Side-Channel Analysis On Post-Quantum Cryptography Algorithms, Tristen Teague
Side-Channel Analysis On Post-Quantum Cryptography Algorithms, Tristen Teague
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The advancements of quantum computers brings us closer to the threat of our current asymmetric cryptography algorithms being broken by Shor's Algorithm. NIST proposed a standardization effort in creating a new class of asymmetric cryptography named Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). These new algorithms will be resistant against both classical computers and sufficiently powerful quantum computers. Although the new algorithms seem mathematically secure, they can possibly be broken by a class of attacks known as side-channels attacks (SCA). Side-channel attacks involve exploiting the hardware that the algorithm runs on to figure out secret values that could break the security of the system. …
Exploiting Input Sanitization For Regex Denial Of Service, Efe Barlas, Xin Du, James C. Davis
Exploiting Input Sanitization For Regex Denial Of Service, Efe Barlas, Xin Du, James C. Davis
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Web services use server-side input sanitization to guard against harmful input. Some web services publish their sanitization logic to make their client interface more usable, e.g., allowing clients to debug invalid requests locally. However, this usability practice poses a security risk. Specifically, services may share the regexes they use to sanitize input strings — and regex-based denial of service (ReDoS) is an emerging threat. Although prominent service outages caused by ReDoS have spurred interest in this topic, we know little about the degree to which live web services are vulnerable to ReDoS.
In this paper, we conduct the first black-box …

Journal of Computer Science Integration
Prekindergarten to 12th-grade teachers of computer science (CS) face many challenges, including isolation, limited CS professional development resources, and low levels of CS teaching self-efficacy that could be mitigated through communities of practice (CoPs). This study used survey data from 420 PK–12 CS teacher members of a virtual CoP, CS for All Teachers, to examine the needs of these teachers and how CS teaching self-efficacy, community engagement, and sharing behaviors vary by teachers’ instructional experiences and school levels taught. Results show that CS teachers primarily join the CoP to gain high-quality pedagogical, assessment, and instructional resources. The study also found …

A Fortran-Keras Deep Learning Bridge For Scientific Computing, Jordan Ott, Mike Pritchard, Natalie Best, Erik Linstead, Milan Curcic, Pierre Baldi
Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Implementing artificial neural networks is commonly achieved via high-level programming languages such as Python and easy-to-use deep learning libraries such as Keras. These software libraries come preloaded with a variety of network architectures, provide autodifferentiation, and support GPUs for fast and efficient computation. As a result, a deep learning practitioner will favor training a neural network model in Python, where these tools are readily available. However, many large-scale scientific computation projects are written in Fortran, making it difficult to integrate with modern deep learning methods. To alleviate this problem, we introduce a software library, the Fortran-Keras Bridge (FKB). This two-way …
Demand-Driven Execution Using Future Gated Single Assignment Form, Omkar Javeri
Demand-Driven Execution Using Future Gated Single Assignment Form, Omkar Javeri
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This dissertation discusses a novel, previously unexplored execution model called Demand-Driven Execution (DDE), which executes programs starting from the outputs of the program, progressing towards the inputs of the program. This approach is significantly different from prior demand-driven reduction machines as it can execute a program written in an imperative language using the demand-driven paradigm while extracting both instruction and data level parallelism. The execution model relies on an executable Single Assignment Form which serves both as the internal representation of the compiler as well as the Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) of the machine. This work develops the instruction set …
V-Slam And Sensor Fusion For Ground Robots, Ejup Hoxha
V-Slam And Sensor Fusion For Ground Robots, Ejup Hoxha
Dissertations and Theses
In underground, underwater and indoor environments, a robot has to rely solely on its on-board sensors to sense and understand its surroundings. This is the main reason why SLAM gained the popularity it has today. In recent years, we have seen excellent improvement on accuracy of localization using cameras and combinations of different sensors, especially camera-IMU (VIO) fusion. Incorporating more sensors leads to improvement of accuracy, but also robustness of SLAM. However, while testing SLAM in our ground robots, we have seen a decrease in performance quality when using the same algorithms on flying vehicles. We have an additional sensor for ground …
Learning Personally Identifiable Information Transmission In Android Applications By Using Data From Fast Static Code Analysis, Nattanon Wongwiwatchai
Learning Personally Identifiable Information Transmission In Android Applications By Using Data From Fast Static Code Analysis, Nattanon Wongwiwatchai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The ease of use of mobile devices has resulted in a significant increase in the everyday use of mobile applications as well as the amount of personal information stored on devices. Users are becoming more aware of applications' access to their personal information, as well as the risk that these applications may unwittingly transmit Personally Identifiable Information (PII) to third-party servers. There is no simple way to determine whether or not an application transmits PII. If this information could be made available to users before installing new applications, they could weigh the pros and cons of having the risk of …
Preference Learning And Similarity Learning Perspectives On Personalized Recommendation, Duy Dung Le
Preference Learning And Similarity Learning Perspectives On Personalized Recommendation, Duy Dung Le
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Personalized recommendation, whose objective is to generate a limited list of items (e.g., products on Amazon, movies on Netflix, or pins on Pinterest, etc.) for each user, has gained extensive attention from both researchers and practitioners in the last decade. The necessity of personalized recommendation is driven by the explosion of available options online, which makes it difficult, if not downright impossible, for each user to investigate every option. Product and service providers rely on recommendation algorithms to identify manageable number of the most likely or preferred options to be presented to each user. Also, due to the limited screen …
Improving 3d Printed Prosthetics With Sensors And Motors, Rachel Zarin
Improving 3d Printed Prosthetics With Sensors And Motors, Rachel Zarin
Honors Projects
A 3D printed hand and arm prosthetic was created from the idea of adding bionic elements while keeping the cost low. It was designed based on existing models, desired functions, and materials available. A tilt sensor keeps the hand level, two motors move the wrist in two different directions, a limit switch signals the fingers to open and close, and another motor helps open and close the fingers. All sensors and motors were built on a circuit board, programmed using an Arduino, and powered by a battery. Other supporting materials include metal brackets, screws, guitar strings, elastic bands, small clamps, …
Developing 5gl Concepts From User Interactions, David Stuckless Meyer
Developing 5gl Concepts From User Interactions, David Stuckless Meyer
Masters Theses
In the fulfilling of the contracts generated in Test Driven Development, a developer could be said to act as a constraint solver, similar to those used by a 5th Generation Language(5GL). This thesis presents the hypothesis that 5GL linguistic mechanics, such as facts, rules and goals, will be emergent in the communications of developer pairs performing Test Driven Development, validating that 5GL syntax is congruent with the ways that practitioners communicate. Along the way, nomenclatures and linguistic patterns may be observed that could inform the design of future 5GL languages.

