An Incremental Threshold Method For Continuous Text Search Queries, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Hwee Hwa Pang Apr 2009

An Incremental Threshold Method For Continuous Text Search Queries, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A text filtering system monitors a stream of incoming documents, to identify those that match the interest profiles of its users. The user interests are registered at a server as continuous text search queries. The server constantly maintains for each query a ranked result list, comprising the recent documents (drawn from a sliding window) with the highest similarity to the query. Such a system underlies many text monitoring applications that need to cope with heavy document traffic, such as news and email monitoring. In this paper, we propose the first solution for processing continuous text queries efficiently. Our objective is …

Efficient Evaluation Of Multiple Preference Queries, Hou U Leong, Nikos Mamaoulis, Kyriakos Mouratidis Apr 2009

Efficient Evaluation Of Multiple Preference Queries, Hou U Leong, Nikos Mamaoulis, Kyriakos Mouratidis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Consider multiple users searching for a hotel room, based on size, cost, distance to the beach, etc. Users may have variable preferences expressed by different weights on the attributes of the searched objects. Although individual preference queries can be evaluated by selecting the object in the database with the highest aggregate score, in the case of multiple requests at the same time, a single object cannot be assigned to more than one users. The challenge is to compute a fair 1-1 matching between the queries and a subset of the objects. We model this as a stable-marriage problem and propose …

Using Gis To Locate Areas For Growing Quality Coffee In Honduras, Ellen Mickle Apr 2009

Using Gis To Locate Areas For Growing Quality Coffee In Honduras, Ellen Mickle

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Abstract Small-scale coffee producers worldwide remain vulnerable to price fluctuations after the 1999-2003 coffee crisis. One way to increase small-scale farmer economic resilience is to produce a more expensive product, such as quality coffee. There is growing demand in coffee-producing and coffee-importing countries for user-friendly tools that facilitate the marketing of quality coffee. The purpose of this study is to develop a prototypical quality coffee marketing tool in the form of a GIS model that identifies regions for producing quality coffee in a country not usually associated with quality coffee, Honduras. Maps of areas for growing quality coffee were produced …

Opaque: Protecting Path Privacy In Directions Search, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Hong Va Leong, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Directions search returns the shortest path from a source to a destination on a road network. However, the search interests of users may be exposed to the service providers, thus raising privacy concerns. For instance, a path query that finds a path from a resident address to a clinic may lead to a deduction about "who is related to what disease". To protect user privacy from accessing directions search services, we introduce the OPAQUE system, which consists of two major components: (1) an obfuscator that formulates obfuscated path queries by mixing true and fake sources/destinations; and (2) an obfuscated path …

Mitigating Insider Sabotage And Espionage: A Review Of The United States Air Force's Current Posture, Erika C. Leach

Theses and Dissertations

The security threat from malicious insiders affects all organizations. Mitigating this problem is quite difficult due to the fact that (1) there is no definitive profile for malicious insiders, (2) organizations have placed trust in these individuals, and (3) insiders have a vast knowledge of their organization’s personnel, security policies, and information systems. The purpose of this research is to analyze to what extent the United States Air Force (USAF) security policies address the insider threat problem. The policies are reviewed in terms of how well they align with best practices published by the Carnegie Mellon University Computer Emergency Readiness …

Information Technology (It) Investment Decisions Under Asymmetric Information: A Modified Rational Expectation Model, Jinlan Ni, Deepak Khazanchi Mar 2009

Information Technology (It) Investment Decisions Under Asymmetric Information: A Modified Rational Expectation Model, Jinlan Ni, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose that information technology (IT) managers make investment decisions about new IT initiatives based on a modified rational expectation model. Unlike traditional rational expectation models, we emphasize the relevance of market uncertainty and its impact on the return of new IT investment. This results in information acquisition decisions by managers that can cause information asymmetry. This information asymmetry is endogenous and so the IT manager can become well informed if and only if it is beneficial to do so. We also capture different levels of IT investment across managers by introducing heterogeneity across managers in terms …

Consider a world where you can: conduct training sessions and bring together experts from around the globe in a single, common environment where learning is possible; hold effective meetings in a shared space where distant resources and people can come together to communicate, laugh, and create artifacts quickly and easily; and, coordinate a project with ease and overcome cultural barriers to team effectiveness. These scenarios can be realized with virtual world (VW) technology.

