Feature Engineering For Machine Learning And Data Analytics, Xin Xia, David Lo Apr 2018

Feature Engineering For Machine Learning And Data Analytics, Xin Xia, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This chapter provides an introduction on feature generation and engineering for software analytics. Specifically, we show how domain-specifc features can be designed and used to automate three software engineering tasks: (1) detecting defective software modules (defect prediction), (2) identifying crashing mobile app release (crash release prediction), and (3) predicting who will leave a software team (developer turnover prediction). For each of the three tasks, different sets of features are extracted from a diverse set of software artifacts, and used to build predictive models.

Entagrec(++): An Enhanced Tag Recommendation System For Software Information Sites, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Bogdan Vasilescu, Alexander Serebrenik

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software engineers share experiences with modern technologies by means of software information sites, such as Stack Overflow. These sites allow developers to label posted content, referred to as software objects, with short descriptions, known as tags. However, tags assigned to objects tend to be noisy and some objects are not well tagged. To improve the quality of tags in software information sites, we propose EnTagRec, an automatic tag recommender based on historical tag assignments to software objects and we evaluate its performance on four software information sites, Stack Overflow, Ask Ubuntu, Ask Different, and Free code. We observe that that …

The Impact Of Rapid Release Cycles On The Integration Delay Of Fixed Issues, Daniel Alencar Da Costa, Shane Mcintosh, Christoph Treude, Uirá Kulesza, Ahmed E. Hassan Apr 2018

The Impact Of Rapid Release Cycles On The Integration Delay Of Fixed Issues, Daniel Alencar Da Costa, Shane Mcintosh, Christoph Treude, Uirá Kulesza, Ahmed E. Hassan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The release frequency of software projects has increased in recent years. Adopters of so-called rapid releases—short release cycles, often on the order of weeks, days, or even hours—claim that they can deliver fixed issues (i.e., implemented bug fixes and new features) to users more quickly. However, there is little empirical evidence to support these claims. In fact, our prior work shows that code integration phases may introduce delays for rapidly releasing projects—98% of the fixed issues in the rapidly releasing Firefox project had their integration delayed by at least one release. To better understand the impact that rapid release cycles …

Can Multimodal Sensing Detect And Localize Transient Events?, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Subbaraju Vigneshwaran, Noel Athaide, Lakmal Meeghapola, Andrew Tan, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the increased focus on making cities "smarter", we see an upsurge in investment in sensing technologies embedded in the urban infrastructure. The deployment of GPS sensors aboard taxis and buses, smartcards replacing paper tickets, and other similar initiatives have led to an abundance of data on human mobility, generated at scale and available real-time. Further still, users of social media platforms such as Twitter and LBSNs continue to voluntarily share multimedia content revealing in-situ information on their respective localities. The availability of such longitudinal multimodal data not only allows for both the characterization of the dynamics of the city, …

Entagrec(++): An Enhanced Tag Recommendation System For Software Information Sites, Shawei Wang, David Lo, Bogdan Vasilescu, Alexander Serebrenik

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software engineers share experiences with modern technologies using software information sites, such as Stack Overflow. These sites allow developers to label posted content, referred to as software objects, with short descriptions, known as tags. Tags help to improve the organization of questions and simplify the browsing of questions for users. However, tags assigned to objects tend to be noisy and some objects are not well tagged. For instance, 14.7% of the questions that were posted in 2015 on Stack Overflow needed tag re-editing after the initial assignment. To improve the quality of tags in software information sites, we propose EnTagRec …

Combined Classifier For Cross-Project Defect Prediction: An Extended Empirical Study, Yun Zhang, David Lo, Xin Xia, Jianling Sun Apr 2018

Combined Classifier For Cross-Project Defect Prediction: An Extended Empirical Study, Yun Zhang, David Lo, Xin Xia, Jianling Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To facilitate developers in effective allocation of their testing and debugging efforts, many software defect prediction techniques have been proposed in the literature. These techniques can be used to predict classes that are more likely to be buggy based on the past history of classes, methods, or certain other code elements. These techniques are effective provided that a sufficient amount of data is available to train a prediction model. However, sufficient training data are rarely available for new software projects. To resolve this problem, cross-project defect prediction, which transfers a prediction model trained using data from one project to another, …

Predicting Episodes Of Non-Conformant Mobility In Indoor Environments, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Archan Misra Apr 2018

Predicting Episodes Of Non-Conformant Mobility In Indoor Environments, Kasthuri Jayarajah, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional mobility prediction literature focuses primarily on improved methods to extract latent patterns from individual-specific movement data. When such predictions are incorrect, we ascribe it to 'random' or 'unpredictable' changes in a user's movement behavior. Our hypothesis, however, is that such apparently-random deviations from daily movement patterns can, in fact, of ten be anticipated. In particular, we develop a methodology for predicting Likelihood of Future Non-Conformance (LFNC), based on two central hypotheses: (a) the likelihood of future deviations in movement behavior is positively correlated to the intensity of such trajectory deviations observed in the user's recent past, and (b) the …