Certain HTTP Cookies on certain sites can be a source of content bias in archival crawls. Accommodating Cookies at crawl time, but not utilizing them at replay time may cause cookie violations, resulting in defaced composite mementos that never existed on the live web. To address these issues, we propose that crawlers store Cookies with short expiration time and archival replay systems account for values in the Vary header along with URIs.

Autonomous Watercraft Simulation And Programming, Nicholas J. Savino
Student Scholar Showcase
Automation of various modes of transportation is thought to make travel more safe and efficient. Over the past several decades, advances to semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles have led to advanced autopilot systems on planes and boats, and an increasing popularity of self-driving cars. We predicted the motion of an autonomous vehicle using simulations in Python. The simulation models the motion of a small scale watercraft, which can then be built and programmed using an Arduino Microcontroller. We examined different control methods for a simulated rescue craft to reach a target. We also examined the effects of different factors, such as …
Topical Co-Attention Networks For Hashtag Recommendation On Microblogs, Yang Li, Ting Liu, Jingwen Hu, Jing Jiang
Topical Co-Attention Networks For Hashtag Recommendation On Microblogs, Yang Li, Ting Liu, Jingwen Hu, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Hashtags provide a simple and natural way of organizing content in microblog services. Along with the fast growing of microblog services, the task of recommending hashtags for microblogs has been given increasing attention in recent years. However, much of the research depends on hand-crafted features. Motivated by the successful use of neural models for many natural language processing tasks, in this paper, we adopt an attention based neural network to learn the representation of a microblog post. Unlike previous works, which only focus on content attention of microblogs, we propose a novel Topical CoAttention Network (TCAN) that jointly models content …

The problem of forecasting market volatility is a difficult task for most fund managers. Volatility forecasts are used for risk management, alpha (risk) trading, and the reduction of trading friction. Improving the forecasts of future market volatility assists fund managers in adding or reducing risk in their portfolios as well as in increasing hedges to protect their portfolios in anticipation of a market sell-off event. Our analysis compares three existing financial models that forecast future market volatility using the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (VIX) to six machine/deep learning supervised regression methods. This analysis determines which models provide best …
A Compiler Target Model For Line Associative Registers, Paul S. Eberhart
A Compiler Target Model For Line Associative Registers, Paul S. Eberhart
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
LARs (Line Associative Registers) are very wide tagged registers, used for both register-wide SWAR (SIMD Within a Register )operations and scalar operations on arbitrary fields. LARs include a large data field, type tags, source addresses, and a dirty bit, which allow them to not only replace both caches and registers in the conventional memory hierarchy, but improve on both their functions. This thesis details a LAR-based architecture, and describes the design of a compiler which can generate code for a LAR-based design. In particular, type conversion, alignment, and register allocation are discussed in detail.
Feature-Based Transfer Learning In Natural Language Processing, Jianfei Yu
Feature-Based Transfer Learning In Natural Language Processing, Jianfei Yu
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In the past few decades, supervised machine learning approach is one of the most important methodologies in the Natural Language Processing (NLP) community. Although various kinds of supervised learning methods have been proposed to obtain the state-of-the-art performance across most NLP tasks, the bottleneck of them lies in the heavy reliance on the large amount of manually annotated data, which is not always available in our desired target domain/task. To alleviate the data sparsity issue in the target domain/task, an attractive solution is to find sufficient labeled data from a related source domain/task. However, for most NLP applications, due to …

