On Measuring Network Robustness For Weighted Networks, Jianbing Zheng, Ming Gao, Ee-Peng Lim, David Lo, Cheqing Jin, Aoying Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Network robustness measures how well network structure is strong and healthy when it is under attack, such as vertices joining and leaving. It has been widely used in many applications, such as information diffusion, disease transmission, and network security. However, existing metrics, including node connectivity, edge connectivity, and graph expansion, can be suboptimal for measuring network robustness since they are inefficient to be computed and cannot directly apply to the weighted networks or disconnected networks. In this paper, we define the RR-energy as a new robustness measurement for weighted networks based on the method of spectral analysis. RR-energy can cope …

Modern software engineering projects often depend on open-source software libraries, rendering them vulnerable to potential security issues in these libraries. Developers of client projects have to stay alert of security threats in the software dependencies. While there are existing tools that allow developers to assess if a library vulnerability is reachable from a project, they face limitations. Call graphonly approaches may produce false alarms as the client project may not use the vulnerable code in a way that triggers the vulnerability, while test generation-based approaches faces difficulties in overcoming the intrinsic complexity of exploiting a vulnerability, where extensive domain knowledge …
Gauging The Acceptance Of Contact Tracing Technology: An Empirical Study Of Singapore Residents’ Concerns With Sharing Their Information And Willingness To Trust, Ee-Ing Ong, Wee Ling Loo
Gauging The Acceptance Of Contact Tracing Technology: An Empirical Study Of Singapore Residents’ Concerns With Sharing Their Information And Willingness To Trust, Ee-Ing Ong, Wee Ling Loo
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, governments began implementing various forms of contact tracing technology. Singapore’s implementation of its contact tracing technology, TraceTogether, however, was met with significant concern by its population, with regard to privacy and data security. This concern did not fit with the general perception that Singaporeans have a high level of trust in its government. We explore this disconnect, using responses to our survey (conducted pre-COVID-19) in which we asked participants about their level of concern with the government and business collecting certain categories of personal data. The results show that respondents had less concern with …

Regulating Personal Data Usage In Covid-19 Control Conditions, Mark Findlay, Nydia Remolina
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Concern has been widely expressed about the potential for COVID-19 control technologies and resultant data sharing negatively impacting on civil rights, invading personal privacy, undermining citizen dignity through expansive data matching and ultimately providing opportunities for data use well beyond the brief of virus mitigation. This chapter offers suggestions regarding effective and inclusive regulatory responses when faced with extended surveillance, tracking/tracing, public/private provider data sharing and any breakdown in personal data firewalls, or otherwise conventional aggregated data deviations and distortion. In doing so, the chapter explores personal data usage in the context of COVID-19 as a regulatory enterprise. It addresses …

Shunted Self-Attention Via Multi-Scale Token Aggregation, Sucheng Ren, Daquan Zhou, Shengfeng He, Jiashi Feng, Xinchao Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent Vision Transformer (ViT) models have demonstrated encouraging results across various computer vision tasks, thanks to its competence in modeling long-range dependencies of image patches or tokens via self-attention. These models, however, usually designate the similar receptive fields of each token feature within each layer. Such a constraint inevitably limits the ability of each self-attention layer in capturing multi-scale features, thereby leading to performance degradation in handling images with multiple objects of different scales. To address this issue, we propose a novel and generic strategy, termed shunted selfattention (SSA), that allows ViTs to model the attentions at hybrid scales per …

Joint Pricing And Matching For City-Scale Ride Pooling, Sanket Shah, Meghna Lowalekar, Pradeep Varakantham
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Central to efficient ride-pooling are two challenges: (1) how to `price' customers' requests for rides, and (2) if the customer agrees to that price, how to best `match' these requests to drivers. While both of them are interdependent, each challenge's individual complexity has meant that, historically, they have been decoupled and studied individually. This paper creates a framework for batched pricing and matching in which pricing is seen as a meta-level optimisation over different possible matching decisions. Our key contributions are in developing a variant of the revenue-maximizing auction corresponding to the meta-level optimization problem, and then providing a scalable …

