Petrogenesis Of Plio-Quaternary Basanites In The Gandom Beryan Area, Kerman,Iran: Geochemical Evidence For The Low-Degree Partial Melting Of Enriched Mantle, Seyed Javad Yousefi, Abbas Moradian, Hamid Ahmadipour
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In the Gandom Beryan area, basanitic lava flows erupted from fractures in the Nayband fault zone and formed an area of about 300 km2 of basanitic rocks in the western part of the Lut Block. Olivine and clinopyroxene are the major phenocrysts in a microlitic groundmass for these basanitic rocks. The geochemical data show that Gandom Beryan rocks are basanite in composition and belong to intercontinental rifts related to alkali basanites. These rocks have low Fe/Mg ratios (Fe2O3t/MgO = 1.07-1.43) with low silica content (SiO2 = 44.89-48.26 wt.%) and are high-Ti basanites. The investigated rocks are characterized by a significant …

Estimation Of The Crustal Structure In Central Anatolia (Turkey) Using Receiver Functions, Begüm Çivgin, Bülent Kaypak
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The receiver function analysis method was used to determine the crustal structure in Central Anatolia, Turkey, by using teleseismic earthquake records. The method is based on the conversion of incident P waves into S waves reaching an interface in the crust or upper mantle and arrival of the converted wave to the station just after the direct P waves. A temporary seismic network, the Ankara Earthquake Monitoring Network (AnkNET), consisting of six broadband seismograph stations, has been deployed in order to monitor the seismicity in Ankara and its surroundings during the period of 2007?2010. In this study, the crustal structures …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The physical and physicochemical properties of thermal muds (peloids) from 20 spas in Turkey were defined and compared with those of naturally pure clay minerals, smectite, illite, sepiolite, and kaolinite, to define the suitability of their use in pastes, masks, creams, and/or mud baths. The liquid and plastic limit values of the peloids show medium to high plasticity. The values of the pure clay minerals vary from 110 to 369 and 60 to 130, respectively, being higher than those of the peloid samples except for illite and kaolinite. The peloid samples show very soft, soft, semihard, hard, and fluid properties …

The Neotectonics Of Southeast Turkey, Northern Syria, And Iraq: The Internal Structure Of The Southeast Anatolian Wedge And Its Relationship With Recent Earthquakes, Gürol Seyi̇toğlu, Korhan Esat, Bülent Kaypak
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
In southeastern Turkey, northern Syria, and Iraq, the Southeast Anatolian Wedge (SEAW) is recognized as lying between the high altitude Bitlis-Zagros Suture Zone and the Sincar Mountains on the Mesopotamian plain. This wedge narrows towards the south and contains several thrust and blind thrust zones merging with the basal thrust zone. These zones are determined mainly by locations of fault-propagation folding that generally limit the Plio-Quaternary/Quaternary plains in the region. The positions of these active thrust/blind thrust zones and their relationships to the right and left lateral faults may be used to explain the seismic activity of the region.

Evaluation Of Hydrogeochemical And Isotopic Properties Of The Geothermal Waters In The East Of Mount Sabalan, Nw Iran, Rahim Masoumi, Ali Asghar Calagari, Kamal Siahcheshm, Soheil Porkhial
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Mount Sabalan district is regarded as the best place to investigate geothermal activities in northwest Iran. Since the last episode of volcanic activity in the Plio-Quaternary time, hot springs and surficial steams as conspicuous manifestation of geothermal activities have appeared around the slopes of Mount Sabalan. The hot fluids circulating in this geothermal field contains anions chiefly of HCO3- and Cl-; however, SO42- content in some water samples is relatively high, imparting sulfate characteristics to such fluids. Geothermometric studies provided compelling evidence for estimation of the reservoir temperature (~150 °C) in the study areas. Thus, in this respect, the …

