Trigger Action Programs (TAPs) are event-driven rules that allow users to automate smart-devices and internet services. Users can write TAPs by specifying triggers and actions from a set of predefined channels and functions. Despite its simplicity, composing TAPs can still be challenging for users due to the enormous search space of available triggers and actions. The growing popularity of TAPs is followed by the increasing number of supported devices and services, resulting in a huge number of possible combinations between triggers and actions. Motivated by such a fact, we improve our prior work and propose RecipeGen++, a deep-learning-based approach that …

Supporting real-time referring expression comprehension (REC) on pervasive devices is an important capability for human-AI collaborative tasks. Model pruning techniques, applied to DNN models, can enable real-time execution even on resource-constrained devices. However, existing pruning strategies are designed principally for uni-modal applications, and suffer a significant loss of accuracy when applied to REC tasks that require fusion of textual and visual inputs. We thus present a multi-modal pruning model, LGMDP, which uses language as a pivot to dynamically and judiciously select the relevant computational blocks that need to be executed. LGMDP also introduces a new SoftSkip mechanism, whereby 'skipped' visual …

Automatically fixing compilation errors can greatly raise the productivity of software development, by guiding the novice or AI programmers to write and debug code. Recently, learning-based program repair has gained extensive attention and became the state of-the-art in practice. But it still leaves plenty of space for improvement. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end solution TransRepair to locate the error lines and create the correct substitute for a C program simultaneously. Superior to the counterpart, our approach takes into account the context of erroneous code and diagnostic compilation feedback. Then we devise a Transformer-based neural network to learn the …

Deep learning has become a promising programming paradigm in software development, owing to its surprising performance in solving many challenging tasks. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are increasingly being deployed in practice, but are limited on resource-constrained devices owing to their demand for computational power. Quantization has emerged as a promising technique to reduce the size of DNNs with comparable accuracy as their floating-point numbered counterparts. The resulting quantized neural networks (QNNs) can be implemented energy-efficiently. Similar to their floating-point numbered counterparts, quality assurance techniques for QNNs, such as testing and formal verification, are essential but are currently less explored. In …

Stitching Weight-Shared Deep Neural Networks For Efficient Multitask Inference On Gpu, Zeyu Wang, Xiaoxi He, Zimu Zhou, Xu Wang, Qiang Ma, Xin Miao, Zhuo Liu, Lothar Thiele, Zheng. Yang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Intelligent personal and home applications demand multiple deep neural networks (DNNs) running on resourceconstrained platforms for compound inference tasks, known as multitask inference. To fit multiple DNNs into low-resource devices, emerging techniques resort to weight sharing among DNNs to reduce their storage. However, such reduction in storage fails to translate into efficient execution on common accelerators such as GPUs. Most DNN graph rewriters are blind for multiDNN optimization, while GPU vendors provide inefficient APIs for parallel multi-DNN execution at runtime. A few prior graph rewriters suggest cross-model graph fusion for low-latency multiDNN execution. Yet they request duplication of the shared …

Inaccessible e-commerce websites and mobile applications exclude people with visual impairments (PVI) from online shopping. Customer-to-customer (C2C) marketplaces, a form of e-commerce where trading happens not between businesses and customers but between customers, could pose a unique set of challenges in the interactions that the platform brings about. Through online questionnaire and remote interviews, we investigate problems experienced by people with low vision disabilities in common C2C scenarios. Our study with low vision participants (N = 12) reveal both previously known general accessibility issues (e.g., web and mobile interface accessibility) and C2C specific accessibility issues (e.g., inability to confirm item …

Ffl: Fine Grained Fault Localization For Student Programs Via Syntactic And Semantic Reasoning, Thanh Dat Nguyen, Cong Thanh Le, Duc-Minh Luong, Van-Hai Duong, Xuan Bach Le, David Lo, Quyet-Thang Huynh
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Fault localization has been used to provide feedback for incorrect student programs since locations of faults can be a valuable hint for students about what caused their programs to crash. Unfortunately, existing fault localization techniques for student programs are limited because they usually consider either the program’s syntax or semantics alone. This motivates the new design of fault localization techniques that use both semantic and syntactical information of the program. In this paper, we introduce FFL (Fine grained Fault Localization), a novel technique using syntactic and semantic reasoning for localizing bugs in student programs. The novelty in FFL that allows …