Benchmarking Library Recognition In Tweets, Ting Zhang, Divya Prabha Chandrasekaran, Ferdian Thung, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Software developers often use social media (such as Twitter) to shareprogramming knowledge such as new tools, sample code snippets, and tips on programming. One of the topics they talk about is thesoftware library. The tweets may contain useful information abouta library. A good understanding of this information, e.g., on thedeveloper’s views regarding a library can be beneficial to weigh thepros and cons of using the library as well as the general sentimentstowards the library. However, it is not trivial to recognize whethera word actually refers to a library or other meanings. For example,a tweet mentioning the word “pandas" may refer to …

Outsourcing encrypted data to cloud servers that has become a prevalent trend among Internet users to date. There is a long list of advantages on data outsourcing, such as the reduction cost of local data management. How to securely operate encrypted data (remotely), however, is the top-rank concern over data owner. Liang et al. proposed a novel encrypted cloud-based data share and search system without loss of privacy. The system allows users to flexibly search and share encrypted data as well as updating keyword field. However, the search complexity of the system is of extreme inefficiency, O(nd), where d is …
Natural Attack For Pre-Trained Models Of Code, Zhou Yang, Jieke Shi, Junda He, David Lo
Natural Attack For Pre-Trained Models Of Code, Zhou Yang, Jieke Shi, Junda He, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Pre-trained models of code have achieved success in many important software engineering tasks. However, these powerful models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks that slightly perturb model inputs to make a victim model produce wrong outputs. Current works mainly attack models of code with examples that preserve operational program semantics but ignore a fundamental requirement for adversarial example generation: perturbations should be natural to human judges, which we refer to as naturalness requirement. In this paper, we propose ALERT (Naturalness Aware Attack), a black-box attack that adversarially transforms inputs to make victim models produce wrong outputs. Different from prior works, this …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cloud computing is considered as one of the most prominent paradigms in the information technology industry, since it can significantly reduce the costs of hardware and software resources in computing infrastructure. This convenience has enabled corporations to efficiently use the cloud storage as a mechanism to share data among their employees. At the first sight, by merely storing the shared data as plaintext in the cloud storage and protect them using an appropriate access control would be a nice solution. This is assuming that the cloud is fully trusted for not leaking any information, which is impractical as the cloud …
Probabilistic Path Prioritization For Hybrid Fuzzing, Lei Zhao, Pengcheng Cao, Yue Duan, Heng Yin, Jifeng Xuan
Probabilistic Path Prioritization For Hybrid Fuzzing, Lei Zhao, Pengcheng Cao, Yue Duan, Heng Yin, Jifeng Xuan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Hybrid fuzzing that combines fuzzing and concolic execution has become an advanced technique for software vulnerability detection. Based on the observation that fuzzing and concolic execution are complementary in nature, state-of-the-art hybrid fuzzing systems deploy “optimal concolic testing” and “demand launch” strategies. Although these ideas sound intriguing, we point out several fundamental limitations in them, due to unrealistic or oversimplified assumptions. Further, we propose a novel “discriminative dispatch” strategy and design a probabilistic hybrid fuzzing system to better utilize the capability of concolic execution. Specifically, we design a Monte Carlo-based probabilistic path prioritization model to quantify each path’s difficulty, and …

Smile: Secure Memory Introspection For Live Enclave, Lei Zhou, Xuhua Ding, Zhang Fengwei
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
SGX enclaves prevent external software from accessing their memory. This feature conflicts with legitimate needs for enclave memory introspection, e.g., runtime stack collection on an enclave under a return-oriented-programming attack. We propose SMILE for enclave owners to acquire live enclave contents with the assistance of a semi-trusted agent installed by the host platform’s vendor as a plug-in of the System Management Interrupt handler. SMILE authenticates the enclave under introspection without trusting the kernel nor depending on the SGX attestation facility. SMILE is enclave security preserving as breaking of SMILE does not undermine enclave security. It allows a cloud server to …

