The Fat-Pyramid And Universal Parallel Computation Independent Of Wire Delay, Ronald I. Greenberg Dec 1994

The Fat-Pyramid And Universal Parallel Computation Independent Of Wire Delay, Ronald I. Greenberg

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper shows that a fat-pyramid of area Θ(A) requires only O(log A) slowdown to simulate any competing network of area A under very general conditions. The result holds regardless of the processor size (amount of attached memory) and number of processors in the competing networks as long as the limitation on total area is met. Furthermore, the result is valid regardless of the relationship between wire length and wire delay. We especially focus on elimination of the common simplifying assumption that unit time suffices to traverse a wire regardless of its length, since the assumption becomes more and more …

Dynamic Task Scheduling For The Atamm Multicomputer Operating System Using Embedded Firmware On Microcontrollers, Sudhir Sastry Apr 1994

Dynamic Task Scheduling For The Atamm Multicomputer Operating System Using Embedded Firmware On Microcontrollers, Sudhir Sastry

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A dynamic task scheduling strategy for the distributed processing of large grain dataflow algorithms using embedded firmware on an ATAMM testbed consisting of interconnected microcontrollers is presented in this thesis. The ODU/NASA developed Algorithm to Architecture Mapping Model, ATAMM, uses marked graph models to specify data and control flow for the execution of iterative, deterministic large grain dataflow algorithms in a multicomputing environment. The testbed consists of a bank of four 68HC11 microcontrollers that communicate over a token bus. The token bus arbitration scheme used is contention free and well suited for real-time computing applications. The execution of data flow …

Parallel Algorithms For Single-Layer Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Shih-Chuan Hung, Jau-Der Shih Dec 1993

Parallel Algorithms For Single-Layer Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Shih-Chuan Hung, Jau-Der Shih

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We provide efficient parallel algorithms for the minimum separation, offset range, and optimal offset problems for single-layer channel routing. We consider all the variations of these problems that have linear-time sequential solutions rather than limiting attention to the ``river-routing'' context, where single-sided connections are disallowed. For the minimum separation problem, we obtain O(lgN) time on a CREW PRAM or O(lgN/lglgN) time on a CRCW PRAM, both with optimal work (processor-time product) of O(N), where N is the number of terminals. For the offset range problem, we obtain the same time and processor bounds as long as only one side of …

Feasible Offset And Optimal Offset For Single-Layer Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih Jun 1993

Feasible Offset And Optimal Offset For Single-Layer Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The paper provides an efficient method to find all feasible offsets for a given separation in a VLSI channel routing problem in one layer. The prior literature considers this task only for problems with no single-sided nets. When single-sided nets are included, the worst-case solution time increases from Theta(n) to Omega(n^2), where n is the number of nets. But, if the number of columns c is O(n), one can solve the problem in time O(n^{1.5}lg n ), which improves upon a `naive' O(cn) approach. As a corollary of this result, the same time bound suffices to find the optimal offset …

Minimizing Channel Density With Movable Terminals, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih Mar 1993

Minimizing Channel Density With Movable Terminals, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We give algorithms to minimize density for channels with terminals that are movable subject to certain constraints. The main cases considered are channels with linear order constraints, channels with linear order constraints and separation constraints, channels with movable modules containing fixed terminals, and channels with movable modules and terminals. In each case, previous results for running time and space are improved by a factor of L/lg n and L , respectively, where L is the channel length and n is the number of terminals.

On The Difficulty Of Manhattan Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Joseph Jaja, Sridhar Krishnamurthy Dec 1992

On The Difficulty Of Manhattan Channel Routing, Ronald I. Greenberg, Joseph Jaja, Sridhar Krishnamurthy

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We show that channel routing in the Manhattan model remains difficult even when all nets are single-sided. Given a set of n single-sided nets, we consider the problem of determining the minimum number of tracks required to obtain a dogleg-free routing. In addition to showing that the decision version of the problem isNP-complete, we show that there are problems requiring at least d+Omega(sqrt(n)) tracks, where d is the density. This existential lower bound does not follow from any of the known lower bounds in the literature.