Frame Inference For Inductive Entailment Proofs In Separation Logic, Quang Loc Le, Jun Sun, Shengchao Qin Apr 2018

Frame Inference For Inductive Entailment Proofs In Separation Logic, Quang Loc Le, Jun Sun, Shengchao Qin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given separation logic formulae A and C, frame inference is the problem of checking whether A entails C and simultaneously inferring residual heaps. Existing approaches on frame inference do not support inductive proofs with general inductive predicates. In this work, we present an automatic frame inference approach for an expressive fragment of separation logic. We further show how to strengthen the inferred frame through predicate normalization and arithmetic inference. We have integrated our approach into an existing verification system. The experimental results show that our approach helps to establish a number of non-trivial inductive proofs which are beyond the capability …

Latency-Oriented Task Completion Via Spatial Crowdsourcing, Yuxiang Zeng, Yongxin Tong, Lei Chen, Zimu Zhou Apr 2018

Latency-Oriented Task Completion Via Spatial Crowdsourcing, Yuxiang Zeng, Yongxin Tong, Lei Chen, Zimu Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Spatial crowdsourcing brings in a new approach for social media and location-based services (LBS) to collect locationspecific information via mobile users. For example, when a user checks in at a shop on Facebook, he will immediately receive and is asked to complete a set of tasks such as “what is the opening hour of the shop”. It is non-trivial to complete a set of tasks timely and accurately via spatial crowdsourcing. Since workers in spatial crowdsourcing are often transient and limited in number, these social media platforms need to properly allocate workers within the set of tasks such that all …

Automated Man-In-The-Middle Attack Against Wi‑Fi Networks, Martin Vondráček, Jan Pluskal, Ondřej Ryšavý

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Currently used wireless communication technologies suffer security weaknesses that can be exploited allowing to eavesdrop or to spoof network communication. In this paper, we present a practical tool that can automate the attack on wireless security. The developed package called wifimitm provides functionality for the automation of MitM attacks in the wireless environment. The package combines several existing tools and attack strategies to bypass the wireless security mechanisms, such as WEP, WPA, and WPS. The presented tool can be integrated into a solution for automated penetration testing. Also, a popularization of the fact that such attacks can be easily automated …

Publications and Research

The Java 8 Stream API sets forth a promising new programming model that incorporates functional-like, MapReduce-style features into a mainstream programming language. However, using streams correctly and efficiently may involve subtle considerations. In this poster, we present our ongoing work and preliminary results to- wards an automated refactoring approach that assists developers in writing optimal stream code. The approach, based on ordering and typestate analysis, determines when it is safe and advantageous to convert streams to parallel and optimize a parallel streams.

Progressive Network Deployment, Performance, And Control With Software-Defined Networking, Daniel J. Casey Mar 2018

Progressive Network Deployment, Performance, And Control With Software-Defined Networking, Daniel J. Casey

Theses and Dissertations

The inflexible nature of traditional computer networks has led to tightly-integrated systems that are inherently difficult to manage and secure. New designs move low-level network control into software creating software-defined networks (SDN). Augmenting an existing network with these enhancements can be expensive and complex. This research investigates solutions to these problems. It is hypothesized that an add-on device, or "shim" could be used to make a traditional switch behave as an OpenFlow SDN switch while maintaining reasonable performance. A design prototype is found to cause approximately 1.5% reduction in throughput for one ow and less than double increase in latency, …

An Analysis Of Multi-Domain Command And Control And The Development Of Software Solutions Through Devops Toolsets And Practices, Mason R. Bruza

Theses and Dissertations

Multi-Domain Command and Control (MDC2) is the exercise of command and control over forces in multiple operational domains (namely air, land, sea, space, and cyberspace) in order to produce synergistic effects in the battlespace, and enhancing this capability has become a major focus area for the United States Air Force (USAF). In order to meet demands for MDC2 software, solutions need to be acquired and/or developed in a timely manner, information technology infrastructure needs to be adaptable to new software requirements, and user feedback needs to drive iterative updates to fielded software. In commercial organizations, agile software development methodologies and …

Quality Of Service Impacts Of A Moving Target Defense With Software-Defined Networking, Samuel A. Mayer Mar 2018

Quality Of Service Impacts Of A Moving Target Defense With Software-Defined Networking, Samuel A. Mayer