Linkbreaker: Breaking The Backdoor-Trigger Link In Dnns Via Neurons Consistency Check, Zhenzhu Chen, Shang Wang, Anmin Fu, Yansong Gao, Shui Yu, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Backdoor attacks cause model misbehaving by first implanting backdoors in deep neural networks (DNNs) during training and then activating the backdoor via samples with triggers during inference. The compromised models could pose serious security risks to artificial intelligence systems, such as misidentifying 'stop' traffic sign into '80km/h'. In this paper, we investigate the connection characteristic between the backdoor and the trigger in DNNs and observe the fact that the backdoor is implanted via establishing a link between a cluster of neurons, representing the backdoor, and the triggers. Based on this observation, we design LinkBreaker, a new generic scheme for defending …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learnability is a core aspect of software usability. Video games are not an exception, as game designers need to teach players how to play their creations. We analyzed 40 contemporary video games to identify how video games approach learning experiences. We found that games have advanced far beyond using simple tutorials or demonstration screens and adopt a range of repeatable and reusable design strategies using visual cues to facilitate learning. We provide a detailed descriptive framework of these design strategies, elucidating how and when they can be used, and describing how the visual cues are used to build them. Our …

Message-Locked Searchable Encryption: A New Versatile Tool For Secure Cloud Storage, Xueqiao Liu, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo, Joseph Tonien, Rongmao Chen, Xixiang Lv
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Message-Locked Encryption (MLE) is a useful tool to enable deduplication over encrypted data in cloud storage. It can significantly improve the cloud service quality by eliminating redundancy to save storage resources, and hence user cost, and also providing defense against different types of attacks, such as duplicate faking attack and brute-force attack. A typical MLE scheme only focuses on deduplication. On the other hand, supporting search operations on stored content is another essential requirement for cloud storage. In this article, we present a message-locked searchable encryption (MLSE) scheme in a dual-server setting, which achieves simultaneously the desirable features of supporting …

With the wide usage of data visualizations, a huge number of Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG)-based visualizations have been created and shared online. Accordingly, there has been an increasing interest in exploring how to retrieve perceptually similar visualizations from a large corpus, since it can benefit various downstream applications such as visualization recommendation. Existing methods mainly focus on the visual appearance of visualizations by regarding them as bitmap images. However, the structural information intrinsically existing in SVG-based visualizations is ignored. Such structural information can delineate the spatial and hierarchical relationship among visual elements, and characterize visualizations thoroughly from a new perspective. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
App repackaging has raised serious concerns to the Android ecosystem with the repackage-proofing technology attracting attention in the Android research community. In this paper, we first show that existing repackage-proofing schemes rely on a flawed security assumption, and then propose a new class of active warden attack that intercepts and falsifies the metrics used by repackage-proofing for detecting the integrity violations during repackaging. We develop a proof-of-concept toolkit to demonstrate that all the existing repackage-proofing schemes can be bypassed by our attack toolkit. On the positive side, our analysis further identifies a new integrity metric in the Android ART runtime …

Shieldfl: Mitigating Model Poisoning Attacks In Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning, Zhuoran Ma, Jianfeng Ma, Yinbin Miao, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning (PPFL) is an emerging secure distributed learning paradigm that aggregates user-trained local gradients into a federated model through a cryptographic protocol. Unfortunately, PPFL is vulnerable to model poisoning attacks launched by a Byzantine adversary, who crafts malicious local gradients to harm the accuracy of the federated model. To resist model poisoning attacks, existing defense strategies focus on identifying suspicious local gradients over plaintexts. However, the Byzantine adversary submits encrypted poisonous gradients to circumvent existing defense strategies in PPFL, resulting in encrypted model poisoning. To address the issue, in this paper we design a privacy-preserving defense strategy using …

