A critical factor for the commercial success of mobile and task-specific devices is the fast turnaround time of software development. However, developing software for mobile devices is especially hard since applications need to be aware of and adapt to changing resources such as bandwidth and battery.

Predicting Bottleneck Bandwidth Sharing By Generalized Tcp Flows, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras Nov 2002

Predicting Bottleneck Bandwidth Sharing By Generalized Tcp Flows, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The paper presents a technique for computing the individual throughputs and the average queue occupancy when multiple TCP connections share a single bottleneck buffer. The bottleneck buffer is assumed to perform congestion feedback via randomized packet marking or drops. We first present a fixed point-based analytical technique to compute the mean congestion window sizes, the mean queue occupancy and the individual throughputs when the TCP flows perform idealized congestion avoidance. We subsequently extend the technique to analyze the case where TCP flows perform generalized congestion avoidance and demonstrate the use of this technique under the Assured Service model, where each …

The Capacity Of Multi-Hop Wireless Networks With Tcp Regulated Traffic, Sorav Bansal, Rajeev Shorey, Shobhit Chugh, Anurag Goel, Kapil Kumar, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study the dependence of the capacity of multi-hop wireless networks on the transmission range of nodes in the network with TCP regulated traffic. Specifically, we examine the sensitivity of the capacity to the speed of the nodes and the number of TCP connections in an ad hoc network. By incorporating the notion of a minimal acceptable QoS metric (loss) for an individual session, we argue that the QoS-aware capacity is a more accurate model of the TCP-centric capacity of an ad-hoc network. We study the dependence of capacity on the source application (Telnet or FTP) and on the choice …

The Navlab group at Carnegie Mellon University has a long history of development of automated vehicles and intelligent systems for driver assistance. The earlier work of the group concentrated on road following, cross-country driving, and obstacle detection. The new focus is on short-range sensing, to look all around the vehicle for safe driving. The current system uses video sensing, laser rangefinders, a novel light-stripe rangefinder, software to process each sensor individually, and a map-based fusion system. The complete system has been demonstrated on the Navlab 11 vehicle for monitoring the environment of a vehicle driving through a cluttered urban environment, …

A Label-Switching Packet Forwarding Architecture For Multi-Hop Wireless Lans, Arup Acharya, Archan Misra, Sorav Bansal Sep 2002

A Label-Switching Packet Forwarding Architecture For Multi-Hop Wireless Lans, Arup Acharya, Archan Misra, Sorav Bansal

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A router in wired network typically requires multiple network interfaces to act as a router or a forwarding node. In an ad-hoc multi-hop wireless network on the other hand, any node with a wireless network interface card can operate as a router or a forwarding node, since it can receive a packet from a neighboring node, do a route lookup based on the packet's destination IP address, and then transmit the packet to another neighboring node using the same wireless interface. This paper investigates a combined medium access and next-hop address lookup based on fixed length labels (instead of IP …

The Case For Cyber Foraging, Rajesh Balan, Jason Flinn, Mahadev Satyanarayanan, Shafeeq Sinnamohideen, Hen-I Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose cyber foraging: a mechanism to augment the computational and storage capabilities of mobile devices. Cyber foraging uses opportunistically discovered servers in the environment to improve the performance of interactive applications and distributed file systems on mobile clients. We show how the performance of distributed file systems can be improved by staging data at these servers even though the servers are not trusted. We also show how the performance of interactive applications can be improved via remote execution. Finally, we present VERSUDS: a virtual interface to heteregeneous service discovery protocols that can be used to discover …

Energy Efficiency And Throughput For Tcp Traffic In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Sorav Bansal, Rajeev Gupta, Rajeev Shorey, Imran Ali, Ashu Razdan, Archan Misra Jun 2002