Feather-Like Hornblende Aggregates In The Phyllites From The Southern Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone, Iran; Their Origin And Mode Of Formation, Hossein Fatehi, Hamid Ahmadipour, Nakashima Kuzuo, Hesamaddin Moeinzadeh
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Several outcrops of spectacular feather-like hornblende aggregates occur in the phyllites of the Gol-e-Gohar complex (southeast of Iran) and form special Garbenschiefer rock types. The Gol-e-Gohar complex, as a part of the southern Sanandaj-Sirjan metamorphic zone, contains a succession of metabasites, phyllites, and slates intruded by dioritic intrusions. There are two types of hornblendes in the phyllites; the first one is concentrated around the fractures and the second one is randomly distributed in the rocks and forms radial feather-like hornblende aggregates. Petrographical and chemical characteristics of these two shapes of hornblendes are the same, except the latter is developed parallel …

Relationships Between Sequence Stratigraphy And Diagenesis Of Corals And Foraminifers In The Middle Eocene, Northern Egypt, Mohamed Tawfik, Abdelbaset S. El-Sorogy, Mahmoud Moussa
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Outcrops of the Middle Eocene in northern Egypt represent a Tethyan reef-rimmed carbonate platform with bedded inner-platform facies. The diagenesis of these outcrops was studied in detail. The facies are characterized by a reef core, back reef and outer lagoon, shoal, inner lagoon, and tidal flat carbonate sequences. The diagenetic sequences on the scleractinian corals and foraminifers were thoroughly examined. These sequences show various diagenetic features during episodes of fluctuating sea levels and appear to be related to the primary composition of the studied components and the transgressive-regressive cycles. The carbonate diagenetic history of the examined samples successively includes marine-phreatic, …

Late Quaternary Paleoceanographic Evolution Of The Aegean Sea: Planktonic Foraminifera And Stable Isotopes, Ekrem Bursi̇n İşler, Ali̇ Engi̇n Aksu, Richard Nicholas Hiscott
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Aspects of the paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic evolution of the Aegean Sea since ~130 ka are revealed by quantitative variations in planktonic faunal assemblages, the Δ18O and Δ13C isotopic composition of benthic and planktonic foraminifera, and Mg/Ca ratios in planktonic foraminifera extracted from five 6-10-m-long piston cores. Independent sea surface temperature (SST) estimates obtained using planktonic foraminiferal transfer functions and the Mg/Ca ratios show excellent agreement, with r2 correlation coefficients of 0.92-0.95. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages are similar, through time, across several deep basins, suggesting that major changes must have occurred in near synchroneity across the Aegean Sea. The data suggest that …

Stratigraphic Evidence For Development Of Aptian Intrashelf Basin In The Zagros Area, Eastern Fars Province, Sw Iran, Neda Khoshfam, Hossain Rahimpour-Bonab, Davoud Jahani, Davoud Morsalnezhad
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
?The Lower Cretaceous of the Arabian Platform is renowned for the development of intrashelf basins. The study area is located in eastern Fars Province on the northeast Arabian plate and has experienced this environmental condition. The present study investigated two surface sections (Genau and Anguru) of the Dariyan Formation and compared the results with three neighboring wells in eastern Fars (eastern Zagros Fold Belt) in southern Iran to determine the development of rudist-bearing carbonates and intrashelf basin sediments. The Dariyan Formation was deposited in the Aptian as shallow-to-deep water carbonate facies. Lagoon, rudist banks/barriers, and open marine/basinal facies and six …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
We obtained sulfur isotope analysis results of sulfide samples from hydrothermal vent chimneys of the eastern Pontide volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. The total range of δ34S values for vent chimneys in the eastern Pontide VMS deposits is -2.7 to 6.5 per mil. Sulfide Δ34S values show narrow variation in the Lahanos, Killik, and Kutlular deposits, but wider variation in the Kızılkaya and Çayeli deposits. The δ34S values of sulfides in Çayeli chimney samples gave a slightly higher range than the other Pontide chimney samples. In some samples, a rough isotopic zonation pattern was observed throughout chimney zones. Variations in …

Comparative Study On Geochemical Characterization Of The Carboniferousaluminous Argillites From The Huainan Coal Basin, China, Bingyu Chen, Guijian Liu, Dun Wu, Ruoyu Sun
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Aluminous argillites were widely deposited in the Taiyuan Formation at the Huainan Coalfield at the southeast margin of the North China Plate. However, knowledge about their formation conditions and geochemical characterizations is not presently known. We recovered underground aluminous argillites at depths of 485-610 m from a borehole in the Zhangji Coal Mine and characterized their geochemical parameters, including major and trace elements, by X-ray fluorescence, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The provenance, climatic conditions during the weathering process of parent rocks, weathering extent, and depositional environments of Huainan aluminous argillites were investigated. …

