Detection Of Nitrate-N And Triazine Herbicides In Groundwater And Surface Water Of An Agricultural Watershed In Western Kentucky, John Potts, Larry Reber
Detection Of Nitrate-N And Triazine Herbicides In Groundwater And Surface Water Of An Agricultural Watershed In Western Kentucky, John Potts, Larry Reber
Soil Science News and Views
The quality of water in Kentucky's agricultural watersheds has received considerable attention in recent years. The main concerns in com production areas usually center on content of nitrogen (N) from commercial fertilizer and triazines from herbicide applications in water. Although N can be found naturally in Kentucky soils, it can't supply all the N that com needs to produce optimum yields. Therefore, fertilizer N is added to ensure ample nutrition. Triazine herbicides, on the other hand, do not occur naturally in the soil but are applied to the soil to effectively control weeds. Most commonly, these herbicides are applied at …
Forest Resource Statistics For Northern Utah, 1993, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forest Resource Statistics For Northern Utah, 1993, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
About 5.2 million acres, or 25 percent, of northern Utah is forested. Fifty-two percent of this forest area is capable of producing commercial wood products and is classified as timberland. Forty-eight percent is classified as woodland, primarily pinyon-juniper. The predominant forest types on the timberland are aspen, Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine, and spruce-fir. The National Forest System manages 70 percent of the timberland; 23 percent is under private ownership, and 7 percent is under other public ownership (local, State, and other Federal). Thirteen percent of the timberland is withdrawn from commercial timber production and is in a reserved status. Most reserved …
No Tillage Use For Crop Production In Kentucky Counties In 1996, Gerald R. Haszler, Grant W. Thomas
No Tillage Use For Crop Production In Kentucky Counties In 1996, Gerald R. Haszler, Grant W. Thomas
Soil Science News and Views
Two years ago, we reported the status of notillage adoption in Kentucky counties in the year 1994. Now, CTIC has published the results for 1996. As before, Kentucky leads the nation in percent of crops produced under no tillage, but the percentage has increased significantly. In 1994, 44% of crops were produced under no tillage in Kentucky, whereas in 1996, that figure had reached 51 %. The results for both 1994 and 1996 are shown in Table 1. It is evident that Kentucky has both maintained first place and has also increased its lead over the other states. The percentage …

Filter Strip Length And Fecal Bacteria Trapping From Poultry Waste - An Update, Mark S. Coyne, R. A. Gilfillen, Robert L. Blevins
Soil Science News and Views
Cheap, efficient, and environmentally sound waste disposal will be needed as Kentucky's broiler industry expands. The filter strip length needed to protect water resources from contaminants in surface runoff is a pressing issue in waste management and water quality. In a previous Soil Science News and Views (Vol. 15, No. 8) we reported that grass filter strips as short as 15 feet can trap over 90% of the fecal bacteria eroding from land-applied and incorporated poultry waste during runoff following rainstorms. In this update, we provide some additional information and conclusions from that study on filter strip length, based on …

Logging Utilization - Utah, 1993, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Logging Utilization - Utah, 1993, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
Data collected on 20 logging operations in Utah in 1993 provided board-foot and cubic-foot conversion factors of log scale and factors to apply to harvest volume estimates to obtain removals estimates. The components of timber products and removals, obtained by application of these factors to the 1992 Utah timber harvest, are included. Additional findings, presented in table form, are the diameter distribution of trees removed from growing stock per thousand cubic ft of products and the volume of logging residue in pieces 6 ft and longer as a proportion of product volume. Survey methods and estimates of data reliability are …

Utah Timber Production And Mill Residue, 1992, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service
Forestry
Utah's timber production in 1992 was 13.3 million cubic feet (63.7 million board feet, Scribner rule), up 9 percent from 1974. Sawlog production was 10.2 million cubic feet (52.5 million board feet). House log volume was 1.6 million cubic feet (8.2 million board feet). Lodgepole pine comprised 48 percent, Uintah County 29 percent, and National Forest lands 78 percent of the harvest. Mill residue volume was 7 million cubic feet, 82 percent of which was used, most for fencing, firewood, animal bedding, or industrial plant fuel.
Fracture Permeability And Its Relationship To In-Situ Stress In The Dixie Valley, Nevada, Geothermal Reservoir, Colleen A. Barton, Stephen Hickman, Roger H. Morin, Mark D. Zoback, Thomas Finkbeiner, John Sass, Dick Benoit
Fracture Permeability And Its Relationship To In-Situ Stress In The Dixie Valley, Nevada, Geothermal Reservoir, Colleen A. Barton, Stephen Hickman, Roger H. Morin, Mark D. Zoback, Thomas Finkbeiner, John Sass, Dick Benoit
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
An extensive suite of spinner flowmeter, high-resolution temperature and borehole televiewer logs were acquired in a 2.7-km-deep well drilled into a fault-hosted geothermal reservoir at Dixie Valley, Nevada. Localized perturbations to wellbore temperature and flow were used to identify hydraulically conductive fractures. Comparison of these data with fracture orientations from the borehole televiewer logs indicates that hydraulically conductive fractures in crystalline rocks within and adjacent to the producing fault zone have an orientation distinct from the overall fracture population. In conjunction with in-situ stress measurements from this well, Coulomb analysis indicates that these permeable fractures are critically stressed, potentially active …

