Assessing The Re-Identification Risk In Ecg Datasets And An Application Of Privacy Preserving Techniques In Ecg Analysis, Arin Ghazarian
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
In this work, first we investigate the use of ECG signal as a biometric in human identification systems using deep learning models. We train convolutional neural network models on ECG samples from approximately 81k patients. Our models achieved an over-all accuracy of 95.69%. Further, we assess the accuracy of our ECG identification model for distinct groups of patients with particular heart conditions and combinations of such conditions. For example, we observed that the identification accuracy was the highest (99.7%) for patients with both ST changes and supraventricular tachycardia. On the other hand, we also found that the identification rate was …
Using Deep Learning For Children Brain Image Analysis, Rafael Toche Pizano
Using Deep Learning For Children Brain Image Analysis, Rafael Toche Pizano
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Analyzing the correlation between brain volumetric/morphometry features and cognition/behavior in children is important in the field of pediatrics as identifying such relationships can help identify children who may be at risk for illnesses. Understanding these relationships can not only help identify children who may be at risk of illnesses, but it can also help evaluate strategies that promote brain development in children. Currently, one way to do this is to use traditional statistical methods such as a correlation analysis, but such an approach does not make it easy to generalize and predict how brain volumetric/morphometry will impact cognition/behavior. One of …
Semantic Classification Of Multidialectal Arabic Social Media, Tom Rishel
Semantic Classification Of Multidialectal Arabic Social Media, Tom Rishel
Dissertations
Arabic is one of the most widely used languages in the world, but due in part to its morphological and syntactic richness, resources for automated processing of Arabic are relatively rare. Arabic takes three primary forms: Classical Arabic as seen in the Qur’an and other classical texts; Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) as seen in newspapers, formal documents, and other written text intended for widespread distribution; and dialectal Arabic as used in common speech and informal communication. Social media posts are often written in informal language and may include non-standard spellings, abbreviations, emoticons, hashtags, and emojis. Dialectal Arabic is commonly used …
Improving Bayesian Graph Convolutional Networks Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo Graph Sampling, Aneesh Komanduri
Improving Bayesian Graph Convolutional Networks Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo Graph Sampling, Aneesh Komanduri
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
In the modern age of social media and networks, graph representations of real-world phenomena have become incredibly crucial. Often, we are interested in understanding how entities in a graph are interconnected. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have proven to be a very useful tool in a variety of graph learning tasks including node classification, link prediction, and edge classification. However, in most of these tasks, the graph data we are working with may be noisy and may contain spurious edges. That is, there is a lot of uncertainty associated with the underlying graph structure. Recent approaches to modeling uncertainty have been …
Using Large Pre-Trained Language Models To Track Emotions Of Cancer Patients On Twitter, Will Baker
Using Large Pre-Trained Language Models To Track Emotions Of Cancer Patients On Twitter, Will Baker
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Twitter is a microblogging website where any user can publicly release a message, called a tweet, expressing their feelings about current events or their own lives. This candid, unfiltered feedback is valuable in the spaces of healthcare and public health communications, where it may be difficult for cancer patients to divulge personal information to healthcare teams, and randomly selected patients may decline participation in surveys about their experiences. In this thesis, BERTweet, a state-of-the-art natural language processing (NLP) model, was used to predict sentiment and emotion labels for cancer-related tweets collected in 2019 and 2020. In longitudinal plots, trends in …
Using Deep Learning To Analyze Materials In Medical Images, Carson Molder
Using Deep Learning To Analyze Materials In Medical Images, Carson Molder
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Modern deep learning architectures have become increasingly popular in medicine, especially for analyzing medical images. In some medical applications, deep learning image analysis models have been more accurate at predicting medical conditions than experts. Deep learning has also been effective for material analysis on photographs. We aim to leverage deep learning to perform material analysis on medical images. Because material datasets for medicine are scarce, we first introduce a texture dataset generation algorithm that automatically samples desired textures from annotated or unannotated medical images. Second, we use a novel Siamese neural network called D-CNN to predict patch similarity and build …