Autonomous Face Segmentation, Kevin P. Gay Sep 1992

Autonomous Face Segmentation, Kevin P. Gay

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to implement an autonomous face segmentor as the front end to a face recognition system on a Sun SPARCStation2. Face recognition performance criteria, specifically, the capabilities to isolate and resize faces in an image to a consistent scale, were analyzed to determine current practical limitations. Face images were acquired using a S-VHS camcorder. Segmentation was accomplished using motion detection and predefined rules. Tests were run to determine the suitable of the autonomous segmentor as the front-end to a face recognition system. The segmentation system developed consistently located faces and rescaled those faces to a …

Formant Estimation From Dctc's Using A Feedforward Neural Network, Shubhangi U. Kelkar Apr 1992

Formant Estimation From Dctc's Using A Feedforward Neural Network, Shubhangi U. Kelkar

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Formants are the natural frequencies of the human vocal tract. Existing methods for estimating formants from speech signals are computationally complex and subject to errors for certain type of speech sounds. This thesis describes a method for estimating vowel formant frequencies from Discrete Cosine Transform Coefficients (DCTC's), a form of cepstral coefficients, using a feedforward neural network with back-propagation training. Experimental results are based on a large multispeaker data base. The results are obtained for both a linear transformation and a feedforward neural network with a nonlinear hidden layer. In general, the neural network transformation is superior to the linear …

Finding A Maximum-Density Planar Subset Of A Set Of Nets In A Channel, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih Feb 1992

Finding A Maximum-Density Planar Subset Of A Set Of Nets In A Channel, Ronald I. Greenberg, Jau-Der Shih

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We present efficient algorithms to find a maximum-density planar subset of n 2-pin nets in a channel. The simplest approach is to make repeated usage of Supowit's dynamic programming algorithm for finding a maximum-size planar subset, which leads to O(n^3) time to find a maximum-density planar subset. But we also provide an algorithm whose running time is dependent on other problem parameters and is often more efficient. A simple bound on the running time of this algorithm is O(nlgn+n(t+1)w), where t is the number of two-sided nets, and w is the number of nets in the output. Though the worst-case …

Face Recognition With The Karhunen-Loeve Transform, Pedro F. Suarez Dec 1991

Face Recognition With The Karhunen-Loeve Transform, Pedro F. Suarez

Theses and Dissertations

The major goal of this research was to investigate machine recognition of faces. The approach taken to achieve this goal was to investigate the use of Karhunen-Loe've Transform (KLT) by implementing flexible and practical code. The KLT utilizes the eigenvectors of the covariance matrix as a basis set. Faces were projected onto the eigenvectors, called eigenfaces, and the resulting projection coefficients were used as features. Face recognition accuracies for the KLT coefficients were superior to Fourier based techniques. Additionally, this thesis demonstrated the image compression and reconstruction capabilities of the KLT. This theses also developed the use of the KLT …

Encoding Phonetic Knowledge For Use In Hidden Markov Models Of Speech Recognition, Danming Qian Jul 1990

Encoding Phonetic Knowledge For Use In Hidden Markov Models Of Speech Recognition, Danming Qian

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Hidden Markov models (HMM's) have achieved considerable success for isolated-word speaker-independent automatic speech recognition. However, the performance of an HMM algorithm is limited by its inability to discriminate between similar sounding words. The problem arises because all differences between speech patterns are treated as equally important. Thus the algorithm is particularly susceptible to confusions caused by phonetically-irrelevant differences. This thesis presents two types of preprocessing schemes as candidates for improving HMM performance. The aim is to maximize the differences between phonologically-distinct speech sounds while minimizing the effect of variations in phonologically-equivalent speech sounds. The preprocessors presented are a discrete cosine …

Efficient Interconnection Schemes For Vlsi And Parallel Computation, Ronald I. Greenberg Sep 1989

Efficient Interconnection Schemes For Vlsi And Parallel Computation, Ronald I. Greenberg

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This thesis is primarily concerned with two problems of interconnecting components in VLSI technologies. In the first case, the goal is to construct efficient interconnection networks for general-purpose parallel computers. The second problem is a more specialized problem in the design of VLSI chips, namely multilayer channel routing. In addition, a final part of this thesis provides lower bounds on the area required for VLSI implementations of finite-state machines. This thesis shows that networks based on Leiserson's fat-tree architecture are nearly as good as any network built in a comparable amount of physical space. It shows that these "universal" networks …

Randomized Routing On Fat-Trees, Ronald I. Greenberg, Charles E. Leiserson Jan 1989

Randomized Routing On Fat-Trees, Ronald I. Greenberg, Charles E. Leiserson

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Fat-trees are a class of routing networks for hardware-efficient parallel computation. This paper presents a randomized algorithm for routing messages on a fat-tree. The quality of the algorithm is measured in terms of the load factor of a set of messages to be routed, which is a lower bound on the time required to deliver the messages. We show that if a set of messages has load factor lambda on a fat-tree with n processors, the number of delivery cycles (routing attempts) that the algorithm requires is O(lambda + lg n lg lg n) with probability 1-O(1/n). The best previous …

