Federated learning is a new learning paradigm that jointly trains a model from multiple data sources without sharing raw data. For the practical deployment of federated learning, data source selection is compulsory due to the limited communication cost and budget in real-world applications. The necessity of data source selection is further amplified in presence of data heterogeneity among clients. Prior solutions are either low in efficiency with exponential time cost or lack theoretical guarantees. Inspired by the diminishing marginal accuracy phenomenon in federated learning, we study the problem from the perspective of submodular optimization. In this paper, we aim at …

Backup Automation Using Power Automate For Malaysian Vaccination Centres, Raadhesh Kannan, Chin Ji Jian
Journal of Informatics and Web Engineering
The Covid-19 pandemic has tested the world, especially the vaccine centres when it comes to logistics, maintenance of records, and issuing of vaccination certifications. The Malaysian vaccination centres (PPVs) known as Pusat Pemberian Vaksin in Malaysia have a secure, and reliable system to maintain records of who has been vaccinated and when. No system is fully secure and reliable, thus there needs to be a backup if anything happens to the records like data loss or tampering of records. Although the information flow is simplified using the MySejahtera app and scanning of QR codes, there is no contingency prepared should …

Journal of Informatics and Web Engineering
Software Requirements Prioritization (SRP) is one of the crucial processes in software requirements engineering. It presents a challenging task to decide among the pool of requirements and the variance of the stakeholder’s needs in prioritizing requirements. Semi-automated requirements prioritization is implemented in both manual and automatic processes. When prioritizing requirements, these aspects such as importance, time, cost and risk, should be taken into account. The emergence of machine learning is advancing to improve and automate the SRP process whereby decision making can be performed with minimal human intervention. Incorporating machine learning approaches in prioritization techniques can be implemented in the …

APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are reusable software libraries and are building blocks for modern rapid software development. Previous research shows that programmers frequently share and search for reviews of APIs on the mainstream software question and answer (Q&A) platforms like Stack Overflow, which motivates researchers to design tasks and approaches related to process API reviews automatically. Among these tasks, classifying API reviews into different aspects (e.g., performance or security), which is called the aspect-based API review classification, is of great importance. The current state-of-the-art (SOTA) solution to this task is based on the traditional machine learning algorithm. Inspired by the …

Smart contracts are Turing-complete programs running on the blockchain. They are immutable and cannot be modified, even when bugs are detected. Therefore, ensuring smart contracts are bug-free and well-designed before deploying them to the blockchain is extremely important. A contract defect is an error, flaw or fault in a smart contract that causes it to produce an incorrect or unexpected result, or to behave in unintended ways. Detecting and removing contract defects can avoid potential bugs and make programs more robust. Our previous work defined 20 contract defects for smart contracts and divided them into five impact levels. According to …

Material identification and target imaging play an important role in many applications. This paper introduces TagScan, a system that can identify the material type and image the horizontal cut of a target simultaneously with cheap commodity Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) devices. The key intuition is that different materials and/or target sizes cause different amounts of phase and RSS (Received Signal Strength) changes, when radio frequency (RF) signal penetrates through the target. Multiple challenges need to be addressed before we can turn the idea into a functional system, including (i) indoor environments exhibit rich multipath which breaks the linear relationship between the …

Developing An Ios Game Application: Magnet Hockey, Trevor D. Wysong
The Graduate Review
Mobile application development requires mindful and meticulous planning. Application design should be responsive and intuitive so that navigation feels natural for the user. All targeted devices should be offered a relatively consistent experience. To ensure this, app performance needs to be closely monitored and different screen sizes and aspect ratios need to be considered when scaling. For an app to become attractive to many people, it should either be competitive with similar apps or be unique and interesting enough to entice people to download it. A unique app should couple familiar elements with new components or twists [8]. People are …

Improving software performance through configuration parameter tuning is a common activity during software maintenance. Beyond traditional performance metrics like latency, mobile app developers are interested in reducing app energy usage. Some mobile apps have centralized locations for parameter tuning, similar to databases and operating systems, but it is common for mobile apps to have hundreds of parameters scattered around the source code. The correlation between these "deep" parameters and app energy usage is unclear. Researchers have studied the energy effects of deep parameters in specific modules, but we lack a systematic understanding of the energy impact of mobile deep parameters. …

To accelerate software development, developers frequently search and reuse existing code snippets from a large-scale codebase, e.g., GitHub. Over the years, researchers proposed many information retrieval (IR)-based models for code search, but they fail to connect the semantic gap between query and code. An early successful deep learning (DL)-based model DeepCS solved this issue by learning the relationship between pairs of code methods and corresponding natural language descriptions. Two major advantages of DeepCS are the capability of understanding irrelevant/noisy keywords and capturing sequential relationships between words in query and code. In this article, we proposed an IR-based model CodeMatcher that …

