Effects Of Architecture On Information Leakage Of A Hardware Advanced Encryption Standard Implementation, Eric A. Koziel Sep 2012

Effects Of Architecture On Information Leakage Of A Hardware Advanced Encryption Standard Implementation, Eric A. Koziel

Theses and Dissertations

Side-channel analysis (SCA) is a threat to many modern cryptosystems. Many countermeasures exist, but are costly to implement and still do not provide complete protection against SCA. A plausible alternative is to design the cryptosystem using architectures that are known to leak little information about the cryptosystem's operations. This research uses several common primitive architectures for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and assesses the susceptibility of the full AES system to side-channel attack for various primitive configurations. A combined encryption/decryption core is also evaluated to determine if variation of high-level architectures affects leakage characteristics. These different configurations are evaluated under …

Structure And Randomness Of The Discrete Lambert Map, Jingjing Chen, Mark Lotts Jul 2011

Structure And Randomness Of The Discrete Lambert Map, Jingjing Chen, Mark Lotts

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We investigate the structure and cryptographic applications of the Discrete Lambert Map (DLM). The mapping is closely related to the Discrete Log Problem, but has received far less attention since it is considered to be a more complicated map that is likely even harder to invert. However, this mapping is quite important because it underlies the security of the ElGamal Digital Signature Scheme. Using functional graphs induced by this mapping, we were able to find non-random properties that could potentially be used to exploit the ElGamal DSS.

Networks - Ii: Overhead Analysis Of Security Implementation Using Ipsec, Muhammad Awais Azam, Zaka -Ul- Mustafa, Usman Tahir, S. M. Ahsan, Muhammad Adnan Naseem, Imran Rashid, Muhammad Adeel

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Authentication, access control, encryption and auditing make up the essential elements of network security. Researchers have dedicated a large amount of efforts to implement security features that fully incorporate the use of all these elements. Currently, data networks mainly provide authentication and confidentiality services. Confidentiality alone is not able to protect the system, thus, suitable security measures must be taken. However, this security is itself an overhead which must be accounted for. A trade-off must exist between performance and security. This trade-off must be carefully managed so as not to deteriorate the systems being secured. This calls for the true …

Using Trusted Computing Technology To Facilitate Security Enforcement In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao, Jianying Zhou Oct 2008

Using Trusted Computing Technology To Facilitate Security Enforcement In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao, Jianying Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Security enforcement in wireless sensor networks is by no means an easy task, due to the inherent resource-constrained nature of sensor nodes. To facilitate security enforcement, we propose to incorporate more powerful high-end Security Enforcement Facilitators (SEFs) into wireless sensor networks. In particular, the SEFs are equipped with TCG-compliant Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs) to protect cryptographic secrets, perform authenticated booting and attest their platform state to a remote base station. As such, the SEFs act as online trusted third parties toeffectively monitor the states of sensor nodes, help in keymanagement, simplify secure routing, and facilitate accesscontrol.

Increasing Security In The Physical Layer Of Wireless Communication, Luke Golygowski Dec 2007

Increasing Security In The Physical Layer Of Wireless Communication, Luke Golygowski

Australian Information Security Management Conference

This paper introduces a concept of increasing securing in the Physical layer (PHY) of wireless communication. It gives a short description of current status of wireless standards and their security. Despite the existence of advanced security protocols such as IEEE 802.11i or WLAN VPNs, wireless networks still remain vulnerable to denial-of-service (DoS) attacks aiming at PHY and Data Link Layers. The new solution challenges the problems with the currently defined PHY and Data Link layers. The concept introduced here, holds a promise of descending with some of the security measures to the lower layers of the TCP/IP and in this …

Implementation And Optimization Of The Advanced Encryption Standard Algorithm On An 8-Bit Field Programmable Gate Array Hardware Platform, Ryan J. Silva Mar 2007

Implementation And Optimization Of The Advanced Encryption Standard Algorithm On An 8-Bit Field Programmable Gate Array Hardware Platform, Ryan J. Silva

Theses and Dissertations

The contribution of this research is three-fold. The first is a method of converting the area occupied by a circuit implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to an equivalent as a measure of total gate count. This allows direct comparison between two FPGA implementations independent of the manufacturer or chip family. The second contribution improves the performance of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) on an 8-bit computing platform. This research develops an AES design that occupies less than three quarters of the area reported by the smallest design in current literature as well as significantly increases area efficiency. …

Cryptanalysis Of Pseudorandom Number Generators In Wireless Sensor Networks, Kevin M. Finnigin Mar 2006

Cryptanalysis Of Pseudorandom Number Generators In Wireless Sensor Networks, Kevin M. Finnigin

Theses and Dissertations

This work presents a brute-force attack on an elliptic curve cryptosystem implemented on UC Berkley's TinyOS operating system for wireless sensor networks. The attack exploits the short period of the pseudorandom number generator (PRNG) used by the cryptosystem to generate private keys. The attack assumes a laptop is listening promiscuously to network traffic for key messages and requires only the sensor node?s public key and network address to discover the private key. Experimental results show that roughly 50% of the address space leads to a private key compromise in 25 minutes on average. Furthermore, approximately 32% of the address space …

Validating Digital Signatures Without Ttp’S Time-Stamping And Certificate Revocation, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Oct 2003

Validating Digital Signatures Without Ttp’S Time-Stamping And Certificate Revocation, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In non-repudiation services where digital signatures usually serve as irrefutable cryptographic evidence for dispute resolution, trusted time-stamping and certificate revocation services, although very costly in practice, must be available, to prevent big loss due to compromising of the signing key. In [12], a new concept called intrusion-resilient signature was proposed to get rid of trusted time-stamping and certificate revocation services and a concrete scheme was presented. In this paper, we put forward a new scheme that can achieve the same effect in a much more efficient way. In our scheme, forward-secure signature serves as a building block that enables signature …

Stegfs: A Steganographic File System, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Xuan Zhou Mar 2003

Stegfs: A Steganographic File System, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Xuan Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While user access control and encryption can protect valuable data from passive observers, those techniques leave visible ciphertexts that are likely to alert an active adversary to the existence of the data, who can then compel an authorized user to disclose it. This paper introduces StegFS, a steganographic file system that aims to overcome that weakness by offering plausible deniability to owners of protected files. StegFS securely hides user-selected files in a file system so that, without the corresponding access keys, an attacker would not be able to deduce their existence, even if the attacker is thoroughly familiar with the …

Cryptanalysis Of A Digital Signature Scheme On Id-Based Key-Sharing Infrastructures, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Feb 2001

Cryptanalysis Of A Digital Signature Scheme On Id-Based Key-Sharing Infrastructures, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

At ISW’99, Nishioka, Hanaoka and Imai proposed a digital signature scheme on ID-based key-sharing infrastructures. That signature scheme is claimed to be secure if the discrete logarithm problem is hard to solve. Two schemes (the ID-type and the random-type schemes) based on the linear scheme for the Key Predistribution Systems (KPS) and the discrete logarithm problem (DLP) were given. In this paper we show that those two schemes fail to meet the nonrepudiation requirement: with negligible amount of computation, a signature could be forged. For the ID-type signature scheme, any verifier could forge a signature to raise repudiation between that …
