Privacy Enhanced Superdistribution Of Layered Content With Trusted Access Control, Daniel J. T. Chong, Robert H. Deng
Privacy Enhanced Superdistribution Of Layered Content With Trusted Access Control, Daniel J. T. Chong, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Traditional superdistribution approaches do not address consumer privacy issues and also do not reliably prevent the malicious consumer from indiscriminately copying and redistributing the decryption keys or the decrypted content. The layered nature of common digital content can also be exploited to efficiently provide the consumer with choices over the quality of the content, allowing him/her to pay less for lower quality consumption and vice versa. This paper presents a system that superdistributes encrypted layered content and (1) allows the consumer to select a quality level at which to decrypt and consume the content; (2) prevents the merchant from knowing …
Three Architectures For Trusted Data Dissemination In Edge Computing, Shen-Tat Goh, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao
Three Architectures For Trusted Data Dissemination In Edge Computing, Shen-Tat Goh, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Edge computing pushes application logic and the underlying data to the edge of the network, with the aim of improving availability and scalability. As the edge servers are not necessarily secure, there must be provisions for users to validate the results—that values in the result tuples are not tampered with, that no qualifying data are left out, that no spurious tuples are introduced, and that a query result is not actually the output from a different query. This paper aims to address the challenges of ensuring data integrity in edge computing. We study three schemes that enable users to check …
Rights Protection For Data Cubes, Jie Guo, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Kefei Chen
Rights Protection For Data Cubes, Jie Guo, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Kefei Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose a rights protection scheme for data cubes. The scheme embeds ownership information by modifying a set of selected cell values. The embedded message will not affect the usefulness of data cubes in the sense that the sum queries at any aggregation level are not affected. At the same time, the errors introduced to individual cell values are under control. The embedded message can be detected with a high probability even in the presence of typical data cube attacks. The proposed scheme can thus be used for protecting data cubes from piracy in an open, distributed environment.
Practical Private Data Matching Deterrent To Spoofing Attacks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao
Practical Private Data Matching Deterrent To Spoofing Attacks, Yanjiang Yang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Private data matching between the data sets of two potentially distrusted parties has a wide range of applications. However, existing solutions have substantial weaknesses and do not meet the needs of many practical application scenarios. In particular, practical private data matching applications often require discouraging the matching parties from spoofing their private inputs. In this paper, we address this challenge by forcing the matching parties to "escrow" the data they use for matching to an auditorial agent, and in the "after-the-fact" period, they undertake the liability to attest the genuineness of the escrowed data.
Disclosure Analysis For Two-Way Contingency Tables, Haibing Lu, Yingjiu Li, Xintao Wu
Disclosure Analysis For Two-Way Contingency Tables, Haibing Lu, Yingjiu Li, Xintao Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Disclosure analysis in two-way contingency tables is important in categorical data analysis. The disclosure analysis concerns whether a data snooper can infer any protected cell values, which contain privacy sensitive information, from available marginal totals (i.e., row sums and column sums) in a two-way contingency table. Previous research has been targeted on this problem from various perspectives. However, there is a lack of systematic definitions on the disclosure of cell values. Also, no previous study has been focused on the distribution of the cells that are subject to various types of disclosure. In this paper, we define four types of …
A Novel Privacy Preserving Authentication And Access Control Scheme For Pervasive Computing Environments, K. Ren, Wenjing Lou, K. Kim, Robert H. Deng
A Novel Privacy Preserving Authentication And Access Control Scheme For Pervasive Computing Environments, K. Ren, Wenjing Lou, K. Kim, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Privacy and security are two important but seemingly contradictory objectives in a pervasive computing environment (PCE). On one hand, service providers want to authenticate legitimate users and make sure they are accessing their authorized services in a legal way. On the other hand, users want to maintain the necessary privacy without being tracked down for wherever they are and whatever they are doing. In this paper, a novel privacy preserving authentication and access control scheme to secure the interactions between mobile users and services in PCEs is proposed. The proposed scheme seamlessly integrates two underlying cryptographic primitives, namely blind signature …
Private Information Retrieval Using Trusted Hardware, Shuhong Wang, Xuhua Ding, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao
Private Information Retrieval Using Trusted Hardware, Shuhong Wang, Xuhua Ding, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many theoretical PIR (Private Information Retrieval) constructions have been proposed in the past years. Though information theoretically secure, most of them are impractical to deploy due to the prohibitively high communication and computation complexity. The recent trend in outsourcing databases fuels the research on practical PIR schemes. In this paper, we propose a new PIR system by making use of trusted hardware. Our system is proven to be information theoretically secure. Furthermore, we derive the computation complexity lower bound for hardware-based PIR schemes and show that our construction meets the lower bounds for both the communication and computation costs, respectively.