Energy Efficiency And Throughput For Tcp Traffic In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Sorav Bansal, Rajeev Gupta, Rajeev Shorey, Imran Ali, Ashu Razdan, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study the performance metrics associated with TCP regulated traffic in multi-hop, wireless networks that use a common physical channel (e.g., IEEE 802.11). In contrast to earlier analyses, we focus simultaneously on two key operating metrics– the energy efficiency and the session throughput. Using analysis and simulations, we show how these metrics are strongly influenced by the radio transmission range of individual nodes. Due to tradeoffs between the individual packet transmission energy and the likelihood of retransmissions, the total energy consumption is a convex function of the number of hops (and hence, of the transmission range). On the other hand, …

Avoiding Congestion Collapse On The Internet Using Tcp Tunnels, Boon Peng Lee, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Jacob Lillykutty, Winston Seah, A. L. Ananda Jun 2002

Avoiding Congestion Collapse On The Internet Using Tcp Tunnels, Boon Peng Lee, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Jacob Lillykutty, Winston Seah, A. L. Ananda

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper discusses the application of TCP tunnels on the Internet and how Internet traffic can benefit from the congestion control mechanism of the tunnels. Primarily, we show the TCP tunnels offer TCP-friendly flows protection from TCP-unfriendly traffic. TCP tunnels also reduce the many flows situation on the Internet to that of a few flows. In addition, TCP tunnels eliminate unnecessary packet loss in the core routers of the congested backbones, which waste precious bandwidth leading to congestion collapse due to unresponsive UDP flows. We finally highlight that the use of TCP tunnels can, in principle, help prevent certain forms …

Idmp: An Intradomain Mobility Management Protocol For Next-Generation Wireless Networks, Subir Das, Anthony Mcauley, Ashutosh Dutta, Archan Misra, Sajal K. Das Jun 2002

Idmp: An Intradomain Mobility Management Protocol For Next-Generation Wireless Networks, Subir Das, Anthony Mcauley, Ashutosh Dutta, Archan Misra, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes a lightweight Intra-domain Management Protocol (IDMP) for managing mobility within a domain, commonly known as micro-mobility management, for next generation wireless networks. IDMP is modular and simple because it leverages existing protocols, such as Mobile IP or SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) as global mobility management, for locating roaming nodes. Unlike other proposed intra-domain mobility management schemes, IDMP uses two dynamically autoconfigured care-of addresses (CoAs) for routing the packets destined to mobile nodes. The global care-of address (GCoA) is relatively stable and identifies the mobile node’s attachment to the current domain, while the local care-of address (LCoA) changes …

Minimum Energy Paths For Reliable Communication In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra Jun 2002

Minimum Energy Paths For Reliable Communication In Multi-Hop Wireless Networks, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Current algorithms for minimum-energy routing in wireless networks typically select minimum-cost multi-hop paths. In scenarios where the transmission power is fixed, each link has the same cost and the minimum-hop path is selected. In situations where the transmission power can be varied with the distance of the link, the link cost is higher for longer hops; the energy-aware routing algorithms select a path with a large number of small-distance hops. In this paper, we argue that such a formulation based solely on the energy spent in a single transmission is misleading --- the proper metric should include the total energy …

Multi-Level Modeling Of Software On Hardware In Concurrent Computation, Joann M. Paul, Arne Suppe, Henele I. Adams, Donald E. Thomas Apr 2002

Multi-Level Modeling Of Software On Hardware In Concurrent Computation, Joann M. Paul, Arne Suppe, Henele I. Adams, Donald E. Thomas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The fundamental modeling differences between hardware and software modeling can be thought of as reasoning about connectedness vs. reasoning about interleaved (shared) access to resources. A natural design hierarchy for physical systems is component-based because of the existence of a consistent basis for interconnect between design levels. However, performance modeling and design of concurrent, programmable systems require new ways of thinking about what it means to abstract detail, add detail and partition a model of software executing on hardware. We motivate frequency interleaving (FI) as a common simulation foundation for these systems because it resolves flow and partitioning with software …

Mrpc: Maximizing Network Lifetime For Reliable Routing In Wireless Environments, Archan Misra, Suman Banerjee Mar 2002

