty-five samples of sea urchins along the continental shelf/slope of the Bahamas in an effort to explore the paleoecology and taphonomic potentials of shallow water carbonate environments. Samples were retrieved at 1-, 2-, and 6-year intervals for examination and comparison of epibiont accumulation. Tests and spines of the sea urchin Eucidaris were examined for encrusting cheilostome Bryozoa. Specimens were identified to the genus level. Assessment of abundance and distribution patterns with water depth shows that cheilostomes are prevalent in photic waters, and lacking at depth. Burial of …

Hypothetical Origins Of Paleozoic Fossils From The Gulf Coastal Plain Of Arkansas, Karen Arbuckle

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A fauna of reworked Paleozoic fossils has been found in chert pebbles from the Gulf Coastal Plain in eastern Columbia County, Arkansas, although the nearest mapped exposure of Mississippian and Pennsylvanian rocks are fifty-five miles northward in the southern edge of the Ouachita Mountains. The surficial rocks at the collection site have been referred to the Claiborne Group of Eocene age by the authors of the geological map of Arkansas. Additional outcrops containing similar Paleozoic fossils have been found within a 15-mile radius. The fauna includes both lacy and twig-like bryozoans, articulate brachiopods, tabulate and rugose corals, stalked echinoderms, gastropods, …

Bulletin 4446 - Ord Land And Water Management Plan 2000, Agriculture Western Australia, Community Of Kununurra

Bulletins 4000 -

The wise use of the land and water of the Ord has become an imperative driven by increasing awareness of the impacts of current uses on ground water and the on the quality of the Ord River itself.

We have been lucky as a community that these resources are still in reasonable order and that we have the time to address the resource management challenges associated with our use of them. There is a wide range of land and water management issues to be addressed and all those involved have responsibilities to address some of those issues.

Ce-Qual-W2 Version 3: Hydrodynamic And Water Quality River Basin Modeling, Scott A. Wells Jan 2000

Ce-Qual-W2 Version 3: Hydrodynamic And Water Quality River Basin Modeling, Scott A. Wells

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

CE-QUAL-W2 is a two-dimensional (longitudinal-vertical) water quality and hydrodynamic computer simulation model that was originally developed for deep, long, and narrow waterbodies. The current model, Version 2, has been used in over 200 river, reservoir/lake, and estuary applications throughout the U.S. and abroad. Version 2, though, cannot accommodate systems that have a significant sloping water surface since the vertical coordinate system is aligned with gravity and vertical accelerations are neglected. The governing equations for CE-QUAL-W2 were re-derived so that it could be applied to entire river basins including river-estuary, lake-river, and reservoir-river systems with channel slopes. This re-derivation is one …

Variation Of Constitutive Model Formulation On Analytical Cake Filtration Models, Scott A. Wells Jan 2000

Variation Of Constitutive Model Formulation On Analytical Cake Filtration Models, Scott A. Wells

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Constitutive properties are required to model porosity, effective stress, porewater pressure, or permeability during cake filtration. By using an analytical cake filtration model based on Tiller (1975) with various constitutive property formulations, predictions of effective stress, permeability, and porosity distributions in a filter cake can be made. This analytical approach was only valid when spatially average values of porosity and pressure differential were constant over time. Several different constitutive property formulations were compared to data of effective stress and permeability as a function of porosity for kaolin clay in water. Also the spatial distribution of porosity in a filter cake …

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Research is needed to compare the different techniques for developing site‐specific phosphorus (P) recommendations on a field‐wide basis. The objective of this study was to determine the impact different techniques for developing site‐specific P recommendation maps on yield and profitability. Enterprise analysis combined with a crop simulation model and detailed field characterization was used to estimate the value of spatial P information in a system where N was not limiting. The systems evaluated were continuous corn (Zea mays) and corn and soybean (Gfycine max) rotations where sampling and fertilizer applications were applied annually and semi‐annually, respectively. The sampling techniques tested …

Nutrients As A Link Between Ionic Concentration/Composition And Diatom Distributions In Saline Lakes, J. E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz Jan 2000

Nutrients As A Link Between Ionic Concentration/Composition And Diatom Distributions In Saline Lakes, J. E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Diatom profiles in closed-basin lake sediments are commonly used to reconstruct climate change based on the observed correlations between salinity (ionic concentration) and modern diatom assemblages. Diatom assemblages are strongly correlated not only with salinity but also anion composition, with certain taxa characteristic of carbonate systems and others sulfate-dominated waters. Although strong correlations exist, the actual mechanisms behind these correlations are unknown. Here we briefly review the influence of salinity and ionic composition on nutrient dynamics in saline lakes and suggest that these interactions may drive shifts in diatom species composition along gradients of ionic concentration/ composition. We discuss the …

New Rare Cave Minerals From The Perolas-Santana Karst System (São Paulo State, Brazil), Paolo Forti, Ermanno Galli, Antonio Rossi

International Journal of Speleology

The Perolas-Santana karst system (São Paulo State, Brazil) has been partially studied from the mineralogical point of view. The present paper will contribute to the knowledge of the minerals in these caves, describing the occurrence of euhedral celestite crystals and of a rather rare mineral for a cavern environment: lithiophorite. Thanks to these new discoveries the Perolas-Santana karst system becomes one of the most important in Brazil from a mineralogical point of view. Finally, the result of the chemical analyses carried out on this newly discovered Monoxyhydroxide put in evidence a zonation in the distribution of the different elements which …

Isotopic Signature Of Burial Diagenesis And Primary Lithological Contrasts In Periplatform Carbonates (Miocene, Great Bahama Bank), Tracy D. Frank, Karin Bernet Jan 2000

