Algorithm Performance In The Search For Hamiltonian Cycles, Chance Davis Apr 2026

Algorithm Performance In The Search For Hamiltonian Cycles, Chance Davis

Honors Theses

The Hamiltonian cycle problem is ubiquitous in both computer science and graph theory: Given a connected graph, a solution would either confirm the existence of a cycle which visits each vertex only once or its nonexistence. The importance of this problem, as well as its difficulty, is described in the Clay Mathematics Institute’s Millenium Prize Problems and Karp’s 21 NP-complete problems. Despite its “hardness,” solutions to the Hamiltonian cycle problem are desired in logistics, electronic circuit design, and network routing, among other fields. In this work, we benchmark a promising exhaustive enumeration algorithm on various graphs, including ones derived from …

A General Weighting Theory For Ensemble Learning: Beyond Variance Reduction Via Spectral And Geometric Structure, Ernest Fokoue Mar 2026

A General Weighting Theory For Ensemble Learning: Beyond Variance Reduction Via Spectral And Geometric Structure, Ernest Fokoue

Articles

Ensemble learning is traditionally justified as a variance-reduction strategy, explaining its strong performance for unstable predictors such as decision trees. This explanation, however, does not account for ensembles constructed from intrinsically stable estimators-including smoothing splines, kernel ridge regression, Gaussian process regression, and other regularized reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) methods whose variance is already tightly controlled by regularization and spectral shrinkage. This paper develops a general weighting theory for ensemble learning that moves beyond classical variance-reduction arguments. We formalize ensembles as linear operators acting on a hypothesis space and endow the space of weighting sequences with geometric and spectral constraints. …

On Fibonacci Ensembles: An Alternative Approach To Ensemble Learning Inspired By The Timeless Architecture Of The Golden Ratio, Ernest Fokoue Mar 2026

On Fibonacci Ensembles: An Alternative Approach To Ensemble Learning Inspired By The Timeless Architecture Of The Golden Ratio, Ernest Fokoue

Articles

Nature rarely reveals her secrets bluntly, yet in the Fibonacci sequence she grants us a glimpse of her quiet architecture of growth, harmony, and recursive stability \citep{Koshy2001Fibonacci, Livio2002GoldenRatio}. From spiral galaxies to the unfolding of leaves, this humble sequence reflects a universal grammar of balance. In this work, we introduce \emph{Fibonacci Ensembles}, a mathematically principled yet philosophically inspired framework for ensemble learning that complements and extends classical aggregation schemes such as bagging, boosting, and random forests \citep{Breiman1996Bagging, Breiman2001RandomForests, Friedman2001GBM, Zhou2012Ensemble, HastieTibshiraniFriedman2009ESL}. Two intertwined formulations unfold: (1) the use of normalized Fibonacci weights -- tempered through orthogonalization and Rao--Blackwell optimization -- …

Addressing The Problems Of Data Variations, Quality, And Scarcity In Training Deep Neural Networks, Jian Sun Mar 2026

Addressing The Problems Of Data Variations, Quality, And Scarcity In Training Deep Neural Networks, Jian Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The performance of deep neural networks (DNNs) is strongly influenced by the characteristics and quality of the underlying datasets. This Ph.D. dissertation addresses three pervasive data challenges-imbalance, quality degradation, and scarcity-that commonly hinder the effectiveness of DNNs in computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP) applications.

Class imbalance remains one of the most frequent causes of degraded model generalization. While Focal Loss effectively mitigates inter-class imbalance by assigning higher weights to minority classes, it struggles with intra-class imbalance, particularly in video datasets where longer clips dominate feature representation. To address this, I implement and utilize …

Evolving Solutions For Red Blood Cell Preservation, Ali Alkafaji, Charles A. Elder, Mohammad Zaidi, Kavin Parthiv, Michael A. Menze Mar 2026

Evolving Solutions For Red Blood Cell Preservation, Ali Alkafaji, Charles A. Elder, Mohammad Zaidi, Kavin Parthiv, Michael A. Menze