A Smarter Way To Manage Mass Transit In A Smart City: Rail Network Management At Singapore’S Land Transport Authority, Steven M. Miller, Thomas H. Davenport
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There is no widely agreed upon definition of a supposed “Smart City.” Yet, when you see city employees — in this case city-state employees — working in what are obviously smarter ways, “you know it when you see it.” One such example of a smarter way to work in a smart city setting is the way that employees of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore are using a new generation of data driven, AI-enabled support systems to manage the city’s urban rail network. We spoke to LTA officers Kong Wai, Ho (Director of Integrated Operations and Planning) and Chris …

Dissertations
In modern manufacturing, advanced metrology systems are continually being incorporated into quality control (QC) systems to provide high-density (HD) datasets. These datasets can contain millions of measurements that can be used to represent a part’s whole geometry. While integrating HD datasets into QC systems has brought several opportunities to enhance the performance of QC systems, it has resulted in new challenges in this area as well. While significant amounts of research have been performed in this area, the QC research community still strives to tackle these challenges. This study identifies key challenges regarding incorporating HD datasets into QC systems. Specifically, …
On Prediction Of Early Signs Of Alzheimer’S— A Machine Learning Framework, Abdalrahman Alsaedi
On Prediction Of Early Signs Of Alzheimer’S— A Machine Learning Framework, Abdalrahman Alsaedi
Dissertations
Dementia is a collective term used to indicate a loss of memory functions with the presence of at least one additional loss of a major cognitive ability that hinders a person’s previous level of functioning. Studies show that dementia is highly age- associated and that the most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Early recognition of Alzheimer’s disease, before irreversible damage to the brain has already occurred, is paramount to slowing or preventing the disease. Therefore, algorithms for the prediction of early signs of dementia are essential. Machine learning approach has been reported to use several data sources such …

Novel Applications Of Statistical And Machine Learning Methods To Analyze Trial-Level Data From Cognitive Measures, Chelsea Parlett
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Many cognitive tasks and measures can benefit from trial-level analyses including Item Response Theory models as well as other Bayesian and Machine Learning models. Specifically, this dissertation focuses mainly on task-based measures of metamemory and how within-set variability as well as item-level characteristics can improve the inferences researchers make about these measures.First, a clustering analysis of judgements of learning across a task is examined in order to detect different participant strategies on a metamemory task and whether strategy use differs by age. Second, the benefits of using item response theory models to analyze both individual and item-level differences in metamemory …
Thruster Communication For Subsurface Environments; Turning Waste Noise Into Useful Data, Stephen Cronin
Thruster Communication For Subsurface Environments; Turning Waste Noise Into Useful Data, Stephen Cronin
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Acoustic communication serves as one of the primary means of wirelessly communicating underwater. Whereas much of the developments in the field of wireless communication have focused on radio frequency technology, water highly absorbs radio waves rendering the link not feasible for most all subsurface operations. While acoustic links have enabled new capabilities for systems operating in this challenging environment, it has yet to reach the commodity availability of radio systems, meaning that an entire class of small, low-cost systems have been unable to make use of these links. The systems in question are primarily autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), as they …
Visual Analysis Of Historical Lessons Learned During Exercises For The United States Air Force Europe (Usafe), Samantha O'Rourke
Visual Analysis Of Historical Lessons Learned During Exercises For The United States Air Force Europe (Usafe), Samantha O'Rourke
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Within the United States Air Force, there are repeated patterns of differences observed during exercises. After an exercise is completed, forms are filled out detailing observations, successes, and recommendations seen throughout the exercise. At the most, no two reports are identical and must be analyzed by personnel and then categorized based on common themes observed. Developing a computer application will greatly reduce the time and resources used to analyze each After Action Report. This application can visually represent these observations and optimize the effectiveness of these exercises. The visualization is done through graphs displaying the frequency of observations and recommendations. …