With the rise of the pull request mechanism in software development, the quality of pull requests has gained more attention. Prior works focus on improving the quality of pull request descriptions and several approaches have been proposed to automatically generate pull request descriptions. As an essential component of a pull request, pull request titles have not received a similar level of attention. To further facilitate automation in software development and to help developers draft high-quality pull request titles, we introduce AutoPRTitle. AutoPRTitle is specifically designed to generate pull request titles automatically. AutoPRTitle can generate a precise and succinct pull request …

Automated program repair (APR) holds the promise of aiding manual debugging activities. Over a decade of evolution, a broad range of APR techniques have been proposed and evaluated on a set of real-world bug datasets. However, while more and more bugs have been correctly fixed, we observe that the growth of newly fixed bugs by APR techniques has hit a bottleneck in recent years. In this work, we explore the possibility of addressing complicated bugs by proposing TransplantFix, a novel APR technique that leverages graph differencing-based transplantation from the donor method. The key novelty of TransplantFix lies in three aspects: …

It is the basic right of a user to know how the permissions are used within the Android app’s scope and to refuse the app if granted permissions are used for the activities other than specified use which can amount to malicious behavior. This paper proposes an approach and a vision to automatically model the permissions necessary for Android apps from users’ perspective and enable fine-grained permission controls by users, thus facilitating users in making more well-informed and flexible permission decisions for different app functionalities, which in turn improve the security and data privacy of the App and enforce apps …
Taming Multi-Output Recommenders For Software Engineering, Christoph Treude
Taming Multi-Output Recommenders For Software Engineering, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recommender systems are a valuable tool for software engineers. For example, they can provide developers with a ranked list of files likely to contain a bug, or multiple auto-complete suggestions for a given method stub. However, the way these recommender systems interact with developers is often rudimentary—a long list of recommendations only ranked by the model’s confidence. In this vision paper, we lay out our research agenda for re-imagining how recommender systems for software engineering communicate their insights to developers. When issuing recommendations, our aim is to recommend diverse rather than redundant solutions and present them in ways that highlight …

Towards Robust Models Of Code Via Energy-Based Learning On Auxiliary Datasets, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui, Yijun Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing approaches to improving the robustness of source code models concentrate on recognizing adversarial samples rather than valid samples that fall outside of a given distribution, which we refer to as out-of-distribution (OOD) samples. To this end, we propose to use an auxiliary dataset (out-of-distribution) such that, when trained together with the main dataset, they will enhance the model’s robustness. We adapt energy-bounded learning objective function to assign a higher score to in-distribution samples and a lower score to out-of-distribution samples in order to incorporate such out-of-distribution samples into the training process of source code models. In terms of OOD …

Collaborative Robots (cobots) are regarded as highly safety-critical cyber-physical systems (CPSs) owing to their close physical interactions with humans. In settings such as smart factories, they are frequently augmented with AI. For example, in order to move materials, cobots utilize object detectors based on deep learning models. Deep learning, however, has been demonstrated as vulnerable to adversarial attacks: a minor change (noise) to benign input can fool the underlying neural networks and lead to a different result. While existing works have explored such attacks in the context of picture/object classification, less attention has been given to attacking neural networks used …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large pre-trained models have dramatically improved the state-of-the-art on a variety of natural language processing (NLP) tasks. CodeBERT is one such pre-trained model for natural language (NL) and programming language (PL) which captures the semantics in natural language and programming language, and produces general-purpose representations. While it has been shown to support natural language code search and code documentation generation tasks, its effectiveness for code clone detection is not explored in depth. In this paper, we aim to replicate and evaluate the performance of CodeBERT for code clone detection on multiple datasets with varying functionalities to understand (1) whether CodeBERT …
Adding Context To Source Code Representations For Deep Learning, Fuwei Tian, Christoph Treude
Adding Context To Source Code Representations For Deep Learning, Fuwei Tian, Christoph Treude
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Deep learning models have been successfully applied to a variety of software engineering tasks, such as code classification, summarisation, and bug and vulnerability detection. In order to apply deep learning to these tasks, source code needs to be represented in a format that is suitable for input into the deep learning model. Most approaches to representing source code, such as tokens, abstract syntax trees (ASTs), data flow graphs (DFGs), and control flow graphs (CFGs) only focus on the code itself and do not take into account additional context that could be useful for deep learning models. In this paper, we …