The Cardinal Edge

In emergencies such as natural disasters, armed conflicts, or during outer space missions, the availability of transfusable blood can mean the difference between life and death. Red blood cells (RBCs) must be stored at +4 ± 2 °C and have a shelf life of just 42 days, which makes maintaining a stable blood supply during adverse conditions extraordinarily challenging. This challenge was especially apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic when hospitals faced severe blood shortages. Freeze-drying, or lyophilization, offers a promising avenue to extend the shelf life of RBCs for transfusion during crises. However, a significant hurdle in dry preservation is …

A Knowledge Transfer-Based Membrane Evolutionary Algorithm For Solving Large-Scale Sorted Waste Collection Problem With Timeliness, Wenxue Zhang, Boquan Gao, Aldy Gunawan, Yunyun Niu, Jianhua Xiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The sorted collection of municipal solid waste has emerged as an effective waste management strategy due to varying timeliness requirements across different waste types, giving rise to the critical research challenge of timeliness-based waste collection. While existing algorithms primarily focus on small-scale versions of this problem, solving large-scale timeliness-based waste collection problems remains particularly challenging. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a knowledge transfer-based membrane evolutionary algorithm. Specifically, the original problem and simplified problem are constructed in different membranes respectively, and the knowledge transfer learning mechanism is incorporated into the membrane evolutionary algorithm, enabling effective information exchange between the …

Demystifying Hardware Formal Verification For Undergraduate Education: A Risc-V Processor Case Study With Coursework Implementation, Riley A. Peters Mar 2026

Demystifying Hardware Formal Verification For Undergraduate Education: A Risc-V Processor Case Study With Coursework Implementation, Riley A. Peters

Master's Theses

Hardware verification engineers apply formal methods to prove that a digital device always behaves according to its specification. This differs from traditional functional verification, in which engineers establish correctness by repeatedly sending test inputs to the device and comparing the outputs against a reference model. With the growing complexity of integrated circuits, the demand for digital verification engineers with formal methods experience has continued to increase. However, California Polytechnic State University: San Luis Obispo's current curriculum lacks dedicated material to prepare students for these roles.

This thesis seeks to address the lack of formal methods material through two efforts. First, …

A Scalable Iteration Of The Horizon Simulation Framework Using Multithreading Techniques, Jason E. Beals Mar 2026

A Scalable Iteration Of The Horizon Simulation Framework Using Multithreading Techniques, Jason E. Beals

Master's Theses

The Horizon Simulation Framework (HSF) occupies a unique space in the modern aerospace modeling landscape, enabling flexible, modular modeling of mission-level agent behavior through an object-oriented, hierarchical design. HSF's hallmark breadth-first search scheduling algorithm explores a "multiverse" of possible mission execution pathways, enabling exhaustive evaluation of schedule combinations against user-defined heuristics.

As aerospace systems become increasingly complex, HSF faces critical challenges in establishing verifiable, deterministic behavior. The framework's core scheduling algorithm had not undergone systematic validation, leaving questions about temporal consistency, state management correctness, and reproducibility across different program executions. Furthermore, the exponential growth of schedule combinations creates computational bottlenecks …

New Fast Polynomial Root-Finders, Soo Go Feb 2026

New Fast Polynomial Root-Finders, Soo Go

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Univariate polynomial root-finding has been studied for four millennia and very intensively in the last decades. Our {\em black box root-finder} involves no coefficients and works for a black box polynomial, defined by an oracle (that is, black box subroutine) for its evaluation. Such root-finders have various benefits, e.g., are particularly efficient where a polynomial can be evaluated fast, say, is a sum of a small number of shifted monomials (x-c)^a.

