Software Piracy Forensics: Impact And Implications Of Post‐Piracy Modifications, Vinod Bhattathiripad, S. Santhosh Baboo May 2011

Software Piracy Forensics: Impact And Implications Of Post‐Piracy Modifications, Vinod Bhattathiripad, S. Santhosh Baboo

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Piracy is potentially possible at any stage of the lifetime of the software. In a post-piracy situation, however, the growth of the respective versions of the software (both the original and pirated) is expected to be in different directions as a result of expectedly different implementation strategies. This paper shows how such post-piracy modifications are of special interest to a cyber crime expert investigating software piracy and suggests that the present software piracy forensic (or software copyright infringement investigation) approaches require amendments to take in such modifications. For this purpose, the paper also presents a format that is jargon-free, so …

Understanding Issues In Cloud Forensics: Two Hypothetical Case Studies, Josiah Dykstra, Alan T. Sherman May 2011

Understanding Issues In Cloud Forensics: Two Hypothetical Case Studies, Josiah Dykstra, Alan T. Sherman

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The inevitable vulnerabilities and criminal targeting of cloud environments demand an understanding of how digital forensic investigations of the cloud can be accomplished. We present two hypothetical case studies of cloud crimes; child pornography being hosted in the cloud, and a compromised cloudbased website. Our cases highlight shortcomings of current forensic practices and laws. We describe significant challenges with cloud forensics, including forensic acquisition, evidence preservation and chain of custody, and open problems for continued research.

A Practitioners Guide To The Forensic Investigation Of Xbox 360 Gaming Consoles, Ashley L. Podhradsky, Rob D’Ovidio, Cindy Casey

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Given the ubiquitous nature of computing, individuals now have nearly 24-7 access to the internet. People are not just going online through traditional means with a PC anymore, they are now frequently using nontraditional devices such as cell phones, smart phones, and gaming consoles. Given the increased use of gaming consoles for online access, there is also an increased use of gaming consoles to commit criminal activity. The digital forensic community has been tasked with creating new approaches for forensically analyzing gaming consoles. In this research paper the authors demonstrate different tools, both commercial and open source, available to forensically …

Sampling: Making Electronic Discovery More Cost Effective, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma May 2011

Sampling: Making Electronic Discovery More Cost Effective, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

With the huge volumes of electronic data subject to discovery in virtually every instance of litigation, time and costs of conducting discovery have become exceedingly important when litigants plan their discovery strategies. Rather than incurring the costs of having lawyers review every document produced in response to a discovery request in search of relevant evidence, a cost effective strategy for document review planning is to use statistical sampling of the database of documents to determine the likelihood of finding relevant evidence by reviewing additional documents. This paper reviews and discusses how sampling can be used to make document review more …

Digital Forensics And The Law, Karon N. Murff, Hugh E. Gardenier, Martha L. Gardenier May 2011

Digital Forensics And The Law, Karon N. Murff, Hugh E. Gardenier, Martha L. Gardenier

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

As computers and digital devices become more entrenched in our way of life, they become tools for both good and nefarious purposes. When the digital world collides with the legal world, a vast chasm is created. This paper will reflect how the legal community is failing to meet its obligation to provide adequate representation due to a lack of education about digital (computer) forensics. Whether in a civil litigation setting or a criminal setting, attorneys, prosecutors and judges have inadequate knowledge when it comes to the important questions they need to ask regarding digital evidence. Reliance on expert witnesses is …

Portable Network Analyzer, Tyler Warren May 2011

Portable Network Analyzer, Tyler Warren

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

With networks expanding into all areas of business, both network and security engineers are finding it more difficult to attend directly to issues. In many cases, a physical presence is still necessary on site to troubleshoot and identify issues, but on site, even carrying a bulky laptop is a hindrance. With today's advances in embedded systems, the answer to this problem is presented. A device running an embedded Computer on Module was built with a portable footprint, in both size and power requirements. A device of this type running an operating system like Linux is a powerful tool. In this …

Heterogeneous Signcryption With Key Privacy, Qiong Huang, Duncan S. Wong, Guomin Yang Apr 2011

Heterogeneous Signcryption With Key Privacy, Qiong Huang, Duncan S. Wong, Guomin Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A signcryption scheme allows a sender to produce a ciphertext for a receiver so that both confidentiality and non-repudiation can be ensured. It is built to be more efficient and secure, for example, supporting insider security, when compared with the conventional sign-then-encrypt approach. In this paper, we propose a new notion called heterogeneous signcryption in which the sender has an identity-based secret key while the receiver is holding a certificate-based public key pair. Heterogeneous signcryption is suitable for practical scenarios where an identity-based user, who does not have a personal certificate or a public key, wants to communicate securely with …

