Improving Educational Delivery And Content In Juvenile Detention Centers, Yomna Elmousalami Mar 2024

Improving Educational Delivery And Content In Juvenile Detention Centers, Yomna Elmousalami

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Students in juvenile detention centers have the greatest need to receive improvements in educational delivery and content; however, they are one of the “truly disadvantaged” populations in terms of receiving those improvements. This work presents a qualitative data analysis based on a focus group meeting with stakeholders at a local Juvenile Detention Center. The current educational system in juvenile detention centers is based on paper worksheets, single-room style teaching methods, outdated technology, and a shortage of textbooks and teachers. In addition, detained students typically have behavioral challenges that are deemed "undesired" in society. As a result, many students miss classes …

Mechanistic Investigation Of C—C Bond Activation Of Phosphaalkynes With Pt(0) Complexes, Roberto M. Escobar, Abdurrahman C. Ateşin, Christian Müller, William D. Jones, Tülay Ateşin Mar 2024

Mechanistic Investigation Of C—C Bond Activation Of Phosphaalkynes With Pt(0) Complexes, Roberto M. Escobar, Abdurrahman C. Ateşin, Christian Müller, William D. Jones, Tülay Ateşin

Research Symposium

Carbon–carbon (C–C) bond activation has gained increased attention as a direct method for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. Due to the thermodynamic stability and kinetic inaccessibility of the C–C bonds, however, activation of C–C bonds by homogeneous transition-metal catalysts under mild homogeneous conditions is still a challenge. Most of the systems in which the activation occurs either have aromatization or relief of ring strain as the primary driving force. The activation of unstrained C–C bonds of phosphaalkynes does not have this advantage. This study employs Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate Pt(0)-mediated C–CP bond activation mechanisms in phosphaalkynes. Investigating the …

Towards Full Authorship With Ai: An Interactive User Interface For Supporting Revision, Kenneth C. Arnold, Edom Maru, Jiho Kim, Noelle Haviland, Ray Flanagan, Saron Melesse, Souad Yakubu, Zeai Sun

Summer Research

Recent breakthroughs in large language models (LLMs) have led to the development of tools like ChatGPT and Bing Chat, which can produce texts comparable to those written by competent writers. The affordances of these tools encourage users to offload large parts of their thinking and writing onto the LLM. But in doing so, users surrender autonomy and authorship over their writing. Could LLMs instead encourage writers to reflect on texts that they wrote themselves? Could these reflections lead them to make meaningful revisions to their texts? Our goal is to provide writers with a tool that promotes reflection and encourages …

Sql Injection & Web Application Security: A Python-Based Network Traffic Detection Model, Nyki Anderson

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

The Internet of Things (IoT) presents a great many challenges in cybersecurity as the world grows more and more digitally dependent. Personally identifiable information (PII) (i,e., names, addresses, emails, credit card numbers) is stored in databases across websites the world over. The greatest threat to privacy, according to the Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP) is SQL injection attacks (SQLIA) [1]. In these sorts of attacks, hackers use malicious statements entered into forms, search bars, and other browser input mediums to trick the web application server into divulging database assets. A proposed technique against such exploitation is convolution neural network …

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

During my undergraduate research, I spent my time working with a home automation program known as Helion, specifically, its Snapshot module. I was tasked with learning new material and completing part of the webpage that were unfinished. I also had to get a little creative when working on a design that users could find appealing. There were times I found working on Helion difficult but overall, working with Helion’s Snapshot Module is something that will help me improve with my undergraduate studies.

Autonomous Watercraft Simulation And Programming, Nicholas J. Savino

Student Scholar Showcase

Automation of various modes of transportation is thought to make travel more safe and efficient. Over the past several decades, advances to semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles have led to advanced autopilot systems on planes and boats, and an increasing popularity of self-driving cars. We predicted the motion of an autonomous vehicle using simulations in Python. The simulation models the motion of a small scale watercraft, which can then be built and programmed using an Arduino Microcontroller. We examined different control methods for a simulated rescue craft to reach a target. We also examined the effects of different factors, such as …

Mass Spectrometry Image Creator (Msic): Ion Mobility / Mass Spectrometry Imaging Workflow In Python, Stephen Creger, Julia Laskin, Daniela Mesa Sanchez

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Mass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful characterization technique that enables identification of compounds in complex mixtures. Acquiring mass spectra in a spatially-resolved manner (i.e. over a grid), allows the data to be used to generate images that show the spatial distribution and relative intensities of every compound in a sample. These images can be used to monitor and identify biomarkers, explore the metabolism of compounds within tissues, and much more. However, the limitations of mass spectrometry can result in ambiguous compound identifications. Another characterization tool, ion mobility spectrometry (IM) can be integrated into existing MS routines to address this problem; …

A Divide-And-Conquer Approach To Syntax-Guided Synthesis, Peiyuan Shen, Xiaokang Qiu Aug 2018

A Divide-And-Conquer Approach To Syntax-Guided Synthesis, Peiyuan Shen, Xiaokang Qiu

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Program synthesis aims to generate programs automatically from user-provided specifications. One critical research thrust is called Syntax-Guideds Synthesis. In addition to semantic specifications, the user should also provide a syntactic template of the desired program, which helps the synthesizer reduce the search space. The traditional symbolic approaches, such as CounterExample-Guided Inductive Synthesis (CEGIS) framework, does not scale to large search spaces. The goal of this project is to explore a compositional, divide-n-conquer approach that heuristically divides the synthesis task into subtasks and solves them separately. The idea is to decompose the function to be synthesized by creating a set of …

Driftwatch Pollinator Mapping Application, Shreyas G. Sundararaman, Larry Theller, Bernard Engel

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Over 65% percent of food consumed in the United States is pollinated by bees. Unfortunately, due to poor farming practices, pesticides are sprayed in bee sensitive areas unknowingly and as a result, the bee population is dwindling at an alarming rate. With lesser bees to pollinate crops, produce is compromised on a very large scale and this could have disastrous impacts on the nation's needs for food. Apiarists and beehive owners face the major responsibility of ensuring that their hives aren't affected by dangerous insecticides and pesticides from the farming areas that they might visit during their crop pollination cycles …
