Multimodal Private Signatures, Khoa Nguyen, Fuchun Guo, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang Aug 2022

Multimodal Private Signatures, Khoa Nguyen, Fuchun Guo, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We introduce Multimodal Private Signature (MPS) - an anonymous signature system that offers a novel accountability feature: it allows a designated opening authority to learn some partial information op about the signer’s identity id, and nothing beyond. Such partial information can flexibly be defined as op = id (as in group signatures), or as op = 0 (like in ring signatures), or more generally, as op = Gj (id), where Gj (·) is a certain disclosing function. Importantly, the value of op is known in advance by the signer, and hence, the latter can decide whether she/he wants to disclose …

Efficient Resource Allocation With Fairness Constraints In Restless Multi-Armed Bandits, Dexun Li, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Restless Multi-Armed Bandits (RMAB) is an apt model to represent decision-making problems in public health interventions (e.g., tuberculosis, maternal, and child care), anti-poaching planning, sensor monitoring, personalized recommendations and many more. Existing research in RMAB has contributed mechanisms and theoretical results to a wide variety of settings, where the focus is on maximizing expected value. In this paper, we are interested in ensuring that RMAB decision making is also fair to different arms while maximizing expected value. In the context of public health settings, this would ensure that different people and/or communities are fairly represented while making public health intervention …

Data Vu: Why Breaches Involve The Same Stories Again And Again, Woodrow Hartzog, Daniel Solove

Shorter Faculty Works

In the classic comedy Groundhog Day, protagonist Phil, played by Bill Murray, asks “What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?” In this movie, Phil is stuck reliving the same day over and over, where the events repeat in a continual loop, and nothing he does can stop them. Phil’s predicament sounds a lot like our cruel cycle with data breaches.

Every year, organizations suffer more data spills and attacks, with personal information being exposed and abused at alarming rates. While Phil …

Assessing The Practical Cybersecurity Skills Gained Through Criminal Justice Academic Programs To Benefit Security Operations Centers (Socs), Lucy Tsado, Jung Seob "Scott" Kim

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Private-sector and public-sector organizations have increasingly built specific business units for securing company assets, reputation, and lives, known as security operations centers (SOCs). Depending on the organization, these centers may also be referred to as global security operations centers, cybersecurity operations centers, fusion centers, and corporate command centers, among many other names. The concept of centralized function within an organization to improve an organization’s security posture has attracted both the government and the private sectors to either build their own SOCs or hire third-party SOC companies.

In this article, the need for a multidisciplinary approach to cybersecurity education at colleges …

Assessment Of 3d Mesh Watermarking Techniques, Neha Sharma, Jeebananda Panda

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

With the increasing usage of three-dimensional meshes in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), medical imaging, and entertainment fields like virtual reality, etc., the authentication problems and awareness of intellectual property protection have risen since the last decade. Numerous watermarking schemes have been suggested to protect ownership and prevent the threat of data piracy. This paper begins with the potential difficulties that arose when dealing with three-dimension entities in comparison to two-dimensional entities and also lists possible algorithms suggested hitherto and their comprehensive analysis. Attacks, also play a crucial role in deciding a watermarking algorithm so an attack based analysis is also presented …

To License Or Not To License Reexamined: An Updated Report On Licensing Of Digital Examiners Under State Private Investigator Statutes, Thomas Lonardo, Alan Rea, Doug White

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

In this update to the 2015 study, the authors examine US state statutes and regulations relating to licensing and enforcement of Digital Examiner functions under each state’s private investigator/detective statute. As with the prior studies, the authors find that very few state statutes explicitly distinguish between Private Investigators (PI) and Digital Examiners (DE), and when they do, they either explicitly require a license or exempt them from the licensing statute. As noted in the previous 2015 study there is a minor trend in which some states are moving to exempt DE from PI licensing requirements. We examine this trend as …

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

The Internet of Things has increased in popularity in recent years, with daily life now being surrounded by “smart devices.” This network of smart devices, such as thermostats, refrigerators, and even stationary bikes affords us convenience, but at a cost. Security measures are typically inferior on these devices; considering that they collect our data around the clock, this is a big reason for concern. Recent research shows that blockchain technology may be one way to address these security concerns. This paper discusses the Internet of Things and the current issues with how security is handled, discusses how blockchain can shore …

Fair, Equitable, And Just: A Socio-Technical Approach To Online Safety, Daricia Wilkinson Jul 2022

Fair, Equitable, And Just: A Socio-Technical Approach To Online Safety, Daricia Wilkinson

All Dissertations

Socio-technical systems have been revolutionary in reshaping how people maintain relationships, learn about new opportunities, engage in meaningful discourse, and even express grief and frustrations. At the same time, these systems have been central in the proliferation of harmful behaviors online as internet users are confronted with serious and pervasive threats at alarming rates. Although researchers and companies have attempted to develop tools to mitigate threats, the perception of dominant (often Western) frameworks as the standard for the implementation of safety mechanisms fails to account for imbalances, inequalities, and injustices in non-Western civilizations like the Caribbean. Therefore, in this dissertation …