Lower Bounds On The Area Of Finite-State Machines, M. J. Foster, Ronald I. Greenberg Jan 1989

Lower Bounds On The Area Of Finite-State Machines, M. J. Foster, Ronald I. Greenberg

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

There are certain straightforward algorithms for laying out finite-state machines. This paper shows that these algorithm are optimal in the worst case for machines with fixed alphabets. That is, for any s and k, there is a deterministic finite-state machine with s states and k symbols such that any layout algorithm requires Ω(ks log s) area to lay out its realization. Similarly, any layout algorithm requires Ω(ks^2) area in the worst case for nondeterministic finite-state machines with s states and k symbols.

Wind Streamline Ambiguity Removal Of Microwave Scatterometer Data, Hans W. Zaepfel Oct 1986

Wind Streamline Ambiguity Removal Of Microwave Scatterometer Data, Hans W. Zaepfel

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

There is a class of satellite microwave scatterometers that return oceanographic information which includes wind vectors with directional ambiguity. The first part of the ambiguity removal process is to reduce the data to a directional ambiguity of 180°. This thesis shows that wind direction change contains the information required for streamline ambiguity removal and that syntactic pattern recognition techniques can be used to locate the areas of wind direction change. Spreading the information along the areas of wind direction change results in the removal of the streamline ambiguity. The algorithm is implemented and the results are presented showing that it …

High Performance Switching Circuits For Vlsi, Ali Reza Feizi Oct 1985

High Performance Switching Circuits For Vlsi, Ali Reza Feizi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Interconnection topology and device performance are of major concern in the design of LSI/VLSI systems, Pass networks are very suitable in this regard because of low power consumption, high density, and simple interconnection topology. A special type of pass networks called Binary Tree Structured (BTS) pass networks uses almost minimum number of transistors for the design of switching circuits. An algorithmic procedure is developed here for BTS pass networks which is very efficient in terms of both execution time and memory space. Based on these networks, the necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the design of multiple-output pass networks. …

Design Of Infrasound-Detection System Via Adaptive Lmstde Algorithm, Camille S. Khalaf Oct 1984

Design Of Infrasound-Detection System Via Adaptive Lmstde Algorithm, Camille S. Khalaf

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A proposed solution to an aviation safety problem is based on passive detection of turbulent weather phenomena through their infrasonic emission. This thesis describes a system design that is adequate for detection and bearing evaluation of infrasounds. An array of four sensors, with the appropriate hardware, is used for the detection part. Bearing evaluation is based on estimates of time delays between sensor outputs. The generalized cross correlation (GCC), as the conventional time-delay estimation (TOE) method, is first reviewed. An adaptive TUt approach, using the least mean square (LMS) algorithm, is then discussed. A comparison between the two techniques is …

A Dimensionality Reduction Algorithm For The Karhunen Loeve Transform, Salomi T. Charalambous Apr 1980

A Dimensionality Reduction Algorithm For The Karhunen Loeve Transform, Salomi T. Charalambous

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Karhunen Loeve Transform has conclusively been shown to be the optimum data compression algorithm for signals belonging to the same second order stationary process. Consequently, researchers have been searching for a fast implementation for the transform. Fast implementation methods similar to those developed for other orthogonal transforms are generally not applicable to the Karhunen Loeve Transform (KLT). Also, since the basis vectors composing the transformation matrix of the KLT are the eigenvectors of the covariance matrix of the input process, they must be computed first. The research re ported here is an attempt to reduce the dimensionality of the …

An Efficient Dft Algorithm Using The Walsh Transform, Albert P. Gerheim Apr 1976

An Efficient Dft Algorithm Using The Walsh Transform, Albert P. Gerheim

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The matrix transformation relating the sequency and frequency domains is derived. It is shown that these frequency-to-frequency conversion can be performed via a computationally efficient sparse matrix algorithm. The sequency-to-frequency algorithm can be used with a fast Hadamard transform to implement a discrete Fourier trans form. The efficiencies of this combined algorithm and a radix-two fast Fourier transform are compared.

The algorithm is applied to the sequency domain de sign of a Wiener digital filter. Improved computational efficiencies are achieved relative to the procedure developed by Kahveci and Hall (9).