Theses and Dissertations

An analysis of the impact a defensive network technique implemented with software-defined networking has upon quality of service experienced by legitimate users. The research validates previous work conducted at AFIT to verify claims of defensive efficacy and then tests network protocols in common use (FTP, HTTP, IMAP, POP, RTP, SMTP, and SSH) on a network that uses this technique. Metrics that indicate the performance of the protocols under test are reported with respect to data gathered in a control network. The conclusions of these experiments enable network engineers to determine if this defensive technique is appropriate for the quality of …

Crowdservice: Optimizing Mobile Crowdsourcing And Service Composition, Xin Peng, Jingxiao Gu, Tian Huat Tan, Jun Sun, Yijun Yu, Bashar Nuseibeh, Wenyun Zhao Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Some user needs can only be met by leveraging the capabilities of others to undertake particular tasks that require intelligence and labor. Crowdsourcing such capabilities is one way to achieve this. But providing a service that leverages crowd intelligence and labor is a challenge, since various factors need to be considered to enable reliable service provisioning. For example, the selection of an optimal set of workers from those who bid to perform a task needs to be made based on their reliability, expected reward, and distance to the target locations. Moreover, for an application involving multiple services, the overall cost …

An Empirical Study Of Css Code Smells In Web Frameworks, Tobias Paul Bleisch Mar 2018

An Empirical Study Of Css Code Smells In Web Frameworks, Tobias Paul Bleisch

Master's Theses

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) has become essential to front-end web development for the specification of style. But despite its simple syntax and the theoretical advantages attained through the separation of style from content and behavior, CSS authoring today is regarded as a complex task. As a result, developers are increasingly turning to CSS preprocessor languages and web frameworks to aid in development. However, previous studies show that even highly popular websites which are known to be developed with web frameworks contain CSS code smells such as duplicated rules and hard-coded values. Such code smells have the potential to cause adverse …

Obfuscation At-Source: Privacy In Context-Aware Mobile Crowd-Sourcing, Thivya Kandappu, Archan Misra, Shih-Fen Cheng, Randy Tandriansyah, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

By effectively reaching out to and engaging larger population of mobile users, mobile crowd-sourcing has become a strategy to perform large amount of urban tasks. The recent empirical studies have shown that compared to the pull-based approach, which expects the users to browse through the list of tasks to perform, the push-based approach that actively recommends tasks can greatly improve the overall system performance. As the efficiency of the push-based approach is achieved by incorporating worker's mobility traces, privacy is naturally a concern. In this paper, we propose a novel, 2-stage and user-controlled obfuscation technique that provides a trade off-amenable …

Engagemon: Multi-Modal Engagement Sensing For Mobile Games, Sinh Huynh, Seungmin Kim, Jeonggil Ko, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Youngki Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Understanding the engagement levels players have with a game is a useful proxy for evaluating the game design and user experience. This is particularly important for mobile games as an alternative game is always just an easy download away. However, engagement is a subjective concept and usually requires fine-grained highly disruptive interviews or surveys to determine accurately. In this paper, we present EngageMon, a first-of-its-kind system that uses a combination of sensors from the smartphone (touch events), a wristband (photoplethysmography and electrodermal activity sensor readings), and an external depth camera (skeletal motion information) to accurately determine the engagement level of …

Visualizing Research Impact Through Citation Data, Yong Wang, Conglei Shi, Liangyue Li, Hanghang Tong, Huamin Qu Mar 2018

Visualizing Research Impact Through Citation Data, Yong Wang, Conglei Shi, Liangyue Li, Hanghang Tong, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Research impact plays a critical role in evaluating the research quality and influence of a scholar, a journal, or a conference. Many researchers have attempted to quantify research impact by introducing different types of metrics based on citation data, such as h-index, citation count, and impact factor. These metrics are widely used in the academic community. However, quantitative metrics are highly aggregated in most cases and sometimes biased, which probably results in the loss of impact details that are important for comprehensively understanding research impact. For example, which research area does a researcher have great research impact on? How does …

W-Air: Enabling Personal Air Pollution Monitoring On Wearables, Balz Maag, Zimu Zhou, Lothar Thiele Mar 2018

W-Air: Enabling Personal Air Pollution Monitoring On Wearables, Balz Maag, Zimu Zhou, Lothar Thiele

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Accurate, portable and personal air pollution sensing devices enable quantification of individual exposure to air pollution, personalized health advice and assistance applications. Wearables are promising (e.g., on wristbands, attached to belts or backpacks) to integrate commercial off-the-shelf gas sensors for personal air pollution sensing. Yet previous research lacks comprehensive investigations on the accuracies of air pollution sensing on wearables. In response, we proposed W-Air, an accurate personal multi-pollutant monitoring platform for wearables. We discovered that human emissions introduce non-linear interference when low-cost gas sensors are integrated into wearables, which is overlooked in existing studies. W-Air adopts a sensor-fusion calibration scheme …

