Hydra: Massively Compositional Model For Cross-Project Defect Prediction, Xin Xia, David Lo, Sinno Jialin Pan, Nachiappan Nagappan, Xinyu Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most software defect prediction approaches are trained and applied on data from the same project. However, often a new project does not have enough training data. Cross-project defect prediction, which uses data from other projects to predict defects in a particular project, provides a new perspective to defect prediction. In this work, we propose a HYbrid moDel Reconstruction Approach (HYDRA) for cross-project defect prediction, which includes two phases: genetic algorithm (GA) phase and ensemble learning (EL) phase. These two phases create a massive composition of classifiers. To examine the benefits of HYDRA, we perform experiments on 29 datasets from the …

"Automated Debugging Considered Harmful" Considered Harmful: A User Study Revisiting The Usefulness Of Spectra-Based Fault Localization Techniques With Professionals Using Real Bugs From Large Systems, Xin Xia, Lingfeng Bao, David Lo, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to the complexity of software systems, bugs are inevitable. Software debugging is tedious and time consuming. To help developers perform this crucial task, a number of spectra-based fault localization techniques have been proposed. In general, spectra-based fault localization helps developers to find the location of a bug given its symptoms (e.g., program failures). A previous study by Parnin and Orso however implies that several assumptions made by existing work on spectra-based fault localization do not hold in practice, which hinders the practical usage of these tools. Moreover, a recent study by Xie et al. claims that spectra-based fault localization …

Integrated Software Fingerprinting Via Neural-Network-Based Control Flow Obfuscation, Haoyu Ma, Ruiqi Li, Xiaoxu Yu, Chunfu Jia, Debin Gao Oct 2016

Integrated Software Fingerprinting Via Neural-Network-Based Control Flow Obfuscation, Haoyu Ma, Ruiqi Li, Xiaoxu Yu, Chunfu Jia, Debin Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Dynamic software fingerprinting has been an important tool in fighting against software theft and pirating by embedding unique fingerprints into software copies. However, existing work uses methods from dynamic software watermarking as direct solutions in which secret marks are inside rather independent code modules attached to the software. This results in an intrinsic weakness against targeted collusive attacks since differences among software copies correspond directly to the fingerprint-related components. In this paper, we suggest a novel mode of dynamic fingerprinting called integrated fingerprinting, of which the goal is to ensure all fingerprinted software copies possess identical behaviors at semantic level. …

Xd-Track: Leveraging Multi-Dimensional Information For Passive Wi-Fi Tracking, Yaxiong Xie, Jie Xiong, Mo Li, Kyle Jamieson Oct 2016

Xd-Track: Leveraging Multi-Dimensional Information For Passive Wi-Fi Tracking, Yaxiong Xie, Jie Xiong, Mo Li, Kyle Jamieson

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We describe the design and implementation of xD-Track, the first practical Wi-Fi based device-free localization system that employs a simultaneous and joint estimation of time-of-flight, angle-of-arrival, angle-of-departure, and Doppler shift to fully characterize the wireless channel between a sender and receiver. Using this full characterization, xD-Track introduces novel methods to measure and isolate the signal path that reflects off a person of interest, allowing it to localize a human with just a single pair of access points, or a single client-access point pair. Searching the multiple dimensions to accomplish the above is highly computationally burdensome, so xD-Track introduces novel methods …

Amalgam+: Composing Rich Information Sources For Accurate Bug Localization, Shaowei Wang, David Lo Oct 2016

Amalgam+: Composing Rich Information Sources For Accurate Bug Localization, Shaowei Wang, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

During the evolution of a software system, a large number of bug reports are submitted. Locating the source code files that need to be fixed to resolve the bugs is a challenging problem. Thus, there is a need for a technique that can automatically figure out these buggy files. A number of bug localization solutions that take in a bug report and output a ranked list of files sorted based on their likelihood to be buggy have been proposed in the literature. However, the accuracy of these tools still needs to be improved. In this paper, to address this need, …

