Tool Support For Model Based Architectural Design For Automotive Control Systems, Kevin Steppe
Tool Support For Model Based Architectural Design For Automotive Control Systems, Kevin Steppe
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In conjunction with Ford Motor Company, we built a tool to support multilevel architectural design. The tool, called Synergy, allows Ford to visually design architectures of vehicle control components. The components are imported from existing Simulink models; then the tool automatically generates a detailed view showing all required connections and ports. The resulting model is exported to Simulink for further analysis. In this paper we describe the conceptual and technical challenges encountered in building Synergy and our design choices for solving them.
A Modeling Framework For Computing Lifetime And Information Capacity In Wireless Sensor Networks, Enrique Duarte-Melo, Mingyan Liu, Archan Misra
A Modeling Framework For Computing Lifetime And Information Capacity In Wireless Sensor Networks, Enrique Duarte-Melo, Mingyan Liu, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper we investigate the expected lifetime and information capacity, defined as the maximum amount of data (bits) transferred before the first sensor node death due to energy depletion, of a data-gathering wireless sensor network. We develop a fluidflow based computational framework that extends the existing approach, which requires precise knowledge of the layout/deployment of the network, i.e., exact sensor positions. Our method, on the other hand, views a specific network deployment as a particular instance (sample path) from an underlying distribution of sensor node layouts and sensor data rates.

An attractive approach to architecture-based design is to structure the development process into two tiers. The top tier represents the abstract design (or architecture) of a system in terms of abstract components. The bottom tier refines that design by making specific implementation decisions, such as platform, middleware, and component implementations. While attractive in principle, there has been relatively little industrial-based experience to shed light on problems and solutions involved in such an approach. In this paper we describe our experience in developing tools to introduce a two-tiered model-based approach to the design of Ford Motor Company’s automotive control systems, highlighting …

A Paradigm For Spreadsheet Engineering Methodologies, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk
A Paradigm For Spreadsheet Engineering Methodologies, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk
Business Analytics and Information Systems
Spreadsheet engineering methodologies are diverse and sometimes contradictory. It is difficult for spreadsheet developers to identify a spreadsheet engineering methodology that is appropriate for their class of spreadsheet, with its unique combination of goals, type of problem, and available time and resources. There is a lack of well-organized, proven methodologies with known costs and benefits for well-defined spreadsheet classes. It is difficult to compare and critically evaluate methodologies. We present a paradigm for organizing and interpreting spreadsheet engineering recommendations. It systematically addresses the myriad choices made when developing a spreadsheet, and explicitly considers resource constraints and other development parameters. This …

There is a growing interest in adopting object technologies for the development of real-time control systems. Several commercial tools, currently available, provide object-oriented modeling and design support for real-time control systems. While these products provide many useful facilities, such as visualization tools and automatic code generation, they are all weak in addressing the central characteristic of real-time control systems design, i.e., providing support for a designer to reason about timeliness properties. We believe an approach that integrates the advancements in both object modeling and design methods and real-time scheduling theory is the key to successful use of object technology for …

From Microsoft's viewpoint, migration to the new platform requires a radical shift in the software development lifecycle. It is becoming …
A Toolkit For Xml-Based And Process-Oriented Application Integration, Volker Münch
A Toolkit For Xml-Based And Process-Oriented Application Integration, Volker Münch
Theses
Systems integration is hard work; different architectures with different interfaces and an innumerable amount of Legacy applications with non-standard interfaces exist. However the needs to meet changing business requirements and to implement faster and optimised procedures within an enterprise and in cooperation with other external enterprises mean that there is a continuing demand for such integration strategies and products. Integration was often an activity separate from system development and could not be accomplished without re-involving system designers and developers. Such a process is therefore inefficient and costly. This thesis proposes a process-oriented integration strategy that combines the tasks of integration …

A Test Suite Generator For Struts Based Applications, Gregory M. Jackson
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Testing web-based enterprise applications requires the use of automated testing frameworks. The testing framework's ability to run suites of test cases through development ensures enhancements work as required and have not caused defects in previously developed sub systems. Open source testing frameworks like JUnit and Cactus have addressed the requirements to test web-based enterprise applications, however they do not address the generation of test cases based on direct analysis of the code under test.
This paper presents a tool to generate test cases for web-based enterprise applications. The generator focuses on creating test cases used to test applications built on …
A Software Architecture For Reconstructability Analysis, Kenneth Willett, Martin Zwick
A Software Architecture For Reconstructability Analysis, Kenneth Willett, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Software packages for reconstructability analysis (RA), as well as for related log linear modeling, generally provide a fixed set of functions. Such packages are suitable for end‐users applying RA in various domains, but do not provide a platform for research into the RA methods themselves. A new software system, Occam3, is being developed which is intended to address three goals which often conflict with one another to provide: a general and flexible infrastructure for experimentation with RA methods and algorithms; an easily‐configured system allowing methods to be combined in novel ways, without requiring deep software expertise; and a system which …

Evaluation Of An Esperanto-Based Interlingua Multilingual Survey Form Machine Translation Mechanism Incorporating A Sublanguage Translation Methodolgy, Richard Boddington
Theses : Honours
Translation costs restrict the preparation of medical survey and other questionnaires for migrant communities in Western Australia. This restriction is compounded by a lack of affordable and accurate machine translation mechanisms. This research investigated and evaluated combined strategies intended to provide an efficacious and affordable machine translator by: • using an interlingua or pivot-language that requires less resources for its construction than contemporary systems and has the additional benefit of significant error reduction; and • defining smaller lexical environments to restrict data, thereby reducing the complexity of translation rules and enhancing correct semantic transfer between natural languages. This research focussed …

Developing Software For Wound Measurement, Savo Kordic
Theses : Honours
Chronic wounds such as leg ulcers, pressure ulcers and diabetic ulcers affect many thousands of people in Australia. In addition to the costs of these wounds in terms of human suffering, loss of income and resources, there are costs related to the treatment of ulcers. Thus, there is a genuine need to develop an accurate and a fully objective application for wound measurement. The aim of this project was to create software for the measurement of wounds. In achieving this goal, several issues were addressed: an accurate measurement method capable of detecting small changes in an open wound surface area, …
Powerful Change Part 2: Reducing The Power Demands Of Mobile Devices, Rajesh Krishna Balan
Powerful Change Part 2: Reducing The Power Demands Of Mobile Devices, Rajesh Krishna Balan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Consumers expect their mobile devices to be small and light, have a decent battery lifetime, and still be powerful enough to run all their desired applications. The need to satisfy such consumer demands has driven mobile-device manufacturers to make products (such as PDAs and cell phones) that match these needs. However, this inevitably requires tradeoffs. Building smaller, lighter devices requires sacrificing the device's battery capacity because battery technology is still fairly dense and heavy, and contributes most of a mobile device's size and weight. But, mobile devices with the required resources to run useful desktop applications need additional battery power …