Authenticating Multi-Dimensional Query Results In Data Publishing, Weiwei Cheng, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan
Authenticating Multi-Dimensional Query Results In Data Publishing, Weiwei Cheng, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In data publishing, the owner delegates the role of satisfying user queries to a third-party publisher. As the publisher may be untrusted or susceptible to attacks, it could produce incorrect query results. This paper introduces a mechanism for users to verify that their query answers on a multi-dimensional dataset are correct, in the sense of being complete (i.e., no qualifying data points are omitted) and authentic (i.e., all the result values originated from the owner). Our approach is to add authentication information into a spatial data structure, by constructing certified chains on the points within each partition, as well as …
Mitigating Tcp Degradation Over Intermittent Link Failures Using Intermediate Buffers, M. Brent Reynolds
Mitigating Tcp Degradation Over Intermittent Link Failures Using Intermediate Buffers, M. Brent Reynolds
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses the improvement of data transmission performance in a challenged network. It is well known that the popular Transmission Control Protocol degrades in environments where one or more of the links along the route is intermittently available. To avoid this degradation, this thesis proposes placing at least one node along the path of transmission to buffer and retransmit as needed to overcome the intermittent link. In the four-node, three-link testbed under particular conditions, file transmission time was reduced 20 fold in the case of an intermittent second link when the second node strategically buffers for retransmission opportunity.
Online Survey System: A Web-Based Tool For Creating And Administering Student Evaluations Online, Fatima Marie Idowu
Online Survey System: A Web-Based Tool For Creating And Administering Student Evaluations Online, Fatima Marie Idowu
Theses and Dissertations
With the advancement in technology over the years, the administering of online surveys has expanded. In particular, universities are using the online medium to administer surveys to students, in order to evaluate faculty performances. The move of surveys to the online realm has meant a reduction in cost, time and efforts, of survey administrators, and the increase in use of technology within universities. With the use of online surveys the challenges of confidentiality, anonymity and response rates are as prominent as they are with paper-based surveys.
This study researched the use of online surveys in education; detailing systems currently used …
Mitigating Insider Threat Using Human Behavior Influence Models, Anthony J. Puleo
Mitigating Insider Threat Using Human Behavior Influence Models, Anthony J. Puleo
Theses and Dissertations
Insider threat is rapidly becoming the largest information security problem that organizations face. With large numbers of personnel having access to internal systems, it is becoming increasingly difficult to protect organizations from malicious insiders. The typical methods of mitigating insider threat are simply not working, primarily because this threat is a people problem, and most mitigation strategies are geared towards profiling and anomaly detection, which are problematic at best. As a result, a new type of model is proposed in this thesis, one that incorporates risk management with human behavioral science. The new risk-based model focuses on observable influences that …
Development Of A Methodology For Customizing Insider Threat Auditing On A Microsoft Windows Xp® Operating System, Terry E. Levoy
Development Of A Methodology For Customizing Insider Threat Auditing On A Microsoft Windows Xp® Operating System, Terry E. Levoy
Theses and Dissertations
Most organizations are aware that threats from trusted insiders pose a great risk to their organization and are very difficult to protect against. Auditing is recognized as an effective technique to detect malicious insider activities. However, current auditing methods are typically applied with a one-size-fits-all approach and may not be an appropriate mitigation strategy, especially towards insider threats. This research develops a 4-step methodology for designing a customized auditing template for a Microsoft Windows XP operating system. Two tailoring methods are presented which evaluate both by category and by configuration. Also developed are various metrics and weighting factors as a …
Development Of A Malicious Insider Composite Vulnerability Assessment Methodology, William H. King
Development Of A Malicious Insider Composite Vulnerability Assessment Methodology, William H. King
Theses and Dissertations
Trusted employees pose a major threat to information systems. Despite advances in prevention, detection, and response techniques, the number of malicious insider incidents and their associated costs have yet to decline. There are very few vulnerability and impact models capable of providing information owners with the ability to comprehensively assess the effectiveness an organization's malicious insider mitigation strategies. This research uses a multi-dimensional approach: content analysis, attack tree framework, and an intent driven taxonomy model are used to develop a malicious insider Decision Support System (DSS) tool. The DSS tool's utility and applicability is demonstrated using a notional example. This …