Zero Trust Architecture: Framework And Case Study, Cody Shepherd Jul 2022

Zero Trust Architecture: Framework And Case Study, Cody Shepherd

Cyber Operations and Resilience Program Graduate Projects

The world and business are connected and a business does not exist today that does not have potentially thousands of connections to the Internet in addition to the thousands of connections to other various parts of its own infrastructure. That is the nature of the digital world we live in and there is no chance the number of those interconnections will reduce in the future. Protecting from the “outside” world with a perimeter solution might have been enough to reduce risk to an acceptable level in an organization 20 years ago, but today’s threats are sophisticated, persistent, abundant, and can …

Enhancing Security Patch Identification By Capturing Structures In Commits, Bozhi Wu, Shangqing Liu, Ruitao Feng, Xiaofei Xie, Jingkai Siow, Shang-Wei Lin Jul 2022

Enhancing Security Patch Identification By Capturing Structures In Commits, Bozhi Wu, Shangqing Liu, Ruitao Feng, Xiaofei Xie, Jingkai Siow, Shang-Wei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the rapid increasing number of open source software (OSS), the majority of the software vulnerabilities in the open source components are fixed silently, which leads to the deployed software that integrated them being unable to get a timely update. Hence, it is critical to design a security patch identification system to ensure the security of the utilized software. However, most of the existing works for security patch identification just consider the changed code and the commit message of a commit as a flat sequence of tokens with simple neural networks to learn its semantics, while the structure information is …

Asynchronous Messaging In A P2p System: Defending Against A Storage Exhaustion Attack On Kademlia Dht, Maxim Biro Jul 2022

Asynchronous Messaging In A P2p System: Defending Against A Storage Exhaustion Attack On Kademlia Dht, Maxim Biro

Theses and Dissertations

An instant messaging service designed using a peer to peer distributed network architecture has many appealing properties it gets for free: high scalability, cheap operational cost and no reliance on a third party to provide the service. However, the nature of the distributed network architecture makes implementing some of the instant messaging features rather challenging, asynchronous messaging being one of them. The asynchronous messaging requires that peers store arbitrary data on behalf of other peers for prolonged periods of time, often measured in days, which, if not kept in check, can be easily abused by malicious actors by spamming the …

Strategic Signaling For Utility Control In Audit Games, Jianan Chen, Qin Hu, Honglu Jiang Jul 2022

Strategic Signaling For Utility Control In Audit Games, Jianan Chen, Qin Hu, Honglu Jiang

Informatics and Engineering Systems Faculty Publications

As an effective method to protect the daily access to sensitive data against malicious attacks, the audit mechanism has been widely deployed in various practical fields. In order to examine security vulnerabilities and prevent the leakage of sensitive data in a timely manner, the database logging system usually employs an online signaling scheme to issue an alert when suspicious access is detected. Defenders can audit alerts to reduce potential damage. This interaction process between a defender and an attacker can be modeled as an audit game. In previous studies, it was found that sending real-time signals in the audit …

Are You Really Muted?: A Privacy Analysis Of Mute Buttons In Video Conferencing Apps, Yucheng Yang, Jack West, George K. Thiruvathukal, Neil Klingensmith, Kassem Fawaz Jul 2022

Are You Really Muted?: A Privacy Analysis Of Mute Buttons In Video Conferencing Apps, Yucheng Yang, Jack West, George K. Thiruvathukal, Neil Klingensmith, Kassem Fawaz

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In the post-pandemic era, video conferencing apps (VCAs) have converted previously private spaces — bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens — into semi-public extensions of the office. And for the most part, users have accepted these apps in their personal space, without much thought about the permission models that govern the use of their personal data during meetings. While access to a device’s video camera is carefully controlled, little has been done to ensure the same level of privacy for accessing the microphone. In this work, we ask the question: what happens to the microphone data when a user clicks the …

Public transit agencies in the United States depend on external vendors to help deliver and maintain many essential services and to provide critical technologies, from ticket purchases to scheduling to email management. While the integration of new, advanced technologies into the public transit industry brings important advancements to U.S. critical transportation infrastructure, the application of digital technologies also brings with it a new assortment of digital risks. Transit agencies of all sizes are finding themselves subject to cyber incidents—most notably ransomware attacks—like those experienced by larger, more prominent companies and critical infrastructure providers. The findings in this report focus on …

Threshold Multi-Keyword Search For Cloud-Based Group Data Sharing, Yinbin Miao, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Ximeng Liu, Hongwei Li Jul 2022