Mrpc: Maximizing Network Lifetime For Reliable Routing In Wireless Environments, Archan Misra, Suman Banerjee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose MRPC, a new power-aware routing algorithm for energy-efficient routing that increases the operational lifetime of multi-hop wireless networks. In contrast to conventional power-aware algorithms, MRPC identifies the capacity of a node not just by its residual battery energy, but also by the expected energy spent in reliably forwarding a packet over a specific link. Such a formulation better captures scenarios where link transmission costs also depend on physical distances between nodes and the link error rates. Using a max-min formulation, MRPC selects the path that has the largest packet capacity at the 'critical' node (the one with the …

Idmp-Based Fast Handoffs And Paging In Ip-Based 4g Mobile Networks, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony Mcauley, Sajal K. Das Mar 2002

Idmp-Based Fast Handoffs And Paging In Ip-Based 4g Mobile Networks, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony Mcauley, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We consider the use of our previously proposed Intra-Domain Mobility Management Protocol (IDMP) in fourth-generation mobile networks. On evaluating the heterogeneous access technologies, cellular layouts, and application characteristics of 4G environments, we realize a need to reduce both handoff latency and the frequency of mobility-related signaling. We first present IDMP's fast intradomain handoff mechanism that uses a duration-limited proactive packet multicasting solution. We quantify the expected buffering requirements of our proposed multicasting scheme for typical 4G network characteristics and compare it with alternative IP-based fast handoff solutions. We also present a paging scheme under IDMP that replicates the current cellular …

Characteristics Of Erp Software Maintenance: A Multiple Case Study, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Silvana Faja, Teuta Cata

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A multiple case study approach was employed to identify maintenance activities pertaining to enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation, classify them into maintenance categories, and assess their relative frequency at various stages of the ERP maintenance lifecycle. Five maintenance categories (corrective, adaptive, perfective, preventive, user support) were identified from a review of the literature on software maintenance. A new category pertaining to ‘communication, coordination and knowledge exchange with external parties’ and herein labeled ‘external parties’ is introduced to highlight the supporting role of external parties in ERP maintenance. This category includes reporting problems to vendors and consultants, tracking their progress towards …

Modeling And Simulation Of Steady State And Transient Behaviors For Emergent Socs, Joann M. Paul, Arne Suppe, Donald E. Thomas Oct 2001

Modeling And Simulation Of Steady State And Transient Behaviors For Emergent Socs, Joann M. Paul, Arne Suppe, Donald E. Thomas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We introduce a formal basis for viewing computer systems as mixed steady state and non-steady state (transient) behaviors to motivate novel design strategies resulting from simultaneous consideration of function, scheduling and architecture. We relate three design styles: Hierarchical decomposition, static mapping and directed platform that have traditionally been separate. By considering them together, we reason that once a steady state system is mapped to an architecture, the unused processing and communication power may be viewed as a platform for a transient system, ultimately resulting in more effective design approaches that ease the static mapping problem while still allowing for effective …

Jointly Coordinating Ecn And Tcp For Rapid Adaptation To Varying Bandwidth, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott Oct 2001

Jointly Coordinating Ecn And Tcp For Rapid Adaptation To Varying Bandwidth, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The introduction of service differentiation in the Internet implies that the residual bandwidth available to best-effort traffic becomes highly variable. We explore the design of a rapidly-reactive congestion control framework, where the ECN-aware best-effort flows aggressively go after any unused capacity. By making routers mark packets in a much more aggressive manner, we are able to achieve fast backoff in the network without resorting to the TCP's current drastic step of halving the congestion window. Simulations indicate that our ECN-mod protocol is better than ECN-NewReno in exploiting rapid variations in the available bandwidth. Moreover, the milder backoff policy of ECN-mod …

Hierarchical Mobility Management For Voip Traffic, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony J. Mcauley Oct 2001

Hierarchical Mobility Management For Voip Traffic, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony J. Mcauley

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A hierarchical IP-based mobility management mechanism is proposed for VoIP applications. The suggested mechanism uses the DMA (dynamic mobility agent) architecture, based on IDMP (intra-domain mobility management protocol), for managing intra-domain mobility and the dynamic binding mechanism of SIP (session initiation protocol) for managing global mobility. This combination of network and application layer mobility management reduces the global signaling load, provides fast handoff for ongoing conversations, enables efficient global transport and supports IP-layer paging.

