A Partition Based Feature Selection Approach For Mixed Data Clustering, Ashish Dutt

Student Works (2020-2029)

Presently, educational institutions compile and store huge volumes of data, such as student enrolment and attendance records, as well as their examination results. Mining such data yields stimulating information that serves its handlers well. Rapid growth in educational data points to the fact that distilling massive amounts of data requires a more sophisticated set of algorithms. This issue led to the emergence of the field of Educational Data Mining (EDM). Traditional data mining algorithms cannot be directly applied to educational problems, as they may have a specific objective and function. This implies that a pre-processing algorithm has to be enforced …

Presentation Of Computer Security Risk Information: Impact Of Framing And Base Size, Xinhui Zhan, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau, Richard Hall, Maggie Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research explores how the presentation of computer security risks impacts users’ risk perceptions and behavior. It draws on Prospect Theory to generate hypotheses related to users’ decision-making in the computer security context. A 2 × 3 mixed factorial experimental design (N = 178) was carried out and the results show that framing and base size of information on computer security risks influence users’ perceived risk and risk-taking behavior. More specifically, negative framing and large base size increase users’ perceived risk and reduce users’ risk-taking behavior. The findings from this research suggest that using negative framing and large base size …

Measuring Privacy Concerns With Government Surveillance And Right-To-Be-Forgotten In Nomological Net Of Trust And Willingness-To-Share, Gaurav Bansal, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In the post Snowden revelations era, concerns related to government surveillance and oversight have come to the forefront. The ability of the Internet to remember “everything” (or forget anything) also raises a privacy concern associated with the “right to be forgotten”. Hence, in this paper, we propose and examine privacy concerns by extending the Hong and Thong’s (2013) model with the addition of two dimensions: right to be forgotten as well as government surveillance and oversight. We tested two different measurement models using privacy concerns as a second-order and a third-order construct within a nomological net that includes trusting beliefs …

Bridging Hierarchical And Sequential Context Modeling For Question-Driven Extractive Answer Summarization, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Yaliang Li, Min Yang, Wai Lam, Ying Shen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Non-factoid question answering (QA) is one of the most extensive yet challenging application and research areas of retrieval-based question answering. In particular, answers to non-factoid questions can often be too lengthy and redundant to comprehend, which leads to the great demand on answer sumamrization in non-factoid QA. However, the multi-level interactions between QA pairs and the interrelation among different answer sentences are usually modeled separately on current answer summarization studies. In this paper, we propose a unified model to bridge hierarchical and sequential context modeling for question-driven extractive answer summarization. Specifically, we design a hierarchical compare-aggregate method to integrate the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we consider the security issues in data sharing cliques via remote server. We present a public key re-encryption scheme with delegated equality test on ciphertexts (PRE-DET). The scheme allows users to share outsourced data on the server without performing decryption-then-encryption procedures, allows new users to dynamically join the clique, allows clique users to attest the message underlying a ciphertext, and enables the server to partition outsourced user data without any further help of users after being delegated. We introduce the PRE-DET framework, propose a concrete construction and formally prove its security against five types of adversaries regarding …

The Use Of Digital Millenium Copyright Act To Stifle Speech Through Non-Copyright Related Takedowns, Miller Freeman May 2020

The Use Of Digital Millenium Copyright Act To Stifle Speech Through Non-Copyright Related Takedowns, Miller Freeman

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law

In 1998, Congress passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. This law provided new methods of protecting copyright in online media. These protections shift the normal judicial process that would stop the publication of infringing materials to private actors: the online platforms. As a result, online platforms receive notices of infringement and issue takedowns of allegedly copyrighted works without the judicial process which normally considers the purpose of the original notice of infringement. In at least one case, discussed in detail below, this has resulted in a notice and takedown against an individual for reasons not related to the purpose of …

Privacy-Preserving Data Processing With Flexible Access Control, Wenxiu Ding, Zheng Yan, Robert H. Deng Mar 2020

Privacy-Preserving Data Processing With Flexible Access Control, Wenxiu Ding, Zheng Yan, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cloud computing provides an efficient and convenient platform for cloud users to store, process and control their data. Cloud overcomes the bottlenecks of resource-constrained user devices and greatly releases their storage and computing burdens. However, due to the lack of full trust in cloud service providers, the cloud users generally prefer to outsource their sensitive data in an encrypted form, which, however, seriously complicates data processing, analysis, as well as access control. Homomorphic encryption (HE) as a single key system cannot flexibly control data sharing and access after encrypted data processing. How to realize various computations over encrypted data in …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Community question answering (CQA) gains increasing popularity in both academy and industry recently. However, the redundancy and lengthiness issues of crowdsourced answers limit the performance of answer selection and lead to reading difficulties and misunderstandings for community users. To solve these problems, we tackle the tasks of answer selection and answer summary generation in CQA with a novel joint learning model. Specifically, we design a question-driven pointer-generator network, which exploits the correlation information between question-Answer pairs to aid in attending the essential information when generating answer summaries. Meanwhile, we leverage the answer summaries to alleviate noise in original lengthy answers …