Our root-finder approximates all d complex zeros of a dth degree polynomial p(x) (aka roots of equation p(x)=0) by using Las Vegas expected number of bit-operations within a factor …

Online Visual Query System For Real-Time Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Data Explorations With Error Bounds, Xueqi Huang Feb 2026

Online Visual Query System For Real-Time Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Data Explorations With Error Bounds, Xueqi Huang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Modern datasets continue to grow in size, dimensionality, and heterogeneity, creating increasing tension between the need for responsive, interactive analysis and the computational cost of accessing, aggregating, and visualizing large volumes of data. Traditional database engines and visualization tools often assume that full data retrieval is feasible or that exact computation is necessary for meaningful insight. In practice, however, analysts frequently benefit from timely, uncertainty-aware approximations than from delayed and exact results. This thesis investigates how data summarization techniques, specifically mergeable sketches can be combined with progressive, out-of-core visualization methods to support interactive exploration of datasets that exceed main memory. …

Light Cone Cancellation For Variational Quantum Eigensolver In Solving Noisy Max-Cut, Xinwei Lee, Xinjian Yan, Ningyi Xie, Yoshiyuki Saito, Leo Kurosawa, Nobuyoshi Asai, Dongsheng Cai, Hoong Chuin Lau Feb 2026

Light Cone Cancellation For Variational Quantum Eigensolver In Solving Noisy Max-Cut, Xinwei Lee, Xinjian Yan, Ningyi Xie, Yoshiyuki Saito, Leo Kurosawa, Nobuyoshi Asai, Dongsheng Cai, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) is a quantum-classical hybrid algorithm used to estimate the ground energy of a given Hamiltonian. It consists of a parameterized quantum circuit, which the parameters are optimized using a classical optimizer. With the increasing need in solving large-scale problems in real-world applications, solving those large problems with fewer qubits and fewer gates becomes essential, so that we reduce the simulation difficulty and mitigate the effect of noise in real quantum hardware. In this study, we applied the Light Cone Cancellation (LCC) method to reduce the number of qubits and gates required in a two-local ansatz. LCC …

A Virtual-Reality-Based Dental Simulator For Endodontics With Automated Formative Feedback, Yousef Salah Abo El Ela Jan 2026

A Virtual-Reality-Based Dental Simulator For Endodontics With Automated Formative Feedback, Yousef Salah Abo El Ela

Theses and Dissertations

Advancements in virtual reality (VR) and haptic technology are transforming the landscape of medical and dental education, offering new avenues for safe, immersive, and repeatable training experiences. Within dentistry, endodontics presents unique challenges for preclinical education due to anatomical complexity, limited access to extracted teeth, ethical concerns, and the shortcomings of conventional plastic models. Despite endodontics specific plastic teeth being available, they fall short of replicating the hardness of real extracted teeth, are relatively costly compared to generic plastic teeth, and are ultimately a disposable item which makes them inadequate as a sustainable long-term solution. Extracted teeth do a much …

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Quantum neural networks (QNNs) offer a principled pathway for integrating quantum computation with machine learning through superposition- and entanglement-based representations. This chapter proposes an architecture-aware design and evaluation framework for modern QNNs, emphasizing robustness and system feasibility alongside predictive performance. Multiple architectures variational QNNs, quantum convolutional neural networks, tensor-network hybrids, and fully quantum models—are assessed under a unified protocol. Experimental analysis shows that the proposed architecture-search–guided QNN achieves 91.8% classification accuracy and an F1-score of 0.914, outperforming fixed-template variational QNNs by approximately 5.6 percentage points. Under depolarizing noise with probability p = 0.10, the proposed model retains 85.3% accuracy, whereas …

Cogram: A Computational Pipeline For Genome Assembly And Reconstruction Using Graph Neural Networks, William Coggins Jan 2026

Cogram: A Computational Pipeline For Genome Assembly And Reconstruction Using Graph Neural Networks, William Coggins

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Genome assembly — the reconstruction of a complete DNA sequence from short, overlapping reads — remains a fundamental challenge in computational biology. A central difficulty is distinguishing true genomic overlaps from spurious connections arising from repetitive sequences, a task that traditional assemblers address through hand-tuned heuristic rules applied to de Bruijn or overlap graphs. This thesis introduces COGRAM (Coggins–Ramasamy Assembly Method), a genome assembly pipeline that reframes sequence reconstruction as an edge classification task on a k-mer overlap graph, replacing heuristic graph cleaning with a learned model.