Inferring Links Between Concerns And Methods With Multi-Abstraction Vector Space Model, Yun Zhang, David Lo, Xin Xia, Tien-Duy B. Le, Giuseppe Scanniello, Jianling Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Concern localization refers to the process of locating code units that match a particular textual description. It takes as input textual documents such as bug reports and feature requests and outputs a list of candidate code units that are relevant to the bug reports or feature requests. Many information retrieval (IR) based concern localization techniques have been proposed in the literature. These techniques typically represent code units and textual descriptions as a bag of tokens at one level of abstraction, e.g., each token is a word, or each token is a topic. In this work, we propose a multi-abstraction concern …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Some user needs in real life can only be accomplished by leveraging the intelligence and labor of other people via crowdsourcing tasks. For example, one may want to confirm the validity of the description of a secondhand laptop by asking someone else to inspect the laptop on site. To integrate these crowdsourcing tasks into user applications, it is required that crowd intelligence and labor be provided as easily accessible services (e.g., Web services), which can be called crowd services. In this paper, we develop a framework named CROWDSERVICE which supplies crowd intelligence and labor as publicly accessible crowd services via …

Incentive Mechanism Design For Heterogeneous Crowdsourcing Using All-Pay Contests, Tie Luo, Salil S. Kanhere, Sajal K. Das, Hwee-Pink Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many crowdsourcing scenarios are heterogeneous in the sense that, not only the workers' types (e.g., abilities, costs) are different, but the beliefs (probabilistic knowledge) about their respective types are also different. In this paper, we design an incentive mechanism for such scenarios using an asymmetric all-pay contest (or auction) model. Our design objective is an optimal mechanism, i.e., one that maximizes the crowdsourcing revenue minus cost. To achieve this, we furnish the contest with a prize tuple which is an array of reward functions for each potential winner (worker). We prove and characterize the unique equilibrium of this contest, and …

Dynamic-Music: Accurate Device-Free Indoor Localization, Xiang Li, Shengjie Li, Daqing Zhang, Jie Xiong, Yasha Wang, Hong Mei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Device-free passive indoor localization is playing a critical role in many applications such as elderly care, intrusion detection, smart home, etc. However, existing device-free localization systems either suffer from labor-intensive offline training or require dedicated special-purpose devices. To address the challenges, we present our system named MaTrack, which is implemented on commodity off-the-shelf Intel 5300 Wi-Fi cards. MaTrack proposes a novel Dynamic-MUSIC method to detect the subtle reflection signals from human body and further differentiate them from those reflected signals from static objects (furniture, walls, etc.) to identify the human target's angle for localization. MaTrack does not require any offline …

Mining Revision Histories To Detect Cross-Language Clones Without Intermediates, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhiming Peng, Lingxiao Jiang, Hao Zhong, Haibo Yu, Jianjun Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To attract more users on different platforms, many projects release their versions in multiple programming languages (e.g., Java and C#). They typically have many code snippets that implement similar functionalities, i.e., cross-language clones. Programmers often need to track and modify cross-language clones consistently to maintain similar functionalities across different language implementations. In literature, researchers have proposed approaches to detect cross-language clones, mostly for languages that share a common intermediate language (such as the .NET language family) so that techniques for detecting single-language clones can be applied. As a result, those approaches cannot detect cross-language clones for many projects that are …

Automated Bug Report Field Reassignment And Refinement Prediction, Xin Xia, David Lo, Emad Shihab, Xinyu Wang Sep 2016

Automated Bug Report Field Reassignment And Refinement Prediction, Xin Xia, David Lo, Emad Shihab, Xinyu Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bug fixing is one of the most important activities in software development and maintenance. Bugs are reported, recorded, and managed in bug tracking systems such as Bugzilla. In general, a bug report contains many fields, such as product, component, severity, priority, fixer, operating system (OS), and platform, which provide important information for the bug triaging and fixing process. Our previous study finds that approximately 80% of bug reports have their fields reassigned and refined at least once, and bugs with reassigned and refined fields take more time to fix than bugs with no reassigned and refined fields. Thus, automatically predicting …