Mind The Gap: Understanding Stakeholder Reactions To Different Types Of Data Security, Audra Diers-Lawson, Amelia Symons Jan 2020

Mind The Gap: Understanding Stakeholder Reactions To Different Types Of Data Security, Audra Diers-Lawson, Amelia Symons

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

Data security breaches are an increasingly common problem for organizations, yet there are critical gaps in our understanding of how different stakeholders understand and evaluate organizations that have experienced these kinds of security breaches. While organizations have developed relatively standard approaches to responding to security breaches that: (1) acknowledge the situation; (2) highlight how much they value their stakeholders’ privacy and private information; and (3) focus on correcting and preventing the problem in the future, the effectiveness of this response strategy and factors influencing it have not been adequately explored. This experiment focuses on a 2 (type of organization) x …

Strongly Leakage Resilient Authenticated Key Exchange, Revisited, Guomin Yang, Rongmao Chen, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo, Guo Fuchun, Jie Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Authenticated Key Exchange (AKE) protocols allow two (or multiple) parties to authenticate each other and agree on a common secret key, which is essential for establishing a secure communication channel over a public network. AKE protocols form a central component in many network security standards such as IPSec, TLS/SSL, and SSH. However, it has been demonstrated that many standardized AKE protocols are vulnerable to side-channel and key leakage attacks. In order to defend against such attacks, leakage resilient (LR-) AKE protocols have been proposed in the literature. Nevertheless, most of the existing LR-AKE protocols only focused on the resistance to …

Lightweight Fine-Grained Search Over Encrypted Data In Fog Computing, Yinbin Miao, Jianfeng Ma, Ximeng Liu, Jian Weng, Hongwei Li, Hui Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Fog computing, as an extension of cloud computing, outsources the encrypted sensitive data to multiple fog nodes on the edge of Internet of Things (IoT) to decrease latency and network congestion. However, the existing ciphertext retrieval schemes rarely focus on the fog computing environment and most of them still impose high computational and storage overhead on resource-limited end users. In this paper, we first present a Lightweight Fine-Grained ciphertexts Search (LFGS) system in fog computing by extending Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE) and Searchable Encryption (SE) technologies, which can achieve fine-grained access control and keyword search simultaneously. The LFGS can shift …

Despite the promising benefits such as expanded signature databases and alert data from multiple sites, trust management and consensus building remain as challenges for a CIDS to work effectively. The blockchain technology with built-in immutability and consensus building capability provides a viable solution to the issues of CIDS. In this paper, we introduce an architecture for a blockchain-enabled signature-based collaborative IDS, discuss the implementation strategy of the proposed architecture and developed a prototype using Hyperledger …

Securing Messaging Services Through Efficient Signcryption With Designated Equality Test, Yujue Wang, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng, Yong Ding, Qianhong Wu, Bo Qin Jul 2019

Securing Messaging Services Through Efficient Signcryption With Designated Equality Test, Yujue Wang, Hwee Hwa Pang, Robert H. Deng, Yong Ding, Qianhong Wu, Bo Qin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To address security and privacy issues in messaging services, we present a public key signcryption scheme with designated equality test on ciphertexts (PKS-DET) in this paper. The scheme enables a sender to simultaneously encrypt and sign (signcrypt) messages, and to designate a tester to perform equality test on ciphertexts, i.e., to determine whether two ciphertexts signcrypt the same underlying plaintext message. We introduce the PKS-DET framework, present a concrete construction and formally prove its security against three types of adversaries, representing two security requirements on message confidentiality against outsiders and the designated tester, respectively, and a requirement on message unforgeability …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As computing services are increasingly cloud-based, corporations are investing in cloud-based security measures. The Security-as-a-Service (SECaaS) paradigm allows customers to outsource security to the cloud, through the payment of a subscription fee. However, no security system is bulletproof, and even one successful attack can result in the loss of data and revenue worth millions of dollars. To guard against this eventuality, customers may also purchase cyber insurance to receive recompense in the case of loss. To achieve cost effectiveness, it is necessary to balance provisioning of security and insurance, even when future costs and risks are uncertain. To this end, …

Intrusion-Tolerant Order-Preserving Encryption, John Huson May 2019

Intrusion-Tolerant Order-Preserving Encryption, John Huson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Traditional encryption schemes such as AES and RSA aim to achieve the highest level of security, often indistinguishable security under the adaptive chosen-ciphertext attack. Ciphertexts generated by such encryption schemes do not leak useful information. As a result, such ciphertexts do not support efficient searchability nor range queries.

Order-preserving encryption is a relatively new encryption paradigm that allows for efficient queries on ciphertexts. In order-preserving encryption, the data-encrypting key is a long-term symmetric key that needs to stay online for insertion, query and deletion operations, making it an attractive target for attacks.

In this thesis, an intrusion-tolerant order-preserving encryption system …