COGRAM constructs a directed overlap graph from raw sequencing reads using a k-mer …

Framework For Task Offloading In O-Ran Architecture For Heterogeneous Computing Applications, Samira Taheri, Neda Moghim, Naser Movahhedinia, Sachin Shetty

Center for Secure and Intelligent Critical Systems (CSICS) Publications

Computational offloading transfers tasks from resource-constrained devices to more capable servers or cloud platforms, improving processing speed and user experience. Open radio access networks (O-RAN's) disaggregated architecture and open interfaces make it suitable for offloading delay-sensitive tasks, enhancing real-time application performance. This study focuses on task offloading in O-RAN, a reference network architecture. Although research on O-RAN is limited, existing work lacks a comprehensive approach to offloading, including offloading layer determination, node selection, and resource allocation based on task types and their latency needs. We propose a delay-aware task offloading framework within O-RAN to support diverse delay requirements, improving offloading …

Toward Interpretable Multi-Omics Multimodal Biomedical Artificial Intelligence, Yanjun Lyu Jan 2026

Toward Interpretable Multi-Omics Multimodal Biomedical Artificial Intelligence, Yanjun Lyu

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations

The complexity of human disease arises from biological processes that unfold across multiple scales, from molecular variation through cellular function, tissue organisation, brain phenotypes, each of which is associated with distinct measurement modalities, regularities, and characteristic. Contemporary biomedical artificial intelligence has brought the opportunity to reveal the complexity with in; however, its methodological default, in which models are trained on most readily available modality, does not adequately engage with the multi-scale connected structure by which biological meaning is constituted. The research area of multi-omics and multi-modal AI for biomedicine remains at an early exploratory stage, and the work presented in …

Algorithmic Trading In Idiosyncratic-Payoff Markets: A Multi-Agent System For On-Chain Prediction Contracts, Saif Aldeen A.K. Agha

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis documents the design, deployment, and forward-test evaluation of an evolutionary multi-agent algorithmic trading system on Polymarket, the largest decentralized prediction market. The system pairs a locally-hosted 72-billion-parameter language model with a gradient-boosted statistical filter and an evolutionary selection mechanism that maintains a population of approximately 500 autonomous trading agents. Each agent generates a probability estimate for an event, compares it to the prevailing market price, and trades the resulting disagreement.

The central empirical exercise estimates a panel regression of trade-level profit on the absolute disagreement between the agent's probability estimate and the market price, controlling for agent identity, …

A Specification-Driven Framework For Self-Supervised Learning In Specialized Vision Domains, Mahmut S. Gokmen Jan 2026

A Specification-Driven Framework For Self-Supervised Learning In Specialized Vision Domains, Mahmut S. Gokmen

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Self-supervised learning (SSL) has emerged as a principled approach to visual representation learning that derives supervisory signal directly from unlabeled data, enabling foundation models to be trained at scale without manual annotation. Deployments in medical imaging and biometric recognition have demonstrated the potential of this paradigm, yet the assumptions that make SSL effective on natural image benchmarks fail systematically in specialized domains. Generic SSL pipelines encode a tacit assumption that the most informative correspondence is spatial proximity within a single acquisition. In specialized domains this assumption breaks at the level of the data-generating process: the signal that carries domain-specific information …

Error-Driven Density Control For Compact Gaussian Splatting Under Sparse Supervision, Abdelrhman Elrawy Jan 2026

Error-Driven Density Control For Compact Gaussian Splatting Under Sparse Supervision, Abdelrhman Elrawy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis studies efficiency and stability challenges in Gaussian-splatting-based reconstruction under sparse supervision. In few-shot novel view synthesis, standard 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) can overfit the limited training views and grow an unnecessarily large number of primitives due to limitations in its Adaptive Density Control (ADC) mechanism. This thesis introduces an error-driven reformulation of ADC that triggers densification using opacity gradients as a lightweight proxy for rendering error, and shows that such aggressive densification must be paired with delayed and conservative pruning to prevent destructive create--destroy cycles. When combined with depth-based geometric regularization, the resulting framework produces substantially more compact …