Fast Object Search On Road Networks, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Baihua Zheng Mar 2009

Fast Object Search On Road Networks, Ken C. K. Lee, Wang-Chien Lee, Baihua Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present ROAD, a general framework to evaluate Location-Dependent Spatial Queries (LDSQ)s that searches for spatial objects on road networks. By exploiting search space pruning technique and providing a dynamic object mapping mechanism, ROAD is very efficient and flexible for various types of queries, namely, range search and nearest neighbor search, on objects over large-scale networks. ROAD is named after its two components, namely, Route Overlay and Association Directory, designed to address the network traversal and object access aspects of the framework. In ROAD, a large road network is organized as a hierarchy of interconnected regional sub-networks …

Web Query Recommendation Via Sequential Query Prediction, Qi He, Daxin Jiang, Zhen Liao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Kuiyu Chang, Ee Peng Lim, Hang Li Mar 2009

Web Query Recommendation Via Sequential Query Prediction, Qi He, Daxin Jiang, Zhen Liao, Steven C. H. Hoi, Kuiyu Chang, Ee Peng Lim, Hang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Web query recommendation has long been considered a key feature of search engines. Building a good Web query recommendation system, however, is very difficult due to the fundamental challenge of predicting users' search intent, especially given the limited user context information. In this paper, we propose a novel "sequential query prediction" approach that tries to grasp a user's search intent based on his/her past query sequence and its resemblance to historical query sequence models mined from massive search engine logs. Different query sequence models were examined, including the naive variable length N-gram model, Variable Memory Markov (VMM) model, and our …

Continuous Visible Nearest Neighbour Queries, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Gencai Chen Mar 2009

Continuous Visible Nearest Neighbour Queries, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Gencai Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we identify and solve a new type of spatial queries, called continuous visible nearest neighbor (CVNN) search. Given a data set P, an obstacle set O, and a query line segment q, a CVNN query returns a set of (p, R) tuples such that p ? P is the nearest neighbor (NN) to every point r along the interval R ? q as well as p is visible to r. Note that p may be NULL, meaning that all points in P are invisible to all points in R, due to the obstruction of some obstacles in …

Online communities evolve following distinctive lifecycle stages and recommendations for success are more or less relevant depending on the developmental stage of the online community. In addition, the goal of the online community under study determines the components to include in the development of a successful online community. Online community builders and researchers will benefit …

Computing For Human Experience: Sensors, Perception, Semantics, Web N.0, And Beyond, Amit P. Sheth Feb 2009

Computing For Human Experience: Sensors, Perception, Semantics, Web N.0, And Beyond, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Traditionally there has been a strong separation between computing and human activities in the real world. The approach has largely been that of mapping the complexity and richness of the real world to constrained computer models and languages for more efficient computation, and then transferring the results for use in the real world. I think the time is ripe to reverse the situation, for computing and communication to transparently enrich and enhance human experience. Today, devices enable something more than a 'human instructs machine' paradigm. We are seeing computing and communication engage transparently in human activities by enriching them in …

Metaverses are immersive three-dimensional virtual worlds in which people interact as avatars with each other and with software agents, using the metaphor of the real world but without its physical limitations. The ubiquitous availability of high speed Internet access has spurred enormous interest in virtual worlds like Second Life and World of Warcraft, both in terms of user gaming and as a new technological platform for global virtual collaboration. These environments have potential for richer, more engaging collaboration, but their capabilities have yet to be examined in depth. Of particular interest in this paper is the use of metaverses for …

Node Isolation Model And Age-Based Neighbor Selection In Unstructured P2p Networks, Zhongmei Yao, Derek Leonard, Dmitri Loguinov Feb 2009

Node Isolation Model And Age-Based Neighbor Selection In Unstructured P2p Networks, Zhongmei Yao, Derek Leonard, Dmitri Loguinov

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Previous analytical studies of unstructured P2P resilience have assumed exponential user lifetimes and only considered age-independent neighbor replacement. In this paper, we overcome these limitations by introducing a general node-isolation model for heavy-tailed user lifetimes and arbitrary neighbor-selection algorithms. Using this model, we analyze two age-biased neighbor-selection strategies and show that they significantly improve the residual lifetimes of chosen users, which dramatically reduces the probability of user isolation and graph partitioning compared with uniform selection of neighbors. In fact, the second strategy based on random walks on age-proportional graphs demonstrates that, for lifetimes with infinite variance, the system monotonically increases …

