Spartanscript: New Language Design For Smart Contracts, Ajinkya Lakade
Master's Projects
Smart contracts have become a crucial element for developing decentralized applications on blockchain, resulting in numerous innovative projects on blockchain networks. Ethereum has played a significant role in this space by providing a high-performance Ethereum virtual machine, enabling the creation of several high- level programming languages that can run on the Ethereum blockchain. Despite its usefulness, the Ethereum Virtual Machine has been prone to security vulnerabilities that can result in developers succumbing to common pitfalls which are otherwise safeguarded by modern virtual machines used in programming languages. The project aims to introduce a new interpreted scripting programming language that closely …
The History Of The Enigma Machine, Jenna Siobhan Parkinson
The History Of The Enigma Machine, Jenna Siobhan Parkinson
History Publications
The history of the Enigma machine begins with the invention of the rotor-based cipher machine in 1915. Various models for rotor-based cipher machines were developed somewhat simultaneously in different parts of the world. However, the first documented rotor machine was developed by Dutch naval officers in 1915. Nonetheless, the Enigma machine was officially invented following the end of World War I by Arthur Scherbius in 1918 (Faint, 2016).

In this paper, I conduct experiments in a virtual environment to discover whether attacks originated from Metasploit Framework are marked with …
Detecting Selfish Mining Attacks Against A Blockchain Using Machine Learing, Matthew A. Peterson
Detecting Selfish Mining Attacks Against A Blockchain Using Machine Learing, Matthew A. Peterson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
Selfish mining is an attack against a blockchain where miners hide newly discovered blocks instead of publishing them to the rest of the network. Selfish mining has been a potential issue for blockchains since it was first discovered by Eyal and Sirer. It can be used by malicious miners to earn a disproportionate share of the mining rewards or in conjunction with other attacks to steal money from network users. Several of these attacks were launched in 2018, 2019, and 2020 with the attackers stealing as much as $18 Million. Developers made several different attempts to fix this issue, but …

Within the scope of a Wide Area Network (WAN), a large geographical communication network in which a collection of networking devices communicate data to each other, an example being the spanning communication network, known as the Internet, around continents. Within WANs exists a collection of Routers that transfer network packets to other devices. An issue pertinent to WANs is their immeasurable size and density, as we are not sure of the amount, or the scope, of all the devices that exists within the network. By tracing the routes and transits of data that traverses within the WAN, we can identify …
Ransomware And Malware Sandboxing, Byron Denham
Ransomware And Malware Sandboxing, Byron Denham
Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The threat of ransomware that encrypts data on a device and asks for payment to decrypt the data affects individual users, businesses, and vital systems including healthcare. This threat has become increasingly more prevalent in the past few years. To understand ransomware through malware analysis, care must be taken to sandbox the ransomware in an environment that allows for a detailed and comprehensive analysis while also preventing it from being able to further spread. Modern malware often takes measures to detect whether it has been placed into an analysis environment to prevent examination. In this work, several notable pieces of …
Detecting The Intensity Of Denial-Of-Service Cyber Attacks Using Supervised Machine Learning, Abigail Hubbard
Detecting The Intensity Of Denial-Of-Service Cyber Attacks Using Supervised Machine Learning, Abigail Hubbard
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks are aimed at shutting a machine or network down to block users from accessing it. These attacks can be difficult to detect and can cost millions in damages or lost earnings. Since the first DoS attack occurred in 1999, the way DoS attacks have been launched has become more complicated, making them more elusive and harder to detect. The first step to detect and mitigate a DoS attack is for a system to identify the malicious traffic.
In this experiment, we aim to identify the malicious traffic within ten seconds. To do this the project was divided …