While mobile crowd-sourcing has become a game-changer for many urban operations, such as last mile logistics and municipal monitoring, we believe that the design of such crowdsourcing strategies must better accommodate the real-world behavioral preferences and characteristics of users. To provide a real-world testbed to study the impact of novel mobile crowd-sourcing strategies, we have designed, developed and experimented with a real-world mobile crowd-tasking platform on the SMU campus, called TA$Ker. We enhanced the TA$Ker platform to support several new features (e.g., task bundling, differential pricing and cheating analytics) and experimentally investigated these features via a two-month deployment of TA$Ker, …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

By effectively utilizing smartphones to reach out and engage a large population of mobile users, mobile crowdsourcing can become a game-changer for many urban operations, such as last mile logistics and municipal monitoring. To overcome the uncertainties and risks associated with a purely best-effort, opportunistic model of such crowdsourcing, we advocate a more centrally-coordinated approach, that (a) takes into account the predicted movement paths of workers and (b) factors in typical human behavioral responses to various incentives and deadlines. To experimentally tackle these challenges, we design, develop and experiment with a real-world mobile crowd-Tasking platform on an urban campus in …

Indoor localization is of great importance to a wide range ofapplications in shopping malls, office buildings and publicplaces. The maturity of computer vision (CV) techniques andthe ubiquity of smartphone cameras hold promise for offering sub-meter accuracy localization services. However, pureCV-based solutions usually involve hundreds of photos andpre-calibration to construct image database, a labor-intensiveoverhead for practical deployment. We present ClickLoc, anaccurate, easy-to-deploy, sensor-enriched, image-based indoor localization system. With core techniques rooted insemantic information extraction and optimization-based sensor data fusion, ClickLoc is able to bootstrap with few images. Leveraging sensor-enriched photos, ClickLoc also enables user localization with a single photo of the …

Developers’ Perceptions On Object-Oriented Design And Architectural Roles, Maurício Aniche, Marco Aurélio Gerosa, Christoph Treude Sep 2016

Developers’ Perceptions On Object-Oriented Design And Architectural Roles, Maurício Aniche, Marco Aurélio Gerosa, Christoph Treude

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Software developers commonly rely on well-known software architecture patterns, such as MVC, to build their applications. In many of these patterns, classes play specific roles in the system, such as Controllers or Entities, which means that each of these classes has specific characteristics in terms of object-oriented class design and implementation. Indeed, as we have shown in a previous study, architectural roles are different from each other in terms of code metrics. In this paper, we present a study in a software development company in which we captured developers’ perceptions on object-oriented design aspects of the architectural roles in their …

Ra2: Predicting Simulation Execution Time For Cloud-Based Design Space Explorations, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Wentong Cai, Zengxiang Li, Suiping Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Design space exploration refers to the evaluation of implementation alternatives for many engineering and design problems. A popular exploration approach is to run a large number of simulations of the actual system with varying sets of configuration parameters to search for the optimal ones. Due to the potentially huge resource requirements, cloud-based simulation execution strategies should be considered in many cases. In this paper, we look at the issue of running largescale simulation-based design space exploration problems on commercial Infrastructure-as-a-Service clouds, namely Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure and Google Compute Engine. To efficiently manage cloud resources used for execution, the key …

Metaflow: A Scalable Metadata Lookup Service For Distributed File Systems In Data Centers, Peng Sun, Yonggang Wen, Nguyen Binh Duong Ta, Haiyong Xie

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In large-scale distributed file systems, efficient metadata operations are critical since most file operations have to interact with metadata servers first. In existing distributed hash table (DHT) based metadata management systems, the lookup service could be a performance bottleneck due to its significant CPU overhead. Our investigations showed that the lookup service could reduce system throughput by up to 70%, and increase system latency by a factor of up to 8 compared to ideal scenarios. In this paper, we present MetaFlow, a scalable metadata lookup service utilizing software-defined networking (SDN) techniques to distribute lookup workload over network components. MetaFlow tackles …

