Cellscout: Visual Analytics For Mining Biomarkers In Cell State Discovery, Rui Sheng, Zelin Zang, Jiachen Wang, Yan Luo, Zixin Chen, Yan Zhou, Shaolun Ruan, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cell state discovery is crucial for understanding biological systems and enhancing medical outcomes. A key aspect of this process is identifying distinct biomarkers that define specific cell states. However, difficulties arise from the co-discovery process of cell states and biomarkers: biologists often use dimensionality reduction to visualize cells in a two-dimensional space. Then they usually interpret visually clustered cells as distinct states, from which they seek to identify unique biomarkers. However, this assumption is often this assumption often fails to hold due to internal inconsistencies in a cluster, making the process trial-and-error and highly uncertain. Therefore, biologists urgently need effective …

Non-Blackbox Robust Design Of Machine Learning In Networks, Venkat Sai Suman Lamba Karanam Aug 2025

Non-Blackbox Robust Design Of Machine Learning In Networks, Venkat Sai Suman Lamba Karanam

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Networked systems have become increasingly complex, with newer communication technologies and standards being added every day. Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) paradigms have been adopted in networks to not only solve many fundamental problems, but also to allow seamless integration of components comprising them. The saying “let’s not reinvent the wheel” in ML/AI adoption implies that model architecture design be left for pure ML/AI researchers, while network researchers focus on input preprocessing (e.g. formatting the packet data to be fed to a model), hyperparameter fine-tuning and a trial-and-error approach to find the “best” result. …

Predicting Consumers’ Purchase Intention Of Browsed Products: A Study Based On Eye‑Tracking, Feiyan Jia, Choon Ling Sia, Yani Shi, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Predicting consumers’ purchase intention of browsed products enables sellers to implement nuanced promotion strategies to stimulate purchase. But how can we predict consumers’ purchase intention of browsed products? Our research demonstrates that consumers’ eye movement data collected when they browse products can serve this aim. We train and test the prediction model using logistic regression and random forest algorithms. Using data collected in a laboratory experiment, our empirical results show that both algorithms perform much better than a random guess, and the logistic regression performs slightly better than the random forest. Our findings imply that eye movement data enable sellers …

Theses and Dissertations

By perturbation or physical attacks any machine can be fooled into predicting something else other than the intended output. There are training data based on which the model is trained to predict unknown things. The objective was to create noises and shades of different levels on the images and do experiments for measuring accuracy and making the model classify the traffic signs. When it comes to adding shades to the pictures, pixels were modified for three different layers of the pictures. The experiment also shows that with the shadows getting deeper, the accuracies drop significantly. Here, some changes in pixels …

Anomaly Heterogeneity Learning For Open-Set Supervised Anomaly Detection, Jiawen Zhu, Choubo Ding, Yu Tian, Guansong Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Open-set supervised anomaly detection (OSAD) - a recently emerging anomaly detection area - aims at utilizing a few samples of anomaly classes seen during training to detect unseen anomalies (i.e., samples from open-set anomaly classes), while effectively identifying the seen anomalies. Benefiting from the prior knowledge illustrated by the seen anomalies, current OSAD methods can often largely reduce false positive errors. However, these methods are trained in a closed-set setting and treat the anomaly examples as from a homogeneous distribution, rendering them less effective in generalizing to unseen anomalies that can be drawn from any distribution. This paper proposes to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent decades, deep learning approaches have shown significant improvement in various image understanding tasks. However, analysis of high-resolution images remains a major challenge. In this work, we address the challenge of very high-resolution histopathological image (VHRHI) classification using a new information-theoretic discriminative patch selection approach. We show results on a high-resolution image dataset, namely, gigapixel whole slide tissue images for cancer tumors. Then we address how to efficiently classify challenging histopathology images, such as gigapixel whole-slide images for cancer diagnostics with image-level annotation. These ``weak labels'' are applied throughout the image but describe tumor regions of variable sizes and …

The End Of Consent: Data And The Corporate-Consumer Relationship, Faisal Hijjawi Jan 2024

The End Of Consent: Data And The Corporate-Consumer Relationship, Faisal Hijjawi

LL.M. Essays & Theses

Consumer data is largely regulated through the notice-and-choice approach in the United States, which relies on consumer consent. The notice-and-choice approach is rooted in the control theory of information privacy. This paper will argue that the control theory is limited due to its reliance on property law, its breadth, as well as it reinforcing the ‘no privacy in public’ concept. Further, the notice-and-choice approach relies on consent being both free and informed. However, consent cannot be considered free due to the lack of choice and the manipulation exerted on the consumer. Also, consent is not informed as the consumer lacks …

Damage Detection With An Integrated Smart Composite Using A Magnetostriction-Based Nondestructive Evaluation Method: Integrating Machine Learning For Prediction, Christopher Nelon

All Dissertations

The development of composite materials for structural components necessitates methods for evaluating and characterizing their damage states after encountering loading conditions. Laminates fabricated from carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are lightweight alternatives to metallic plates; thus, their usage has increased in performance industries such as aerospace and automotive. Additive manufacturing (AM) has experienced a similar growth as composite material inclusion because of its advantages over traditional manufacturing methods. Fabrication with composite laminates and additive manufacturing, specifically fused filament fabrication (fused deposition modeling), requires material to be placed layer-by-layer. If adjacent plies/layers lose adhesion during fabrication or operational usage, the strength …

Faire: Repairing Fairness Of Neural Networks Via Neuron Condition Synthesis, Tianlin Li, Xiaofei Xie, Jian Wang, Qing Guo, Aishan Liu, Lei Ma, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have achieved tremendous success in many applications, while it has been demonstrated that DNNs can exhibit some undesirable behaviors on concerns such as robustness, privacy, and other trustworthiness issues. Among them, fairness (i.e., non-discrimination) is one important property, especially when they are applied to some sensitive applications (e.g., finance and employment). However, DNNs easily learn spurious correlations between protected attributes (e.g., age, gender, race) and the classification task and develop discriminatory behaviors if the training data is imbalanced. Such discriminatory decisions in sensitive applications would introduce severe social impacts. To expose potential discrimination problems in DNNs …