An Application Of Machine Learning To Analysis Of Packed Mac Malware, Kimo Bumanglag
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
The macOS operating system is increasingly targeted by malware. Software written for macOS, both benign and malicious, is in the Mach-O executable format. Malware authors may frustrate analysts through obfuscation methods such as packing. The field of malware research on Windows is well-established but is less so on the macOS platform. Thus far, no research has been identified that studies how machine learning can be used to detected packed Mach-O malware. This research applies supervised machine learning techniques to the classification of packed Mach-O malware. This research will answer three research questions. First, whether machine learning can classify packed Mach-O …
Malware And Memory Forensics On M1 Macs, Charles E. Glass
Malware And Memory Forensics On M1 Macs, Charles E. Glass
LSU Master's Theses
As malware continues to evolve, infection mechanisms that can only be seen in memory are increasingly commonplace. These techniques evade traditional forensic analysis, requiring the use of memory forensics. Memory forensics allows for the recovery of historical data created by running malware, including information that it tries to hide. Memory analysis capabilities have lagged behind on Apple's new M1 architecture while the number of malicious programs only grows. To make matters worse, Apple has developed Rosetta 2, the translation layer for running x86_64 binaries on an M1 Mac. As a result, all malware compiled for Intel Macs is theoretically functional …
Improving Memory Forensics Capabilities On Apple M1 Computers, Raphaela Santos Mettig Rocha
Improving Memory Forensics Capabilities On Apple M1 Computers, Raphaela Santos Mettig Rocha
LSU Master's Theses
Malware threats are rapidly evolving to use more sophisticated attacks. By abusing rich application APIs such as Objective-C’s, they are able to gather information about user activity, launch background processes without the user’s knowledge as well as perform other malicious activities. In some cases, memory forensics is the only way to recover artifacts related to this malicious activity, as is the case with memory-only execution. The introduction of the Rosetta 2 on the Apple M1 introduces a completely new attack surface by allowing binaries of both Intel x86 64 and ARM64 architecture to run in userland. For this reason it …

The Global Rise Of Online Devices, Cyber Crime And Cyber Defense: Enhancing Ethical Actions, Counter Measures, Cyber Strategy, And Approaches, Naresh Kshetri
Dissertations
The rise of online devices, online users, online shopping, online gaming, and online teaching has ultimately given rise to online attacks and online crimes. As cases of COVID-19 seem to increase day by day, so do online crimes and attacks (as many sectors and organizations went 100% online). Technological advancements and cyber warfare already generated many ethical issues, as internet users increasingly need ethical cyber defense strategies.
Individual internet users have challenges on their end; and on the other end, nation states (some secretly, some openly), are investing in robot weapons and autonomous weapons systems (AWS). New technologies have combined …
Improving Adversarial Attacks Against Malconv, Justin Burr
Improving Adversarial Attacks Against Malconv, Justin Burr
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation proposes several improvements to existing adversarial attacks against MalConv, a raw-byte malware classifier for Windows PE files. The included contributions greatly improve the success rates and performance of gradient-based file overlay attacks. All improvements are included in a new open-source attack utility called BitCamo.
Several new payload initialization strategies for use with gradient-based attacks are proposed and evaluated as potential replacements for the randomized initialization method used by current attacks. An algorithm for determining the optimal payload size is also proposed. The resulting improvements achieve a 100% evasion rate against eligible target executables using an average payload size …

Multi-Dimensional Security Integrity Analysis Of Broad Market Internet-Connected Cameras, Mark A. Stanislav
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
This study used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional, descriptive analysis survey design to examine the adherence of 40 internet-connected cameras against three IoT security frameworks to determine their overall security posture. Relevant literature was reviewed showing that prior studies in a similar regard had limitations, such as a small sample population, singular market segment focus, and/or a lack of validation against formalized frameworks. This study resulted in a uniform and multi-dimensional set of findings with supporting evidence, leading to a mapping against selected IoT security frameworks that was then quantitatively analyzed for their relative adherence as individual cameras, across …
Timestamp Estimation From Outdoor Scenes, Tawfiq Salem, Jisoo Hwang, Rafael Padilha
Timestamp Estimation From Outdoor Scenes, Tawfiq Salem, Jisoo Hwang, Rafael Padilha
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The increasing availability of smartphones allowed people to easily capture and share images on the internet. These images are often associated with metadata, including the image capture time (timestamp) and the location where the image was captured (geolocation). The metadata associated with images provides valuable information to better understand scenes and events presented in these images. The timestamp can be manipulated intentionally to provide false information to convey a twisted version of reality. Images with manipulated timestamps are often used as a cover-up for wrongdoing or broadcasting false claims and competing views on the internet. Estimating the time of capture …