Resil: Revivifying Function Signature Inference Using Deep Learning With Domain-Specific Knowledge, Yan Lin, Debin Gao, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Function signature recovery is important for binary analysis and security enhancement, such as bug finding and control-flow integrity enforcement. However, binary executables typically have crucial information vital for function signature recovery stripped off during compilation. To make things worse, recent studies show that many compiler optimization strategies further complicate the recovery of function signatures with intended violations to function calling conventions. In this paper, we first perform a systematic study to quantify the extent to which compiler optimizations (negatively) impact the accuracy of existing deep learning techniques for function signature recovery. Our experiments show that a state-of-the-art deep learning technique has …

Internet Privacy Concerns Revisited: Oversight From Surveillance And Right To Be Forgotten As New Dimensions, Gaurav Bansal, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the post-Snowden revelation era, concerns related to government surveillance and oversight have come to the forefront. The ability of the Internet to remember “everything” (or forget anything) also raises a privacy concern associated with the right to be forgotten (RTBF). In this paper, we examine the conceptualization of Internet privacy concerns (IPC) by extending Hong and Thong's (2013) model with the addition of two dimensions: oversight (i.e., due to surveillance) and the RTBF. We provide theoretical and empirical evidence for our proposed integrated conceptualization. Data were collected from Amazon's Mechanical Turk and analyzed with structural equation modeling using a …

Securead: A Secure Video Anomaly Detection Framework On Convolutional Neural Network In Edge Computing Environment, Hang Cheng, Ximeng Liu, Huaxiong Wang, Yan Fang, Meiqing Wang, Xiaopeng Zhao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Anomaly detection offers a powerful approach to identifying unusual activities and uncommon behaviors in real-world video scenes. At present, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been widely used to tackle anomalous events detection, which mainly rely on its stronger ability of feature representation than traditional hand-crafted features. However, massive video data and high cost of CNN model training are a challenge to achieve satisfactory detection results for resource-limited users. In this paper, we propose a secure video anomaly detection framework (SecureAD) based on CNN. Specifically, we introduce additive secret sharing to design several calculation protocols for achieving safe CNN training and …

Verifiable Searchable Encryption Framework Against Insider Keyword-Guessing Attack In Cloud Storage, Yinbin Miao, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Ximeng Liu, Hongwei Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Searchable encryption (SE) allows cloud tenants to retrieve encrypted data while preserving data confidentiality securely. Many SE solutions have been designed to improve efficiency and security, but most of them are still susceptible to insider Keyword-Guessing Attacks (KGA), which implies that the internal attackers can guess the candidate keywords successfully in an off-line manner. Also in existing SE solutions, a semi-honest-but-curious cloud server may deliver incorrect search results by performing only a fraction of retrieval operations honestly (e.g., to save storage space). To address these two challenging issues, we first construct the basic Verifiable SE Framework (VSEF), which can withstand …

Chosen-Instruction Attack Against Commercial Code Virtualization Obfuscators, Shijia Li, Chunfu Jia, Pengda Qiu, Qiyuan Chen, Jiang Ming, Debin Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
—Code virtualization is a well-known sophisticated obfuscation technique that uses custom virtual machines (VM) to emulate the semantics of original native instructions. Commercial VM-based obfuscators (e.g., Themida and VMProtect) are often abused by malware developers to conceal malicious behaviors. Since the internal mechanism of commercial obfuscators is a black box, it is a daunting challenge for the analyst to understand the behavior of virtualized programs. To figure out the code virtualization mechanism and design deobfuscation techniques, the analyst has to perform reverse-engineering on large-scale highly obfuscated programs. This knowledge learning process suffers from painful cost and imprecision. In this project, …

