The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a visual modeling language for object-oriented software development. Although the Object Management Group (OMG) adopted UML as its standard modeling language in 1997, the consensus in the academic community and the industry is that further research is needed to evaluate, enhance, extend, and formalize UML. A substantial amount of research has been conducted to this end, but most was based on common sense, informal observation, and intuition. This thesis implements a model for the shape and dimension invariant programming based on the notation of the Mathematics of Arrays (MOA) algebra. It focuses on dimension and shape invariance implementation, and their effect in parallel computing. A new design for the MOA notation is implemented that eliminates the need for another PSI-compiler, or a language extension to functional programming languages. The MOA notation is designed as a library of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), contains object oriented classes implemented in C++. This thesis presents a complete embedded programming model and software codes for a command-line user interface for CONCOA's gas regulator control system. Control Corporation of America (CONCOA) manufactures high-pressure gas regulators, which mechanically control the pressure at their outlets. Since the control system is based on mechanical regulators, adding or stopping gas flow from the system can cause manifold fluctuation that could further cause the pressure to rise or fall with time. This research examines the usefulness of a visual meta-language (VLGM Visual Language for Generic Modeling) developed for the specification of components and relations in a modeling domain. The language is designed to allow software tools to interpret specifications and automatically provide modeling environments. VLGM makes use of the object-orientated software engineering methodology. It defines four types of special classes and three types of relations between them. The Web Interface for Statistics Education (http://wise.cgu.edu) is a website built around interactive tutorials designed to teach introductory and advanced statistical concepts. The tutorials use Java applets that dynamically illustrate the statistical concepts being taught. By using Java applets, we teach statistics in a manner not possible in a traditional classroom environment. In this paper, we provide examples of the applets, illustrate how students use them, and we report the outcome of a study that examined tutorial effectiveness as a learning tool.

This paper describes work done to explore the common ground between two different ongoing research projects: the standardization of lexical and terminological resources, and the use of conceptual ontologies for information extraction and data integration. Specifically, this paper explores improving the generation of extraction ontologies through use of a comprehensive terminology database that has been represented in a standardized format for easy tool-based implementation.