A Multidiscipline Approach To Mitigating The Insider Threat, Jonathan W. Butts, Robert F. Mills, Gilbert L. Peterson
A Multidiscipline Approach To Mitigating The Insider Threat, Jonathan W. Butts, Robert F. Mills, Gilbert L. Peterson
Faculty Publications
Preventing and detecting the malicious insider is an inherently difficult problem that expands across many areas of expertise such as social, behavioral and technical disciplines. Unfortunately, current methodologies to combat the insider threat have had limited success primarily because techniques have focused on these areas in isolation. The technology community is searching for technical solutions such as anomaly detection systems, data mining and honeypots. The law enforcement and counterintelligence communities, however, have tended to focus on human behavioral characteristics to identify suspicious activities. These independent methods have limited effectiveness because of the unique dynamics associated with the insider threat. The …
Security Analysis On A Conference Scheme For Mobile Communications, Zhiguo Wan, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, A. L. Ananda
Security Analysis On A Conference Scheme For Mobile Communications, Zhiguo Wan, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng, A. L. Ananda
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The conference key distribution scheme (CKDS) enables three or more parties to derive a common conference key to protect the conversation content in their conference. Designing a conference key distribution scheme for mobile communications is a difficult task because wireless networks are more susceptible to attacks and mobile devices usually obtain low power and limited computing capability. In this paper we study a conference scheme for mobile communications and find that the scheme is insecure against the replay attack. With our replay attack, an attacker with a compromised conference key can cause the conferees to reuse the compromised conference key, …

Paper Session V: Steganography And Terrorist Communications - Current Information And Trends - Tools, Analysis And Future Directions In Steganalysis In Context With Terrorists And Other Criminals, William Eyre, Marcus Rogers
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In ancient times, users communicated using steganography, “…derived from the Greek words steganos, meaning ‘covered’, and graphein, meaning ‘to write.’” (Singh, 1999, p.5) Steganography facilitates secret, undetected communication. In modern times, in the context of the Global War on Terror, national intelligence and law enforcement agencies need tools to detect hidden information (steganography) in various types of media, most specifically to uncover the placement of hidden information in images. This paper will look at steganography in general terms, presenting the theory of some common steganographic techniques and touching on some theoretical work in steganography. Then a discussion of how to …

Paper Session V: Forensic Software Tools For Cell Phone Subscriber Identity Modules, Wayne Jansen, Rick Ayers
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Cell phones and other handheld devices incorporating cell phone capabilities (e.g., smart phones) are ubiquitous. Besides placing calls, cell phones allow users to perform other tasks such as text messaging and phonebook entry management. When cell phones and cellular devices are involved in a crime or other incident, forensic specialists require tools that allow the proper retrieval and speedy examination of data present on the device. For devices conforming to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standards, certain data such as dialed numbers, text messages, and phonebook entries are maintained on a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM). This paper gives …

Paper Session Iv: Development And Delivery Of Coursework - The Legal/Regulatory/Policy Environment Of Cyberforensics, John W. Bagby, John C. Ruhnka
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
This paper describes a cyber-forensics course that integrates important public policy and legal issues as well as relevant forensic techniques. Cyber-forensics refers to the amalgam of multi-disciplinary activities involved in the identification, gathering, handling, custody, use and security of electronic files and records, involving expertise from the forensic domain, and which produces evidence useful in the proof of facts for both commercial and legal activities. The legal and regulatory environment in which electronic discovery takes place is of critical importance to cyber-forensics experts because the legal process imposes both constraints and opportunities for the effective use of evidence gathered through …

Paper Session Iv: Toward Understanding Digital Forensics As A Profession: Defining Curricular Needs (***Research In Process ***), Michelle Wolf, Alan Shafer, Michael Gendron
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
This research paper presents research in process which attempts to define the common body of knowledge (CBK) of digital forensics. Digital forensics is not well defined not does it have a generally accepted CBK. The first three phases of completed research, in a four-phase research process are discussed. The early results have created a preliminary CBK, and final validation is underway.

