Theoretical And Practical Complexity Of Unified Modeling Language: Delphi Study And Metrics Analyses, J. Erickson, Keng Siau
Theoretical And Practical Complexity Of Unified Modeling Language: Delphi Study And Metrics Analyses, J. Erickson, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Systems have become increasingly complex, and as a result development methods have become more complex as well. The unified modeling language (UML) has been criticized for the often cited and sometimes over- whelming complexity it presents to its users, and those seeking to learn to use it. Using Rossi and Brinkkemper’s (1996) complexity metrics, Siau and Cao (2001) completed a complexity analysis of UML and 36 other modeling techniques, finding that UML is indeed more complex than other techniques. Siau, Erickson and Lee (2002) proposed that Rossi and Brinkkemper’s metrics present the theoretical maximum complexity, known as theoretical complexity. This …
Fuzzy Modeling Of Electromagnetic Emissions From Portable Electronic Devices Onboard Commercial Aircraft, Madiha Jamil Jafri
Fuzzy Modeling Of Electromagnetic Emissions From Portable Electronic Devices Onboard Commercial Aircraft, Madiha Jamil Jafri
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The use of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) is prohibited during take-off and landing of an aircraft because PEDs may emit signals that can interfere with the aircraft's navigation and communication systems. The electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the aircraft's electronics due to PEDs emissions is examined for Boeing 737 and 747 aircraft. This work, funded by the NASA Graduate Researchers Program, uses Interference Path Loss (IPL) data, collected by researchers from NASA Langley Research Center, Eagles Wings Inc. and United Airlines on several out-of-service United B737 and B747 airplanes.
B737 and B747 IPL data has been analyzed using a graphical analysis …

A transformation has been occurring in the architectural model for computer-based application intense software systems. This new model, software-as-a-service, will have a profound impact on the design and development of software for many years to come and as such college level computing curriculums will need to incorporate the concepts and methodologies associated with this new architecture. The platform is built upon a view of interrelated, distributed peer-level software modules and components that work in tandem to achieve specified functional goals. From Microsoft's viewpoint, migration to the new platform requires a radical shift in the software development lifecycle. It is becoming …
Staging Transformations For Multimodal Web Interaction Management, Michael Narayan, Christopher Williams, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan
Staging Transformations For Multimodal Web Interaction Management, Michael Narayan, Christopher Williams, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Multimodal interfaces are becoming increasingly ubiquitous with the advent of mobile devices, accessibility considerations, and novel software technologies that combine diverse interaction media. In addition to improving access and delivery capabilities, such interfaces enable flexible and personalized dialogs with websites, much like a conversation between humans. In this paper, we present a software framework for multimodal web interaction management that supports mixed-initiative dialogs between users and websites. A mixed-initiative dialog is one where the user and the website take turns changing the flow of interaction. The framework supports the functional specification and realization of such dialogs using staging transformations – …
Program Transformations For Information Personalization, Saverio Perugini
Program Transformations For Information Personalization, Saverio Perugini
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Personalization constitutes the mechanisms and technologies necessary to customize information access to the end-user. It can be defined as the automatic adjustment of information content, structure, and presentation. The central thesis of this dissertation is that modeling interaction explicitly in a representation, and studying how partial information can be harnessed in it by program transformations to direct the flow of the interaction, can provide insight into, reveal opportunities for, and define a model for personalized interaction. To evaluate this thesis, a formal modeling methodology is developed for personalizing interactions with information systems, especially hierarchical hypermedia, based on program transformations. The …
A Software Architecture For Reconstructability Analysis, Kenneth Willett, Martin Zwick
A Software Architecture For Reconstructability Analysis, Kenneth Willett, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Software packages for reconstructability analysis (RA), as well as for related log linear modeling, generally provide a fixed set of functions. Such packages are suitable for end‐users applying RA in various domains, but do not provide a platform for research into the RA methods themselves. A new software system, Occam3, is being developed which is intended to address three goals which often conflict with one another to provide: a general and flexible infrastructure for experimentation with RA methods and algorithms; an easily‐configured system allowing methods to be combined in novel ways, without requiring deep software expertise; and a system which …
Anomaly-Free Component Adaptation With Class Overriding, Atanas Radenski
Anomaly-Free Component Adaptation With Class Overriding, Atanas Radenski
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Software components can be implemented and distributed as collections of classes, then adapted to the needs of specific applications by means of subclassing. Unfortunately, subclassing in collections of related classes may require re-implementation of otherwise valid classes just because they utilize outdated parent classes, a phenomenon that is referred to as the subclassing anomaly. The subclassing anomaly is a serious problem since it can void the benefits of component-based programming altogether. We propose a code adaptation language mechanism called class overriding that is intended to overcome the subclassing anomaly. Class overriding does not create new and isolated derived classes as …

Supply Chains Integration: Architecture And Enabling Technologies, Keng Siau, Yuhong Tian
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
An effective and efficient supply chain is vital to the competitiveness and the survival of an organization. With the emergence of the e-business era, supply chain systems need to be able to extend beyond the traditional boundaries. This paper proposes integrated supply chain architecture (SCA) that combines the benefits of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and the various supply chain applications. Some necessary criteria for an integrated supply chain include completeness, security, flexibility, scalability, and interoperability. The enabling technologies for such a supply chain system include XML, DCOM, CORBA, SOAP, Net, and Semantic Web. Wireless and mobile technologies could further extend …