A New Revocable And Re-Delegable Proxy Signature And Its Application, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu Mar 2018

A New Revocable And Re-Delegable Proxy Signature And Its Application, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the popularity of cloud computing and mobile Apps, on-demand services such as on-line music or audio streaming and vehicle booking are widely available nowadays. In order to allow efficient delivery and management of the services, for large-scale on-demand systems, there is usually a hierarchy where the service provider can delegate its service to a top-tier (e.g., countrywide) proxy who can then further delegate the service to lower level (e.g., region-wide) proxies. Secure (re-)delegation and revocation are among the most crucial factors for such systems. In this paper, we investigate the practical solutions for achieving re-delegation and revocation utilizing proxy …

A Call To Promote Soft Skills In Software Engineering, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Fahem Ahmed Feb 2018

A Call To Promote Soft Skills In Software Engineering, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Fahem Ahmed

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

We have been thinking about other aspects of software engineering for many years; the missing link in engineering software is the soft skills set, essential in the software development process. Although soft skills are among the most important aspects in the creation of software, they are often overlooked by educators and practitioners. One of the main reasons for the oversight is that soft skills are usually related to social and personality factors, i.e., teamwork, motivation, commitment, leadership, multi-culturalism, emotions, interpersonal skills, etc. This editorial is a manifesto declaring the importance of soft skills in software engineering with the intention to …

Identifying Self-Admitted Technical Debt In Open Source Projects Using Text Mining, Qiao Huang, Emad Shihab, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li Feb 2018

Identifying Self-Admitted Technical Debt In Open Source Projects Using Text Mining, Qiao Huang, Emad Shihab, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Technical debt is a metaphor to describe the situation in which long-term code quality is traded for short-term goals in software projects. Recently, the concept of self-admitted technical debt (SATD) was proposed, which considers debt that is intentionally introduced, e.g., in the form of quick or temporary fixes. Prior work on SATD has shown that source code comments can be used to successfully detect SATD, however, most current state-of-the-art classification approaches of SATD rely on manual inspection of the source code comments. In this paper, we proposed an automated approach to detect SATD in source code comments using text mining. …

Early Detection Of Mild Cognitive Impairment In Elderly Through Iot: Preliminary Findings, Hwee-Xian Tan, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) results in the gradual decline in a person’s cognitive abilities, and subsequently an increased risk of developing dementia. Although there is no cure for dementia, timely medical and clinical interventions can be administered to elderly who have been diagnosed with MCI, to decelerate the process of further cognitive decline and prolong the duration that they enjoy quality of life. In this paper, we present our preliminary findings of early detection of MCI in elderly who are living in the community, through the use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices for continuous, unobtrusive sensing. Multimodal sensors are …

Vt-Revolution: Interactive Programming Video Tutorial Authoring And Watching System, Lingfeng Bao, Zhenchang Xing, Xin Xia, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Procedural knowledge describes actions and manipulations that are carried out to complete programming tasks. An effective way to document procedural knowledge is programming video tutorials. Existing solutions to adding interactive workflow and elements to programming videos have a dilemma between the level of desired interaction and the efforts required for authoring tutorials. In this work, we tackle this dilemma by designing and building a programming video tutorial authoring system that leverages operating system level instrumentation to log workflow history while tutorial authors are creating programming videos, and the corresponding tutorial watching system that enhances the learning experience of video tutorials …

Cross-Language Learning For Program Classification Using Bilateral Tree-Based Convolutional Neural Networks, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui, Lingxiao Jiang, Yijun Yu Feb 2018

Cross-Language Learning For Program Classification Using Bilateral Tree-Based Convolutional Neural Networks, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui, Lingxiao Jiang, Yijun Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Towards the vision of translating code that implements an algorithm from one programming language into another, this paper proposes an approach for automated program classification using bilateral tree-based convolutional neural networks (BiTBCNNs). It is layered on top of two tree-based convolutional neural networks (TBCNNs), each of which recognizes the algorithm of code written in an individual programming language. The combination layer of the networks recognizes the similarities and differences among code in different programming languages. The BiTBCNNs are trained using the source code in different languages but known to implement the same algorithms and/or functionalities. For a preliminary evaluation, we …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The prevalent usage of runtime packers has complicated Android malware analysis, as both legitimate and malicious apps are leveraging packing mechanisms to protect themselves against reverse engineer. Although recent efforts have been made to analyze particular packing techniques, little has been done to study the unique characteristics of Android packers. In this paper, we report the first systematic study on mainstream Android packers, in an attempt to understand their security implications. For this purpose, we developed DROIDUNPACK, a whole-system emulation based Android packing analysis framework, which compared with existing tools, relies on intrinsic characteristics of Android runtime (rather than heuristics), …