Geochemistry Of The Metavolcanic Rocks From The Çangaldağ Complex In The Central Pontides: Implications For The Middle Jurassic Arc-Back-Arc System In The Neotethyan Intra-Pontide Ocean, Okay Çi̇men, Mehmet Cemal Göncüoğlu, Kaan Sayit
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Çangaldağ Complex in northern central Turkey is one of the main tectonic units of the Central Pontide Structural Complex that represents the remains of the poorly known Intra-Pontide branch of the Neotethys. It comprises low-grade metamorphic rocks of intrusive, extrusive, and volcaniclastic origin displaying a wide range of felsic to mafic compositions. Petrographically the complex consists of basalts-andesites-rhyodacites and tuffs with minor amount of gabbros and diabases. On the basis of geochemistry, the Çangaldağ samples are of subalkaline character and represented by both primitive and evolved members. All rock types are variably depleted in Nb compared to LREEs, similar …

Planktonic Foraminiferal Biostratigraphy And Quantitative Analysis During The Campanian-Maastrichtian Transition At The Oued Necham Section (Kalâat Senan, Central Tunisia), Ezzedine Saïdi, Dalila Zaghbib-Turki
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Oued Necham (ON) section (Kalâat Senan, central Tunisia) provides a well-exposed outcrop of a Campanian-Maastrichtian series that consists essentially of chalky limestones (i.e. the Abiod Formation) grading progressively to a marly unit (i.e. the El Haria Formation). The transitional Abiod-El Haria succession comprises a rich hemipelagic-pelagic fauna in the study area, but ammonites (e.g., Pachydiscus neubergicus, the Campanian/Maastrichtian (C/M) boundary index taxon) are scarce to absent, thus preventing the recognition of the standard zones defined for the Tethyan realm. However, the rich planktonic foraminiferal taxa of the El Haria Formation allow us to establish an accurate biostratigraphical scheme. Accordingly, …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Major, trace, and rare earth element (REE) studies have been conducted on the Proterozoic clastic rocks of the Kerur Formation of the Kaladgi-Badami Basin, South India, to determine their paleoweathering conditions and provenance characteristics. Geochemically, these sedimentary rocks are classified as quartz arenite, arkose, litharenite, and sublitharenite. The chemical index of alteration values and the A-CN-K diagram suggest that the clastics rocks in this study underwent moderate to intensive weathering. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns with light REE enrichment, flat heavy REE, and a negative Eu anomaly also attribute felsic source-rock to sedimentary rocks of the Kerur Formation. In addition, Eu/Eu* (~0.77), …

Geochemistry Of Aegean Sea Sediments: Implications For Surface- And Bottom-Water Conditions During Sapropel Deposition Since Mis 5, Ekrem Bursi̇n İşler, Ali̇ Engi̇n Aksu, Richard Nicholas Hiscott
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Piston cores collected from the Aegean Sea provide a record of sapropel sequence S1, S3-S5. Primary productivity calculations using the equations of Müller and Suess suggest surface paleoproductivities ranged from 180 to 995 g C m-2 year-1 for sapropels and from 40 to 180 g C m-2 year-1 for nonsapropel sediments with corresponding total organic carbon values of 9%-12% and 1%-3%, respectively. The higher paleoproductivities exceed those in the most fertile modern upwelling zones, so are probably overestimated. Instead, enhanced preservation, particularly for S4 and S5, likely resulted from poor bottom-water ventilation beneath a salinity-stratified water column. If the preservation …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Lower Cretaceous sequences of the Ravanj anticline in Iran host the Ravanj Pb-Ba-Ag mineralization. Economic orebodies are restricted to the thrust zone within the brecciated massive limestone and immediately above the Jurassic shale and/or shale-limestone intercalations of the Lower Cretaceous. Paragenetic sequence and distinct zoning of mineral assemblages indicate that ore-forming fluid migrated through thrust zones along the NE-trending faults. The REE pattern of mineralized host rock is characterized by HREE-enrichment ((La/Lu)PAAS = 0.24). The Ce/Ce* ratio of mineralized host samples shows negative Ce anomalies, which is most likely inherited from seawater. The positive Eu/Eu* anomaly suggests high ?O2 …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
This study describes the subsurface sedimentary facies of a modern Red Sea coastal plain at the mouth of Wadi Al-Hamd, northern Saudi Arabia, in an attempt to infer the influence of aridity and limited tidal range on facies characteristics. The study provides criteria to delineate the fluviomarine transition in a setting where tidal signatures and other marine influences are weak. Six manually collected cores (1.4 to 1.75 m long) from the channels at the wadi mouth, beach ridge, intertidal flat, strandplain, and supratidal flat enabled the identification of 23 sedimentary facies. The sediments displayed rapid and tremendous variability in facies …

