Weavecc: Symbolically-Guided Joint Exploration Of Inputs And Schedules For Concurrency Bug Detection, William Philip Dinauer May 2026

Weavecc: Symbolically-Guided Joint Exploration Of Inputs And Schedules For Concurrency Bug Detection, William Philip Dinauer

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Concurrent programs introduce a class of bugs that depend jointly on both program inputs and thread schedules. Exposing these bugs requires simultaneously reasoning about which code paths are reachable and which thread interleavings are possible. At the same time, many existing tools handle the problem insufficiently. Race detectors observe only the interleavings that the OS happens to produce. Fuzzers explore inputs without controlling schedules. Tools that address both dimensions together exist, but are built on interpretation-based symbolic executors that incur considerable overhead.

We present WeaveCC, a practical concurrency testing tool for C/C++ programs that jointly explores inputs and thread schedules. …

Using Siamese Neural Networks To Effectively Detect Trojans In Fpgas When Trojans Manipulate Encryption Operations At The Bitstream Level, Kylie Arnett May 2026

Using Siamese Neural Networks To Effectively Detect Trojans In Fpgas When Trojans Manipulate Encryption Operations At The Bitstream Level, Kylie Arnett

Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)

This research investigates security vulnerabilities in Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) at the bitstream level, focusing on hardware trojans (HTs) that manipulate encryption operations. This study addresses two critical questions: (1) The feasibility of exploiting FPGA bitstreams to selectively bypass encryption operations when a predefined input pattern is observed (all ones), thereby exposing sensitive data, and (2) the efficacy of Siamese Neural Networks (SNNs) in detecting such trojans with high accuracy. FPGAs are vulnerable to malicious modifications during manufacturing or deployment, posing risks to data integrity and system functionality. In this work, a trojan is inserted into a Xilinx series-7 FPGA …

Comparative Analysis Of Classical And Machine Learning Pathfinding Approaches, Miguel Gapud May 2025

Comparative Analysis Of Classical And Machine Learning Pathfinding Approaches, Miguel Gapud

Honors Theses

Pathfinding is an essential task for any autonomous robot. Graph-based classical pathfinding algorithms and machine learning approaches have both been used for this end, but they are often not compared against each other. An implementation of end-to-end (E2E) pathfinding using Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and an Alexnet architecture is compared against an implementation of Hybrid A*. A digital twin in Unity3D is used as the testing environment with the Clearpath Dingo as the pathfinding robot. In machine learning, the robot is controlled using PPO through ROS-Noetic with a camera as its sensor. Hybrid A* and its controls are implemented directly …

Turbulence Prediction Using Non-Linear Phase Space Analysis, Jeremy Quijano Mar 2025

Turbulence Prediction Using Non-Linear Phase Space Analysis, Jeremy Quijano

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters

Our research presents a novel approach for turbulence prediction in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using a non-linear phase space analysis (NLPSA) and threshold algorithm. NLPSA has been utilized in medical applications to predict seizures, as well as in cybersecurity to detect malicious control and utilization of computing systems. NLPSA uses time-series data to learn the normal operating state of the system, then sets a threshold to predict when the system becomes abnormal. Turbulence prediction is similar, such that a fluid system changes from normal to abnormal. Turbulence prediction methods currently utilize machine learning tools, such as convolutional neural networks …

Using Machine Learning Models To Improve The Cyber Physical Security Of Drones, Sean Lee, Aviv Segev Mar 2025

Using Machine Learning Models To Improve The Cyber Physical Security Of Drones, Sean Lee, Aviv Segev

Shelby Hall Graduate Research Forum Posters

This research proposes a new manner of implementing machine learning models such that, when applied on a drone, it will be able to accurately identify and maintain the authenticity of the entity sending the control data to the drone. To begin with, the drone will, for a pre-determined amount of signals received per unit time, determine the average signal strength (RSSI) of them and use that average to determine the approximate distance between the drone and the source of those signals. This single data point will be fed into a custom implementation of the SCluStream algorithm (a real-time clustering machine …

Taming The Data In The Internet Of Vehicles, Shahab Tayeb Jan 2022

Taming The Data In The Internet Of Vehicles, Shahab Tayeb

Mineta Transportation Institute

As an emerging field, the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has a myriad of security vulnerabilities that must be addressed to protect system integrity. To stay ahead of novel attacks, cybersecurity professionals are developing new software and systems using machine learning techniques. Neural network architectures improve such systems, including Intrusion Detection System (IDSs), by implementing anomaly detection, which differentiates benign data packets from malicious ones. For an IDS to best predict anomalies, the model is trained on data that is typically pre-processed through normalization and feature selection/reduction. These pre-processing techniques play an important role in training a neural network to optimize …