Efficient Attribute-Based Encryption With Blackbox Traceability, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Ximeng Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Traitor tracing scheme can be used to identify a decryption key is illegally used in public-key encryption. In CCS’13, Liu et al. proposed an attribute-based traitor tracing (ABTT) scheme with blackbox traceability which can trace decryption keys embedded in a decryption blackbox/device rather than tracing a well-formed decryption key. However, the existing ABTT schemes with blackbox traceability are based on composite order group and the size of the decryption key depends on the policies and the number of system users. In this paper, we revisit blackbox ABTT and introduce a new primitive called attribute-based set encryption (ABSE) based on key-policy …

Source code terms such as method names and variable types are often different from conceptual words mentioned in a search query. This vocabulary mismatch problem can make code search inefficient. In this paper, we present COde voCABUlary (CoCaBu), an approach to resolving the vocabulary mismatch problem when dealing with free-form code search queries. Our approach leverages common developer questions and the associated expert answers to augment user queries with the relevant, but missing, structural code entities in order to improve the performance of matching relevant code examples within large code repositories. To instantiate this approach, we build GitSearch, a code …

Computational Thinking And Literacy, Sharin Rawhiya Jacob, Mark Warschauer
Journal of Computer Science Integration
Today’s students will enter a workforce that is powerfully shaped by computing. To be successful in a changing economy, students must learn to think algorithmically and computationally, to solve problems with varying levels of abstraction. These computational thinking skills have become so integrated into social function as to represent fundamental literacies. However, computer science has not been widely taught in K-12 schools. Efforts to create computer science standards and frameworks have yet to make their way into mandated course requirements. Despite a plethora of research on digital literacies, research on the role of computational thinking in the literature is sparse. …
Funqual: User-Defined, Statically-Checked Call Graph Constraints In C++, Andrew P. Nelson
Funqual: User-Defined, Statically-Checked Call Graph Constraints In C++, Andrew P. Nelson
Master's Theses
Static analysis tools can aid programmers by reporting potential programming mistakes prior to the execution of a program. Funqual is a static analysis tool that reads C++17 code ``in the wild'' and checks that the function call graph follows a set of rules which can be defined by the user. This sort of analysis can help the programmer to avoid errors such as accidentally calling blocking functions in time-sensitive contexts or accidentally allocating memory in heap-sensitive environments. To accomplish this, we create a type system whereby functions can be given user-defined type qualifiers and where users can define their own …

Comparative Study Of Deep Learning Models For Network Intrusion Detection, Brian Lee, Sandhya Amaresh, Clifford Green, Daniel Engels
SMU Data Science Review
In this paper, we present a comparative evaluation of deep learning approaches to network intrusion detection. A Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) is a critical component of every Internet connected system due to likely attacks from both external and internal sources. A NIDS is used to detect network born attacks such as Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, malware replication, and intruders that are operating within the system. Multiple deep learning approaches have been proposed for intrusion detection systems. We evaluate three models, a vanilla deep neural net (DNN), self-taught learning (STL) approach, and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based Long Short …

Scaling Human Activity Recognition Via Deep Learning-Based Domain Adaptation, Md Abdullah Hafiz Khan, Nirmalya Roy, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We investigate the problem of making human activityrecognition (AR) scalable–i.e., allowing AR classifiers trainedin one context to be readily adapted to a different contextualdomain. This is important because AR technologies can achievehigh accuracy if the classifiers are trained for a specific individualor device, but show significant degradation when the sameclassifier is applied context–e.g., to a different device located ata different on-body position. To allow such adaptation withoutrequiring the onerous step of collecting large volumes of labeledtraining data in the target domain, we proposed a transductivetransfer learning model that is specifically tuned to the propertiesof convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Our model, …
Integrated Reward Scheme And Surge Pricing In A Ride Sourcing Market, Hai Yang, Chaoyi Shao, Hai Wang, Jieping Ye
Integrated Reward Scheme And Surge Pricing In A Ride Sourcing Market, Hai Yang, Chaoyi Shao, Hai Wang, Jieping Ye
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Surge pricing is commonly used in on-demand ride-sourcing platforms (e.g., Uber, Lyft and Didi) to dynamically balance demand and supply. However, since the price for ride service cannot be unlimited, there is usually a reasonable or legitimate range of prices in practice. Such a constrained surge pricing strategy fails to balance demand and supply in certain cases, e.g., even adopting the maximum allowed price cannot reduce the demand to an affordable level during peak hours. In addition, the practice of surge pricing is controversial and has stimulated long debate regarding its pros and cons. In this paper, to address the …