Information leakage can have dramatic consequences on systems security. Among harmful information leaks, the timing information leakage occurs whenever an attacker successfully deduces confidential internal information. In this work, we consider that the attacker has access (only) to the system execution time. We address the following timed opacity problem: given a timed system, a private location and a final location, synthesize the execution times from the initial location to the final location for which one cannot deduce whether the system went through the private location. We also consider the full timed opacity problem, asking whether the system is opaque for …

Learning heterogeneous graphs consisting of different types of nodes and edges enhances the results of homogeneous graph techniques. An interesting example of such graphs is control-flow graphs representing possible software code execution flows. As such graphs represent more semantic information of code, developing techniques and tools for such graphs can be highly beneficial for detecting vulnerabilities in software for its reliability. However, existing heterogeneous graph techniques are still insufficient in handling complex graphs where the number of different types of nodes and edges is large and variable. This paper concentrates on the Ethereum smart contracts as a sample of software …

Prior studies have demonstrated that approaches to generate an answer summary for a given technical query in Software Question and Answer (SQA) sites are desired. We find that existing approaches are assessed solely through user studies. Hence, a new user study needs to be performed every time a new approach is introduced; this is time-consuming, slows down the development of the new approach, and results from different user studies may not be comparable to each other. There is a need for a benchmark with ground truth summaries as a complement assessment through user studies. Unfortunately, such a benchmark is non-existent …

Compressing Pre-Trained Models Of Code Into 3 Mb, Jieke Shi, Zhou Yang, Bowen Xu, Hong Jin Kang, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Although large pre-trained models of code have delivered significant advancements in various code processing tasks, there is an impediment to the wide and fluent adoption of these powerful models in software developers’ daily workflow: these large models consume hundreds of megabytes of memory and run slowly on personal devices, which causes problems in model deployment and greatly degrades the user experience. It motivates us to propose Compressor, a novel approach that can compress the pre-trained models of code into extremely small models with negligible performance sacrifice. Our proposed method formulates the design of tiny models as simplifying the pre-trained model …

Autonomous driving systems (ADSs) must be tested thoroughly before they can be deployed in autonomous vehicles. High-fidelity simulators allow them to be tested against diverse scenarios, including those that are difficult to recreate in real-world testing grounds. While previous approaches have shown that test cases can be generated automatically, they tend to focus on weak oracles (e.g. reaching the destination without collisions) without assessing whether the journey itself was undertaken safely and satisfied the law. In this work, we propose LawBreaker, an automated framework for testing ADSs against real-world traffic laws, which is designed to be compatible with different scenario …

Pull Requests (PRs) are a mechanism on modern collaborative coding platforms, such as GitHub. PRs allow developers to tell others that their code changes are available for merging into another branch in a repository. A PR needs to be reviewed and approved by the core team of the repository before the changes are merged into the branch. Usually, reviewers need to identify a PR that is in line with their interests before providing a review. By default, PRs are arranged in a list view that shows the titles of PRs. Therefore, it is desirable to have a precise and concise …

Semantic code clone detection involves the detection of functionally similar code fragments which may otherwise be lexically, syntactically, or structurally dissimilar. The detection of semantic code clones has important applications in aspect mining and product line analysis. The accurate detection of semantic code clones is a challenging task and various techniques have been proposed. However, the evaluation of these techniques is performed using various datasets and we do not have a clear picture of the performance of these techniques relative to each other. Recently, SemanticCloneBench has been introduced as a benchmark for semantic clones. Now, we can use the SemanticCloneBench …

