On Learning Languages From Positive Data And A Limited Number Of Short Counterexamples, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber Nov 2005

On Learning Languages From Positive Data And A Limited Number Of Short Counterexamples, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

We consider two variants of a model for learning languages in the limit from positive data and a limited number of short negative counterexamples (counterexamples are considered to be short if they are smaller that the largest element of input seen so far). Negative counterexamples to a conjecture are examples which belong to the conjectured language but do not belong to the input language. Within this framework, we explore how/when learners using n short (arbitrary) negative counterexamples can be simulated (or simulate) using least short counterexamples or just `no' answers from a teacher. We also study how a limited number …

Agile Modeling, Agile Software Development, And Extreme Programming: The State Of Research, John Erickson, Kalle Lyytinen, Keng Siau Oct 2005

Agile Modeling, Agile Software Development, And Extreme Programming: The State Of Research, John Erickson, Kalle Lyytinen, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While there are many claims for the successful use of extreme programming (XP) and agile modeling (AM), and the proponents can often be vocal in the extreme regarding their supposed benefits, research evidence supporting proponents' claims is somewhat lacking. Currently, the only research appearing to investigate the phenomena consists of two prominent streams. A small number of case studies and experience reports that generally promote the success of XP in various development environments, and a well-established stream of research into pair programming has generated results that in part support the idea of XP. Research into AM appears to be even …

Enhanced Risk Analysis-Relative Impact Factorization, Basit Shahzad, Tanveer Afzal, Rizwana Irfan Aug 2005

Enhanced Risk Analysis-Relative Impact Factorization, Basit Shahzad, Tanveer Afzal, Rizwana Irfan

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Software engineering is an area of development which always has the risk factor present and software engineering can hardly be done on some straight line. So, the manager has to handle the dynamically changing circumstances in order to complete the job. The target of development team is to develop the software according to the requirements within specified time. Wide variety of risks I are present that may grab the development effort. A good manager must ensure that all measures have been taken against the risks that may possibly come. This paper focuses on determining the relative impact of risk factors …

An Investigation Into The Continued Use Of Unified Modeling Language (Uml) In Information Systems Development, Keng Siau, X. Tan Aug 2005

An Investigation Into The Continued Use Of Unified Modeling Language (Uml) In Information Systems Development, Keng Siau, X. Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As the de facto standard for object-oriented modeling language, UML is expected to play an increasingly important role in information systems development. The long-term viability and eventual success of UML depend, to a great extent, on the continued use by UML users such as developers and analysts. Systematic investigations on UML’s continued use have been missing from contemporary discussions. Our study attempts to fill this gap in the literature. We developed a research model, which is primarily based on the Expectation Disconfirmation Theory (EDT). According to this model, UML users’ perceived discrepancy between pre-adoption expectation and post-adoption perceived performance, which …

Synthesis Of Distributed Processes From Scenario-Based Specifications, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong Jul 2005

Synthesis Of Distributed Processes From Scenario-Based Specifications, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Given a set of sequence diagrams, the problem of synthesis is of deciding whether there exists a satisfying object system and if so, synthesize one automatically. It is crucial in the development of complex systems, since sequence diagrams serve as the manifestation of use cases and if synthesizable they could lead directly to implementation. It is even more interesting (and harder) if the synthesized object system is distributed. In this paper, we propose a systematic way of synthesizing distributed processes from Live Sequence Charts. The basic idea is to first construct a CSP specification from the LSC specification, and then …

Automatically Discovering The Number Of Clusters In Web Page Datasets, Zhongmei Yao Jun 2005

Automatically Discovering The Number Of Clusters In Web Page Datasets, Zhongmei Yao

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Clustering is well-suited for Web mining by automatically organizing Web pages into categories, each of which contains Web pages having similar contents. However, one problem in clustering is the lack of general methods to automatically determine the number of categories or clusters. For the Web domain in particular, currently there is no such method suitable for Web page clustering. In an attempt to address this problem, we discover a constant factor that characterizes the Web domain, based on which we propose a new method for automatically determining the number of clusters in Web page data sets. We discover that the …

Rapid Prototyping For The Design Of Virtual Worlds, Prabhu V. Krishnan Apr 2005

Rapid Prototyping For The Design Of Virtual Worlds, Prabhu V. Krishnan

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Development of Virtual Reality (VR) applications is challenging where application developers are required to have expertise in the target VR technologies along with the problem domain expertise. New VR technologies impose a significant learning curve to even the most experienced VR developer. The proposed solution relies on synthesis to automate the migration of a VR application to a new unfamiliar VR platform/technology. To solve the problem, the Common Scene Definition Framework (CSDF) was developed, that serves as a superset/model representation of the target virtual world. Input modules were developed to populate the framework with the capabilities of the virtual world …

Programmable Process Flow Networks, Filip D. Cuckov Apr 2005

Programmable Process Flow Networks, Filip D. Cuckov

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A model that introduces programmability to processes occurring in a cargo terminal simulation through the use of a process language is presented in this thesis. The model provides a means for a straight-forward definition, and redefinition of changing processes, their incorporation in the simulation architecture and efficient execution. The model was built to investigate a solution for transforming the cargo terminal simulation CPortS into a process-oriented simulation without hard-coded processes. The approach taken separates the system into an architecture and a set of processes which utilize and interact with the architecture's resources and infrastructure. The processes that take place within …

An Empirical Study: Usage Of The Unified Modeling Language In The Bachelor Of Science And Master Of Science Degree Programs At California State University, San Bernardino, Cynthia Patrice Farquhar

Theses Digitization Project

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) became part of the curriculum in the Department of Computer Science at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) in September 1997. The intent was to integrate the object-oriented paradigm in the undergraduate courses. Subsequently, this use has shifted to the graduate level. The purpose of this thesis is: 1) to determine what the students know about UML, 2) to reveal if the students were using UML, 3) to clarify how students use the UML.

Jess – A Java Security Scanner For Eclipse, Russell Spitler Jan 2005

Jess – A Java Security Scanner For Eclipse, Russell Spitler

Honors Theses

Secure software is the responsibility of every developer. In order to help a developer with this responsibility there are many automated source code security auditors. These tools perform a variety of functions, from finding calls to insecure functions to poorly generated random numbers. These programs have existed for years and perform the security audit with varying degrees of success.

Largely missing in the world of programming is such a security auditor for the Java programming language. Currently, Fortify Software produces the only Java source code security auditor; this is a commercially available package.

This void is what inspired JeSS, Java …
