Traditional deep learning methods and econometric models have played a crucial role in the field of data mining, particularly in the prediction of socioeconomic outcomes. However, socio-economic information is unable to be directly extracted from remote sensing data. So, in this paper, we propose a method to leverage transfer learning to predict socioeconomic indicators (outcomes) through satellite imagery. Specifically, we use road network types as a proxy for socioeconomic factors, which is more effective and stable than using nightlight. We have extracted eleven distinct road topological features to generate reasonable road network types. Given the unique characteristics of road networks, …
Towards Explainable Ai On Graph Neural Networks: Xaig, Jiaxing Zhang
Towards Explainable Ai On Graph Neural Networks: Xaig, Jiaxing Zhang
Dissertations
In the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI), Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have garnered growing prominence for their adeptness in processing graph-structured data. Despite this, the interpretability of their predictions often remains elusive. The demand for transparency and explainability in complex prediction models has reached unprecedented levels. To address this, post-hoc instance-level explanation techniques have emerged, aiming to unveil the rationale behind GNN predictions. These techniques endeavor to unearth substructures that elucidate the predictive behavior of trained GNNs.
This dissertation embarks on an exploration of Explainable AI (XAI) technologies within the realm of GNNs. Amid the challenges posed by the …

The iterative character of work in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) and reliance on comparisons against benchmark datasets emphasize the importance of reproducibility in that literature. Yet, resource constraints and inadequate documentation can make running replications particularly challenging. Our work explores the potential of using downstream citation contexts as a signal of reproducibility. We introduce a sentiment analysis framework applied to citation contexts from papers involved in Machine Learning Reproducibility Challenges in order to interpret the positive or negative outcomes of reproduction attempts. Our contributions include training classifiers for reproducibility-related contexts and sentiment analysis, and exploring correlations between …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Relation Extraction (RE) is a vital step to complete Knowledge Graph (KG) by extracting entity relations from texts. However, it usually suffers from the long-tail issue. The training data mainly concentrates on a few types of relations, leading to the lack of sufficient annotations for the remaining types of relations. In this paper, we propose a general approach to learn relation prototypes from unlabeled texts, to facilitate the long-tail relation extraction by transferring knowledge from the relation types with sufficient training data. We learn relation prototypes as an implicit factor between entities, which reflects the meanings of relations as well …
Campus Safety Data Gathering, Classification, And Ranking Based On Clery-Act Reports, Walaa F. Abo Elenin
Campus Safety Data Gathering, Classification, And Ranking Based On Clery-Act Reports, Walaa F. Abo Elenin
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Most existing campus safety rankings are based on criminal incident history with minimal or no consideration of campus security conditions and standard safety measures. Campus safety information published by universities/colleges is usually conceptual/qualitative and not quantitative and are based-on criminal records of these campuses. Thus, no explicit and trusted ranking method for these campuses considers the level of compliance with the standard safety measures. A quantitative safety measure is important to compare different campuses easily and to learn about specific campus safety conditions.
In this thesis, we utilize Clery-Act reports of campuses to automatically analyze their safety conditions and generate …

Dashboards, which comprise multiple views on a single display, help analyze and communicate multiple perspectives of data simultaneously. However, creating effective and elegant dashboards is challenging since it requires careful and logical arrangement and coordination of multiple visualizations. To solve the problem, we propose a data-driven approach for mining design rules from dashboards and automating dashboard organization. Specifically, we focus on two prominent aspects of the organization: , which describes the position, size, and layout of each view in the display space; and, which indicates the interaction between pairwise views. We build a new dataset containing 854 dashboards crawled online, …