A Multi Agent System For Flow-Based Intrusion Detection Using Reputation And Evolutionary Computation, David Hancock Mar 2011

A Multi Agent System For Flow-Based Intrusion Detection Using Reputation And Evolutionary Computation, David Hancock

Theses and Dissertations

The rising sophistication of cyber threats as well as the improvement of physical computer network properties present increasing challenges to contemporary Intrusion Detection (ID) techniques. To respond to these challenges, a multi agent system (MAS) coupled with flow-based ID techniques may effectively complement traditional ID systems. This paper develops: 1) a scalable software architecture for a new, self-organized, multi agent, flow-based ID system; and 2) a network simulation environment suitable for evaluating implementations of this MAS architecture and for other research purposes. Self-organization is achieved via 1) a reputation system that influences agent mobility in the search for effective vantage …

Malicious And Malfunctioning Node Detection Via Observed Physical Layer Data, Tyler J. Hardy Mar 2011

Malicious And Malfunctioning Node Detection Via Observed Physical Layer Data, Tyler J. Hardy

Theses and Dissertations

There are many mechanisms that can cause inadequate or unreliable information in sensor networks. A user of the network might be interested in detecting and classifying specific sensors nodes causing these problems. Several network layer based trust methods have been developed in previous research to assess these issues; in contrast this work develops a trust protocol based on observations of physical layer data collected by the sensors. Observations of physical layer data are used for decisions and calculations, and are based on just the measurements collected by the sensors. Although this information is packaged and distributed on the network layer, …

Holistic Network Defense: Fusing Host And Network Features For Attack Classification, Jenny W. Ji Mar 2011

Holistic Network Defense: Fusing Host And Network Features For Attack Classification, Jenny W. Ji

Theses and Dissertations

This work presents a hybrid network-host monitoring strategy, which fuses data from both the network and the host to recognize malware infections. This work focuses on three categories: Normal, Scanning, and Infected. The network-host sensor fusion is accomplished by extracting 248 features from network traffic using the Fullstats Network Feature generator and from the host using text mining, looking at the frequency of the 500 most common strings and analyzing them as word vectors. Improvements to detection performance are made by synergistically fusing network features obtained from IP packet flows and host features, obtained from text mining port, processor, logon …

An Architecture For Improving Timeliness And Relevance Of Cyber Incident Notifications, James L. Miller Mar 2011

An Architecture For Improving Timeliness And Relevance Of Cyber Incident Notifications, James L. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This research proposes a communications architecture to deliver timely and relevant cyber incident notifications to dependent mission stakeholders. This architecture, modeled in Unified Modeling Language (UML), eschews the traditional method of pushing notifications via message as dictated in Air Force Instruction 33-138. It instead shifts to a pull or publish and subscribe method of making notifications. Shifting this paradigm improves the notification process by empowering mission owners to identify those resources on which they depend for mission accomplishment, provides a direct conduit between providing and dependent mission owners for notifications when an incident occurs, and provides a shared representation for …

Evaluating Information Assurance Control Effectiveness On An Air Force Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (Scada) System, Jason R. Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are increasingly being connected to corporate networks which has dramatically expanded their attack surface to remote cyber attack. Adversaries are targeting these systems with increasing frequency and sophistication. This thesis seeks to answer the research question addressing which Information Assurance (IA) controls are most significant for network defenders and SCADA system managers/operators to focus on in order to increase the security of critical infrastructure systems against a Stuxnet-like cyber attack. This research applies the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) IA controls to an attack tree modeled on a remote Stuxnet-like cyber …

Defensive Cyber Battle Damage Assessment Through Attack Methodology Modeling, Ryan T. Ostler Mar 2011

Defensive Cyber Battle Damage Assessment Through Attack Methodology Modeling, Ryan T. Ostler

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the growing sophisticated capabilities of advanced persistent cyber threats, it is necessary to understand and accurately assess cyber attack damage to digital assets. This thesis proposes a Defensive Cyber Battle Damage Assessment (DCBDA) process which utilizes the comprehensive understanding of all possible cyber attack methodologies captured in a Cyber Attack Methodology Exhaustive List (CAMEL). This research proposes CAMEL to provide detailed knowledge of cyber attack actions, methods, capabilities, forensic evidence and evidence collection methods. This product is modeled as an attack tree called the Cyber Attack Methodology Attack Tree (CAMAT). The proposed DCBDA process uses CAMAT to analyze …