How Should Ai Talk About Us? Llms And Social Generics, Tiffany A. Zhu Jan 2026

How Should Ai Talk About Us? Llms And Social Generics, Tiffany A. Zhu

Philosophy Faculty Publications

How should AI-generated speech balance epistemic aims, such as precision and accuracy, with ethical and social considerations? This paper examines a subtle yet consequential aspect of LLM-driven communication: the use of generic generalizations that convey information about social groups (e.g., “immigrants work low-wage jobs”). While central to human epistemic and pedagogical practices, generics are theorized to reinforce stereotypes, essentialism, and injustice. Using ChatGPT-3.5 as a case study, I uncover tendencies for AI chatbots to inconsistently hedge and refuse generics, including those that reflect well-documented social structural patterns, such as “women are more likely to get attacked while walking alone at …

Distilling The Complexity Of Agent-Based Simulations Into Textual Explanations Via Large Language Models, Noé Y. Flandre, Philippe J. Giabbanelli Jan 2026

Distilling The Complexity Of Agent-Based Simulations Into Textual Explanations Via Large Language Models, Noé Y. Flandre, Philippe J. Giabbanelli

VMASC Publications

Communicating the design and results of agent-based models (ABMs) to subject matter experts is challenging, which hinders participation and limits trust in simulation-based decision support. Large language models (LLMs) can communicate ABMs as textual summaries, thus complementing traditional disclosure through statistical and visualization techniques. While prior work translated the structure of conceptual models into narratives via LLMs, our extension covers the dynamics of simulation models via an automated simulation-to-text method that extracts contextual information from NetLogo ABMs, performs repeated simulations, and generates narrative descriptions (including the model’s purpose, parameters, and simulation dynamics) using mutimodal LLMs. Furthermore, four summarization algorithms spanning …

Multi-Objective Optimization Of Energy Costs And Ev Battery Health In V2g Enabled Homes, Dzifa M. Hodey Jan 2026

Multi-Objective Optimization Of Energy Costs And Ev Battery Health In V2g Enabled Homes, Dzifa M. Hodey

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Electric vehicles (EVs) and rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are increasingly being integrated into residential settings, creating new opportunities for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) operations. In these systems, the EV battery functions as a controllable energy storage unit that can charge from the grid or PV and discharge energy to supply household load or export to the grid for a profit. By intelligently scheduling this bidirectional power exchange, households can reduce electricity costs and enhance PV utilization. Realizing these benefits requires optimization strategies that balance cost reduction with EV battery health preservation. However, existing V2G/V2H studies largely emphasize cost …

Toward Efficient And Scalable Scientific Data Management Through Quality-Oriented Data Compression, Pu Jiao Jan 2026

Toward Efficient And Scalable Scientific Data Management Through Quality-Oriented Data Compression, Pu Jiao

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Scientific simulations and instruments now produce data at rates that overwhelm the storage, memory, and network subsystems of modern high-performance computing (HPC) facilities. Error-bounded lossy compression reduces data movement costs while bounding reconstruction error, yet three barriers limit its adoption in mission-critical workflows: existing compressors cannot guarantee the accuracy of domain-specific quantities of interest (QoIs) derived from compressed data; compression-induced artifacts such as posterization, blocking, and interpolation banding erode user confidence in decompressed fields; and significant compressibility in the quantization index arrays of interpolation-based pipelines remains unexploited. This dissertation addresses all three barriers through four contributions, with the artifact barrier …

Beyond Full Fine-Tuning: The New Playbook For Adapting Deep Neural Networks, Cristian S. Mcgee Jan 2026

Beyond Full Fine-Tuning: The New Playbook For Adapting Deep Neural Networks, Cristian S. Mcgee

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Fine-tuning is the process of teaching and specializing a pre-trained neural network on a downstream task. Fine-tuning is a rapidly growing topic in artificial intelligence domains; however, many fine-tuning endeavors are highly specialized without a coherent framework connecting them. This work presents a unified perspective on fine-tuning methods and performance metrics. Our perspective organizes the methods in terms of how they are applied to fine-tuning. This framework showcases methods that (i) update effective subspaces of the pre-trained model, (ii) change the adaptation optimization procedure, and (iii) alter the representations of the embedded input. Additionally, we present unconventional metrics such as …
