Boosting Just-In-Time Defect Prediction With Specific Features Of C/C++ Programming Languages In Code Changes, Chao Ni, Xiaodan Xu, Kaiwen Yang, David Lo
Boosting Just-In-Time Defect Prediction With Specific Features Of C/C++ Programming Languages In Code Changes, Chao Ni, Xiaodan Xu, Kaiwen Yang, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Just-in-time (JIT) defect prediction can identify changes as defect-inducing ones or clean ones and many approaches are proposed based on several programming language-independent change-level features. However, different programming languages have different characteristics and consequently may affect the quality of software projects. Meanwhile, the C programming language, one of the most popular ones, is widely used to develop foundation applications (i.e., operating system, database, compiler, etc.) in IT companies and its change-level characteristics on project quality have not been fully investigated. Additionally, whether open-source C projects have similar important features to commercial projects has not been studied much.To address the aforementioned …

She Elicits Requirements And He Tests: Software Engineering Gender Bias In Large Language Models, Christoph Treude, Hideaki Hata
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Implicit gender bias in software development is a well-documented issue, such as the association of technical roles with men. To address this bias, it is important to understand it in more detail. This study uses data mining techniques to investigate the extent to which 56 tasks related to software development, such as assigning GitHub issues and testing, are affected by implicit gender bias embedded in large language models. We systematically translated each task from English into a genderless language and back, and investigated the pronouns associated with each task. Based on translating each task 100 times in different permutations, we …
Code Generation Based On Inference And Controlled Natural Language Input, Howard R. Dittmer
Code Generation Based On Inference And Controlled Natural Language Input, Howard R. Dittmer
College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations
Over time the level of abstraction embodied in programming languages has continued to grow. Paradoxically, most programming languages still require programmers to conform to the language's rigid constructs. These constructs have been implemented in the name of efficiency for the computer. However, the continual increase in computing power allows us to consider techniques not so limited. To this end, we have created CABERNET, a Controlled Natural Language (CNL) based approach to program creation. CABERNET allows programmers to use a simple outline-based syntax. This syntax enables increased programmer efficiency.
CNLs have previously been used to document requirements. We have taken this …

Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics Presentations
Text mining and text analysis is a way of understanding text documents using r coding that is more frequently used for numbered data. It helps with understanding portions of the text and drawing conclusions from there. This research looks specifically at the Adam Smith required documents that are used in the CIE course designated for freshmen. It looks at sentiments of the documents, including word sentiment, sentence sentiment, page and overall document sentiment as well. It provides visuals of word clouds to portray word frequency, tf-idf (which is explained in the presentation) and bigram analysis.

As computer science (CS) education becomes more prevalent in K-12 instruction, it is critical for educators, researchers, and curriculum developers to identify culturally responsive and pedagogically inclusive approaches that can increase participation, access, and feelings of belonging for students from historically marginalized communities. In response, we developed an equity-centered curricular framework and illustrative crosswalk that synchronizes three distinct pedagogical approaches: culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and project-based learning (PBL). We describe the framework’s theoretical underpinnings and explain how this framework informed the development of an integrated elementary science+CS curricular unit and provide examples of its implementation. …
A Graphical User Interface Using Spatiotemporal Interpolation To Determine Fine Particulate Matter Values In The United States, Kelly M. Entrekin
A Graphical User Interface Using Spatiotemporal Interpolation To Determine Fine Particulate Matter Values In The United States, Kelly M. Entrekin
Honors College Theses
Fine particulate matter or PM2.5 can be described as a pollution particle that has a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller. These pollution particle values are measured by monitoring sites installed across the United States throughout the year. While these values are helpful, a lot of areas are not accounted for as scientists are not able to measure all of the United States. Some of these unmeasured regions could be reaching high PM2.5 values over time without being aware of it. These high values can be dangerous by causing or worsening health conditions, such as cardiovascular and lung diseases. Within …

