The lack of employee cybersecurity policy compliance is a significant threat in organizations because it leads to security risks and breaches. Grounded in the theory of planned behavior, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the strategies cybersecurity leaders utilize to enforce cybersecurity policies. The objective of this research is to examine users’ cybersecurity behavior in monetary gain and loss scenarios. Using Prospect Theory, we hypothesize that users are more likely to engage in risky cybersecurity behavior to avoid monetary losses than to benefit from monetary gains. We also hypothesize that guaranteed gains have a greater effect on a user’s risk-taking behavior than potential gains, and potential losses have a greater effect on a user’s risk-taking behavior than guaranteed losses. An experimental study is proposed to test the research hypotheses.

The main aim of this thesis is to call for a new analysis of cyber security which departs from the traditional security theory. I argue that the cyber domain is inherently different in nature, in that it is lacking in traditional boundaries and is reflexive in nature. Policy-makers are aware of these characteristics, and in turn this awareness changes the way that national cyber security strategy is handled and understood. Through this research, we present an analysis of 14 strains of ransomware that infect Windows platforms, and we do a comparison of Windows Application Programming Interface (API) calls made through ransomware processes with baselines of normal operating system behaviour. Users are expected to assess the level of security of e-commerce websites before conducting online transactions. In this research, we examine user assessment of security of e-commerce web pages based on cues presented on the web pages. A pilot study was conducted in which each subject assessed six e-commerce web pages with varying cues (i.e., HTTP vs. HTTPS, fraudulent vs. authentic URL, padlocks beside fields), and the findings are reported.