Threshold Multi-Keyword Search For Cloud-Based Group Data Sharing, Yinbin Miao, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Ximeng Liu, Hongwei Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Searchable Encryption (SE) is a popular cryptographic primitive for building ciphertexts retrieval systems with far-reaching applications. However, existing SE schemes generally do not support threshold access control (i.e., data users must collaboratively issue search and decryption operations over encrypted cloud data) in a group-oriented cloud data sharing setting, which is increasingly receiving much attention in the research community. Thus, in this article, we first propose a Threshold Multi-keyword Search (TMS) scheme for cloud-based group data sharing (referred to as basic TMS scheme) by utilizing Shamir’s secret sharing technique, to achieve threshold multi-keyword search, threshold decryption, and short record ciphertext size. …

Self-Supervised Video Representation Learning By Uncovering Spatio-Temporal Statistics, Jiangliu Wang, Jianbo Jiao, Linchao Bao, Shengfeng He, Wei Liu, Yun-Hui Liu Jul 2022

Self-Supervised Video Representation Learning By Uncovering Spatio-Temporal Statistics, Jiangliu Wang, Jianbo Jiao, Linchao Bao, Shengfeng He, Wei Liu, Yun-Hui Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes a novel pretext task to address the self-supervised video representation learning problem. Specifically, given an unlabeled video clip, we compute a series of spatio-temporal statistical summaries, such as the spatial location and dominant direction of the largest motion, the spatial location and dominant color of the largest color diversity along the temporal axis, etc. Then a neural network is built and trained to yield the statistical summaries given the video frames as inputs. In order to alleviate the learning difficulty, we employ several spatial partitioning patterns to encode rough spatial locations instead of exact spatial Cartesian coordinates. …

Xss For The Masses: Integrating Security In A Web Programming Course Using A Security Scanner, Lwin Khin Shar, Christopher M. Poskitt, Kyong Jin Shim, Li Ying Leonard Wong Jul 2022

Xss For The Masses: Integrating Security In A Web Programming Course Using A Security Scanner, Lwin Khin Shar, Christopher M. Poskitt, Kyong Jin Shim, Li Ying Leonard Wong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cybersecurity education is considered an important part of undergraduate computing curricula, but many institutions teach it only in dedicated courses or tracks. This optionality risks students graduating with limited exposure to secure coding practices that are expected in industry. An alternative approach is to integrate cybersecurity concepts across non-security courses, so as to expose students to the interplay between security and other sub-areas of computing. In this paper, we report on our experience of applying the security integration approach to an undergraduate web programming course. In particular, we added a practical introduction to secure coding, which highlighted the OWASP Top …

On Measuring Network Robustness For Weighted Networks, Jianbing Zheng, Ming Gao, Ee-Peng Lim, David Lo, Cheqing Jin, Aoying Zhou Jul 2022

On Measuring Network Robustness For Weighted Networks, Jianbing Zheng, Ming Gao, Ee-Peng Lim, David Lo, Cheqing Jin, Aoying Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Network robustness measures how well network structure is strong and healthy when it is under attack, such as vertices joining and leaving. It has been widely used in many applications, such as information diffusion, disease transmission, and network security. However, existing metrics, including node connectivity, edge connectivity, and graph expansion, can be suboptimal for measuring network robustness since they are inefficient to be computed and cannot directly apply to the weighted networks or disconnected networks. In this paper, we define the RR-energy as a new robustness measurement for weighted networks based on the method of spectral analysis. RR-energy can cope …

Test Mimicry To Assess The Exploitability Of Library Vulnerabilities, Hong Jin Kang, Truong Giang Nguyen, Bach Le, Corina S. Pasareanu, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modern software engineering projects often depend on open-source software libraries, rendering them vulnerable to potential security issues in these libraries. Developers of client projects have to stay alert of security threats in the software dependencies. While there are existing tools that allow developers to assess if a library vulnerability is reachable from a project, they face limitations. Call graphonly approaches may produce false alarms as the client project may not use the vulnerable code in a way that triggers the vulnerability, while test generation-based approaches faces difficulties in overcoming the intrinsic complexity of exploiting a vulnerability, where extensive domain knowledge …

Actuator Cyberattack Handling Using Lyapunov-Based Economic Model Predictive Control, Keshav Kasturi Rangan, Henrique Oyama, Helen Durand

Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications

Cybersecurity has gained increasing interest as a consequence of the potential impacts of cyberattacks on profits and safety. While attacks can affect various components of a plant, prior work from our group has focused on the impact of cyberattacks on control components such as process sensors and actuators and the development of detection strategies for cybersecurity derived from control theory. In this work, we provide greater focus on actuator attacks; specifically, we extend a detection and control strategy previously applied for sensor attacks and based on an optimization-based control technique called Lyapunov-based economic model predictive control (LEMPC) to detect attacks …

Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Faculty Research Publications

Typical control designs in the process systems engineering literature have assumed that the primary sensing methodologies are traditional instruments such as thermocouples. Dig- italization is changing the landscape for manufacturing, and data-based sensing modalities (e.g., image-based sensing) are becoming of greater interest for plant control. These considerations require novel test/evaluation solutions. For example, process systems engineering researchers may wish to test image-based sensors in simulation. In this work, we provide preliminary thoughts on how image-based technologies might be evaluated via simulation for process systems.