Too many options can be a problem, which is the case for Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). As there are many such APIs, with many more being introduced periodically, it raises the problem of choosing which API to be recommended. Furthermore, numerous APIs are commonly used together with other complementary third-party APIs. It can be challenging for developers to understand how to use each API and to remember all the complementary APIs for the API they want to use. Therefore, an accurate API recommendation approach can improve developers' efficiency in implementing certain functionality. Several approaches have been developed to automatically recommend …

Large-Scale Identification And Analysis Of Factors Impacting Simple Bug Resolution Times In Open Source Software Repositories, Elia Eiroa-Lledo, Rao Hamza Ali, Gabriela Pinto, Jillian Anderson, Erik Linstead
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
One of the most prominent issues the ever-growing open-source software community faces is the abundance of buggy code. Well-established version control systems and repository hosting services such as GitHub and Maven provide a checks-and-balances structure to minimize the amount of buggy code introduced. Although these platforms are effective in mitigating the problem, it still remains. To further the efforts toward a more effective and quicker response to bugs, we must understand the factors that affect the time it takes to fix one. We apply a custom traversal algorithm to commits made for open source repositories to determine when “simple stupid …

Comparing Boys’ And Girls’ Attitudes Toward Computer Science, Danielle Scott, Amiee Zou, Sharin Rawhiya Jacob, Debra Richardson, Mark Warschauer
Journal of Computer Science Integration
Women are severely underrepresented in computer science (CS) degrees and careers. While student interest is a key predictor of success, little is known about how elementary students from underserved groups, such as girls, develop their interest in CS. To address this issue, we examined the differences in attitudes between upper elementary girls and boys towards CS after participating in a yearlong, inquiry-based CS curriculum designed for diverse learners. Pre-and-post surveys on students’ attitudes towards CS (n = 108) were delivered before and after student participation in the curriculum. Results from the survey showed only two demonstrated significant differences between boys …

Word in context (WiC) task aims to determine whether a target word’s occurrences in two sentences share the same sense. In this paper, we propose a Contrastive Learning WiC (CLWiC) framework to improve the learning of sentence/word representations and classification of target word senses in the sentence pair when performing WiC on lowresource languages. In representation learning, CLWiC trains a pre-trained language model’s ability to cope with lowresource languages using both unsupervised and supervised contrastive learning. The WiC classifier learning further finetunes the language model with WiC classification loss under two classifier architecture options, SGBERT and WiSBERT, which use single-encoder …

Learning Control Policies For Stochastic Systems With Reach-Avoid Guarantees, Dorde Zikelic, Mathias Lechner, A. Thomas Henzinger, Krishnendu Chatterjee
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We study the problem of learning controllers for discrete-time non-linear stochastic dynamical systems with formal reach-avoid guarantees. This work presents the first method for providing formal reach-avoid guarantees, which combine and generalize stability and safety guarantees, with a tolerable probability threshold p ∈ [0,1] over the infinite time horizon in general Lipschitz continuous systems. Our method leverages advances in machine learning literature and it represents formal certificates as neural networks. In particular, we learn a certificate in the form of a reach-avoid supermartingale (RASM), a novel notion that we introduce in this work. Our RASMs provide reachability and avoidance guarantees …

Recent breakthroughs in large language models (LLMs) have led to the development of tools like ChatGPT and Bing Chat, which can produce texts comparable to those written by competent writers. The affordances of these tools encourage users to offload large parts of their thinking and writing onto the LLM. But in doing so, users surrender autonomy and authorship over their writing. Could LLMs instead encourage writers to reflect on texts that they wrote themselves? Could these reflections lead them to make meaningful revisions to their texts? Our goal is to provide writers with a tool that promotes reflection and encourages …

The SeaLion mission architecture team sought to create a model-based systems engineering approach to assist improving CubeSat success rates as well as for the SeaLion CubeSat project to guide an implementation for the flight software. This is important because university CubeSat teams are growing in number but often have untrained students as their core personnel. This was done using a document-as-code, or docs-as-code, approach. With this the team created tools for the systems architecture with the Mach 30 Modeling Language to create an architecture that is easy to learn and use even for newly admitted team members with little to …