Mitigating Popularity Bias In Recommendation With Unbalanced Interactions: A Gradient Perspective, Weijieying Ren, Lei Wang, Kunpeng Liu, Ruocheng Guo, Ee-Peng Lim, Yanjie Fu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recommender systems learn from historical user-item interactions to identify preferred items for target users. These observed interactions are usually unbalanced following a long-tailed distribution. Such long-tailed data lead to popularity bias to recommend popular but not personalized items to users. We present a gradient perspective to understand two negative impacts of popularity bias in recommendation model optimization: (i) the gradient direction of popular item embeddings is closer to that of positive interactions, and (ii) the magnitude of positive gradient for popular items are much greater than that of unpopular items. To address these issues, we propose a simple yet efficient …

Exploiting Reuse For Gpu Subgraph Enumeration, Wentiao Guo, Yuchen Li, Kian-Lee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Subgraph enumeration is important for many applications such as network motif discovery, community detection, and frequent subgraph mining. To accelerate the execution, recent works utilize graphics processing units (GPUs) to parallelize subgraph enumeration. The performances of these parallel schemes are dominated by the set intersection operations which account for up to $95\%$ of the total processing time. (Un)surprisingly, a significant portion (as high as $99\%$) of these operations is actually redundant, i.e., the same set of vertices is repeatedly encountered and evaluated. Therefore, in this paper, we seek to salvage and recycle the results of such operations to avoid repeated …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To solve programming issues, developers commonly search on Stack Overflow to seek potential solutions. However, there is a gap between the knowledge developers are interested in and the knowledge they are able to retrieve using search engines. To help developers efficiently retrieve relevant knowledge on Stack Overflow, prior studies proposed several techniques to reformulate queries and generate summarized answers. However, few studies performed a large-scale analysis using real-world search logs. In this paper, we characterize how developers search on Stack Overflow using such logs. By doing so, we identify the challenges developers face when searching on Stack Overflow and seek …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
An alternative to current mainstream preprocessing methods is proposed: Value Selection (VS). Unlike the existing methods such as feature selection that removes features and instance selection that eliminates instances, value selection eliminates the values (with respect to each feature) in the dataset with two purposes: reducing the model size and preserving its accuracy. Two probabilistic methods based on information theory's metric are proposed: PVS and P + VS. Extensive experiments on the benchmark datasets with various sizes are elaborated. Those results are compared with the existing preprocessing methods such as feature selection, feature transformation, and instance selection methods. Experiment results …

As road transportation supports both economic and social activities in developed cities, it is important to maintain smooth traffic on all highways and local roads. Whenever possible, traffic congestions should be detected early and resolved quickly. While existing traffic monitoring dashboard systems have been put in place in many cities, these systems require high-cost vehicle speed monitoring instruments and detect traffic congestion as independent events. There is a lack of low-cost dashboards to inspect and analyze the lifecycle of traffic congestion which is critical in assessing the overall impact of congestion, determining the possible the source(s) of congestion and its …
Efficient Representative Subset Selection Over Sliding Windows, Yanhao Wang, Yuchen Li, Kian-Lee Tan
Efficient Representative Subset Selection Over Sliding Windows, Yanhao Wang, Yuchen Li, Kian-Lee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Representative subset selection (RSS) is an important tool for users to draw insights from massive datasets. Existing literature models RSS as submodular maximization to capture the "diminishing returns" property of representativeness, but often only has a single constraint, which limits its applications to many real-world problems. To capture the recency issue and support various constraints, we formulate dynamic RSS as maximizing submodular functions subject to general d -knapsack constraints (SMDK) over sliding windows. We propose a KnapWindow framework (KW) for SMDK. KW utilizes KnapStream (KS) for SMDK in append-only streams as a subroutine. It maintains a sequence of checkpoints and …

Efficient Reduced Bias Genetic Algorithm For Generic Community Detection Objectives, Aditya Karnam Gururaj Rao
Theses
The problem of community structure identification has been an extensively investigated area for biology, physics, social sciences, and computer science in recent years for studying the properties of networks representing complex relationships. Most traditional methods, such as K-means and hierarchical clustering, are based on the assumption that communities have spherical configurations. Lately, Genetic Algorithms (GA) are being utilized for efficient community detection without imposing sphericity. GAs are machine learning methods which mimic natural selection and scale with the complexity of the network. However, traditional GA approaches employ a representation method that dramatically increases the solution space to be searched by …