Discovering Kepler’S Third Law From Planetary Data, Boyan Kostadinov, Satyanand Singh
Publications and Research
In this data-inspired project, we illustrate how Kepler’s Third Law of Planetary Motion can be discovered from fitting a power model to real planetary data obtained from NASA, using regression modeling. The power model can be linearized, thus we can use linear regression to fit the model parameters to the data, but we also show how a non-linear regression can be implemented, using the R programming language. Our work also illustrates how the linear least squares used for fitting the power model can be implemented in Desmos, which could serve as the computational foundation for this project at a lower …

A Fully-Automated, Deep Learning-Based Framework For Ct-Based Localization, Segmentation, Verification And Planning Of Metastatic Vertebrae, Tucker Netherton, Tucker James Netherton
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Palliative radiotherapy is an effective treatment for the palliation of symptoms caused by vertebral metastases. Visible evidence of disease is localized on medical images as part of the treatment planning process. However, complicating factors such as time pressures, anatomic variants in the spine, and similarities in adjacent vertebrae are associated with wrong level treatments of the spine. In addition, erroneous manual contouring of anatomic structures is a major failure mode in radiotherapy treatment planning.
The purpose of this study is to mitigate the challenges associated with treatment planning of the spine by automating the treatment planning process for three-dimensional conformal …

Improving Treatment Of Local Liver Ablation Therapy With Deep Learning And Biomechanical Modeling, Brian Anderson, Kristy Brock, Laurence Court, Carlos Eduardo Cardenas, Erik Cressman, Ankit Patel
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
In the United States, colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer, and 60-70% of patients will develop liver metastasis. While surgical liver resection of metastasis is the standard of care for treatment with curative intent, it is only avai lable to about 20% of patients. For patients who are not surgical candidates, local percutaneous ablation therapy (PTA) has been shown to have a similar 5-year overall survival rate. However, PTA can be a challenging procedure, largely due to spatial uncertainties in the localization of the ablation probe, and in measuring the delivered ablation margin.
For this work, we hypothesized …

Unsupervised And Supervised Learning For Rna-Protein Interactions And Annotations, Kateland Sipe
Unsupervised And Supervised Learning For Rna-Protein Interactions And Annotations, Kateland Sipe
Honors Projects
This project analyzed the base and amino acid interactions and annotations through the use of unsupervised and supervised learning techniques. For unsupervised learning, clustering found the data was not able to be distinguished into clear groups which matched the original annotations through kmeans clustering and hierarchical clustering. For supervised learning, the use of random forest, glmnet, and deep learning neural networks were successful in creating accurate predictions. However, machine learning likely will not be able to replace the original complex program, but could be used for possible simplification.

Integrating Common Data Analytics Tools Into Non-Technical Undergraduate Curricula, Kurt Kirstein
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
Aside from statistics courses, accessible data analytics skills are often excluded from traditional non-technical university programs. These are topics that are typically the domain of programs that focus on math, statistics and computer science. Yet the need for these skills in non-technical disciplines is changing. A rapid expansion of data-related processes in organizations of many types requires individuals who have at least a working knowledge of common analytic tools. This article briefly describes three categories of data analytics tools that can be useful for graduates in any discipline. The first category covers descriptive tools that allow students to learn what …

Automl For Anomaly Detection Of Time Series And Sequences Of Short Text, Cynthia Freeman
Automl For Anomaly Detection Of Time Series And Sequences Of Short Text, Cynthia Freeman
Computer Science ETDs
Automated approaches for parameter and algorithm selection greatly democratize fields such as machine learning, saving time and money as hiring experts can be prohibitively expensive. Unfortunately, anomaly detection is difficult to automate due to subjectivity and class imbalance. An anomaly detection system is presented that incorporates human-in-the-loop techniques and is dynamic, scalable, and able to work with non-annotated data. By focusing on meta-features of the input data, the system can intelligently choose the most promising anomaly detection methods. The system is agnostic to the medium of data; it only expects the data to be sequential in nature.