Autoconfiguration, Registration And Mobility Management For Pervasive Computing, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony Mcauley, Sajal K. Das Aug 2001

Autoconfiguration, Registration And Mobility Management For Pervasive Computing, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony Mcauley, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the vision of pervasive computing, users will exchange information and control their environments from anywhere using various wireline/wireless networks and computing devices. We believe that current protocols, such as DHCP, PPP, and Mobile IP, must be enhanced to support pervasive network access. In particular, this article identifies three fundamental functions: autoconfiguration, registration, and mobility management, that need such enhancements. Realizing that the IP autoconfiguration capabilities must be extended to configure routers and large dynamic networks, we first describe our autoconfiguration solution based on the dynamic configuration and distribution protocol (DCDP). Second, we discuss why providing user-specific services over a …

Application-Centric Analysis Of Ip-Based Mobility Management Techniques, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Prathima Agrawal Jul 2001

Application-Centric Analysis Of Ip-Based Mobility Management Techniques, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Prathima Agrawal

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper considers three applications—VoIP, mobile Web access and mobile server-based data transfers—and evaluates the applicability of various IP-based mobility management mechanisms. We first survey the features and characteristics of various IP mobility protocols, such as MIPv4, MIPv6, MIP-RO, SIP, CIP, HAWAII, MIP-RR and IDMP, and then evaluate their utility on an application-specific basis. The diversity in the mobility-related requirements ensures that no single mobility solution is universally applicable. We recommend a hierarchical mobility architecture. The framework uses our Dynamic Mobility Agent (DMA) architecture for managing intra-domain mobility and multiple application-based binding protocols for supporting inter-domain mobility. Thus, we recommend …

Effect Of Exponential Averaging On The Variability Of A Red Queue, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras Jun 2001

Effect Of Exponential Averaging On The Variability Of A Red Queue, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The paper analyzes how using a longer memory of the past queue occupancy in computing the average queue occupancy affects the stability and variability of a RED queue. Extensive simulation studies with both persistent and Web TCP sources are used to study the variance of the RED queue as a function of the memory of the averaging process. Our results show that there is very little performance improvement (and in fact, possibly significant performance degradation) if the length of memory is increased beyond a very small value. Contrary to current practice, our results show that a longer memory reduces the …

Implementation And Performance Evaluation Of Telemip, Kaushik Chakraborty, Archan Misra, Subir Das, Anthony J. Mcauley, Ashutosh Dutta, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present our implementation of TeleMIP a two-level architecture for IP based mobility management TeleMIP essentially uses an Intra-Domain Mobility Management Protocol IDMP for managing mobility within a domain and Mobile IP for supporting inter-domain global mobility. Unlike other proposed schemes for intra-domain mobility management IDMP uses two care of addresses for mobility management The global care of address is relatively stable and identifies the mobile nodes current domain[1] while the local care of address changes every time the mobile changes subnets and identifies the mobiles current point of attachment. The paper describes our TeleMIP implementation based …

Tcp Hack: Tcp Header Checksum Option To Improve Performance Over Lossy Links, Rajesh Krishna Balan, Boon Peng Lee, Renjish Kumar, Jacob Lillykutty, Winston Seah, A. L. Ananda

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wireless networks have become increasingly common and an increasing number of devices are communicating with each other over lossy links. Unfortunately, TCP performs poorly over lossy links as it is unable to differentiate the loss due to packet corruption from that due to congestion. We present an extension to TCP which enables TCP to distinguish packet corruption from congestion in lossy environments resulting in improved performance. We refer to this extension as the HeAder ChecKsum option (HACK). We implemented our algorithm in the Linux kernel and performed various tests to determine its effectiveness. Our results have shown that HACK performs …

Generalized Tcp Congestion Avoidance And Its Effect On Bandwidth Sharing And Variability, Archan Misra, John Baras, Teunis Ott Dec 2000