This paper describes the use of reconstructability analysis to perform a secondary study of traumatic brain injury data from automobile accidents. Neutral searches were done and their results displayed with a hypergraph. Directed searches, using both variable-based and state-based models, were applied to predict performance on two cognitive tests and one neurological test. Very simple state-based models gave large uncertainty reductions for all three DVs and sizeable improvements in percent correct for the two cognitive test DVs which were equally sampled. Conditional probability distributions for these models are easily visualized with simple decision trees. Confounding variables and counter-intuitive findings are …

Analyzing job hopping behavior is important for theunderstanding of job preference and career progression of working individuals. When analyzed at the workforce population level, job hop analysis helps to gaininsights of talent flow and organization competition. Traditionally, surveysare conducted on job seekers and employers to study job behavior. While surveysare good at getting direct user input to specially designed questions, they areoften not scalable and timely enough to cope with fast-changing job landscape. In this paper, we present a data science approach to analyze job hops performedby about 490,000 working professionals located in a city using their publiclyshared profiles. We develop several …

We advocate for a paradigm shift in supporting the information needs of developers, centered around the concept of automated on-demand developer documentation. Currently, developer information needs are fulfilled by asking experts or consulting documentation. Unfortunately, traditional documentation practices are inefficient because of, among others, the manual nature of its creation and the gap between the creators and consumers. We discuss the major challenges we face in realizing such a paradigm shift, highlight existing research that can be leveraged to this end, and promote opportunities for increased convergence in research on software documentation.
Mining Diverse Consumer Preferences For Bundling And Recommendation, Ha Loc Do
Mining Diverse Consumer Preferences For Bundling And Recommendation, Ha Loc Do
Dissertations and Theses Collection
That consumers share similar tastes on some products does not guarantee their agreement on other products. Therefore, both similarity and dierence should be taken into account for a more rounded view on consumer preferences. This manuscript focuses on mining this diversity of consumer preferences from two perspectives, namely 1) between consumers and 2) between products. Diversity of preferences between consumers is studied in the context of recommendation systems. In some preference models, measuring similarities in preferences between two consumers plays the key role. These approaches assume two consumers would share certain degree of similarity on any products, ignoring the fact …

Organizations belonging to the government, commercial, and non-profit industries collect and store large amounts of sensitive data, which include medical, financial, and personal information. They use data mining methods to formulate business strategies that yield high long-term and short-term financial benefits. While analyzing such data, the private information of the individuals present in the data must be protected for moral and legal reasons. Current practices such as redacting sensitive attributes, releasing only the aggregate values, and query auditing do not provide sufficient protection against an adversary armed with auxiliary information. In the presence of additional background information, the privacy protection …

Data Mining By Grid Computing In The Search For Extrasolar Planets, Oisin Creaner [Thesis]
Doctoral
A system is presented here to provide improved precision in ensemble differential photometry. This is achieved by using the power of grid computing to analyse astronomical catalogues. This produces new catalogues of optimised pointings for each star, which maximise the number and quality of reference stars available. Astronomical phenomena such as exoplanet transits and small-scale structure within quasars may be observed by means of millimagnitude photometric variability on the timescale of minutes to hours. Because of atmospheric distortion, ground-based observations of these phenomena require the use of differential photometry whereby the target is compared with one or more reference stars. …

Searching for people information on the Web is a common practice in life. However, it is time consuming to search for such information manually. In this paper, we aim to develop an automatic people information search system, named ARISE-PIE. To build such a system, we tackle two major technical challenges: data harvesting and data integration. For data harvesting, we study how to leverage search engine to help crawl the relevant Web pages for a target entity; then we propose a novel learning to query model that can automatically select a set of "best" queries to maximize collective utility (e.g., precision …