Soil Assessment Of The West Gingin Area, Henry Smolinski, G G. Scholz
Land resources series
Soils of approximately 80,000 hectares in the West Gingin area, 100 km north of Perth, were surveyed from 1987 to 1989. The area lies on the Swan Coastal Plain within the Gingin Shire. The soils were mapped by the free survey method at a scale of 1:50,000. Thirty-five major soil associations and complexes were identified. These soils have been formed from various parent materials in a a range of depositional environments. Siliceous sand and sodic soils formed in alluvial-lacustrine sediments predominate. The main soils were sampled for chemical and physical analysis and their morphological, chemical and physical properties are discussed …

First Record Of Common Moorhen Nesting In South Dakota, William A. Meeks, Kenneth F. Higgins
First Record Of Common Moorhen Nesting In South Dakota, William A. Meeks, Kenneth F. Higgins
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The common moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) is widespread in North America, but is not very abundant throughout its range (Greij 1994, Common Moorhen, Pages 145-157 in Tacha and Braun [eds.] Migratory Shore and Upland Game Bird Management in North America, Allen Press, Lawrence). In North Dakota its status is accidental (Konrad 1983, Prairie Nat. 15:144); in South Dakota it is considered a casual visitor and a probable breeding species (South Dakota Ornithologists' Union 1991, The Birds of South Dakota, Northern State University Press, Aberdeen; Peterson 1995, The Breeding Bird Atlas of South Dakota, Northern State University Press, Aberdeen).

A Land-Use And Water-Quality History Of White Rock Lake Reservoir, Dallas, Texas, Based On Paleolimnological Analyses, J. Platt Bradbury, Peter C. Van Metre
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
White Rock Lake reservoir in Dallas, Texas contains a 150-cm sediment record of silty clay that documents land-use changes since its construction in 1912. Pollen analysis corroborates historical evidence that between 1912 and 1950 the watershed was primarily agricultural. Land disturbance by plowing coupled with strong and variable spring precipitation caused large amounts of sediment to enter the lake during this period. Diatoms were not preserved at this time probably because of low productivity compared to diatom dissolution by warm, alkaline water prior to burial in the sediments. After 1956, the watershed became progressively urbanized. Erosion decreased, land stabilized, and …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A joint inversion for two-dimensional P-wave velocity (Vp), P-to-S velocity ratio (Vp/Vs), and earthquake locations along the San Andreas fault (SAF) in central California reveals a complex relationship among seismicity, fault zone structure, and the surface fault trace. A zone of low Vp andh ighV p/Vs lies beneatht he SAF surfacetr ace( SAFST), extending to a depth of about 6 km. Most of the seismic
activity along the SAF occurs at depths of 3 to 7 km in a southwest-dippingz one that roughly intersectst he SAFST, and lies near the southweset dgeo f the low Vp and high Vp/Vs zones. …

Solubility experiments were performed at 5 °C by reacting 1 g of powdered gibbsite with 45 g of aqueous H2SO4-NaCl and HCl-NaCl (0.01 m H+) solutions at 0.1 m ionic strength. The kinetics of dissolution were monitored under extremely undersaturated conditions and appeared to favor a zero-order rate-determining process. The dissolution rate of gibbsite in the sulfate solution was approximately 10 times faster than in the HCl solution, which is consistent with trends reported in the literature for studies performed at higher temperatures. The enhanced dissolution kinetics of gibbsite (and by analogy, other aluminum-containing minerals) in …

Selected surface sediment samples (sediment depth 0-10 cm) collected in the Niagara basin (western Lake Ontario) were chosen for organic matter characterization using organic petrological and geochemical techniques normally reserved for the study of coal, petroleum source rock and crude oil. The study was performed to assess the effectiveness of these techniques in discriminating between natural and anthropogenic organic matter and to determine the extent of organic pollution of the lake sediments. The organic carbon contents of the samples vary from 1.5 to 3.5%, with upper layer (0-5 cm) samples have higher TOC values than those from the lower layer …

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Organic-rich from the Schei Point group (middle to late Triassic in age) and the Ringnes formation (late Jurassic) from the Sverdrup basin of the Canadian arctic archipelago have been geochemically evaluated for source rock characterization. Most samples from the Schei Point group are organic-rich (> 2% TOC) and are considered as immature to mature oil-prone source rocks [kerogen types I, I-II (IIA) and II (IIA)]. These kerogen types contain abundant AOM1, AOM2 and alginite (Tasmanales, Nostocopsis, Leiosphaeridia, acritarch and dinoflagellate) with variable amounts of vitrinite, inertinite and exinite. Samples from the Ringnes formation contain dominant vitrinite and inertinite …