A Lightweight Reliably Quantified Deepfake Detection Approach, Tianyi Wang, Kam Pui Chow
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Deepfake has brought huge threats to society such that everyone can become a potential victim. Current Deepfake detection approaches have unsatisfactory performance in either accuracy or efficiency. Meanwhile, most models are only evaluated on different benchmark test datasets with different accuracies, which could not imitate the real-life Deepfake unknown population. As Deepfake cases have already been raised and brought challenges at the court, it is disappointed that no existing work has studied the model reliability and attempted to make the detection model act as the evidence at the court. We propose a lightweight Deepfake detection deep learning approach using the …

Proxy Re-Encryption In Blockchain-Based Application, Wangcheng Yuan
Proxy Re-Encryption In Blockchain-Based Application, Wangcheng Yuan
Master's Projects
Nowadays, blockchain-based technology has risen to a new dimension. With the advantage of the decentralized identity, data are transferred through decentralized and public ledgers. Those new contracts provide great visibility. However, there is still a need to keep some data private in many cases. Those private data should be encrypted while still benefiting from the decentralized on-chain protocol. Securing those private data in such a decentralized blockchain-based system is thus a critical problem. Our solution provides a decentralized protocol that lets users grant access to their private data with proxy re-encryption in SpartanGold (a blockchain-based cryptocurrency). We implement a third-party …

A Low-Cost Machine Learning Based Network Intrusion Detection System With Data Privacy Preservation, Jyoti Fakirah, Lauhim Mahfuz Zishan, Roshni Mooruth, Michael L. Johnstone, Wencheng Yang
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Network intrusion is a well-studied area of cyber security. Current machine learning-based network intrusion detection systems (NIDSs) monitor network data and the patterns within those data but at the cost of presenting significant issues in terms of privacy violations which may threaten end-user privacy. Therefore, to mitigate risk and preserve a balance between security and privacy, it is imperative to protect user privacy with respect to intrusion data. Moreover, cost is a driver of a machine learning-based NIDS because such systems are increasingly being deployed on resource-limited edge devices. To solve these issues, in this paper we propose a NIDS …

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In this work, we aim to better understand outsider perspectives of the hacker community through a series of situation based survey questions. By doing this, we hope to gain insight into the overall reputation of hackers from participants in a wide range of technical and non-technical backgrounds. This is important to digital forensics since convicted hackers will be tried by people, each with their own perception of who hackers are. Do cyber crimes and national security issues negatively affect people’s perceptions of hackers? Does hacktivism and information warfare positively affect people’s perception of hackers? Do individual personality factors affect one’s …

The never-before-seen proliferation of interconnected low-power computing devices, patently dubbed the Internet of Things (IoT), is revolutionizing how people, organizations, and malicious actors interact with one another and the Internet. Many of these devices collect data in different forms, be it audio, location data, or user commands. In civil or criminal nature investigations, the data collected can act as evidence for the prosecution or the defense. This data can also be used as a component of cybersecurity efforts. When data is extracted from these devices, investigators are expected to do so using proven methods. Still, unfortunately, given the heterogeneity in …
An Empirical Study Of Thermal Attacks On Edge Platforms, Tyler Holmes
An Empirical Study Of Thermal Attacks On Edge Platforms, Tyler Holmes
Symposium of Student Scholars
Cloud-edge systems are vulnerable to thermal attacks as the increased energy consumption may remain undetected, while occurring alongside normal, CPU-intensive applications. The purpose of our research is to study thermal effects on modern edge systems. We also analyze how performance is affected from the increased heat and identify preventative measures. We speculate that due to the technology being a recent innovation, research on cloud-edge devices and thermal attacks is scarce. Other research focuses on server systems rather than edge platforms. In our paper, we use a Raspberry Pi 4 and a CPU-intensive application to represent thermal attacks on cloud-edge systems. …

Convolutional Neural Networks For Deflate Data Encoding Classification Of High Entropy File Fragments, Nehal Ameen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Data reconstruction is significantly improved in terms of speed and accuracy by reliable data encoding fragment classification. To date, work on this problem has been successful with file structures of low entropy that contain sparse data, such as large tables or logs. Classifying compressed, encrypted, and random data that exhibit high entropy is an inherently difficult problem that requires more advanced classification approaches. We explore the ability of convolutional neural networks and word embeddings to classify deflate data encoding of high entropy file fragments after establishing ground truth using controlled datasets. Our model is designed to either successfully classify file …