A Fortran-Keras Deep Learning Bridge For Scientific Computing, Jordan Ott, Mike Pritchard, Natalie Best, Erik Linstead, Milan Curcic, Pierre Baldi

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Implementing artificial neural networks is commonly achieved via high-level programming languages such as Python and easy-to-use deep learning libraries such as Keras. These software libraries come preloaded with a variety of network architectures, provide autodifferentiation, and support GPUs for fast and efficient computation. As a result, a deep learning practitioner will favor training a neural network model in Python, where these tools are readily available. However, many large-scale scientific computation projects are written in Fortran, making it difficult to integrate with modern deep learning methods. To alleviate this problem, we introduce a software library, the Fortran-Keras Bridge (FKB). This two-way …

Novel Deep Learning Methods Combined With Static Analysis For Source Code Processing, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

It is desirable to combine machine learning and program analysis so that one can leverage the best of both to increase the performance of software analytics. On one side, machine learning can analyze the source code of thousands of well-written software projects that can uncover patterns that partially characterize software that is reliable, easy to read, and easy to maintain. On the other side, the program analysis can be used to define rigorous and unique rules that are only available in programming languages, which enrich the representation of source code and help the machine learning to capture the patterns better. …

Functional Programming For Systems Software: Implementing Baremetal Programs In Habit, Donovan Ellison Jul 2020

Functional Programming For Systems Software: Implementing Baremetal Programs In Habit, Donovan Ellison

University Honors Theses

Programming in a baremetal environment, directly on top of hardware with very little to help manage memory or ensure safety, can be dangerous even for experienced programmers. Programming languages can ease the burden on developers and sometimes take care of entire sets of errors. This is not the case for a language like C that will do almost anything you want, for better or worse. To operate in a baremetal environment often requires direct control over memory, but it would be nice to have that capability without sacrificing safety guarantees. Rust is a new language that aims to fit this …

Storage Management Strategy In Mobile Phones For Photo Crowdsensing, En Wang, Zhengdao Qu, Xinyao Liang, Xiangyu Meng, Yongjian Yang, Dawei Li, Weibin Meng

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In mobile crowdsensing, some users jointly finish a sensing task through the sensors equipped in their intelligent terminals. In particular, the photo crowdsensing based on Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) collects pictures for some specific targets or events and uploads them to nearby edge servers, which leads to richer data content and more efficient data storage compared with the common mobile crowdsensing; hence, it has attracted an important amount of attention recently. However, the mobile users prefer uploading the photos through Wifi APs (PoIs) rather than cellular networks. Therefore, photos stored in mobile phones are exchanged among users, in order to …

Lightweight And Efficient Neural Natural Language Processing With Quaternion Networks, Yi Tay, Aston Zhang, Anh Tuan Luu, Jinfeng Rao, Shuai Zhang, Shuohang Wang, Jie Fu, Siu Cheung Hui

SCIS Student Publications

Many state-of-the-art neural models for NLP are heavily parameterized and thus memory inefficient. This paper proposes a series of lightweight and memory efficient neural architectures for a potpourri of natural language processing (NLP) tasks. To this end, our models exploit computation using Quaternion algebra and hypercomplex spaces, enabling not only expressive inter-component interactions but also significantly (75%) reduced parameter size due to lesser degrees of freedom in the Hamilton product. We propose Quaternion variants of models, giving rise to new architectures such as the Quaternion attention Model and Quaternion Transformer. Extensive experiments on a battery of NLP tasks demonstrates the …

Seeing Eye To Eye: A Machine Learning Approach To Automated Saccade Analysis, Maigh Attre May 2019

Seeing Eye To Eye: A Machine Learning Approach To Automated Saccade Analysis, Maigh Attre

Honors Scholar Theses

Abnormal ocular motility is a common manifestation of many underlying pathologies particularly those that are neurological. Dynamics of saccades, when the eye rapidly changes its point of fixation, have been characterized for many neurological disorders including concussions, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and Parkinson’s disease. However, widespread saccade analysis for diagnostic and research purposes requires the recognition of certain eye movement parameters. Key information such as velocity and duration must be determined from data based on a wide set of patients’ characteristics that may range in eye shapes and iris, hair and skin pigmentation [36]. Previous work on saccade analysis has …