Isotopic Signature Of Burial Diagenesis And Primary Lithological Contrasts In Periplatform Carbonates (Miocene, Great Bahama Bank), Tracy D. Frank, Karin Bernet

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The stable isotope geochemistry of Miocene sediments from the leeward margin of the Great Bahama Bank was examined to investigate burial diagenetic processes in periplatform carbonates. Data indicate that, in addition to differences in bulk proportions of neritic and pelagic carbonate along the slope, rhythmic variation in primary carbonate content has controlled patterns of burial diagenesis and associated geochemical signatures throughout much of the succession examined. The present study focuses on Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1006 and 1007, the most distal of five sites drilled from marginal to deep basin environments during Leg 166. These Miocene sections are characterized by …

Preliminary Results Of Bitumen And Whole-Rock Elemental Analyses Of Crp-2/2a, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, Richard Kettler, E. Papastavros

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Sediments and rocks recovered in CRP-2/2A coring operations contain relatively little organic matter (average TOC=0.28%) and very small amounts of solvent-soluble organic matter. Because Early Oligocene sediment included significant amounts of coal detritus, TOC values are higher in Early Oligocene rocks than in younger rocks. TOC values are highest in the fine-grained rocks deposited as part of the highstand systems tract (HST) and TOC values decrease from the bottom to the top of the HST. The TOC:TN ratios observed in the CRP-2/2A core typically exceed 10, and are strong evidence that the preserved organic matter comprises a mixture of detrital …

Laser-Derived, Particle Size Data From Crp-2/2a: Implications For Sequence And Seismic Stratigraphy, K J. Woolfe, L K. Stewart, Christopher R. Fielding, M Lavelle Jan 2000

Laser-Derived, Particle Size Data From Crp-2/2a: Implications For Sequence And Seismic Stratigraphy, K J. Woolfe, L K. Stewart, Christopher R. Fielding, M Lavelle

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Gravel-free, high-resolution (1-metre spacing, 32 channel) particle size data from the CRP-2/2A drill core indicate that many of the diamictites were likely deposited from floating ice. Textural dislocations occur at most sequence boundaries and provide independent corroboration of the sequence stratigraphic interpretation. Likewise the data largely support the correlation drawn (Fielding et al., this volume) between the sequence stratigraphic cycles and the regional seismic stratigraphy (an alternative correlation to Reflector ‘f’ is also suggested). The gravel-free data appear to be reflecting predominantly regional (global?) forcing with some possible local effects, and long-term trends persisting through gravelly textural dislocations.

Palaeogene Calcareous Nannofossils From Crp-2/2a, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, David K. Watkins, G. Villa

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Rare calcareous nannofossils from the Cape Roberts Project drillhole CRP-2A indicate that this area was episodically invaded by marginal oceanic surface waters during the late and late early Oligocene. These depauperate assemblages lack most of the biostratigraphic index fossils for the Oligocene, but do provide two datums that aid in constraining the age of the section: the last appearance datum (LAD) of Dictyococcites bisectus (23.9 Ma) at 149.28 mbsf and the LAD of Chiasmolithus altus (26.1 Ma) at 412.25 mbsf. Calcareous nannofossil assemblages stratigraphically below c. 440 mbsf contain conspicuous evidence of reworking of older (late Eocene) specimens that renders …

Morphology And Taxonomic Position Of The Late Cretaceous Diatom Genus Pomphodiscus Barker & Meakin, Vladimir A. Nikolaev, David M. Harwood

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Results from our investigation of Upper Cretaceous diatoms from the Marca Shale Member of the Moreno Shale in California and from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 748C on the Kerguelen Plateau ,Southern Indian Ocean enable a clarification of the taxonomic position of several diatoms. Differences in areola structure ,a primary and conservative character of the diatom valve, are used to separate diatoms recently included in the genus Benetorus. We resurrect he genus Pomphodiscusto include species with locular areolae, a central rimoportula ,and a central inflated chamber .We propose the new species Pomphodiscusk erguelensisn. sp. and new combination Pomphodiscusc …

Kinematic Structure Of Minipermeameter Flow, Daniel M. Tartakovsky, J. David Moulton, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Minipermeameters are rapidly becoming a popular tool for collecting localized
measurements of permeability in both laboratory and field studies. While one of the main advantages of minipermeameters is their ability to collect data on various support volumes, there have been only limited attempts to analyze their size and geometry. We define the support volume of minipermeameter measurements as a region containing 90% of the total gas flow, i.e., a region bounded by the 10% streamline. Using our new semianalytical solutions for the Stokes' stream function, we demonstrate that the support volume has a shape of the semitoroid adjacent to the …

Oligocene And Lower Miocene Siliceous Microfossil Biostratigraphy Of Cape Roberts Project Core Crp-2/2a, Victoria Land Basin, Antarctica, R. Scherer, S. M. Bohaty, David M. Harwood

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Marine diatoms are the primary biostratigraphical and palaeoenvironmental tool for interpreting the upper Palaeogene and lower Neogene strata recovered during the second drilling season of the Cape Roberts Project at site CRP-2 in the western Ross Sea, Antarctica. Silicoflagellates, ebridians, and a chrysophyte cyst provide supporting biostratigraphical information. More than 100 dominantly planktic diatom taxa are recognised. Of these, more than 30 are treated informally, pending SEM examination and formal description. Many other taxa are noted only to generic level. Lower Oligocene (c. 31Ma) through lower Miocene (c. 18.5 Ma) diatoms occur from 28 mbsf down to 565 …