Software And Critical Technology Protection Against Side Channel Analysis Through Dynamic Hardware Obfuscation, John R. Bochert Mar 2011

Software And Critical Technology Protection Against Side Channel Analysis Through Dynamic Hardware Obfuscation, John R. Bochert

Theses and Dissertations

Side Channel Analysis (SCA) is a method by which an adversary can gather information about a processor by examining the activity being done on a microchip though the environment surrounding the chip. Side Channel Analysis attacks use SCA to attack a microcontroller when it is processing cryptographic code, and can allow an attacker to gain secret information, like a crypto-algorithm's key. The purpose of this thesis is to test proposed dynamic hardware methods to increase the hardware security of a microprocessor such that the software code being run on the microprocessor can be made more secure without having to change …

Measuring The Utility Of A Cyber Incident Mission Impact Assessment (Cimia) Process For Mission Assurance, Christy L. Peterson Mar 2011

Measuring The Utility Of A Cyber Incident Mission Impact Assessment (Cimia) Process For Mission Assurance, Christy L. Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Information is a critical asset on which virtually all modern organizations depend upon to meet their operational mission objectives. Military organizations, in particular, have embedded Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) into their core mission processes as a means to increase their operational efficiency, exploit automation, improve decision quality, and shorten the kill chain. However, the extreme dependence upon ICT results in an environment where a cyber incident can result in severe mission degradation, or possibly failure, with catastrophic consequences to life, limb, and property. These consequences can be minimized by maintaining real-time situational awareness of mission critical resources so appropriate …

Certificateless Public Key Encryption: A New Generic Construction And Two Pairing-Free Schemes, Guomin Yang, Chik How Tan Mar 2011

Certificateless Public Key Encryption: A New Generic Construction And Two Pairing-Free Schemes, Guomin Yang, Chik How Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The certificateless encryption (CLE) scheme proposed by Baek, Safavi-Naini and Susilo is computation-friendly since it does not require any pairing operation. Unfortunately, an error was later discovered in their security proof and so far the provable security of the scheme remains unknown. Recently, Fiore, Gennaro and Smart showed a generic way (referred to as the FGS transformation) to transform identity-based key agreement protocols to certificateless key encapsulation mechanisms (CL-KEMs). As a typical example, they showed that the pairing-free CL-KEM underlying Baek et al.’s CLE can be “generated” by applying their transformation to the Fiore–Gennaro (FG) identity-based key agreement (IB-KA) protocol. In …

Strongly Secure Certificateless Key Exchange Without Pairing, Guomin Yang, Chik How Tan Mar 2011

Strongly Secure Certificateless Key Exchange Without Pairing, Guomin Yang, Chik How Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In certificateless cryptography, a user secret key is derived from two partial secrets: one is the identity-based secret key (corresponding to the user identity) generated by a Key Generation Center (KGC), and the other is the user selfgenerated secret key (corresponding to a user self-generated and uncertified public key). Two types of adversaries are considered for certificateless cryptography: a Type-I adversary who can replace the user self-generated public key (in transmission or in a public directory), and a Type-II adversary who is an honest-but-curious KGC. In this paper, we present a formal study on certificateless key exchange (CLKE). We show …

Authenticated Key Exchange Under Bad Randomness, Guomin Yang, Shanshan Duan, Duncan S. Wong, Chik How Tan, Huaxiong Wang Mar 2011

Authenticated Key Exchange Under Bad Randomness, Guomin Yang, Shanshan Duan, Duncan S. Wong, Chik How Tan, Huaxiong Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We initiate the formal study on authenticated key exchange (AKE) under bad randomness. This could happen when (1) an adversary compromises the randomness source and hence directly controls the randomness of each AKE session; and (2) the randomness repeats in different AKE sessions due to reset attacks. We construct two formal security models, Reset-1 and Reset-2, to capture these two bad randomness situations respectively, and investigate the security of some widely used AKE protocols in these models by showing that they become insecure when the adversary is able to manipulate the randomness. On the positive side, we propose simple but …

Chameleon All-But-One Tdfs And Their Application To Chosen-Ciphertext Security, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Shengli Liu Mar 2011