Scaling Human Activity Recognition Via Deep Learning-Based Domain Adaptation, Md Abdullah Hafiz Khan, Nirmalya Roy, Archan Misra Mar 2018

Scaling Human Activity Recognition Via Deep Learning-Based Domain Adaptation, Md Abdullah Hafiz Khan, Nirmalya Roy, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We investigate the problem of making human activityrecognition (AR) scalable–i.e., allowing AR classifiers trainedin one context to be readily adapted to a different contextualdomain. This is important because AR technologies can achievehigh accuracy if the classifiers are trained for a specific individualor device, but show significant degradation when the sameclassifier is applied context–e.g., to a different device located ata different on-body position. To allow such adaptation withoutrequiring the onerous step of collecting large volumes of labeledtraining data in the target domain, we proposed a transductivetransfer learning model that is specifically tuned to the propertiesof convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Our model, …

Pip: An Abstract Dataplane And Virtual Machine, Samuel Goodrick

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

We present an abstract machine and S-expression-based programming language to describe OpenFlow-style software-defined networking. The implemented Pip virtual machine and language provide facilities for packet decoding, safely writing and setting bitfields within packets, and switching based on packet contents. We have outlined an abstract syntax and structural operational semantics for Pip, thus allowing Pip programs to have predictable and provable properties. Pip allows for easy and safe access and writing to packet fields, as well as a programmable packet pipeline that will rarely stall.

Automated Android Application Permission Recommendation, Lingfeng Bao, David Lo, Xin Xia, Shanping Li Sep 2017

Automated Android Application Permission Recommendation, Lingfeng Bao, David Lo, Xin Xia, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The number of Android applications has increased rapidly as Android is becoming the dominant platform in the smartphone market. Security and privacy are key factors for an Android application to be successful. Android provides a permission mechanism to ensure security and privacy. This permission mechanism requires that developers declare the sensitive resources required by their applications. On installation or during runtime, users are required to agree with the permission request. However, in practice, there are numerous popular permission misuses, despite Android introducing official documents stating how to use these permissions properly. Some data mining techniques (e.g., association rule mining) have …

Ancr—An Adaptive Network Coding Routing Scheme For Wsns With Different-Success-Rate Links †, Xiang Ji, Anwen Wang, Chunyu Li, Chun Ma, Yao Peng, Dajin Wang, Qingyi Hua, Feng Chen, Dingyi Fang Aug 2017

Ancr—An Adaptive Network Coding Routing Scheme For Wsns With Different-Success-Rate Links †, Xiang Ji, Anwen Wang, Chunyu Li, Chun Ma, Yao Peng, Dajin Wang, Qingyi Hua, Feng Chen, Dingyi Fang

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

As the underlying infrastructure of the Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been widely used in many applications. Network coding is a technique in WSNs to combine multiple channels of data in one transmission, wherever possible, to save node’s energy as well as increase the network throughput. So far most works on network coding are based on two assumptions to determine coding opportunities: (1) All the links in the network have the same transmission success rate; (2) Each link is bidirectional, and has the same transmission success rate on both ways. However, these assumptions may not be …

Proactive And Reactive Strategies To Handle Surges In Urban Crowds, Jiali Du May 2017

Proactive And Reactive Strategies To Handle Surges In Urban Crowds, Jiali Du

Dissertations and Theses Collection

Most urban infrastructures are built to cater a planned capacity, yet surges in usage do happen in times (can be either expected or unexpected), and this has long been a major challenge for urban planner. In this thesis, I propose to study approaches handle surges in urban crowd movement. In particular, the surges in demand studied are limited to situations where a large crowd of commuters/visitors gather in a small vicinity, and I am concerned with their movements both within the vicinity and out of the vicinity (the egress from the vicinity). Significant crowd build-ups and congestions can be observed …

A Dynamic Programming Approach For Quickly Estimating Large Network-Based Mev Models, Tien Mai, Emma Frejinger, Mogens Fosgereau, Fabian Bastin Apr 2017