The Depth Effect Of Earthquakes On Tsunami Heights In The Sea Of Okhotsk, Andrey Zaytsev, Irina Kostenko, Andrey Kurkin, Efim Pelinovsky, Ahmet Cevdet Yalçiner
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The earthquake of magnitude Mw = 8.3 that occurred on 24 May 2013 in the Sea of Okhotsk was the most powerful earthquake in the region. Fortunately, the generated tsunami was small because of the deep focal depth (609 km) and was only detected by the nearest Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunamis (DART) buoy records. However, the event highlighted the fact that any earthquakes with similar magnitudes at shallower focal depths would have caused considerable tsunamis. In order to evaluate the effects of possible tsunamis in the Sea of Okhotsk, we simulated water displacements due to the 24 May …

Geochemistry, Zircon U-Pb Age, And Tectonic Constraints On The Bazman Granitoid Complex, Southeast Iran, Mohammad Reza Ghodsi, Mohammad Boomeri, Sasan Bagheri, Daizo Ishiyama, Fernando Corfu
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Bazman granitoid complex (BGC), including a large zoned pluton, intrudes into the upper Paleozoic sedimentary cover of the Lut block. It crops out on the southern slope of the Bazman volcano in Baluchestan Province of Iran. The intrusive rocks range from gabbro to various metaluminous to weakly peraluminous granites, and they are classified as I-type magmatic series. They display geochemical characteristics of typical volcanic arc magmatism at continental margins. Major- and trace-element variation diagrams show that fractional crystallization was the major process and crustal contamination, a subordinate process during the evolution of the BGC. The decrease in CaO, MgO, …

Assimilation And Fractional Crystallization Of Foid-Bearing Alkaline Rocks:Buzlukdağ Intrusives, Central Anatolia, Turkey, Kiymet Deni̇z, Yusuf Kağan Kadioğlu
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Felsic intrusive rocks within the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex provide a window into the geodynamic processes in operation during the final closure of the Neotethys Ocean. Previous studies were largely restricted to the calc-alkaline granitoids, and the structural and petrogenetic relations of syenitoids are poorly studied. The Buzlukdağ Intrusive Complex is a silica-undersaturated alkaline syenite that is differentiated into three concentric subgroups according to texture and grain size. Mineral compositions do not vary between the subgroups but differentiation has resulted in different mineral proportions. Mafic microgranular enclaves are present throughout the suite, indicating mingling and mixing between the coeval felsic …

Distribution Of Natural Radioactivity And Assessment Of Radioactive Dose Of Western Anatolian Plutons, Turkey, Argyrios Papadopoulos, Şafak Altunkaynak, Antonis Koroneos, Alp Ünal, Ömer Kamaci
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The distribution of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K in 70 granite samples obtained from 13 Western Anatolian plutons (Turkey) was measured by using γ-ray spectroscopy. The activities of the measured radionuclides varied up to 259 Bq kg-1 for 226Ra, up to 241 Bq kg?1 for 232Th, and up to 2518 Bq kg-1 for 40K, with mean values of 66 (±44), 90 (±47), and 1097 (±410) Bq kg-1, respectively, which are smaller than the mean values given for granites worldwide. The mean value of the increase on the external γ-radiation effective dose rate is 0.21 (±0.09) mSv year-1, varying by <1 mSv year-1. The mean value of the internal α-radiation was 0.15 (±0.10) mSv year-1, varying <0.5 mSv year-1. Most of the samples cause an increase to both the external and internal dose by <30%, which is smaller than the permitted limit. Therefore, there is no radiological risk from the usage of the samples studied as decorative and ornamental building materials.