Chameleon All-But-One Tdfs And Their Application To Chosen-Ciphertext Security, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng, Shengli Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In STOC’08, Peikert and Waters introduced a new powerful primitive called lossy trapdoor functions (LTDFs) and a richer abstraction called all-but-one trapdoor functions (ABO-TDFs). They also presented a black-box construction of CCA-secure PKE from an LTDF and an ABO-TDF. An important component of their construction is the use of a strongly unforgeable one-time signature scheme for CCA-security.In this paper, we introduce the notion of chameleon ABO-TDFs, which is a special kind of ABO-TDFs. We give a generic as well as a concrete construction of chameleon ABO-TDFs. Based on an LTDF and a chameleon ABO-TDF, we presented a black-box construction, free …

Secure Mobile Subscription Of Sensor-Encrypted Data, Cheng-Kang Chu, Wen-Tao Zhu, Sherman S. M. Chow, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng Mar 2011

Secure Mobile Subscription Of Sensor-Encrypted Data, Cheng-Kang Chu, Wen-Tao Zhu, Sherman S. M. Chow, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In an end-to-end encryption model for a wireless sensor network (WSN), the network control center preloads encryption and decryption keys to the sensor nodes and the subscribers respectively, such that a subscriber can use a mobile device in the deployment field to decrypt the sensed data encrypted by the more resource-constrained sensor nodes. This paper proposes SMS-SED, a provably secure yet practically efficient key assignment system featuring a discrete time-based access control, to better support a business model where the sensors deployer rents the WSN to customers who desires a higher flexibility beyond subscribing to strictly consecutive periods. In SMS-SED, …

Cryptanalysis Of A Certificateless Signcryption Scheme In The Standard Model, Jian Weng, Guoxiang Yao, Robert H. Deng, Min-Rong Chen, Xianxue Li Feb 2011

Cryptanalysis Of A Certificateless Signcryption Scheme In The Standard Model, Jian Weng, Guoxiang Yao, Robert H. Deng, Min-Rong Chen, Xianxue Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Certificateless signcryption is a useful primitive which simultaneously provides the functionalities of certificateless encryption and certificateless signature. Recently, Liu et al. [15] proposed a new certificateless signcryption scheme, and claimed that their scheme is provably secure without random oracles in a strengthened security model, where the malicious-but-passive KGC attack is considered. Unfortunately, by giving concrete attacks, we indicate that Liu et al. certificateless signcryption scheme is not secure in this strengthened security model.

Fraud Detection In Online Consumer Reviews, Nan Hu, Ling Liu, Vallabh Sambamurthy Feb 2011

Fraud Detection In Online Consumer Reviews, Nan Hu, Ling Liu, Vallabh Sambamurthy

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Increasingly, consumers depend on social information channels, such as user-posted online reviews, to make purchase decisions. These reviews are assumed to be unbiased reflections of other consumers' experiences with the products or services. While extensively assumed, the literature has not tested the existence or non-existence of review manipulation. By using data from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, our study investigates if vendors, publishers, and writers consistently manipulate online consumer reviews. We document the existence of online review manipulation and show that the manipulation strategy of firms seems to be a monotonically decreasing function of the product's true quality or the …

Database Access Pattern Protection Without Full-Shuffles, Xuhua Ding, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng Feb 2011

Database Access Pattern Protection Without Full-Shuffles, Xuhua Ding, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Privacy protection is one of the fundamental security requirements for database outsourcing. A major threat is information leakage from database access patterns generated by query executions. The standard private information retrieval (PIR) schemes, which are widely regarded as theoretical solutions, entail O(n) computational overhead per query for a database with items. Recent works propose to protect access patterns by introducing a trusted component with constant storage size. The resulting privacy assurance is as strong as PIR, though with O(1) online computation cost, they still have O(n) amortized cost per query due to periodically full database shuffles. In this paper, we …

An Agile It Security Model For Project Risk Assessment, Damien Hutchinson, Heath Maddern, Jason Wells Jan 2011

An Agile It Security Model For Project Risk Assessment, Damien Hutchinson, Heath Maddern, Jason Wells

Australian Information Security Management Conference

There are two fundamental challenges in effectively performing security risk assessment in today's IT projects. The first is the project manager's need to know what IT security risks face the project before the project begins. At this stage IT security staff are unable to answer this question without first knowing the system requirements for the project which are yet to be defined. Second organisations that deal with a large project throughput each year find the current IT security risk assessment process to be tedious and expensive, especially when the same process has to be repeated for each individual project. This …