How Accurate Are Uk's Nitrogen Recommendations For Corn?, Kenneth L. Wells, James E. Dollarhide, David C. Ditsch
Soil Science News and Views
Average corn yields produced on soils with high yield potential have steadily been increasing in Kentucky during the past several years. Yields from such soils in years with adequate amounts of rainfall well distributed over the growing season (May-September) may average 180 to 200 bushels per acre. A bushel of corn with crude protein content of 8 to 9% contains about 1.3 to 1.4% total nitrogen (N) on a dry matter basis. This is about 0.6 to 0.7 lbs total N per bushel of corn (at 15.5% moisture), or 108 to 126 lbs N per acre for a 180 bu/A …

The Effects Of Sparging On P- And Sh- Vertical Seismic Profiles, P. Michaels, W. Barrash
CGISS Publications and Presentations
While the introduction of pressurized air into an unconsolidated, coarse-grained fluvial aquifer might well be expected to affect the P-wave velocity profile below the water table, we have found that S-waves are also sensitive to changes induced by air sparging. In a study spanning over a year of sparging, observations of both P- and S-waves were conducted by Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP). While the primary objective was to characterize the aquifer, we have found that air sparging has significantly affected both P- and S-wave propagation. Below the water table we have observed as much as a 54% decrease in P-wave …

Immature Type II kerogen (HI= 660 mg/g) from the Lower Toarcian of the Paris Basin was separated into an alginite concentrate (HI = 952 mg/g) and an amorphous organic matter (AOM) concentrate (HI = 573 mg/g) by density centrifugation. The flash pyrolyzate of the alginite is characterized by high relative concentrations of several series of n-alkanones and n-alkenones (including mid-chain alkyl ketones), in addition to n-alkanes, n-alk-1-enes and n-alkadienes. To our knowledge, this Toarcian alginite is the oldest example of marine organic matter whose pyrolyzate contains mid-chain alkanones in such high relative concentrations. In sharp …

A Deep-To-Shallow Transition In The Fort Payne Formation (Lower Mississippian), Kentucky Highway 61, Cumberland County, Kentucky, David L. Meyer, Paul E. Potter, Jennifer L. Thies, William I. Ausich, Stephen A. Leslie
Map and Chart--KGS
The Fort Payne Formation of the Cumberland Saddle region of south-central Kentucky and north-central Tennessee is part of a vast marine sedimentation system that extended over much of North America during the Early Mississippian Period; broadly similar facies reached from Georgia through Tennessee and Kentucky, into western Illinois and Missouri, and into New Mexico and the northern Rockies (Pryor and Sable, 1974). Throughout North America the Fort Payne and its equivalents overlie a black shale (in Kentucky called the Chattanooga Shale) and underlie thick carbonates (in Kentucky, the Warsaw Formation and younger middle Mississippian limestones).

Pelletized Lime - How Quickly Does It React, Lloyd W. Murdock
Pelletized Lime - How Quickly Does It React, Lloyd W. Murdock
Soil Science News and Views
Pelletized lime is made by granulating finely ground agricultural (ag) lime. It may be dolomitic or calcitic depending on the nature of the original limestone. The fine lime particles are bonded together with lignosulfonates during the pelletizing process. In general, the pelletized lime contains about 9% lignosulfonates. Pelletized limestone is a product that has been on the market for many years. The price of the material on a per ton basis is considerably higher than bulk ag lime, so its use has mainly been confined to specialty markets, with little use in production agriculture. However, the product is becoming more …

Tillage Slows Fecal Bacteria Infiltration Through Soil, Mark S. Coyne, S. W. Mcmurry, E. Perfect
Soil Science News and Views
Bacterial pathogens can degrade ground water quality by infiltrating and eroding from land treated with poultry wastes. The potential for ground water contamination (as well as associated health risks and cost of water treatment) greatly depends on the depth of soil to the water table or bedrock and soil structure. Pathogens must move through the soil profile to contaminate ground water (although sinkholes can provide a direct channel from the soil surface to the water table in karst areas). Deep soils have less potential for contamination than shallow soils. Structureless soils retain fecal bacteria better than well structured soils. Research …
Soil Management For Intensive Grazing, Kenneth L. Wells, Charles T. Dougherty
Soil Management For Intensive Grazing, Kenneth L. Wells, Charles T. Dougherty
Soil Science News and Views
Recycling of plant nutrients is of major concern in managing paddocks in pasturefields for intensive grazing. Redistribution of nutrients present in fecal and urine deposits is an important issue in growing climatically and seasonally-adapted forage species and for efficient conversion of herbage into animal products while adding to the sustainability of the system. Some of the questions that arise in managing soils for intensive grazing are discussed below.
