In this paper we introduce a scalable, privacy-preserving, federated learning framework, coined FLoBC, based on the concept of distributed ledgers underlying blockchains. This is motivated by the rapid growth of data worldwide, especially decentralized data which calls for scalable, decenteralized machine learning models which is capable of preserving the privacy of the data of the participating users. Towards this objective, we first motivate and define the problem scope. We then introduce the proposed FLoBC system architecture hinging on a number of key pillars, namely parallelism, decentralization and node update synchronization. In particular, we examine a number of known node update …

A Prototype Application For The Measurement Of Data Breach Event Intensity, James Palazzolo
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The data breach phenomenon is not new. People have valued information, its protection, and its security for centuries. A data breach is the loss of control over one’s information. In contemporary society (circa 2024), a data breach can occur in several ways: through accidental disclosure, negligence, or malicious action. Likewise, the study of the data breach phenomenon is not new. As with other studies, this research effort seeks to expand the current body of knowledge concerning data breaches. However, unlike previous research, we adopt a novel approach to further our understanding of the phenomenon. By employing topological and phenomenological thinking, …

Life has become more comfortable in the era of advanced technology in this cutthroat competitive world. However, there are also emerging harmful technologies that pose a threat. Without a doubt, phishing is one of the rising concerns that leads to stealing vital information such as passwords, security codes, and personal data from any target node through communication hijacking techniques. In addition, phishing attacks include delivering false messages that originate from a trusted source. Moreover, a phishing attack aims to get the victim to run malicious programs and reveal confidential data, such as bank credentials, one-time passwords, and user login credentials. …

Due to the popularity of Android mobile devices over the past ten years, malicious Android applications have significantly increased. Systems utilizing machine learning techniques have been successfully applied for Android malware detection to counter the constantly changing Android malware threats. However, attackers have developed new strategies to circumvent these systems by using adversarial attacks. An attacker can carefully craft a malicious sample to deceive a classifier. Among the evasion attacks, there is the more potent one, which is based on solid optimization constraints: the Carlini-Wagner attack. Carlini-Wagner is an attack that uses margin loss, which is more efficient than cross-entropy …

Passperfect: A Secure One Time Password Authentication System, Charlene H. Crawshaw
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Most organizations have established strong password policies and standards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of their data, applications, and critical systems. Even with rigorous implementations and layered approaches such as utilizing multifactor authentications, there are still flaws and vulnerabilities as they have a high dependency on the user adhering to them. In conjunction with these policies, a strong security awareness program should be implemented to educate the end user about strong password hygiene. In this work, we design and implement a secure one-time password (OTP) system, “PassPerfect”, to provide a method of enforcing a strong set of password …

Secure Unlinkability Schemes For Privacy Preserving Data Publishing In Weighted Social Networks, Chong Kah Meng
Student Works (2020-2029)
Preserving privacy of users has been one of the important research issues in social networks. Social networks contain sensitive personal information that are often released for business and research purposes. The privacy of a user can be breached if the data are not released in an anonymized form. In this thesis, we address edge weight disclosure, link disclosure and identity disclosure problems in publishing weighted network data. To counter these privacy risks while preserving high utility of the published data, we define two key privacy properties, namely edge weight unlinkability and node unlinkability. We design two novel anonymization schemes namely …

Adversarial Attack On Neural Machine Translation System, Abijith K. P.
Adversarial Attack On Neural Machine Translation System, Abijith K. P.
Master’s Dissertations
Nowadays Deep Neural Network based solutions are deployed to solve numerous tasks. Thus, it has become absolutely important to study the robustness of these systems. Machine Translation is one of the popular applications of Deep Neural Networks. This thesis studies the robustness of Neural Machine Translation systems by generating adversarial examples with the objective to fool the model. Whenever there is a change in the source, i.e. when a word in the input sentence is replaced by an unrelated word, the translation system is supposed to reflect the changes while doing translation. These unwanted invariance learned by the model is …

Virtual Hearings And Blockchain Technology Solutions In Criminal Law, Chantell Bergquist
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Technology has evolved and raided our personal and professional lives. Although the courts are not immune to the advancement and integration of technology, the courts are not keeping up with relevant technological advancements. Historically, courts have been hesitant to embrace new technologies despite the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct. Rule 1 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure creates the right to a “just, speedy, and inexpensive determination of every action and proceeding.” Likewise, the American Bar Association Model Rules of Professional Conduct have determined attorneys must “keep abreast of …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cloud-based mobile crowd-sourcing has been an attractive solution to provide data storage and share services for resource-limited mobile devices in a privacy-preserving manner, but how to enable mobile users to issue search queries and achieve fine-grained access control over ciphertexts simultaneously is still a big challenge for various circumstances. Although the ciphertext-policy attribute-based keyword search technology combining attribute-based encryption with searchable encryption has become a hot research topic, it just deals with equivalent attributes rather than more practical attribute comparisons, like “greater than” or “less than.” In this paper, we devise a practical cryptographic primitive called attribute-based multi-keyword search scheme …

We present a framework for privacy preservation in an information cloud of IoT devices. We contend that privacy provisioning should be located in the user device and must protect the user, the information, and the device from breaches in privacy. We elaborate on how the layered privacy model can ensure such privacy provisioning, and justify the device being the provisioning point instead of the cloud alone. We present the point of view that, due to resource limitations of the IoT devices in general, the privacy preserving measures need to be hard-coded in the device technology. We fall short of suggesting …

Technology is forever changing in our world today. The way in which we receive information must match the convenience of our current technology. As of now most information that is stored is often restricted to the site of the server when one wants to access it. Cloud storage can change this process by allowing users anywhere to access the information they need. This technology is a solution to our storage problems as it is convenient for any user to obtain information. Unfortunately this technology has various large problems, like security, but hopefully in the future these can be solved. Overall, …

The communication of network is a complex process which cannot be seen by human beings. Even a computer that sit on a network can only knows the conversation within itself and others computer it talk to but not others computers· conversation that it didn't take part. Furthermore, the communication in network can be viewed as traffic which always triggers a lot of unsolved problems for computers to "talk. Therefore, to solve the problems we need to exactly know what really happened inside the network traffic. A variety of sniffing tools are invented for these purpose. All of these tools have …