Change-level defect prediction is widely referred to as just-in-time (JIT) defect prediction since it identifies a defect-inducing change at the check-in time, and researchers have proposed many approaches based on the language-independent change-level features. These approaches can be divided into two types: supervised approaches and unsupervised approaches, and their effectiveness has been verified on Java or C++ projects. However, whether the language-independent change-level features can effectively identify the defects of JavaScript projects is still unknown. Additionally, many researches have confirmed that supervised approaches outperform unsupervised approaches on Java or C++ projects when considering inspection effort. However, whether supervised JIT defect …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Automatic code documentation generation has been a crucial task in the field of software engineering. It not only relieves developers from writing code documentation but also helps them to understand programs better. Specifically, deep-learning-based techniques that leverage large-scale source code corpora have been widely used in code documentation generation. These works tend to use automatic metrics (such as BLEU, METEOR, ROUGE, CIDEr, and SPICE) to evaluate different models. These metrics compare generated documentation to reference texts by measuring the overlapping words. Unfortunately, there is no evidence demonstrating the correlation between these metrics and human judgment. We conduct experiments on two …

User experience of mobile apps is an essential ingredient that can influence the user base and app revenue. To ensure good user experience and assist app development, several prior studies resort to analysis of app reviews, a type of repository that directly reflects user opinions about the apps. Accurately responding to the app reviews is one of the ways to relieve user concerns and thus improve user experience. However, the response quality of the existing method relies on the pre-extracted features from other tools, including manually labelled keywords and predicted review sentiment, which may hinder the generalizability and flexibility of …

Software engineering is knowledge-intensive and requires software developers to continually search for knowledge, often on community question answering platforms such as Stack Overflow. Such information sharing platforms do not exist in isolation, and part of the evidence that they exist in a broader software documentation ecosystem is the common presence of hyperlinks to other documentation resources found in forum posts. With the goal of helping to improve the information diffusion between Stack Overflow and other documentation resources, we conducted a study to answer the question of how and why documentation is referenced in Stack Overflow threads. We sampled and classified …

Passwords are pervasively used to authenticate users' identities in mobile apps. To secure passwords against attacks, protection is applied to the password authentication protocol (PAP). The implementation of the protection scheme becomes an important factor in protecting PAP against attacks. We focus on two basic protection in Android, i.e., SSL/TLS-based PAP and timestamp-based PAP. Previously, we proposed an automated tool, GLACIATE, to detect authentication flaws. We were curious whether orchestration (i.e., involving manual-effort) works better than automation. To answer this question, we propose an orchestrated approach, AUTHEXPLOIT and compare its effectiveness GLACIATE. We study requirements for correct implementation of PAP …

Being able to access software in daily life is vital for everyone, and thus accessibility is a fundamental challenge for software development. However, given the number of accessibility issues reported by many users, e.g., in app reviews, it is not clear if accessibility is widely integrated into current software projects and how software projects address accessibility issues. In this article, we report a study of the critical challenges and benefits of incorporating accessibility into software development and design. We applied a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach for gathering data from 15 interviews and 365 survey respondents from 26 countries across …

Microservices-based applications consist of loosely coupled, independently deployable services that encapsulate units of functionality. To implement larger application processes, these microservices must communicate and collaborate. Typically, this follows one of two patterns: (1) choreography, in which communication is done via asynchronous message-passing; or (2) orchestration, in which a controller is used to synchronously manage the process flow. Choosing the right pattern requires the resolution of some trade-offs concerning coupling, chattiness, visibility, and design. To address this problem, we propose a decision framework for microservices collaboration patterns that helps solution architects to crystallize their goals, compare the key factors, and then …

Driver status monitoring systems are a vital component of smart cars in the future, especially in the era when an increasing amount of time is spent in the vehicle. The heart rate (HR) is one of the most important physiological signals of driver status. To infer HR of drivers, the mainstream of existing research focused on capturing subtle heartbeat-induced vibration of the torso or leveraged photoplethysmography (PPG) that detects cardiac cycle-related blood volume changes in the microvascular. However, existing approaches rely on dedicated sensors that are expensive and cumbersome to be integrated or are vulnerable to ambient noise. Moreover, their …

In Android malware classification, the distribution of training data among classes is often imbalanced. This causes the learning algorithm to bias towards the dominant classes, resulting in mis-classification of minority classes. One effective way to improve the performance of classifiers is the synthetic generation of minority instances. One pioneer technique in this area is Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and since its publication in 2002, several variants of SMOTE have been proposed and evaluated on various imbalanced datasets. However, these techniques have not been evaluated in the context of Android malware detection. Studies have shown that the performance of SMOTE …

Smart contracts have obtained much attention and are crucial for automatic financial and business transactions. For end-users who have never seen the source code, they can read the user notice shown in end-user client to understand what a transaction does of a smart contract function. However, due to time constraints or lack of motivation, user notice is often missing during the development of smart contracts. For endusers who lack the information of the user notices, there is no easy way for them to check the code semantics of the smart contracts. Thus, in this paper, we propose a new approach …
