We study inexact fixed-point proximity algorithms for solving a class of sparse regularization problems involving the ℓ₀ norm. Specifically, the ℓ₀ model has an objective function that is the sum of a convex fidelity term and a Moreau envelope of the ℓ₀ norm regularization term. Such an ℓ₀ model is non-convex. Existing exact algorithms for solving the problems require the availability of closed-form formulas for the proximity operator of convex functions involved in the objective function. When such formulas are not available, numerical computation of the proximity operator becomes inevitable. This leads to inexact iteration algorithms. We investigate in this …

This study evaluated the effectiveness of Planet satellite imagery in mapping seagrass coverage in Santa Rosa Sound, Florida. We compared very-high-resolution aerial imagery (0.3 m) collected in September 2022 with high-resolution Planet imagery (~3 m) captured during the same period. Using supervised classification techniques, we accurately identified expansive, continuous seagrass meadows in the satellite images, successfully classifying 95.5% of the 11.18 km² of seagrass area delineated manually from the aerial imagery. Our analysis utilized an occurrence frequency (OF) product, which was generated by processing ten clear-sky images collected between 8 and 25 September 2022 to determine the frequency with which …

This project procedurally generates an infinite wilderness populated with deterministic hiking trails. Our approach recognizes that hiking trails depend on contextual information beyond the location of the path itself. To address this, we implemented a layered procedural system that orchestrates the generation process. This helps ensure the availability of contextual data at each stage. The first layer handles terrain generation, establishing the foundational landscape upon which trails will traverse. Subsequent layers handle point of interest identification and selection, trail network optimization through proximity graphs, and efficient pathfinding across the terrain. In our daily life, we often face situations where we need to make precise judgments based on initially unknown information, while gathering all the evidence to make informed conclusions can be very costly. In this dissertation, we explore the problem of optimizing the decision-making process under uncertainty, and we focus on problems that can be found in both theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics. The primary goal is to develop approximation algorithms with guaranteed worst-case performance. Individuals from marginalized backgrounds face different healthcare outcomes due to algorithmic bias in the technological healthcare industry. Algorithmic biases, which are the biases that arise from the set of steps used to solve or analyze a problem, are evident when people from marginalized communities use healthcare technology. For example, many pulse oximeters, which are the medical devices used to measure oxygen saturation in the blood, are not able to accurately read people who have darker skin tones. In this file, I present a sequence of algorithms that handle procedural level generation for the game Fragment, a game designed for CMSI 4071 and CMSI 4071 in collaboration with students from the LMU Animation department. I use algorithms inspired by graph theory and implementing best practices to the best of my ability. The full level generation sequence is comprised of four algorithms: the terrain generation, boss room placement, player spawn point selection, and enemy population. The terrain generation algorithm takes advantage of tree traversal methods to create a connected graph of walkable tiles. The boss room placement algorithm randomly …

Algorithms are increasingly making decisions in organizations that carry moral consequences and such decisions are considered to be ordinarily made by leaders. An important consideration to be made by organizations is therefore whether adopting algorithms in this domain will be accepted by employees and whether this practice will harm their reputation. Computational geometry is a branch of computer science dedicated to the study and development of algorithms that solve geometric problems. These algorithms are often complex, so this project involves the development of a teaching tool for various computational geometry algorithms. A Node app was developed which allows a user to create their own inputs for an algorithm and watch a visualization of how an algorithm solves one of the various problems. This paper expands the authors’ prior work[1], which focuses on developing a convolutional neural network (CNN) model capable of mapping time-averaged, unsteady Reynold’s-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations to higher resolution results informed by time-averaged detached eddy simulations (DES). The authors present improvements over the prior CNN autoencoder model that result from hyperparameter optimization, increased data set augmentation through the adoption of a patch-wise training approach, and the predictions of primitive variables rather than vorticity magnitude. Opportunistic routing (OR) can greatly increase transmission reliability and network throughput in wireless ad-hoc networks by taking advantage of the broadcast nature of the wireless medium. However, network congestion is a barrier in the way of OR's performance improvement, and network congestion control is a challenge in OR algorithms, because only the pure physical channel conditions of the links are considered in forwarding decisions. In this work, we established, validated, and optimized a novel computational framework for tracing arbitrarily oriented actin filaments in cryo-electron tomography maps. Our approach was designed for highly complex intracellular architectures in which a long-range cytoskeleton network extends throughout the cell bodies and protrusions. The irregular organization of the actin network, as well as cryo-electron-tomography-specific noise, missing wedge artifacts, and map dimensions call for a specialized implementation that is both robust and efficient. This thesis presents the findings of a computational study on algorithms for Simple Stochastic Games (SSG). Simple Stochastic Games are a restriction of the Shapley stochastic model motivated by their applications in AI planning, logic synthesis, and theoretical computer science. This thesis seeks to empirically assess the performance of these algorithms to compensate for their lack of strong complexity results. Where applicable, we include both variations of algorithms where stable strategies are computed by a linear-programming and naive approach. Studies of the photometric variability of astronomical sources from ground-based telescopes must overcome atmospheric extinction effects. Differential photometry by reference to an ensemble of reference stars which closely match the target in terms of magnitude and colour can mitigate these effects. This Paper describes the design, implementation, and operation of a novel algorithm – The Locus Algorithm – which enables optimised differential photometry. Ranking is an essential process that allows sporting authorities to determine the relative performance of athletes. While ranking is straightforward in some sports, it is more complicated in MMA (mixed martial arts), where competition is often fragmented. This paper describes the mathematics behind four existing ranking algorithms: Elo’s System, Massey’s Method, Colley’s Method, and Google’s PageRank, and shows how to adapt them to rank MMA fighters in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). In this thesis, we explore the problem of approximating the number of elementary substructures called simplices in large k-uniform hypergraphs. The hypergraphs are assumed to be too large to be stored in memory, so we adopt a data stream model, where the hypergraph is defined by a sequence of hyperedges.

We present here work on matching problems, namely hedonic games, also known as coalition formation games. We introduce two classes of hedonic games, Super Altruistic Hedonic Games (SAHGs) and Anchored Team Formation Games (ATFGs), and investigate the computational complexity of finding optimal partitions of agents into coalitions, or finding - or determining the existence of - stable coalition structures. We introduce a new stability notion for hedonic games and examine its relation to core and Nash stability for several classes of hedonic games.

Assessing the credibility of research claims is a central, continuous, and laborious part of the scientific process. Credibility assessment strategies range from expert judgment to aggregating existing evidence to systematic replication efforts. Such assessments can require substantial time and effort. Research progress could be accelerated if there were rapid, scalable, accurate credibility indicators to guide attention and resource allocation for further assessment. The SCORE program is creating and validating algorithms to provide confidence scores for research claims at scale. Aircraft contrail emission is widely believed to be a contributing factor to global climate change. We have used machine learning techniques on images containing contrails in hopes of being able to identify those which contain contrails and those that do not. The developed algorithm processes data on contrail characteristics as captured by long-term image records. Images collected by the United States Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Management user facility(ARM) were used to train a deep convolutional neural network for the purpose of this contrail classification.