Match In My Way: Fine-Grained Bilateral Access Control For Secure Cloud-Fog Computing, Shengmin Xu, Jianting Ning, Yingjiu Li, Yinghui Zhang, Guowen Xu, Xinyi Huang, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cloud-fog computing is a novel paradigm to extend the functionality of cloud computing to provide a variety of on demand data services via the edge network. Many cryptographic tools have been introduced to preserve data confidentiality against the untrustworthy network and cloud servers. However, how to efficiently identify and retrieve useful data from a large number of ciphertexts without a costly decryption mechanism remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we introduce a cloud fog-device data sharing system (CFDS) with data confidentiality and data source identification simultaneously based on a new cryptographic primitive named matchmaking attribute-based encryption (MABE) by extending …

Efficient Certificateless Multi-Copy Integrity Auditing Scheme Supporting Data Dynamics, Lei Zhou, Anmin Fu, Guomin Yang, Huaqun Wang, Yuqing Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To improve data availability and durability, cloud users would like to store multiple copies of their original files at servers. The multi-copy auditing technique is proposed to provide users with the assurance that multiple copies are actually stored in the cloud. However, most multi-replica solutions rely on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), which entails massive overhead of certificate computation and management. In this article, we propose an efficient multi-copy dynamic integrity auditing scheme by employing certificateless signatures (named MDSS), which gets rid of expensive certificate management overhead and avoids the key escrow problem in identity-based signatures. Specifically, we improve the classic …

Sdac: A Slow-Aging Solution For Android Malware Detection Using Semantic Distance Based Api Clustering, Jiayun Xu, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Xu Ke
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A novel slow-aging solution named SDAC is proposed to address the model aging problem in Android malware detection, which is due to the lack of adapting to the changes in Android specifications during malware detection. Different from periodic retraining of detection models in existing solutions, SDAC evolves effectively by evaluating new APIs' contributions to malware detection according to existing API's contributions. In SDAC, the contributions of APIs are evaluated by their contexts in the API call sequences extracted from Android apps. A neural network is applied on the sequences to assign APIs to vectors, among which the differences of API …

Update Recovery Attacks On Encrypted Database Within Two Updates Using Range Queries Leakage, Jianting Ning, Geong Sen Poh, Xinyi Huang, Robert H. Deng, Shuwei Cao, Ee-Chien Chang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recently, reconstruction attacks on static encrypted database supporting range queries have been proposed. However, attacks on encrypted database within two updates in the similar setting have not been studied extensively. As far as we know, the only work is the update recovery attack presented by Grubbs et al. (CCS 2018). Following their seminal work, we present new update recovery attacks for dense dataset (i.e. at least one record corresponding to each value in the range), which enable a deeper understanding of the impact caused by leakages due to updates on dynamic encrypted database. Our first attack aims at recovering the …

Bug localization is the task of identifying parts of thesource code that needs to be changed to resolve a bug report. As this task is difficult, automatic bug localization tools havebeen proposed. The development and evaluation of these toolsrely on the availability of high-quality bug report datasets. In2014, Kochhar et al. identified three biases in datasets used toevaluate bug localization techniques: (1) misclassified bug report,(2) already localized bug report, and (3) incorrect ground truthfile in a bug report. They reported that already localized bugreports statistically significantly and substantially impact buglocalization results, and thus should be removed. However, theirevaluation is still limited, …

Reliable nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) segmentation plays an important role in radiotherapy planning. However, recent deep learning methods fail to achieve satisfactory NPC segmentation in magnetic resonance (MR) images, since NPC is infiltrative and typically has a small or even tiny volume with indistinguishable border, making it indiscernible from tightly connected surrounding tissues from immense and complex backgrounds. To address such background dominance problems, this paper proposes a sequential method (SeqSeg) to achieve accurate NPC segmentation. Specifically, the proposed SeqSeg is devoted to solving the problem at two scales: the instance level and feature level. At the instance level, SeqSeg is …