On The Feasibility Of Detecting Cross-Platform Code Clones Via Identifier Similarity, Xiao Cheng, Lingxiao Jiang, Hao Zhong, Haibo Yu, Jianjun Zhao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

More and more mobile applications run on multiple mobile operating systems to attract more users of different platforms. Although versions on different platforms are implemented in different programming languages (e.g., Java and Objective-C), there must be many code snippets that implement the similar business logic on different platforms. Such code snippets are called cross-platform clones. It is challenging but essential to detect such clones for software maintenance. Due to the practice that developers usually use some common identifiers when implementing the same business logic on different platforms, in this paper, we investigate the identifier similarity of the same mobile application …

Safegpu: Contract- And Library-Based Gpgpu For Object-Oriented Languages, Alexey Kolesnichenko, Christopher M. Poskitt, Sebastian Nanz

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Using GPUs as general-purpose processors has revolutionized parallel computing by providing, for a large and growing set of algorithms, massive data-parallelization on desktop machines. An obstacle to their widespread adoption, however, is the difficulty of programming them and the low-level control of the hardware required to achieve good performance. This paper proposes a programming approach, SafeGPU, that aims to make GPU data-parallel operations accessible through high-level libraries for object-oriented languages, while maintaining the performance benefits of lower-level code. The approach provides data-parallel operations for collections that can be chained and combined to express compound computations, with data synchronization and device …

Fine-Grained Appliance Usage And Energy Monitoring Through Mobile And Power-Line Sensing, Nirmalya Roy, Nilavra Pathak, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To promote energy-efficient operations in residential and office buildings, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) techniques have been proposed to infer the fine-grained power consumption and usage patterns of appliances from power-line measurement data. Fine-grained monitoring of everyday appliances (such as toasters and coffee makers) can not only promote energy-efficient building operations, but also provide unique insights into the context and activities of individuals. Current building-level NILM techniques are unable to identify the consumption characteristics of relatively low-load appliances, whereas smart-plug based solutions incur significant deployment and maintenance costs. In this paper, we investigate an intermediate architecture, where smart circuit breakers provide …

Comon+: A Cooperative Context Monitoring System For Multi-Device Personal Sensing Environments, Youngki Lee, Seungwoo Kang, Chulhong Min, Younghyun Ju, Inseok Hwang, Junehwa Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Continuous mobile sensing applications are emerging. Despite their usefulness, their real-world adoption has been slow. Many users are turned away by the drastic battery drain caused by continuous sensing and processing. In this paper, we propose CoMon+, a novel cooperative context monitoring system, which addresses the energy problem through opportunistic cooperation among nearby users. For effective cooperation, we develop a benefit-aware negotiation method to maximize the energy benefit of context sharing. CoMon+ employs heuristics to detect cooperators who are likely to remain in the vicinity for a long period of time, and the negotiation method automatically devises a cooperation plan …

Tafloc: Time-Adaptive And Fine-Grained Device-Free Localization With Little Cost, Liqiong Chang, Jie Xiong, Xiaojiang Chen, Ju Wang, Junhao Hu, Wei Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many emerging applications drive the needs of device-free localization (DfL), in which the target can be localized without any device attached. Because of the ubiquitousness of WiFi infrastructures nowadays, the widely available Received Signal Strength (RSS) information at the WiFi Access points are commonly employed for localization purposes. However, current RSS based DfL systems have one main drawback hindering their real-life applications. That is, the RSS measurements (fingerprints) vary slowly in time even without any change in the environment and frequent updates of RSS at each location lead to a high human labor cost. In this paper, we propose an …

Api Recommendation System For Software Development, Ferdian Thung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, software developers often utilize existing third party libraries and make use of Application Programming Interface (API) to develop a software. However, it is not always obvious which library to use or whether the chosen library will play well with other libraries in the system. Furthermore, developers need to spend some time to understand the API to the point that they can freely use the API methods and putting the right parameters inside them. In this work, I plan to automatically recommend relevant APIs to developers. This API recommendation can be divided into multiple stages. First, we can recommend relevant …