A Dynamic Programming Approach For Quickly Estimating Large Network-Based Mev Models, Tien Mai, Emma Frejinger, Mogens Fosgereau, Fabian Bastin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a way to estimate a family of static Multivariate Extreme Value (MEV) models with large choice sets in short computational time. The resulting model is also straightforward and fast to use for prediction. Following Daly and Bierlaire (2006), the correlation structure is defined by a rooted, directed graph where each node without successor is an alternative. We formulate a family of MEV models as dynamic discrete choice models on graphs of correlation structures and show that the dynamic models are consistent with MEV theory and generalize the network MEV model (Daly and Bierlaire, 2006). Moreover, we show that …

Techniques For Identifying Mobile Platform Vulnerabilities And Detecting Policy-Violating Applications, Mon Kywe Su Oct 2016

Techniques For Identifying Mobile Platform Vulnerabilities And Detecting Policy-Violating Applications, Mon Kywe Su

Dissertations and Theses Collection

Mobile systems are generally composed of three layers of software: application layer where third-party applications are installed, framework layer where Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are exposed, and kernel layer where low-level system operations are executed. In this dissertation, we focus on security and vulnerability analysis of framework and application layers. Security mechanisms, such as Android’s sandbox and permission systems, exist in framework layer, while malware scanners protects application layer. However, there are rooms for improvement in both mechanisms. For instance, Android’s permission system is known to be implemented in ad-hoc manner and not well-tested for vulnerabilities. Application layer also focuses …

We present a tele-immersive system that enables people to interact with each other in a virtual world using body gestures in addition to verbal communication. Beyond the obvious applications, including general online conversations and gaming, we hypothesize that our proposed system would be particularly beneficial to education by offering rich visual contents and interactivity. One distinct feature is the integration of egocentric pose recognition that allows participants to use their gestures to demonstrate and manipulate virtual objects simultaneously. This functionality enables the instructor to effectively and efficiently explain and illustrate complex concepts or sophisticated problems in an intuitive manner. The …

Video self modeling (VSM) is a behavioral intervention technique in which a learner models a target behavior by watching a video of him- or herself. In the field of speech language pathology, the approach of VSM has been successfully used for treatment of language in children with Autism and in individuals with fluency disorder of stuttering. Technical challenges remain in creating VSM contents that depict previously unseen behaviors. In this paper, we propose a novel system that synthesizes new video sequences for VSM treatment of patients with voice disorders. Starting with a video recording of a voice-disorder patient, the proposed …

Compression Of Video Tracking And Bandwidth Balancing Routing In Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks, Yin Wang, Jianjun Yang, Ju Shen, Bryson Payne, Juan Guo, Kun Hua

Computer Science Faculty Publications

There has been a tremendous growth in multimedia applications over wireless networks. Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks(WMSNs) have become the premier choice in many research communities and industry. Many state-of-art applications, such as surveillance, traffic monitoring, and remote heath care are essentially video tracking and transmission in WMSNs. The transmission speed is constrained by the big file size of video data and fixed bandwidth allocation in constant routing paths. In this paper, we present a CamShift based algorithm to compress the tracking of videos. Then we propose a bandwidth balancing strategy in which each sensor node is able to dynamically select …

Hole Detection And Shape-Free Representation And Double Landmarks Based Geographic Routing In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jianjun Yang, Zongming Fei, Ju Shen Feb 2015

Hole Detection And Shape-Free Representation And Double Landmarks Based Geographic Routing In Wireless Sensor Networks, Jianjun Yang, Zongming Fei, Ju Shen

Computer Science Faculty Publications

In wireless sensor networks, an important issue of geographic routing is “local minimum” problem, which is caused by a “hole” that blocks the greedy forwarding process. Existing geographic routing algorithms use perimeter routing strategies to find a long detour path when such a situation occurs. To avoid the long detour path, recent research focuses on detecting the hole in advance, then the nodes located on the boundary of the hole advertise the hole information to the nodes near the hole. Hence the long detour path can be avoided in future routing. We propose a heuristic hole detecting algorithm which identifies …

With the explosive growth of web-based cameras and mobile devices, billions of photographs are uploaded to the internet. We can trivially collect a huge number of photo streams for various goals, such as image clustering, 3D scene reconstruction, and other big data applications. However, such tasks are not easy due to the fact the retrieved photos can have large variations in their view perspectives, resolutions, lighting, noises, and distortions. Furthermore, with the occlusion of unexpected objects like people, vehicles, it is even more challenging to find feature correspondences and reconstruct realistic scenes. In this paper, we propose a structure-based image …