Hierarchical Semantic-Aware Neural Code Representation, Yuan Jiang, Xiaohong Su, Christoph Treude, Tiantian Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Code representation is a fundamental problem in many software engineering tasks. Despite the effort made by many researchers, it is still hard for existing methods to fully extract syntactic, structural and sequential features of source code, which form the hierarchical semantics of the program and are necessary to achieve a deeper code understanding. To alleviate this difficulty, we propose a new supervised approach based on the novel use of Tree-LSTM to incorporate the sequential and the global semantic features of programs explicitly into the representation model. Unlike previous techniques, our proposed model can not only learn low-level syntactic information within …

Although deep learning has demonstrated astonishing performance in many applications, there are still concerns about its dependability. One desirable property of deep learning applications with societal impact is fairness (i.e., non-discrimination). Unfortunately, discrimination might be intrinsically embedded into the models due to the discrimination in the training data. As a countermeasure, fairness testing systemically identifies discriminatory samples, which can be used to retrain the model and improve the model’s fairness. Existing fairness testing approaches however have two major limitations. Firstly, they only work well on traditional machine learning models and have poor performance (e.g., effectiveness and efficiency) on deep learning …

Holistic Combination Of Structural And Textual Code Information For Context Based Api Recommendation, Chi Chen, Xin Peng, Zhengchang Xing, Jun Sun, Xin Wang, Yifan Zhao, Wenyun Zhao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Context based API recommendation is an important way to help developers find the needed APIs effectively and efficiently. For effective API recommendation, we need not only a joint view of both structural and textual code information, but also a holistic view of correlated API usage in control and data flow graph as a whole. Unfortunately, existing API recommendation methods exploit structural or textual code information separately. In this work, we propose a novel API recommendation approach called APIRec-CST (API Recommendation by Combining Structural and Textual code information). APIRec-CST is a deep learning model that combines the API usage with the …

Learning based order dispatching has witnessed tremendous success in ride hailing. However, the success halts within individual ride hailing platforms because sharing raw order dispatching data across platforms may leak user privacy and business secrets. Such data isolation not only impairs user experience but also decreases the potential revenues of the platforms. In this paper, we advocate federated order dispatching for cross-platform ride hailing, where multiple platforms collaboratively make dispatching decisions without sharing their local data. Realizing this concept calls for new federated learning strategies that tackle the unique challenges on effectiveness, privacy and efficiency in the context of order …

The lottery ticket hypothesis (LTH) states that a randomly initialized dense network contains sub-networks that can be trained in isolation to the performance of the dense network. In this paper, to achieve rapid learning with less computational cost, we explore LTH in the context of meta learning. First, we experimentally show that there are sparse sub-networks, known as meta winning tickets, which can be meta-trained to few-shot classification accuracy to the original backbone. The application of LTH in meta learning enables the adaptation of meta-trained networks on various IoT devices with fewer computation. However, the status quo to identify winning …

Aligning Dual Disentangled User Representations From Ratings And Textual Content, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Classical recommendation methods typically render user representation as a single vector in latent space. Oftentimes, a user's interactions with items are influenced by several hidden factors. To better uncover these hidden factors, we seek disentangled representations. Existing disentanglement methods for recommendations are mainly concerned with user-item interactions alone. To further improve not only the effectiveness of recommendations but also the interpretability of the representations, we propose to learn a second set of disentangled user representations from textual content and to align the two sets of representations with one another. The purpose of this coupling is two-fold. For one benefit, we …

Studies have estimated that, in industrial settings, developers spend between 30 and 90 percent of their time fixing bugs. As such, tools that assist in identifying the location of bugs provide value by reducing debugging costs. One such tool is BugLocator. This study initially aimed to determine if developers working on the Adobe Analytics product could use BugLocator. The initial results show that BugLocator achieves a similar accuracy on five of seven Adobe Analytics repositories and on open-source projects. However, these results do not meet the minimum applicability requirement deemed necessary by Adobe Analytics developers prior to possible adoption. Thus, …

Context: Championed by IBM’s vision of autonomic computing paper in 2003, the autonomic computing research field has seen increased research activity over the last 20 years. Several conferences (SEAMS, SASO, ICAC) and workshops (SISSY) have been established and have contributed to the autonomic computing knowledge base in search of a new kind of system — a self-adaptive system (SAS). These systems are characterized by being context-aware and can act on that awareness. The actions carried out could be on the system or on the context (or environment). The underlying goal of a SAS is the sustained achievement of its goals …