Forty-two ditch cutting samples of the KR-1 offshore well from depths of 9660 ft to 10,920 ft composited at 90-ft intervals were subjected to sedimentological, micropaleontological, and geochemical analyses using standard procedures and the laser ablation-induced coupled plasma mass spectrometry technique, respectively. Sedimentological analysis revealed the presence of glauconites and the rare occurrence of framboidal pyrites, indicative of deposition in a slightly anoxic marine environment. Palynomorph percentage distribution shows that there are more terrestrially derived miospores (dominated by Zonocostites ramonae (Rhizophora spp.), Psilatricolporites crassus (Tabernaemontana crassa), Acrotichum aureum, and Laevigatosporites sp.) than marine phytoplanktons. Rare occurrence of Globoquadrina venezuelana, Globigerinoides …

Clay Mineralogy And Geochemistry Of Three Offshore Wells In The Southwestern Black Sea, Northern Turkey: The Effect Of Burial Diagenesis On The Conversion Of Smectite To Illite, Yi̇nal Neşes Huvaj, Warren D. Huff
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The conversion of smectite to illite has long been studied by numerous researchers because of its importance as a diagenetic metric. Interpreting the pressure, temperature, and age of the sequences in which this conversion occurs provides the possibility to identify the historical maturation parameters of hydrocarbon sources. The Black Sea Basin is known to be an area that can provide source rocks for oil and gas production. The purpose of this study was to determine the clay minerals and their abundances, to establish a stratigraphic correlation among three wells, which is useful to select specific stratigraphic horizons for hydrocarbon exploration, …

Late Quaternary Chronostratigraphy Of The Aegean Sea Sediments: Special Reference To The Ages Of Sapropels S1?S5, Ekrem Bursi̇n İşler, Richard Nicholas Hiscott, Ali̇ Engi̇n Aksu
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Four sapropel layers (S1, S3, S4, and S5) are identified in five 6-10-m-long piston cores collected from the Aegean Sea basins. A chronostratigraphic framework is established for the last ~130 ka using benthic and planktonic foraminiferal oxygen isotope curves, total organic carbon contents, volcanic ash layers, and limited radiocarbon dates. These data show that the onsets of sapropels S3, S4, and S5 in the Aegean Sea basins were not synchronous, highlighting the heterogeneity of the Aegean Sea basins in terms of rapid versus lagged responses to changing ocean-climate boundary conditions. In all cases, however, the development of sapropels S3, S4, …

The frontal belt of the southeastern Anatolia fold-thrust belt in Turkey contains several small to mid-size oilfields, producing from carbonate reservoirs of the Cretaceous Mardin group. Many of these fields are found along narrow, asymmetrical anticlinal structures, associated with the formation of the fold-thrust belt. The Çemberlitaş oil field in Adıyaman, southeastern Turkey, is one of the most important oilfields in the region. It produces from the Upper Cretaceous Derdere and Karababa formations of the Mardin group. We have conducted a detailed study of the microfacies, depositional environments, and sequence stratigraphy of the Karababa (Coniacian-lower Campanian) and Derdere (mid-Cenomanian-Turonian) formations …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
Apatite fission track (AFT) thermochronology is applied to the Horozköy granitoid, which outcrops within the Bolkar Mountains (south-central Turkey). The region comprises the Niğde Massif to the north, the Inner Tauride Suture Zone, and the Central Taurides to the south. The Niğde Massif and the Central Taurides collided during the Eocene following north-dipping subduction of the Inner Tauride Ocean beneath the Niğde Massif. The Ulukışla Basin formed above this suture zone. The AFT ages range between 23 and 16 Ma, although there was no significant uplift or exhumation during this period. During the Oligo-Miocene, the region experienced a slow uplift …