Generalized Tcp Congestion Avoidance And Its Effect On Bandwidth Sharing And Variability, Archan Misra, John Baras, Teunis Ott

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To model possible suggested changes in TCP window adaptation in response to randomized feedback, such as ECN (explicit congestion notification), we formulate a generalized version of the TCP congestion avoidance algorithm. We first consider multiple such generalized TCP flows sharing a bottleneck buffer under the assured service model and use a fixed point technique to obtain the mean window sizes and throughputs for the TCP flows, To further study how changes in the adaptation algorithm affect the variability in the throughput, we use an analytical-cum-numerical technique to derive the window distribution (and related statistics) of a single generalized flow under …

Extensible Mpeg-4 Textual Format (Xmt), Michelle Kim, Steve Wood, Lai-Tee Cheok

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes the Extensible MPEG-4 Textual format (XMT), a framework for representing MPEG-4 scene description using a textual syntax. The XMT allows the content authors to exchange their content with other authors, tools or service providers, and facilitates interoperability with both the X3D, developed by the Web3D consortium, and the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SM1L) from the W3C consortium.

Using 'Drop-Biasing' To Stabilize The Occupancy Of Random-Drop Queues With Tcp Traffic, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras Nov 2000

Using 'Drop-Biasing' To Stabilize The Occupancy Of Random-Drop Queues With Tcp Traffic, Archan Misra, Teunis Ott, John Baras

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The paper describes how the use of ‘drop-biasing’, a technique to control the distribution of the gap between consecutive packet losses in random drop queues (such as RED) can be used to reduce the variability of the queue occupancy with TCP traffic. Reducing the variance of the queue occupancy reduces delay jitter for buffered packets, as well as decreases the likelihood of buffer underflow. We find that modifying the packet drop probabilities to ensure a minimum separation between consecutive packet drops serves to decrease the variability in the queue occupancy. This is really achieved as a result of the increased …

Telemip: Telecommunications-Enhanced Mobile Ip Architecture For Fast Intradomain Mobility, Subir Das, Archan Misra, Prathima Agrawal, Sajal K. Das

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This article first surveys existing protocols for supporting IP mobility and then proposes an extension to the mobile IP architecture, called TeleMIP. Our architecture attempts to achieve smaller handoff latency by localizing the scope of most location update messages within an administrative domain or a geographical region. TeleMIP is intended for use in evolving third-generation wireless networks, and introduces a new logical entity, called the mobility agent, which provides a mobile node with a stable point of attachment in a foreign network. While the MA is functionally similar to conventional foreign agents, it is located at a higher level in …

Decision Support Methods In Diabetic Patient Management By Insulin Administration Neural Network Vs. Induction Methods For Knowledge Classification, B. V. Ambrosiadou, S. Vadera, Venky Shankaraman, D. Goulis, G. Gogou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Diabetes mellitus is now recognised as a major worldwide public health problem. At present, about 100 million people are registered as diabetic patients. Many clinical, social and economic problems occur as a consequence of insulin-dependent diabetes. Treatment attempts to prevent or delay complications by applying ‘optimal’ glycaemic control. Therefore, there is a continuous need for effective monitoring of the patient. Given the popularity of decision tree learning algorithms as well as neural networks for knowledge classification which is further used for decision support, this paper examines their relative merits by applying one algorithm from each family on a medical problem; …

Jotmail: A Voicemail Interface That Enables You To See What Was Said, Steve Whittaker, Richard C. Davis, Julia Hirschberg, Urs Muller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Voicemail is a pervasive, but under-researched tool for workplace communication. Despite potential advantages of voicemail over email, current phone-based voicemail UIs are highly problematic for users. We present a novel, Web-based, voicemail interface, Jotmail. The design was based on data from several studies of voicemail tasks and user strategies. The GUI has two main elements: (a) personal annotations that serve as a visual analogue to underlying speech; (b) automatically derived message header information. We evaluated Jotmail in an 8-week field trial, where people used it as their only means for accessing voicemail. Jotmail was successful in supporting most key voicemail …