Learning Image‐Text Associations, Tao Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Web information fusion can be defined as the problem of collating and tracking information related to specific topics on the World Wide Web. Whereas most existing work on Web information fusion has focused on text-based multidocument summarization, this paper concerns the topic of image and text association, a cornerstone of cross-media Web information fusion. Specifically, we present two learning methods for discovering the underlying associations between images and texts based on small training data sets. The first method based on vague transformation measures the information similarity between the visual features and the textual features through a set of predefined domain-specific …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds in which users take the form of avatars. Through their avatars, users can interact with objects and other avatars in the virtual world. Virtual worlds are growing in importance in both educational institutions and businesses. Educational institutions have adopted virtual worlds as a medium for instructional delivery whereas businesses are using virtual worlds for recruitment, training, collaboration, and marketing. Given these emerging phenomena, a better understanding of behavioral and perceptual issues in virtual worlds is warranted. In this paper, we propose a research model to study gender stereotypicality of male and female avatars and …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds where team collaboration is facilitated through the use of shared virtual space. In this research, we are interested in studying the effect of task complexity on team collaboration. We use a puzzle as the collaboration task and manipulate task complexity using the number of puzzle pieces. We hypothesize that task complexity will influence team cohesion as well as satisfaction with team process and outcome, increase the time taken to complete the task, and increase the relative unevenness in team members' contributions in terms of physical effort to accomplish the task due to the increased …

As one of the most important cultural heritages, classical western paintings have always played a special role in human live and been applied for many different purposes. While image classification is the subject of a plethora of related publications, relatively little attention has been paid to automatic categorization of western classical paintings which could be a key technique of modern digital library, museums and art galleries. This paper studies automatic classification on large western painting image collection. We propose a novel framework to support automatic classification on large western painting image collections. With this framework, multiple visual features can be …

Collaborative Learning Utilizing A Domain-Based Shared Data Repository To Enhance Learning Outcomes, David J. Lubliner Jan 2009

Collaborative Learning Utilizing A Domain-Based Shared Data Repository To Enhance Learning Outcomes, David J. Lubliner

Dissertations

A number of learning paradigms have postulated that knowledge formation is a dynamic process where learners actively construct a representation of concepts integrating information from multiple sources. Current teaching strategies utilize a compartmentalized approach where individual courses contain a small subset of the knowledge required for a discipline. The intent of this research is to provide a framework to integrate the components of a discipline into a cohesive whole and accelerate the integration of concepts enhancing the learning process. The components utilized to accomplish these goals include two new knowledge integration models; a Knowledge Weighting Model (KWM) and the Aggregate-Integrate-Master …

Voting In Group Support Systems : Theory, Implementation, And Results From An Exploratory Study, Kung-E Cheng Jan 2009

Voting In Group Support Systems : Theory, Implementation, And Results From An Exploratory Study, Kung-E Cheng

Dissertations

Group decision making is essential in organizations. Group Support Systems (GSS) can aide groups in making decisions by providing tools and process support. GSS is especially useful for geographically or temporally distributed groups. Researchers of GSS have pointed out that convergence processes are hard to accomplish in GSS. Voting tools in GSS can be a valuable asset in alleviating the difficulty of convergence processes because voting is a concise communication of individual preferences with a well defined procedure that is accepted by group members. In addition, voting results can serve as a group memory of the convergence processes. Field observations …

Heuristics For Improved Enterprise Intrusion Detection, James J. Treinen Jan 2009

Heuristics For Improved Enterprise Intrusion Detection, James J. Treinen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the greatest challenges facing network operators today is the identification of malicious activity on their networks. The current approach is to deploy a set of intrusion detection sensors (IDSs) in various locations throughout the network and on strategic hosts. Unfortunately, the available intrusion detection technologies generate an overwhelming volume of false alarms, making the task of identifying genuine attacks nearly impossible. This problem is very difficult to solve even in networks of nominal size. The task of uncovering attacks in enterprise class networks quickly becomes unmanageable.

Research on improving intrusion detection sensors is ongoing, but given the nature …