Paper Session Iii: Research Brief: A Curriculum For Teaching Information Technology Investigative Techniques For Auditors, Grover S. Kearns, Elizabeth V. Mulig
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Recent prosecutions of highly publicized white-collar crimes combined with public outrage have resulted in heightened regulation and greater emphasis on systems of internal control. Because both white-collar and cybercrimes are usually perpetrated through computers, auditors’ knowledge of information technology (IT) is now more vital than ever. However, preserving digital evidence and investigative techniques, which can be essential to fraud examinations, are not skills frequently taught in accounting programs. Furthermore, many students are not instructed in the use of computer assisted auditing tools and techniques – applications that might uncover fraudulent activity. Only a limited number of university-level accounting classes provide …
Paper Session Ii: Forensic Scene Documentation Using Mobile Technology, Ibrahim Baggili
Paper Session Ii: Forensic Scene Documentation Using Mobile Technology, Ibrahim Baggili
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
This paper outlines a framework for integrating forensic scene documentation with mobile technology. Currently there are no set standards for documenting a forensic scene. Nonetheless, there is a conceptual framework that forensic scientists and engineers use that includes note taking, scene sketches, photographs, video, and voice interview recordings. This conceptual framework will be the basis that a mobile forensic scene documentation software system is built on. A mobile software system for documenting a forensic scene may help in standardizing forensic scene documentation by regulating the data collection and documentation processes for various forensic disciplines.
Considerations On Deception Techniques Used In Political And Product Marketing, Carlo Kopp
Considerations On Deception Techniques Used In Political And Product Marketing, Carlo Kopp
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
This paper explores three deception techniques which are widely used in political and product marketing. These techniques are ‘deception by omission’, ‘deception by saturation’ and the use of ‘deception by spin’. These techniques are newly analysed in the framework of the four canonical strategies of Information Warfare and Shannon’s capacity and entropy theorems, and their respective strengths and weaknesses established. Specific strategies for the defeat of these deception techniques are discussed.
Information Terrorism In The New Security Environment, Ken Webb
Information Terrorism In The New Security Environment, Ken Webb
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
Over the years there have been many interpretations of what constitutes Information Terrorism. This paper examines the correlation/relationship between Information Warfare and Terrorism, and describes what is considered to be Information Terrorism now. It achieves this by outlining the threat’s impact, advantage and capability. It then examines the positives that can be derived from such and, based on the literature available on the subject, provides a deduced interpretation of what Information Terrorism is. The paper concludes with remarks supporting the assertion that Information Terrorism is a major dynamic and asymmetric threat contributing to a new national security environment.

Freeware Live Forensics Tools Evaluation And Operation Tips, Ricci Ieong
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
Highlighted by a digital forensics investigation specialists from FBI in DFRWS 2006, live forensics investigations already become one of the most important procedures in digital forensics investigations. Many digital forensics investigation product companies have already joint the battlefield in developing their only live forensics tools. However, similar to the development trend in traditional digital forensics, evaluation criteria for Live Digital Forensics could only be standardized after operating procedures being standardized. One way to standardize the Live Digital Forensics Investigation procedure is to define the investigation objectives around the core digital forensics principles. Through the use of FORZA framework, a more …
